Hopf-Zero singularities truly unfold chaos

We provide conditions to guarantee the occurrence of Shilnikov bifurcations in analytic unfoldings of some Hopf-Zero singularities through a beyond all order phenomenon: the exponentially small breakdown of invariant manifolds which coincide at any order of the normal form procedure. The conditions are computable and satisfied by generic singularities and generic unfoldings. The existence of Shilnikov bifurcations in the $\mathcal{C}^r$ case was already argued by Guckenheimer in the $80$'s. About the same time, endowing the space of $\mathcal{C}^\infty$ unfoldings with a convenient topology, persistence and density of the Shilnikov phenomenon was proved by Broer and Vegter in 1984. However, since the proof involves the use of flat perturbations, this approach is not valid in the analytic context. What is more, none of the mentioned approaches provide a computable criteria to decide whether a given unfolding exhibits Shilnikov bifurcations or not. This work ends the whole discussion by showing that, under generic and checkable hypothesis, any analytic unfolding of a Hopf-Zero singularity within the appropriate class contains Shilnikov homoclinic orbits, and as a consequence chaotic dynamics.

Breakdown of a 2D heteroclinic connection in the Hopf-zero singularity (I)

In this paper we study a beyond all order phenomenon which appears in the analytic unfoldings of the Hopf-zero singularity. It consists in the breakdown of a two-dimensional heteroclinic surface which exists in the truncated normal form of this singularity at any order. The results in this paper are twofold: on the one hand we give results for generic unfoldings which lead to sharp exponentially small upper bounds of the difference between these manifolds. On the other hand, we provide asymptotic formulas for this difference by means of the Melnikov function for some non-generic unfoldings.

Breakdown of a 2D heteroclinic connection in the Hopf-zero singularity (II). The generic case

In this paper we prove the breakdown of the two-dimensional stable and unstable manifolds associated to two saddle-focus points which appear in the unfoldings of the Hopf-zero singulariry. The method consists in obtaining an asymptotic formula for the difference between this manifolds which turns to be exponentially small respect to the unfolding parameter. The formula obtained is explicit but depends on the so-called Stokes constants, which arise in the study of original vector field and which corresponds to the so called inner equation in singular perturbation theory.

The scattering map in two coupled piecewise-smooth systems, with numerical application to rocking blocks

We consider a non-autonomous dynamical system formed by coupling two piecewise-smooth systems in $\RR^2$ through a non-autonomous periodic perturbation. We study the dynamics around one of the heteroclinic orbits of one of the piecewise-smooth systems. In the unperturbed case, the system possesses two $C^0$ normally hyperbolic invariant manifolds of dimension two with a couple of three dimensional heteroclinic manifolds between them. These heteroclinic manifolds are foliated by heteroclinic connections between $C^0$ tori located at the same energy levels. By means of the {\em impact map} we prove the persistence of these objects under perturbation. In addition, we provide sufficient conditions of the existence of transversal heteroclinic intersections through the existence of simple zeros of Melnikov-like functions. The heteroclinic manifolds allow us to define the {\em scattering map}, which links asymptotic dynamics in the invariant manifolds through heteroclinic connections. First order properties of this map provide sufficient conditions for the asymptotic dynamics to be located in different energy levels in the perturbed invariant manifolds. Hence we have an essential tool for the construction of a heteroclinic skeleton which, when followed, can lead to the existence of Arnol'd diffusion: trajectories that, on large time scales, destabilize the system by further accumulating energy. We validate all the theoretical results with detailed numerical computations of a mechanical system with impacts, formed by the linkage of two rocking blocks with a spring.

Exponentially small heteroclinic breakdown in the generic Hopf-zero singularity

In this paper we prove the breakdown of an heteroclinic connection in the analytic versal unfoldings of the generic Hopf-Zero singularity in an open set of the parameter space. This heteroclinic orbit appears at any order if one performs the normal form around the origin, therefore it is a phenomenon "beyond all orders". In this paper we provide a formula for the distance between the corresponding stable and unstable one dimensional manifolds which is given by an exponentially small function in the perturbation parameter. Our result applies both for conservative and dissipative unfoldings.

The Melnikov method and subharmonic orbits in a piecewise smooth system

In this work we consider a two-dimensional piecewise smooth system, defined in two domains separated by the switching manifold $x=0$. We assume that there exists a piecewise-defined continuous Hamiltonian that is a first integral of the system. We also suppose that the system possesses an invisible fold-fold at the origin and two heteroclinic orbits connecting two hyperbolic critical points on either side of $x=0$. Finally, we assume that the region closed by these heteroclinic connections is fully covered by periodic orbits surrounding the origin, whose periods monotonically increase as they approach the heteroclinic connection. When considering a non-autonomous ($T$-periodic) Hamiltonian perturbation of amplitude $\varepsilon$, using an impact map, we rigorously prove that, for every $n$ and $m$ relatively prime and $\varepsilon>0$ small enough, there exists a $nT$-periodic orbit impacting $2m$ times with the switching manifold at every period if a modified subharmonic Melnikov function possesses a simple zero. We also prove that, if the orbits are discontinuous when they cross $x=0$, then all these orbits exist if the relative size of $\varepsilon>0$ with respect to the magnitude of this jump is large enough. We also obtain similar conditions for the splitting of the heteroclinic connections.
