Cheaper access to universal fluctuations in integrable spin chains from boundary effects

Observing super-diffusive fluctuations from Kardar-Parisi-Zhang (KPZ) universality in isotropic integrable spin chains is usually challenging as it requires a fairly large number of spins in interaction. We demonstrate in this paper, in the context of classical spins, that accounting for boundary effects lowers the bar, down to a few dozen spins in some cases. Additionally, boundaries control the relaxation to stationarity, which leads to many new universal scaling functions to explore, both in periodic spin chains and for open chains with magnetization imposed by reservoirs at the ends.

Spectral gaps of open TASEP in the maximal current phase

We study spectral gaps of the one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with open boundaries in the maximal current phase. Earlier results for the model with periodic boundaries suggest that the gaps contributing to the universal KPZ regime may be understood as points on an infinite genus Riemann surface built from a parametric representation of the cumulant generating function of the current. We perform explicit analytic continuations from the known large deviations of the current for open TASEP, and confirm the results for the gaps by an exact Bethe ansatz calculation, with additional checks using high precision extrapolation numerics.

Riemann surfaces for KPZ with periodic boundaries

The Riemann surface for polylogarithms of half-integer index, which has the topology of an infinite dimensional hypercube, is studied in relation to one-dimensional KPZ universality in finite volume. Known exact results for fluctuations of the KPZ height with periodic boundaries are expressed in terms of meromorphic functions on this Riemann surface, summed over all the sheets of a covering map to an infinite cylinder. Connections to stationary large deviations, particle-hole excitations and KdV solitons are discussed.

Extrapolation methods and Bethe ansatz for the asymmetric exclusion process

The one-dimensional asymmetric simple exclusion process (ASEP), where $N$ hard-core particles hop forward with rate $1$ and backward with rate $q<1$, is considered on a periodic lattice of $L$ site. Using KPZ universality and previous results for the totally asymmetric model $q=0$, precise conjectures are formulated for asymptotics at finite density $ρ=N/L$ of ASEP eigenstates close to the stationary state. The conjectures are checked with high precision using extrapolation methods on finite size Bethe ansatz numerics. For weak asymmetry $1-q\sim1/\sqrt{L}$, double extrapolation combined with an integer relation algorithm gives an exact expression for the spectral gap up to $10$-th order in the asymmetry.

Finite-time fluctuations for the totally asymmetric exclusion process

The one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP), a Markov process describing classical hard-core particles hopping in the same direction, is considered on a periodic lattice of $L$ sites. The relaxation to the non-equilibrium steady state, which occurs on the time scale $t\sim L^{3/2}$ for large $L$, is studied for the half-filled system with $N=L/2$ particles. Using large $L$ asymptotics of Bethe ansatz formulas for the eigenstates, exact expressions depending explicitly on the rescaled time $t/L^{3/2}$ are obtained for the average and two-point function of the local density, and for the current fluctuations for simple (stationary, flat and step) initial conditions, relating previous results for the infinite system to stationary large deviations. The final formulas have a nice interpretation in terms of a functional integral with the action of a scalar field in a linear potential.

Asymptotics for the norm of Bethe eigenstates in the periodic totally asymmetric exclusion process

The normalization of Bethe eigenstates for the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring of $L$ sites is studied, in the large $L$ limit with finite density of particles, for all the eigenstates responsible for the relaxation to the stationary state on the KPZ time scale $T\sim L^{3/2}$. In this regime, the normalization is found to be essentially equal to the exponential of the action of a scalar free field. The large $L$ asymptotics is obtained using the Euler-Maclaurin formula for summations on segments, rectangles and triangles, with various singularities at the borders of the summation range.

Current fluctuations and large deviations for periodic TASEP on the relaxation scale

The one-dimensional totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with $N$ particles on a periodic lattice of $L$ sites is an interacting particle system with hopping rates breaking detailed balance. The total time-integrated current of particles $Q$ between time $0$ and time $T$ is studied for this model in the thermodynamic limit $L,N\to\infty$ with finite density of particles $\overlineρ=N/L$. The current $Q$ takes at leading order a deterministic value which follows from the hydrodynamic evolution of the macroscopic density profile by the inviscid Burgers' equation. Using asymptotics of Bethe ansatz formulas for eigenvalues and eigenvectors, an exact expression for the probability distribution of the fluctuations of $Q$ is derived on the relaxation time scale $T\sim L^{3/2}$ for an evolution conditioned on simple initial and final states. For flat initial and final states, a large deviation function expressed simply in terms of the Airy function is obtained at small rescaled time $T/L^{3/2}$.

