Measurement of differential cross sections for $Σ^+p$ elastic scattering in the momentum range 0.44-0.80 GeV/c

We performed a novel $Σ^+ p$ scattering experiment at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Approximately 2400 $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering events were identified from $4.9 \times 10^7$ tagged $Σ^+$ particles in the $Σ^+$ momentum range 0.44 -- 0.80 GeV/$c$. The differential cross sections of the $Σ^+ p$ elastic scattering were derived with much better precision than in previous experiments. The obtained differential cross sections were approximately 2 mb/sr or less, which were not as large as those predicted by the fss2 and FSS models based on the quark cluster model in the short-range region. By performing phase-shift analyses for the obtained differential cross sections, we experimentally derived the phase shifts of the $^3 S_1$ and $^1 P_1$ channels for the first time. The phase shift of the $^3 S_1$ channel, where a large repulsive core was predicted owing to the Pauli effect between quarks, was evaluated as $20^\circ<|δ_{^3S_1}|<35^\circ$. If the sign of $δ_{^3S_1}$ is assumed to be negative, the interaction in this channel is moderately repulsive, as the Nijmegen extended-sort-core models predicted.

Precise measurement of differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction in momentum range 470-650 MeV/c

The differential cross sections of the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction were measured accurately for the Σ- momentum (p_{Σ}) ranging from 470 to 650 MeV/c at the J-PARC Hadron Experimental Facility. Precise angular information about the Σ-p --> Λ n reaction was obtained for the first time by detecting approximately 100 reaction events at each angular step of Δcosθ = 0.1. The obtained differential cross sections show slightly forward-peaking structure in the measured momentum regions. The cross sections integrated for -0.7 < cosθ < 1.0 were obtained as 22.5 +- 0.68 (stat.) +- 0.65 (syst.) mb and 15.8 +-0.83(stat.) +- 0.52 (syst.) mb for 470<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<550 and 550<p_{Σ}(MeV/c)<650, respectively. These results show a drastic improvement compared to past measurements of the hyperon-proton scattering experiments. They will play essential roles in updating the theoretical models of the baryon-baryon interactions.

Observation of Coulomb-assisted nuclear bound state of $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system

In an emulsion-counter hybrid experiment performed at J-PARC, a $Ξ^-$ absorption event was observed which decayed into twin single-$Λ$ hypernuclei. Kinematic calculations enabled a unique identification of the reaction process as $Ξ^{-} + ^{14}$N$\ \rightarrow\ ^{10}_Λ$Be + $^5_Λ$He. For the binding energy of the $Ξ^{-}$ hyperon in the $Ξ^-$-$^{14}$N system a value of $1.27 \pm 0.21$ MeV was deduced. The energy level of $Ξ^-$ is likely a nuclear $1p$ state which indicates a weak $ΞN$-$ΛΛ$ coupling.

Reexamination of $^{6}$Li scattering as a Probe to Investigate the Isoscalar Giant Resonances in Nuclei

Inelastic ${}^{6}$Li scattering at 100 MeV/u on ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb have been measured with the high-resolution magnetic spectrometer Grand Raiden. The magnetic-rigidity settings of the spectrometer covered excitation energies from 10 to 40 MeV and scattering angles in the range $0^\circ < θ_{\text{lab.}}< 2^\circ$. The isoscalar giant monopole resonance was selectively excited in the present data. Measurements free of instrumental background and the very favorable resonance-to-continuum ratio of ${}^{6}$Li scattering allowed for precise determination of the $E0$ strengths in ${}^{12}$C and ${}^{93}$Nb. It was found that the monopole strength in ${}^{12}$C exhausts $52 \pm 3^\text{(stat.)} \pm 8 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the energy-weighted sum rule (EWSR), which is considerably higher than results from previous $α$-scattering experiments. The monopole strength in ${}^{93}$Nb exhausts $92 \pm 4^\text{(stat.)} \pm 10 ^\text{(sys.)}$\% of the EWSR, and it is consistent with measurements of nuclei with mass number of $A\approx90$. Such comparison indicates that the isoscalar giant monopole resonance distributions in these nuclei are very similar, and no influence due to nuclear structure was observed.

