Chaos in QCD? Gap equations and their fractal properties

We discuss how iterative solutions of QCD inspired gap-equations at finite chemical potential show domains of chaotic behavior as well as non-chaotic domains which represent one or the other of the only two -- usually distinct -- positive mass gap solutions with broken or restored chiral symmetry, respectively. In the iterative approach gap solutions exist which exhibit restored chiral symmetry beyond a certain dynamical cut-off energy. A chirally broken, non-chaotic domain with no emergent mass poles and hence with no quasi-particle excitations exists below this energy cutoff. The transition domain between these two energy separated domains is chaotic. As a result, the dispersion relation is that of quarks with restored chiral symmetry, cut at a dynamical energy scale, determined by fractal structures. We argue that the chaotic origin of the infrared cut-off could hint at a chaotic nature of confinement and the deconfinement phase transition.

CompOSE - CompStar Online Supernovae Equations of State

This paper is the manual of the CompOSE service, see http://compose.obspm.fr, an equation of state (EoS) database for use in nuclear physics and in astrophysical applications, e.g. the simulation of core-collapse supernovae and compact stars. The main aims of the service are the following: to offer a robust, easily extendable data format to store and read EoS data tables and related physical quantities; to make these data available to the public -- respecting the original work by the contributors -- in a standard format designed for easy access and flexibility; and to provide routines to interpolate these data in the parameter space of density, temperature and hadronic charge fraction. The manual contains a detailed description of the service. It is divided into three parts, containing a general introduction as well as instructions for potential contributors and for users.

Diquark Condensates and Compact Star Cooling

The effect of color superconductivity on the cooling of quark stars and neutron stars with large quark cores is investigated. Various known and new quark-neutrino processes are studied. As a result, stars being in the color flavor locked (CFL) color superconducting phase cool down extremely fast. Quark stars with no crust cool down too rapidly in disagreement with X-ray data. The cooling of stars being in the N_f =2 color superconducting (2SC) phase with a crust is compatible with existing X-ray data. Also the cooling history of stars with hypothetic pion condensate nuclei and a crust does not contradict the data.
