New Improved Massive Gravity and Three Dimensional Spacetimes of Constant Curvature and Constant Torsion

We derive the field equations for topologically massive gravity coupled with the most general quadratic curvature terms using the language of exterior differential forms and a first order constrained variational principle. We find variational field equations both in the presence and absence of torsion. We then show that spaces of constant negative curvature (i.e. the anti de-Sitter space $AdS_3$) and constant torsion provide exact solutions.

Born-Infeld Axion-Dilaton Electrodynamics and Electromagnetic Confinement

A generalization of Born-Infeld non-linear vacuum electrodynamics involving axion and dilaton fields is constructed with couplings dictated by electromagnetic duality and SL(2,R) symmetries in the weak field limit. Besides the Newtonian gravitational constant the model contains a single fundamental coupling parameter b0. In the absence of axion and dilaton interactions it reduces, in the limit as b0 tends to infinity, to Maxwell's linear vacuum theory while for finite b0 it reduces to the original Born-Infeld model. The spherically symmetric static sector of the theory is explored in a background Minkowski spacetime where numerical evidence suggests the existence of axion-dilaton bound states possessing confined electric flux.

Non-minimally Coupled Gravitational and Electromagnetic Fields: pp-Wave Solutions

We give the Lagrangian formulation of a generic non-minimally extended Einstein-Maxwell theory with an action that is linear in the curvature and quadratic in the electromagnetic field. We derive the coupled field equations by a first order variational principle using the method of Lagrange multipliers. We look for solutions describing plane-fronted Einstein-Maxwell waves with parallel rays. We give a family of exact solutions associated with a partially massless spin-2 photon and a partially massive spin-2 graviton.

Charged relativistic fluids and non-linear electrodynamics

The electromagnetic fields in Maxwell's theory satisfy linear equations in the classical vacuum. This is modified in classical non-linear electrodynamic theories. To date there has been little experimental evidence that any of these modified theories are tenable. However with the advent of high-intensity lasers and powerful laboratory magnetic fields this situation may be changing. We argue that an approach involving the self-consistent relativistic motion of a smooth fluid-like distribution of matter (composed of a large number of charged or neutral particles) in an electromagnetic field offers a viable theoretical framework in which to explore the experimental consequences of non-linear electrodynamics. We construct such a model based on the theory of Born and Infeld and suggest that a simple laboratory experiment involving the propagation of light in a static magnetic field could be used to place bounds on the fundamental coupling in that theory. Such a framework has many applications including a new description of the motion of particles in modern accelerators and plasmas as well as phenomena in astrophysical contexts such as in the environment of magnetars, quasars and gamma-ray bursts.

Einstein-Cartan-Dirac Theory in (1+2)-Dimensions

Einstein-Cartan theory is formulated in (1+2)-dimensions using the algebra of exterior differential forms. A Dirac spinor is coupled to gravity and the field equations are obtained by a variational principle. The space-time torsion is found to be given algebraically in terms of the Dirac field. Circularly symmetric, exact solutions that collapse to AdS_3 geometry in the absence of a Dirac spinor are found.

Canonical transformations in three-dimensional phase space

Canonical transformation in a three-dimensional phase space endowed with Nambu bracket is discussed in a general framework. Definition of the canonical transformations is constructed as based on canonoid transformations. It is shown that generating functions, transformed Hamilton functions and the transformation itself for given generating functions can be determined by solving Pfaffian differential equations corresponding to that quantities. Types of the generating functions are introduced and all of them is listed. Infinitesimal canonical transformations are also discussed. Finally, we show that decomposition of canonical transformations is also possible in three-dimensional phase space as in the usual two-dimensional one.

Quantum canonical transformations in Weyl-Wigner-Groenewold-Moyal formalism

A conjecture in quantum mechanics states that any quantum canonical transformation can decompose into a sequence of three basic canonical transformations; gauge, point and interchange of coordinates and momenta. It is shown that if one attempts to construct the three basic transformations in star-product form, while gauge and point transformations are immediate in star-exponential form, interchange has no correspondent, but it is possible in an ordinary exponential form. As an alternative approach, it is shown that all three basic transformations can be constructed in the ordinary exponential form and that in some cases this approach provides more useful tools than the star-exponential form in finding the generating function for given canonical transformation or vice versa. It is also shown that transforms of c-number phase space functions under linear-nonlinear canonical transformations and intertwining method can be treated within this argument.

General analysis of self-dual solutions for the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory in (1+2) dimensions

The solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell-Chern-Simons theory are studied in (1+2) dimensions with the self-duality condition imposed on the Maxwell field. We give a closed form of the general solution which is determined by a single function having the physical meaning of the quasilocal angular momentum of the solution. This function completely determines the geometry of spacetime, also providing the direct computation of the conserved total mass and angular momentum of the configurations.

Self-gravitating line sources of weak hypercharge

We explore the role of the Cremmer-Scherk mechanism in the context of low energy effective string theory by coupling the antisymmetric 3-form gauge potential to an Abelian gauge potential carrying weak hypercharge. The theory admits a class of exact self-gravitating solutions in the spontaneously broken phase in which the dual fields acquire massive perturbative modes. Despite the massive nature of these fields they admit non-perturbative progressive longitudinal modes that together with pp-type gravitational waves travel in a direction of a line source at the speed of light.

The Geometry of Self-dual 2-forms

We show that self-dual 2-forms in 2n dimensional spaces determine a $n^2-n+1$ dimensional manifold ${\cal S}_{2n}$ and the dimension of the maximal linear subspaces of ${\cal S}_{2n}$ is equal to the (Radon-Hurwitz) number of linearly independent vector fields on the sphere $S^{2n-1}$. We provide a direct proof that for $n$ odd ${\cal S}_{2n}$ has only one-dimensional linear submanifolds. We exhibit $2^c-1$ dimensional subspaces in dimensions which are multiples of $2^c$, for $c=1,2,3$. In particular, we demonstrate that the seven dimensional linear subspaces of ${\cal S}_{8}$ also include among many other interesting classes of self-dual 2-forms, the self-dual 2-forms of Corrigan, Devchand, Fairlie and Nuyts and a representation of ${\cal C}l_7$ given by octonionic multiplication. We discuss the relation of the linear subspaces with the representations of Clifford algebras.