First application of superconducting transition-edge-sensor microcalorimeters to hadronic-atom x-ray spectroscopy

High-resolution pionic-atom x-ray spectroscopy was performed with an x-ray spectrometer based on a 240-pixel array of superconducting transition-edge-sensor (TES) microcalorimeters at the piM1 beam line of the Paul Scherrer Institute. X-rays emitted by pionic carbon via the 4f->3d transition and the parallel 4d->3p transition were observed with a full-width-at-half-maximum energy resolution of 6.8 eV at 6.4 keV. Measured x-ray energies are consistent with calculated electromagnetic values which considered the strong-interaction effect assessed via the Seki-Masutani potential for the 3p energy level, and favor the electronic population of two filled 1s electrons in the K-shell. Absolute energy calibration with an uncertainty of 0.1 eV was demonstrated under a high-rate hadron beam condition of 1.45 MHz. This is the first application of a TES spectrometer to hadronic-atom x-ray spectroscopy and is an important milestone towards next-generation high-resolution kaonic-atom x-ray spectroscopy.

Observation of Spin-Dependent Charge Symmetry Breaking in $ΛN$ Interaction: Gamma-Ray Spectroscopy of $^4_{Λ}$He

The energy spacing between the ground-state spin doublet of $^4_Λ$He(1$^+$,0$^+$) was determined to be $1406 \pm 2 \pm 2$ keV, by measuring $γ$ rays for the $1^+ \to 0^+$ transition with a high efficiency germanium detector array in coincidence with the $^4$He$(K^-,π^-)$ $^4_Λ$He reaction at J-PARC. In comparison to the corresponding energy spacing in the mirror hypernucleus $^4_Λ$H, the present result clearly indicates the existence of charge symmetry breaking (CSB) in $ΛN$ interaction. It is also found that the CSB effect is large in the $0^+$ ground state but is by one order of magnitude smaller in the $1^+$ excited state, demonstrating that the $ΛN$ CSB interaction has spin dependence.

Precise determination of $^{12}_Λ$C level structure by $γ$-ray spectroscopy

Level structure of the $^{12}_Λ$C hypernucleus was precisely determined by means of $γ$-ray spectroscopy. We identified four $γ$-ray transitions via the $^{12}$C$(π^{+},K^{+}γ)$ reaction using a germanium detector array, Hyperball2. The spacing of the ground-state doublet $(2^{-}_{1},1^{-}_{1})$ was measured to be $161.5\pm0.3\text{(stat)}\pm0.3\text{(syst)}$\,keV from the direct $M1$ transition. Excitation energies of the $1^{-}_{2}$ and $1^{-}_{3}$ states were measured to be $2832\pm3\pm4$\,keV and $6050\pm8\pm7$\,keV, respectively. The obtained level energies provide definitive references for the reaction spectroscopy of $Λ$ hypernuclei.

Search for n-nbar oscillation in Super-Kamiokande

A search for neutron-antineutron ($n-\bar{n}$) oscillation was undertaken in Super-Kamiokande using the 1489 live-day or $2.45 \times 10^{34}$ neutron-year exposure data. This process violates both baryon and baryon minus lepton numbers by an absolute value of two units and is predicted by a large class of hypothetical models where the seesaw mechanism is incorporated to explain the observed tiny neutrino masses and the matter-antimatter asymmetry in the Universe. No evidence for $n-\bar{n}$ oscillation was found, the lower limit of the lifetime for neutrons bound in ${}^{16}$O, in an analysis that included all of the significant sources of experimental uncertainties, was determined to be $1.9 \times 10^{32}$~years at the 90\% confidence level. The corresponding lower limit for the oscillation time of free neutrons was calculated to be $2.7 \times 10^8$~s using a theoretical value of the nuclear suppression factor of $0.517 \times 10^{23}$~s$^{-1}$ and its uncertainty.

