Do Delta Baryons Play a Role in Neutron Stars?

The presence of exotic hadrons, such as hyperons and $Δ$ isobars, in the dense nuclear matter in their cores has been shown to produce important changes in the properties of neutron stars. Within the quark-meson coupling model, we show that the many-body forces generated by the change in the internal quark structure of the baryons in the strong scalar mean fields generated in dense nuclear matter prohibit the appearance of $Δ$ isobars.

Roles of crust and core in the tidal deformability of neutron stars

With the recent measurement of GW170817 providing constraints on the tidal deformability of a neutron star, it is very important to understand what features of the equation of state have the biggest effect on it. We therefore study the contribution of the crust to the tidal deformability and the moment of inertia of a neutron star for a variety of well-known equations of state. It is found that the contributions to these quantities from the low density crust are typically quite small and as a result the determination of the tidal deformability provides an important constraint on the equation of state of dense matter.

Compact stars with strongly coupled quark matter in a strong magnetic field

Some time ago we have derived from the QCD Lagrangian an equation of state (EOS) for the cold quark matter, which can be considered an improved version of the MIT bag model EOS. Compared to the latter, our equation of state reaches higher values of the pressure at comparable baryon densities. This feature is due to perturbative corrections and also to non-perturbative effects. Later we applied this EOS to the study of compact stars, discussing the absolute stability of quark matter and computing the mass-radius relation for self-bound (strange) stars. We found maximum masses of the sequences with more than two solar masses, in agreement with the recent experimental observations. In the present work we include the magnetic field in the equation of state and study how it changes the stability conditions and the mass-radius curves.
