A search for correlated low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND with gamma-ray bursts

We present the results of a time-coincident event search for low-energy electron antineutrinos in the KamLAND detector with gamma-ray bursts from the Gamma-ray Coordinates Network and Fermi Gamma-ray Burst Monitor. Using a variable coincidence time window of $\pm$500s plus the duration of each gamma-ray burst, no statistically significant excess above background is observed. We place the world's most stringent 90% confidence level upper limit on the electron antineutrino fluence below 17.5 MeV. Assuming a Fermi-Dirac neutrino energy spectrum from the gamma-ray burst source, we use the available redshift data to constrain the electron antineutrino luminosity and effective temperature.

KamLAND's search for correlated low-energy electron antineutrinos with astrophysical neutrinos from IceCube

We report the results of a search for MeV-scale astrophysical neutrinos in KamLAND presented as an excess in the number of coincident neutrino interactions associated with the publicly available high-energy neutrino datasets from the IceCube Neutrino Observatory. We find no statistically significant excess in the number of observed low-energy electron antineutrinos in KamLAND, given a coincidence time window of $\pm$500s, $\pm$1,000s, $\pm$3,600s, and $\pm$10,000s around each of the IceCube neutrinos. We use this observation to present limits from 1.8 MeV to 100 MeV on the electron antineutrino fluence, assuming a mono-energetic flux. We then compare the results to several astrophysical measurements performed by IceCube and place a limit at the 90% confidence level on the electron antineutrino isotropic thermal luminosity from the TXS 0506+056 blazar.

Pre-Supernova Alert System for Super-Kamiokande

In 2020, the Super-Kamiokande (SK) experiment moved to a new stage (SK-Gd) in which gadolinium (Gd) sulfate octahydrate was added to the water in the detector, enhancing the efficiency to detect thermal neutrons and consequently improving the sensitivity to low energy electron anti-neutrinos from inverse beta decay (IBD) interactions. SK-Gd has the potential to provide early alerts of incipient core-collapse supernovae through detection of electron anti-neutrinos from thermal and nuclear processes responsible for the cooling of massive stars before the gravitational collapse of their cores. These pre-supernova neutrinos emitted during the silicon burning phase can exceed the energy threshold for IBD reactions. We present the sensitivity of SK-Gd to pre-supernova stars and the techniques used for the development of a pre-supernova alarm based on the detection of these neutrinos in SK, as well as prospects for future SK-Gd phases with higher concentrations of Gd. For the current SK-Gd phase, high-confidence alerts for Betelgeuse could be issued up to nine hours in advance of the core-collapse itself.

Search for proton decay via $p\rightarrow μ^+K^0$ in 0.37 megaton-years exposure of Super-Kamiokande

We searched for proton decay via $p\toμ^+K^0$ in 0.37\,Mton$\cdot$years of data collected between 1996 and 2018 from the Super-Kamiokande water Cherenkov experiment. The selection criteria were defined separately for $K^0_S$ and $K^0_L$ channels. No significant event excess has been observed. As a result of this analysis, which extends the previous search by an additional 0.2\,Mton$\cdot$years of exposure and uses an improved event reconstruction, we set a lower limit of $3.6\times10^{33}$ years on the proton lifetime.

A Search for Charged Excitation of Dark Matter with the KamLAND-Zen Detector

There are many theories where a dark matter particle is part of a multiplet with an electrically charged state. If WIMP dark matter ($χ^{0}$) is accompanied by a charged excited state ($χ^{-}$) separated by a small mass difference, it can form a stable bound state with a nucleus. In supersymmetric models, the $χ^{0}$ and the $χ^{-}$ could be the neutralino and a charged slepton, such as the neutralino-stau degenerate model. The formation binding process is expected to result in an energy deposition of {\it O}(1--10 MeV), making it suitable for detection in large liquid scintillator detectors. We describe new constraints on the bound state formation with a xenon nucleus using the KamLAND-Zen 400 Phase-II dataset. In order to enlarge the searchable parameter space, all xenon isotopes in the detector were used. For a benchmark parameter set of $m_{χ^{0}} = 100$ GeV and $Δm = 10$ MeV, this study sets the most stringent upper limits on the recombination cross section $\langleσv\rangle$ and the decay-width of $χ^{-}$ of $2.0 \times 10^{-31}$ ${\rm cm^3/s}$ and $1.1 \times 10^{-18}$ GeV, respectively (90\% confidence level).