High-resolution search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via a pion-induced reaction at J-PARC

The pentaquark $Θ^+$ has been searched for via the $π^-p \to K^-X$ reaction with beam momenta of 1.92 and 2.01 GeV/$c$ at J-PARC. A missing mass resolution of 2 MeV (FWHM) was achieved but no sharp peak structure was observed. The upper limits on the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle from 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame were found to be less than 0.28 $μ$b/sr at the 90\% confidence level for both the 1.92- and 2.01-GeV/$c$ data. The systematic uncertainty of the upper limits was controlled within 10\%. Constraints on the $Θ^+$ decay width were also evaluated with a theoretical calculation using effective Lagrangian. The present result implies that the width should be less than 0.36 and 1.9 MeV for the spin-parity of $1/2^+$ and $1/2^-$, respectively.

Multiple chiral doublet bands of identical configuration in 103Rh

Three sets of chiral doublet band structures have been identified in the 103Rh nucleus. The properties of the observed chiral doublet bands are in good agreement with theoretical results obtained using constrained covariant density functional theory and particle rotor model calculations. Two of them belong to an identical configuration, and provide the first experimental evidence for a novel type of multiple chiral doublets, where an "excited" chiral doublet of a configuration is seen together with the "yrast" one. This observation shows that the chiral geometry in nuclei can be robust against the increase of the intrinsic excitation energy.

Near threshold angular distributions of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X reaction

A study of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X reaction was performed using a tagged photon beam at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University. The photoproduced $Λ$ was measured in the $p{π^{-}}$ decay channel by the upgraded Neutral Kaon Spectrometer (NKS2+). The momentum integrated differential cross section was determined as a function of the scatting angle of $Λ$ in the laboratory frame for five energy bins. Our results indicated a peak in the cross section at angles smaller than cos$θ^{LAB}_Λ$ = $0.96$. The experimentally obtained angular distributions were compared to isobar models, Kaon-Maid (KM) and Saclay-Lyon A (SLA), in addition to the composite Regge-plus-resonance (RPR) model. Both SLA(r$K_{1}K_γ$ = $-1.4$) and RPR describe the data quite well in contrast to the KM model, which substantially under predicted the cross section at the most forward angles. With the anticipated finalized data on $Λ$ integrated and momentum dependent differential cross sections of $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X~\cite{Kaneta_Beckford}, we present our findings on the angular distributions in this report.

Measurements of the photon induced production of $Λ$ in the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X process at threshold energies

An experiment was carried out with the NKS2+ in 2010 at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), in which tagged photon beams in the range of 0.8 $\le$ $E_γ$ $\le$ 1.1 GeV were impinged on a liquid $^2$H target positioned at the center of the NKS2+. The produced $Λ$ was subsequently detected by the $p{π^{-}}$ decay channel. Integrated cross sections of the $^2$H$(γ,Λ)$X in the angular region of 0.9 $\le$ $\cosθ_Λ^{LAB}$ $\le$ 1.0 was derived and compared with preceding experimental results of the NKS2 collaboration. In addition, the momentum spectra for two photon energy regions were also procured. The $Λ$ angle dependent cross sections as a function of the scattering angle in the laboratory system was additionally deduced. We present the latest results on the excitation function of $Λ$ photoproduction, the momentum distributions, angular distributions, and polarization.

Numerical approach to multi-loop integrals

For the calculation of multi-loop Feynman integrals, a novel numerical method, the Direct Computation Method (DCM) is developed. It is a combination of a numerical integration and a series extrapolation. In principle, DCM can handle diagrams of arbitrary internal masses and external momenta, and can calculate integrals with general numerator function. As an example of the performance of DCM, a numerical computation of two-loop box diagrams is presented. Further discussion is given on the choice of control parameters in DCM. This method will be an indispensable tool for the higher order radiative correction when it is tested for a wider class of physical parameters and the separation of divergence is done automatically.

