Energy gaps in quantum first-order mean-field-like transitions: The problems that quantum annealing cannot solve

We study first-order quantum phase transitions in models where the mean-field traitment is exact, and the exponentially fast closure of the energy gap with the system size at the transition. We consider exactly solvable ferromagnetic models, and show that they reduce to the Grover problem in a particular limit. We compute the coefficient in the exponential closure of the gap using an instantonic approach, and discuss the (dire) consequences for quantum annealing.

First-order transitions and the performance of quantum algorithms in random optimization problems

We present a study of the phase diagram of a random optimization problem in presence of quantum fluctuations. Our main result is the characterization of the nature of the phase transition, which we find to be a first-order quantum phase transition. We provide evidence that the gap vanishes exponentially with the system size at the transition. This indicates that the Quantum Adiabatic Algorithm requires a time growing exponentially with system size to find the ground state of this problem.

Strong universality and algebraic scaling in two-dimensional Ising spin glasses

At zero temperature, two-dimensional Ising spin glasses are known to fall into several universality classes. Here we consider the scaling at low but non-zero temperature and provide numerical evidence that $η\approx 0$ and $ν\approx 3.5$ in all cases, suggesting a unique universality class. This algebraic (as opposed to exponential) scaling holds in particular for the $\pm J$ model, with or without dilutions and for the plaquette diluted model. Such a picture, associated with an exceptional behavior at T=0, is consistent with a real space renormalization group approach. We also explain how the scaling of the specific heat is compatible with the hyperscaling prediction.

Testing the fixed-point QCD action and the construction of chiral currents

We present the first set of quenched QCD measurements using the recently parametrized fixed-point Dirac operator D^FP. We also give a general and practical construction of covariant densities and conserved currents for chiral lattice actions. The measurements include (a) hadron spectroscopy, (b) corrections of small chiral deviations, (c) the renormalized quark condensate from finite-size scaling and, independently, spectroscopy, (d) the topological susceptibility, (e) small eigenvalue distributions and random matrix theory, and (f) local chirality of near-zero modes and instanton-dominance.

Chiral measurements with the Fixed-Point Dirac operator and construction of chiral currents

In this preliminary study, we examine the chiral properties of the parametrized Fixed-Point Dirac operator D^FP, see how to improve its chirality via the Overlap construction, measure the renormalized quark condensate Sigma and the topological susceptibility chi_t, and investigate local chirality of near zero modes of the Dirac operator. We also give a general construction of chiral currents and densities for chiral lattice actions.