First Gadolinium Loading to Super-Kamiokande

In order to improve Super-Kamiokande's neutron detection efficiency and to thereby increase its sensitivity to the diffuse supernova neutrino background flux, 13 tons of $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ (gadolinium sulfate octahydrate) was dissolved into the detector's otherwise ultrapure water from July 14 to August 17, 2020, marking the start of the SK-Gd phase of operations. During the loading, water was continuously recirculated at a rate of 60 m$^3$/h, extracting water from the top of the detector and mixing it with concentrated $\rm Gd_2(\rm SO_4)_3\cdot \rm 8H_2O$ solution to create a 0.02% solution of the Gd compound before injecting it into the bottom of the detector. A clear boundary between the Gd-loaded and pure water was maintained through the loading, enabling monitoring of the loading itself and the spatial uniformity of the Gd concentration over the 35 days it took to reach the top of the detector. During the subsequent commissioning the recirculation rate was increased to 120 m$^3$/h, resulting in a constant and uniform distribution of Gd throughout the detector and water transparency equivalent to that of previous pure-water operation periods. Using an Am-Be neutron calibration source the mean neutron capture time was measured to be $115\pm1$ $μ$s, which corresponds to a Gd concentration of $111\pm2$ ppm, as expected for this level of Gd loading. This paper describes changes made to the water circulation system for this detector upgrade, the Gd loading procedure, detector commissioning, and the first neutron calibration measurements in SK-Gd.

Limits on astrophysical antineutrinos with the KamLAND experiment

We report on a search for electron antineutrinos ($\barν_e$) from astrophysical sources in the neutrino energy range 8.3 to 30.8 MeV with the KamLAND detector. In an exposure of 6.72 kton-year of the liquid scintillator, we observe 18 candidate events via the inverse beta decay reaction. Although there is a large background uncertainty from neutral current atmospheric neutrino interactions, we find no significant excess over background model predictions. Assuming several supernova relic neutrino spectra, we give upper flux limits of 60--110 cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (90% CL) in the analysis range and present a model-independent flux. We also set limits on the annihilation rates for light dark matter pairs to neutrino pairs. These data improves on the upper probability limit of $^{8}$B solar neutrinos converting into $\barν_e$'s, $P_{ν_e \rightarrow \barν_e} < 3.5\times10^{-5}$ (90% CL) assuming an undistorted $\barν_e$ shape. This corresponds to a solar $\barν_e$ flux of 60 cm$^{-2}$ s$^{-1}$ (90% CL) in the analysis energy range.

Search for Solar Flare Neutrinos with the KamLAND detector

We report the result of a search for neutrinos in coincidence with solar flares from the GOES flare database. The search was performed on a 10.8 kton-year exposure of KamLAND collected from 2002 to 2019. This large exposure allows us to explore previously unconstrained parameter space for solar flare neutrinos. We found no statistical excess of neutrinos and established 90% confidence level upper limits of $8.4 \times 10^7$ cm$^{-2}$ ($3.0 \times 10^{9}$ cm$^{-2}$) on electron anti-neutrino (electron neutrino) fluence at 20 MeV normalized to the X12 flare, assuming that the neutrino fluence is proportional to the X-ray intensity.

The Hyper-Kamiokande Experiment -- Snowmass LOI

Hyper-Kamiokande is the next generation underground water Cherenkov detector that builds on the highly successful Super-Kamiokande experiment. The detector which has an 8.4~times larger effective volume than its predecessor will be located along the T2K neutrino beamline and utilize an upgraded J-PARC beam with 2.6~times beam power. Hyper-K's low energy threshold combined with the very large fiducial volume make the detector unique, that is expected to acquire an unprecedented exposure of 3.8~Mton$\cdot$year over a period of 20~years of operation. Hyper-Kamiokande combines an extremely diverse science program including nucleon decays, long-baseline neutrino oscillations, atmospheric neutrinos, and neutrinos from astrophysical origins. The scientific scope of this program is highly complementary to liquid-argon detectors for example in sensitivity to nucleon decay channels or supernova detection modes. Hyper-Kamiokande construction has started in early 2020 and the experiment is expected to start operations in 2027. The Hyper-Kamiokande collaboration is presently being formed amongst groups from 19 countries including the United States, whose community has a long history of making significant contributions to the neutrino physics program in Japan. US physicists have played leading roles in the Kamiokande, Super-Kamiokande, EGADS, K2K, and T2K programs.