Report on strangeness photoproduction experiments performed with the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2

An experiment designed to investigate the strangeness photoproduction process using a tagged photon beam in the energy range of 0.90 -1.08 GeV incident on a liquid deuterium target was successfully performed. The purpose of the experiment was to measure the production of neutral kaons and the lambda particles on a deuteron. The generation of photo produced particles was verified by the measurement of their decayed charged particles in the Neutral Kaon Spectrometer 2. The reconstructed invariant mass distributions were achieved by selecting events where two or more particles tracks were identified. Preliminary results are presented here.

Search for the $Θ^{+}$ pentaquark via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction at 1.92 GeV/$c$

The $Θ^+$ pentaquark baryon was searched for via the $π^-p\to K^-X$ reaction in a missing-mass resolution of 1.4 MeV/$c^2$(FWHM) at J-PARC. $π^-$ meson beams were incident on the liquid hydrogen target with the beam momentum of 1.92 GeV/$c$. No peak structure corresponding to the $Θ^+$ mass was observed. The upper limit of the production cross section averaged over the scattering angle of 2$^{\circ}$ to 15$^{\circ}$ in the laboratory frame was obtained to be 0.26 $μ$b/sr in the mass region of 1.51$-$1.55 GeV/$c^2$.The upper limit of the $Θ^+$ decay width using the effective Lagrangian approach was obtained to be 0.72 MeV/$c^2$ and 3.1 MeV/$c^2$ for $J^P_Θ=1/2^+$ and $J^P_Θ=1/2^-$, respectively.

Time-optimal Unitary Operations in Ising Chains II: Unequal Couplings and Fixed Fidelity

We analytically determine the minimal time and the optimal control laws required for the realization, up to an assigned fidelity and with a fixed energy available, of entangling quantum gates ($\mathrm{CNOT}$) between indirectly coupled qubits of a trilinear Ising chain. The control is coherent and open loop, and it is represented by a local and continuous magnetic field acting on the intermediate qubit. The time cost of this local quantum operation is not restricted to be zero. When the matching with the target gate is perfect (fidelity equal to one) we provide exact solutions for the case of equal Ising coupling. For the more general case when some error is tolerated (fidelity smaller than one) we give perturbative solutions for unequal couplings. Comparison with previous numerical solutions for the minimal time to generate the same gates with the same Ising Hamiltonian but with instantaneous local controls shows that the latter are not time-optimal.

Chirality in odd-$A$ Rh isotopes within triaxial particle rotor model

Adopting the fully quantal triaxial particle rotor model, the candidate chiral doublet bands in odd-$A$ nuclei $^{103}$Rh and $^{105}$Rh with $πg_{9/2}^{-1}\otimesνh^{2}_{11/2}$ configuration are studied. For the doublet bands in both nuclei, agreement is excellent for the observed energies over entire spin range and $B(M1)/B(E2)$ at higher spin range. The evolution of the chiral geometry with angular momentum is discussed in detail by the angular momentum components and their probability distributions. Chirality is found to change from chiral vibration to nearly static chirality at spin $I=37/2$ and back to another type of chiral vibration at higher spin. The influence of the triaxial deformation $γ$ is also studied.

Relation between shrinkage effect and compression of rotational spectrum in $^7_Λ$Li hypernucleus

It has been shown experimentally that the $^6$Li nucleus shrinks by adding a $Λ$ particle while its spectrum is also compressed. We discuss the compatibility of these two effects, contrasting also with a relation between the shrinkage effect and the stability of the spectrum in the $^9_Λ$Be hypernucleus. To this end, we employ two-body $d$-$^5_Λ$He and $α$-$^5_Λ$He cluster models for the $^7_Λ$Li and $^9_Λ$Be hypernuclei, respectively. We first argue that a Gaussian-like interaction between two clusters leads to a stabilization of the spectrum against an addition of a $Λ$ particle, even though the intercluster distance is reduced. In the case of $^7_Λ$Li, the spin-orbit interaction between the intercluster motion and the deuteron spin has to be considered also. We show that the shrinkage effect makes the expectation value of the spin-orbit potential larger, lowering the excitation energy for the $^6$Li($3^+)\otimes Λ(1/2^+)$ level.

