We explore how the stability and buckling behavior of a flexible but inextensible loop spanned by a liquid film in a flat circular configuration is influenced by the intrinsic shape of the fiber from which the loop is made.
Spontaneous symmetry breaking occurs in a physical system whenever the ground state does not share the symmetry of the underlying theory, e.g., the Hamiltonian. It gives rise to massless Nambu-Goldstone modes and massive Anderson-Higgs modes. These modes provide a fundamental understanding of matter in the Universe and appear as collective phase/amplitude excitations of an order parameter in a many-body system. The amplitude excitation plays a crucial role in determining the critical exponents governing universal non-equilibrium dynamics in the Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM). Here, we characterize the amplitude excitations in a spin-1 condensate and measure their energy gap for different phases of the quantum phase transition. At the quantum critical point of the transition, finite size effects lead to a non-zero gap. Our measurements are consistent with this prediction, and furthermore, we demonstrate an adiabatic quench through the phase transition, which is forbidden at the mean field level. This work paves the way toward generating entanglement through an adiabatic phase transition.
We observe power-law scaling of the temporal onset of excitations with quench speed in the neighborhood of the quantum phase transition between the polar and broken-axisymmetry phases in a small spin-1 ferromagnetic Bose-Einstein condensate. As the system is driven through the quantum critical point by tuning the Hamiltonian, the vanishing energy gap between the ground state and first excited state causes the reaction time scale of the system to diverge, preventing it from adiabatically following the ground state. We measure the temporal evolution of the spin populations for different quench speeds and determine the exponents characterizing the scaling of the onset of excitations, which are in good agreement with the predictions of the Kibble-Zurek mechanism.
We demonstrate a new method to coherently excite and control the quantum spin states of an atomic Bose gas using parametric excitation of the collective spin by time varying the relative strength of the Zeeman and spin-dependent collisional interaction energies at multiples of the natural frequency of the system. Compared to the usual single-particle quantum control techniques used to excite atomic spins (e.g. Rabi oscillations using rf or microwave fields), the method demonstrated here is intrinsically many-body, requiring inter-particle interactions. While parametric excitation of a classical system is ineffective from the ground state, we show that in our quantum system, parametric excitation from the quantum ground state leads to the generation of quantum squeezed states.
We demonstrate dynamic stabilization of an unstable strongly interacting quantum many-body system by periodic manipulation of the phase of the collective states. The experiment employs a spin-1 atomic Bose condensate initialized to an unstable (hyperbolic) fixed point of the spin-nematic phase space, where subsequent free evolution gives rise to squeezing and quantum spin mixing. To stabilize the system, periodic microwave pulses are applied that manipulate the spin-nematic many-body fluctuations and limit their growth. The range of pulse periods and phase shifts for which the condensate can be stabilized is measured and the resulting stability diagram compares well with a linear stability analysis of the problem.
Using squeezed states it is possible to surpass the standard quantum limit of measurement uncertainty by reducing the measurement uncertainty of one property at the expense of another complementary property. Squeezed states were first demonstrated in optical fields and later with ensembles of pseudo spin-1/2 atoms using non-linear atom-light interactions. Recently, collisional interactions in ultracold atomic gases have been used to generate a large degree of quadrature spin squeezing in two-component Bose condensates. For pseudo spin-1/2 systems, the complementary properties are the different components of the total spin vector <S>, which fully characterize the state on an SU(2) Bloch sphere. Here, we measure squeezing in a spin-1 Bose condensate, an SU(3) system, which requires measurement of the rank-2 nematic or quadrupole tensor <Q_ij> as well to fully characterize the state. Following a quench through a nematic to ferromagnetic quantum phase transition, squeezing is observed in the variance of the quadratures up to -8.3(-0.7 +0.6) dB (-10.3(-0.9 +0.7) dB corrected for detection noise) below the standard quantum limit. This spin-nematic squeezing is observed for negligible occupation of the squeezed modes and is analogous to optical two-mode vacuum squeezing. This work has potential applications to continuous variable quantum information and quantum-enhanced magnetometry.