Tenth-Order Electron Anomalous Magnetic Moment --- Contribution of Diagrams without Closed Lepton Loops

This paper presents a detailed account of evaluation of the electron anomalous magnetic moment a_e which arises from the gauge-invariant set, called Set V, consisting of 6354 tenth-order Feynman diagrams without closed lepton loops. The latest value of the sum of Set V diagrams evaluated by the Monte-Carlo integration routine VEGAS is 8.726(336)(α/π)^5, which replaces the very preliminary value reported in 2012. Combining it with other 6318 tenth-order diagrams published previously we obtain 7.795(336)(α/π)^5 as the complete mass-independent tenth-order term. Together with the improved value of the eighth-order term this leads to a_e(theory)=1 159 652 181.643(25)(23)(16)(763) \times 10^{-12}, where first three uncertainties are from the eighth-order term, tenth-order term, and hadronic and elecroweak terms. The fourth and largest uncertainty is from α^{-1}=137.035 999 049(90), the fine-structure constant derived from the rubidium recoil measurement. Thus, a_e(experiment) - a_e(theory)= -0.91(0.82) \times 10^{-12}. Assuming the validity of the standard model, we obtain the fine-structure constant α^{-1}(a_e)=137.035 999 1570(29)(27)(18)(331), where uncertainties are from the eighth-order term, tenth-order term, hadronic and electroweak terms, and the measurement of a_e. This is the most precise value of αavailable at present and provides a stringent constraint on possible theories beyond the standard model.

The excitation of rogue waves in a variable medium: an experimental study on the interaction of water waves and currents

We show experimentally that a stable wave propagating into a region characterized by an opposite current may become modulationaly unstable. Experiments have been performed in two independent wave tank facilities; both of them are equipped with a wavemaker and a pump for generating a current propagating in the opposite direction with respect to the waves. The experimental results support a recent conjecture based on a current-modified Nonlinear Schrödinger equation which establishes that rogue waves can be triggered by non-homogeneous current characterized by a negative horizontal velocity gradient.

Tenth-Order QED Contribution to the Lepton Anomalous Magnetic Moment -- Sixth-Order Vertices Containing an Internal Light-by-Light-Scattering Subdiagram

This paper reports the tenth-order QED contribution to the lepton g-2 from the gauge-invariant set, called Set III(c), which consists of 390 Feynman vertex diagrams containing an internal fourth-order light-by-light-scattering subdiagram. The mass-independent contribution of Set III(c) to the electron g-2 (a_e) is 4.9210(103) in units of (alpha/pi)^5. The mass-dependent contributions to a_e from diagrams containing a muon loop is 0.00370(37) (alpha/pi)^5. The tau-lepton loop contribution is negligible at present. Altogether the contribution of Set III(c) to a_e is 4.9247 (104) (alpha/pi)^5. We have also evaluated the contribution of the closed electron loop to the muon g-2 (a_mu). The result is 7.435(134) (alpha/pi)^5. The contribution of the tau-lepton loop to a_mu is 0.1999(28)(alpha/pi)^5. The total contribution of variousleptonic loops (electron, muon, and tau-lepton) of Set III(c) to a_mu is 12.556 (135) (alpha/pi)^5.

Evolution of magnetism in Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2

We present a study of the evolution of magnetism from the quantum critical system YbRh2Si2 to the stable trivalent Yb system YbCo2Si2. Single crystals of Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 were grown for 0 < x < 1 and studied by means of magnetic susceptibility, electrical resistivity, and specific heat measurements, as well as photoemission spectroscopy. The results evidence a complex magnetic phase diagram, with a non-monotonic evolution of T_N and two successive transitions for some compositions resulting in two tricritical points. The strong similarity with the phase diagram of YbRh2Si2 under pressure indicates that Co substitution basically corresponds to the application of positive chemical pressure. Analysis of the data proves a strong reduction of the Kondo temperature T_K with increasing Co content, T_K becoming smaller than T_N for x ~ 0.5, implying a strong localization of the 4f electrons. Furthermore, low-temperature susceptibility data confirm a competition between ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic exchange. The series Yb(Rh_(1-x)Co_x)2Si2 provides an excellent experimental opportunity to gain a deeper understanding of the magnetism at the quantum critical point in the vicinity of YbRh2Si2 where the antiferromagnetic phase disappears (T_N=>0).

The contribution of tau-lepton loop is negligible at present. The sum of all these terms is 0.017 47 (11) (alpha/pi)^5. The contribution of diagrams containing electron loop to the muon g-2 is 0.087 1 (59) (alpha/pi)^5. That of tau-lepton loop is 0.000 237 (1) (alpha/pi)^5. The total contribution to a_mu, the sum of these terms and the mass-independent term, is 0.104 8 (59) (alpha/pi)^5.

The total contributions of the electron, muon, and tau-lepton loops to a_e are -0.116 874 (32) (alpha/pi)^5 for Set II(c) and -0.243 10 (29) (alpha/pi)^5 for Set II(d). The contributions of electron, muon, and tau-lepton loops to a_mu are -5.5594 (11) (alpha/pi)^5 for Set II(c) and 0.2465 (65) (alpha/pi)^5 for Set II(d).