Shape of Lambda hypernuclei in (beta, gamma) deformation plane

We study the shape of $Λ$ hypernuclei in the full ($β,γ$) deformation plane, including both axially symmetric and triaxial quadrupole deformations. To this end, we use the constrained Skyrme Hartree-Fock+BCS method on the three-dimensional Cartesian mesh. The potential energy surface is analyzed for carbon hypernuclei as well as for sd-shell hypernuclei such as $^{27,29}_Λ$Si and $^{25,27}_Λ$Mg. We show that the potential energy surface in the ($β,γ$) plane is similar to each other between the hypernuclei and the corresponding core nuclei, although the addition of $Λ$ hyperon makes the energy surface somewhat softer along the $γ$ direction. Our calculation implies that the energy of the $γ$ vibration for $^{25,27}_Λ$Mg nuclei is lowered by about 0.15 MeV with respect to that of $^{24,26}$Mg nuclei.

Time-optimal CNOT between indirectly coupled qubits in a linear Ising chain

We give analytical solutions for the time-optimal synthesis of entangling gates between indirectly coupled qubits 1 and 3 in a linear spin chain of three qubits subject to an Ising Hamiltonian interaction with equal coupling $J$ plus a local magnetic field acting on the intermediate qubit. The energy available is fixed, but we relax the standard assumption of instantaneous unitary operations acting on single qubits. The time required for performing an entangling gate which is equivalent, modulo local unitary operations, to the $\mathrm{CNOT}(1, 3)$ between the indirectly coupled qubits 1 and 3 is $T=\sqrt{3/2} J^{-1}$, i.e. faster than a previous estimate based on a similar Hamiltonian and the assumption of local unitaries with zero time cost. Furthermore, performing a simple Walsh-Hadamard rotation in the Hlibert space of qubit 3 shows that the time-optimal synthesis of the $\mathrm{CNOT}^{\pm}(1, 3)$ (which acts as the identity when the control qubit 1 is in the state $\ket{0}$, while if the control qubit is in the state $\ket{1}$ the target qubit 3 is flipped as $\ket{\pm}\rightarrow \ket{\mp}$) also requires the same time $T$.

Quantum Brachistochrone for Mixed States

We present a general formalism based on the variational principle for finding the time-optimal quantum evolution of mixed states governed by a master equation, when the Hamiltonian and the Lindblad operators are subject to certain constraints. The problem reduces to solving first a fundamental equation (the {\it quantum brachistochrone}) for the Hamiltonian, which can be written down once the constraints are specified, and then solving the constraints and the master equation for the Lindblad and the density operators. As an application of our formalism, we study a simple one-qubit model where the optimal Lindblad operators control decoherence and can be simulated by a tunable coupling with an ancillary qubit. It is found that the evolution through mixed states can be more efficient than the unitary evolution between given pure states. We also discuss the mixed state evolution as a finite time unitary evolution of the system plus an environment followed by a single measurement. For the simplest choice of the constraints, the optimal duration time for the evolution is an exponentially decreasing function of the environment's degrees of freedom.

Effect of the shape anisotropy on the magnetic configuration of (Ga,Mn)As and its evolution with temperature

We study the effect of the shape anisotropy on the magnetic domain configurations of a ferromagnetic semiconductor (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs(001) epitaxial wire as a function of temperature. Using magnetoresistance measurements, we deduce the magnetic configurations and estimate the relative strength of the shape anisotropy compared with the intrinsic anisotropies. Since the intrinsic anisotropy is found to show a stronger temperature dependence than the shape anisotropy, the effect of the shape anisotropy on the magnetic domain configuration is relatively enhanced with increasing temperature. This information about the shape anisotropy provides a practical means of designing nanostructured spin electronic devices using (Ga,Mn)As.
