Index Divisibility in Dynamical Sequences and Cyclic Orbits Modulo $p$

Let $ϕ(x) = x^d + c$ be an integral polynomial of degree at least 2, and consider the sequence $(ϕ^n(0))_{n=0}^\infty$, which is the orbit of $0$ under iteration by $ϕ$. Let $D_{d,c}$ denote the set of positive integers $n$ for which $n \mid ϕ^n(0)$. We give a characterization of $D_{d,c}$ in terms of a directed graph and describe a number of its properties, including its cardinality and the primes contained therein. In particular, we study the question of which primes $p$ have the property that the orbit of $0$ is a single $p$-cycle modulo $p$. We show that the set of such primes is finite when $d$ is even, and conjecture that it is infinite when $d$ is odd.

Discriminants of simplest 3^n-tic extensions

Let $\ell>2$ be a positive integer, $ζ_\ell$ a primitive $\ell$-th root of unity, and $K$ a number field containing $ζ_\ell+ζ_\ell^{-1}$ but not $ζ_\ell$. In a recent paper, Chonoles et. al. study iterated towers of number fields over $K$ generated by the generalized Rikuna polynomial, $r_n(x,t;\ell) \in K(t)[x]$. They note that when $K = \mathbb{Q}$, $t \in \{0,1\}$, and $\ell=3$, the only ramified prime in the resulting tower is 3, and they ask under what conditions is the number of ramified primes small. In this paper, we apply a theorem of Guàrdia, Montes, and Nart to derive a formula for the discriminant of $\mathbb{Q}(θ)$ where $θ$ is a root of $r_n(x,t;3)$, answering the question of Chonoles et. al. in the case $K = \mathbb{Q}$, $\ell=3$, and $t \in \mathbb{Z}$. In the latter half of the paper, we identify some cases where the dynamics of $r_n(x,t;\ell)$ over finite fields yields an explicit description of the decomposition of primes in these iterated extensions.

Chebyshev Action on Finite Fields

Given a polynomial f and a finite field F one can construct a directed graph where the vertices are the values in the finite field, and emanating from each vertex is an edge joining the vertex to its image under f. When f is a Chebyshev polynomial of prime degree, the graphs display an unusual degree of symmetry. In this paper we provide a complete description of these graphs, and also provide some examples of how these graphs can be used to determine the decomposition of primes in certain field extensions.