Tenth-order lepton g-2: Contribution from diagrams containing a sixth-order light-by-light-scattering subdiagram internally

This paper reports the result of our evaluation of the tenth-order QED correction to the lepton g-2 from Feynman diagrams which have sixth-order light-by-light-scattering subdiagrams, none of whose vertices couple to the external magnetic field. The gauge-invariant set of these diagrams, called Set II(e), consists of 180 vertex diagrams. In the case of the electron g-2 (a_e), where the light-by-light subdiagram consists of the electron loop, the contribution to a_e is found to be - 1.344 9 (10) (α/π)^5. The contribution of the muon loop to a_e is - 0.000 465 (4) (α/π)^5. The contribution of the tau-lepton loop is about two orders of magnitudes smaller than that of the muon loop and hence negligible. The sum of all of these contributions to a_e is - 1.345 (1) (α/π)^5. We have also evaluated the contribution of Set II(e) to the muon g-2 (a_μ). The contribution to a_μfrom the electron loop is 3.265 (12) (α/π)^5, while the contribution of the tau-lepton loop is -0.038 06 (13) (α/π)^5. The total contribution to a_μ, which is the sum of these two contributions and the mass-independent part of a_e, is 1.882 (13) (α/π)^5.

Tenth-order lepton g-2: Contribution of some fourth-order radiative corrections to the sixth-order g-2 containing light-by-light-scattering subdiagrams

This paper reports the tenth-order QED contribution to lepton g-2 from diagrams of three gauge-invariant sets VI(d), VI(g), and VI(h), which are obtained by including various fourth-order radiative corrections to the sixth-order g-2 containing light-by-light-scattering subdiagrams. In the case of electron g-2, they consist of 492, 480, and 630 vertex Feynman diagrams, respectively. The results of numerical integration, including mass-dependent terms containing muon loops, are 1.8418(95) (alpha/pi)^5 for the Set VI(d), -1.5918(65) (alpha/pi)^5 for the Set VI(g), and 0.1797(40) (alpha/pi)^5 for the Set VI(h), respectively. We also report the contributions to the muon g-2, which derive from diagrams containing an electron, muon or tau lepton loop: Their sums are -5.876(802) (alpha/pi)^5 for the Set VI(d), 5.710(490) (alpha/pi)^5 for the Set VI(g), and -8.361(232) (alpha/pi)^5 for the Set VI(h), respectively.

Photoproduction of neutral kaons on the liquid deuterium target in the threshold region

The photoproduction process of neutral kaons on a liquid deuterium target is investigated near the threshold region, Egamma = 0.8-1.1 GeV. K0 events are reconstructed from positive and negative pions, and differential cross sections are derived. Experimental momentum spectra are compared with those calculated in the spectator model using a realistic deuteron wave function. Elementary amplitudes as given by recent isobar models and a simple phenomenological model are used to study the effect of the new data on the angular behavior of the elementary cross section. The data favor a backward-peaked angular distribution of the elementary n(gamma,K0)Lambda process, which provides additional constraints on current models of kaon photoproduction. The present study demonstrates that the n(gamma,K0)Lambda reaction can provide key information on the mechanism of the photoproduction of strangeness.

Pseudoscalar pole terms in the hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to muon $ g - 2 $

The pseudoscalar pole contribution is the dominant source of the $ {\cal O}(α^3) $ hadronic light-by-light scattering effect in muon $g - 2$. We have examined this contribution taking account of the off-shell structure of the pseudoscalar-photon-photon anomaly vertex deduced from available experimental data. Our work leads to an improved estimate, $ -79.2 (15.4) \times 10^{-11}$, for the total hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to the muon $g - 2$.

Radiative Corrections to the Muonium Hyperfine Structure. II. The $α(Zα)^2 $ Correction

This is the second of a series of papers on the radiative corrections of order $α^2 (Zα)$, $α(Zα)^2$, and various logarithmic terms of order $α^4$, to the hyperfine structure of the muonium ground state. This paper deals with the $α(Zα)^2$ correction. Based on the NRQED bound state theory, we isolated the term of order $α(Zα)^2$ exactly. Our result $+16.904 2 (11) α(Zα)^2 E_F / π$ for the non-logarithmic part is consistent with the $α(Zα)^2$ part of Sapirstein's calculation and the recent result of Pachucki, and reduces the numerical uncertainty in the $α(Zα)^2$ term by two orders of magnitude.

Hadronic Light-by-light Scattering Contribution to Muon $ g - 2 $

The hadronic light-by-light scattering contribution to muon $g-2$ is examined based on the low energy effective theories of QCD, the Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model and hidden local symmetry approach, supplemented by a general information concerning the asymptotic behavior of QCD. Our result is $- 52 \times 10^{-11}$ with an uncertainty of $\pm 18 \times 10^{-11}$, which includes our best estimate of model dependence. This is within the expected measurement uncertainty of $40\times 10^{-11}$ in the forthcoming experiment at Brookhaven National Laboratory. Our result removes one of the main theoretical obstacles in verifying the existence of the weak contribution to the muon $g-2$.
