Comment on "Adiabatic Expansion of Electron Gas in a Magnetic Nozzle" by Kazunori Takahashi, Christine Charles, Rod Roswell, and Akira Ando, Phys. Rev. Lett. Vol. 120, 045001 (2018)

Heat capacities at fixed volume and pressure as a function of the degree of ionization are graphically depicted as functions of reciprocal temperature and ionization degree. The polytropic index is calculated as a function of the same variables; as it is not constant a partially ionized plasma can be only approximately polytropic fluid. In parallel, it is launched the idea that Alfvén waves can be used to heat the plasma in a propulsion jet with magnetic nozzle.

Predicted electric field induced surface magnetization of vortex phase of superconductors

We predict a new effect in condensed matter surface magnetization of the vortex phase of a superconductor induced by electric field. The magnetized superconductor should be one of the plates of a plane capacitor on which a voltage has to be applied. Applying alternating voltage to the capacitor, electrostatic induction leads to oscillations of the magnetic moment which has to be measured by electromotive force inducted in a detector coil. The derived explicit formula for the magnetization contains the effective mass of Cooper pairs and a systematic investigation of the predicted magnetization will lead to a creation of an effective Cooper pair mass spectroscopy. For cleaved superconductors this effective mass is a property of the bulk material.

Generation of Teraherz Oscillations by Thin Superconducting Film in Fluctuation Regime

Explicit analytical expressions for conductivity of a superconducting film above and below critical temperature in an arbitrary electric field are derived in the frameworks of the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory. It is confirmed that slightly below critical temperature the differential conductivity of superconducting film can become negative for small enough values of electric field. This fact may cause generation of electromagnetic oscillations if the superconducting film is appropriately coupled of with a resonator. Their maximal frequency is proportional to the value of critical temperature of superconducting transition. The obtained results can stimulate the development of Terahertz generators on the basis of high temperature superconducting films.

An undergraduate laboratory experiment on measuring the velocity of light with a catastrophic machine

An experimental setup for electrostatic measurement of $\varepsilon_0$, separated magneto-static measurement of $μ_0$ and determination of the velocity of light $c=1/\sqrt{\varepsilon_0 μ_0}$ according to Maxwell theory with percent accuracy is described. No forces are measured with the experimental setup therefore there is no need of a scale and the experiment price less than \pounds20 is mainly due to the batteries used. Multiplied 137~times, this experimental setup was given at the fourth open international Experimental Physics Olympiad (EPO4) and a dozen high school students did very well. This article, however, focuses on the catastrophe theory, which is the basis of the methodology.

Correlation between T_c and the Cu 4s level reveals the mechanism of high-temperature superconductivity

Band structure trends in hole-doped cuprates and correlations with T_c are interpreted within the s--d exchange mechanism of high-T_c superconductivity. The dependence of T_c on the position of the copper 4s level finds a natural explanation in the generic Cu 3d, Cu 4s, O 2p_x and O 2p_y four-band model. The Cu 3d--Cu 4s intra-atomic exchange interaction is incorporated in the standard BCS scheme. This dependence of T_c in the whole interval of 25--125 K has no alternative explanation at present, and possibly this quarter of a century standing puzzle is already solved.

Nonlinear Terms of MHD Equations for Homogeneous Magnetized Shear Flow

We have derived the full set of MHD equations for incompressible shear flow of a magnetized fluid and considered their solution in the wave-vector space. The linearized equations give the famous amplification of slow magnetosonic waves and describe the magnetorotational instability. The nonlinear terms in our analysis are responsible for the creation of turbulence and self-sustained spectral density of the MHD (Alfven and pseudo-Alfven) waves. Perspectives for numerical simulations of weak turbulence and calculation of the effective viscosity of accretion disks are shortly discussed in k-space.

Predicted light scattering by Josephson vortices in layered cuprates

Light scattering by Josephson vortices is theoretically predicted. An experimental set-up for the observation of the effect is proposed. The magnetic field should be parallel to the CuO_2 layers and the crystal surface. The falling light should be at grazing angles, and the Bragg scattering must be almost backscattering. The distance between the columns of the Josephson vortices must be slightly smaller than the light-wavelength. The surface should be very clean and flat in order light scattering by surface terraces and surface roughness to give the relatively small background.

Amplification of Slow Magnetosonic Waves by Shear Flow: Heating and Friction Mechanisms of Accretion Disks

Propagation of three dimensional magnetosonic waves is considered for a homogeneous shear flow of an incompressible fluid. The analytical solutions for all magnetohydrodynamic variables are presented by confluent Heun functions. The problem is reduced to finding a solution of an effective Schroedinger equation. The amplification of slow magnetosonic waves is analyzed in great details. A simple formula for the amplification coefficient is derived. The velocity shear primarily affects the incompressible limit of slow magnetosonic waves. The amplification is very strong for slow magnetosonic waves in the long-wavelength limit. It is demonstrated that the amplification of those waves leads to amplification of turbulence. The phenomenology of Shakura-Sunyaev for the friction in accretion disks is derived in the framework of the Kolmogorov turbulence. The presented findings may be the key to explaining the anomalous plasma heating responsible for the luminosity of quasars. It is suggested that wave amplification is the keystone of the self-sustained turbulence in accretion disks.

Temperature dependence of the specific heat and the penetration depth of anisotropic-gap BCS superconductors for a factorizable pairing potential

An explicit expression for the temperature dependence of the specific heat of clean anisotropic-gap superconductors is derived within the weak-coupling BCS approximation. The specific heat is presented as a functional of the superconducting gap on the Fermi surface. The obtained formula interpolates between the correct low coupling jump at T_c and the low temperature behavior for T<<T_c. For isotropic superconductors the formula gives a relation between the specific heat and the superconducting gap. For anisotropic superconductors, the interpolation formula incorporates averaging of powers of the gap anisotropy function over the Fermi surface and provides a suitable set for fitting model Hamiltonians to experimental data. The work of the interpolation formula is illustrated by (i) the Pokrovsky formula for the specific heat jump, (ii) Gor'kov and Melik-Barkhudarov formulas for the Ginzburg-Landau coefficients, (iii) the Moskalenko two-band formula for the specific heat jump, (iv) the temperature dependence of the specific heat for the two-band model, applicable to MgB_2, (v) the two-dimensional d-wave model, applicable for YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}, and (vi) the Zhitomirsky and Rice triplet p-wave model with horizontal line nodes for Sr_2RuO_4. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth is illustrated by fitting the general theoretical formula to the experimental data for MgB_2, YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-delta}, and the triplet superconductor Sr_2RuO_4.