Current fluctuations for totally asymmetric exclusion on the relaxation scale

The fluctuations of the current for the one-dimensional totally asymmetric exclusion process with $L$ sites are studied in the relaxation regime of times $T\sim L^{3/2}$. Using Bethe ansatz for the periodic system with an evolution conditioned on special initial and final states, the Fourier transform of the probability distribution of the fluctuations is calculated exactly in the thermodynamic limit $L\to\infty$ with finite density of particles. It is found to be equal to a sum over discrete realizations of a scalar field in a linear potential with coupling constant equal to the rescaled time $T/L^{3/2}$.

Spectrum of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice -- first excited states

We consider the spectrum of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice of $L$ sites. The first eigenstates have an eigenvalue with real part scaling as $L^{-3/2}$ for large $L$ with finite density of particles. Bethe ansatz shows that these eigenstates are characterized by four finite sets of positive half-integers, or equivalently by two integer partitions. Each corresponding eigenvalue is found to be equal to the value at its saddle point of a function indexed by the four sets. Our derivation of the large $L$ asymptotics relies on a version of the Euler-Maclaurin formula with square root singularities at both ends of the summation range.

Spectrum of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process on a periodic lattice - bulk eigenvalues

We consider the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) on a periodic one-dimensional lattice of L sites. Using Bethe ansatz, we derive parametric formulas for the eigenvalues of its generator in the thermodynamic limit. This allows to study the curve delimiting the edge of the spectrum in the complex plane. A functional integration over the eigenstates leads to an expression for the density of eigenvalues in the bulk of the spectrum. The density vanishes with an exponent 2/5 close to the eigenvalue 0.

Generalized matrix Ansatz in the multispecies exclusion process - partially asymmetric case

We investigate one of the simplest multispecies generalization of the asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring. This process has a rich combinatorial spectral structure and a matrix product form for the stationary state. In the totally asymmetric case operators that conjugate the dynamics of systems with different numbers of species were obtained by the authors and reported recently. The existence of such nontrivial operators was reformulated as a representation problem for a specific quadratic algebra (generalized matrix Ansatz). In the present work, we construct the family of representations explicitly for the partially asymmetric case. This solution cannot be obtained by a simple deformation of the totally asymmetric case.

The propagator of the attractive delta-Bose gas in one dimension

We consider the quantum delta-Bose gas on the infinite line. For repulsive interactions, Tracy and Widom have obtained an exact formula for the quantum propagator. In our contribution we explicitly perform its analytic continuation to attractive interactions. We also study the connection to the expansion of the propagator in terms of the Bethe ansatz eigenfunctions. Thereby we provide an independent proof of their completeness.

Recursive structures in the multispecies TASEP

We consider a multi-species generalization of the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) with the simple hopping rule: for x and yth-class particles (x<y), the transition xy -> yx occurs with a rate independent from the values x and y. P. A. Ferrari and J. Martin (2007) obtained the stationary state of this model thanks to a combinatorial algorithm, which was subsequently interpreted as a matrix product representation by Evans et al. (2009). This `matrix ansatz' shows that the stationary state of the multi-species TASEP with N classes of particles (N-TASEP) can be constructed algebraically by the action of an operator on the (N-1)-TASEP stationary state. Besides, Arita et al. (2009) analyzed the spectral structure of the Markov matrix: they showed that the set of eigenvalues of the N-TASEP contains those of the (N-1)-TASEP and that the various spectral inclusions can be encoded in a hierarchical set-theoretic structure known as the Hasse diagram. Inspired by these works, we define nontrivial operators that allow us to construct eigenvectors of the N-TASEP by lifting the eigenvectors of the (N-1)-TASEP. This goal is achieved by generalizing the matrix product representation and the Ferrari-Martin algorithm. In particular, we show that the matrix ansatz is not only a convenient tool to write the stationary state but in fact intertwines Markov matrices of different values of N.

The height distribution of the KPZ equation with sharp wedge initial condition: numerical evaluations

The time-dependent probability distribution function of the height for the Kardar-Parisi-Zhang equation with sharp wedge initial conditions has been obtained recently as a convolution between the Gumbel distribution and a difference of two Fredholm determinants. We evaluate numerically this distribution over the whole time span. The crossover from the short time behavior, which is Gaussian, to the long time behavior, which is governed by the GUE Tracy-Widom distribution, is clearly visible.

The One-dimensional KPZ Equation and the Airy Process

Our previous work on the one-dimensional KPZ equation with sharp wedge initial data is extended to the case of the joint height statistics at n spatial points for some common fixed time. Assuming a particular factorization, we compute an n-point generating function and write it in terms of a Fredholm determinant. For long times the generating function converges to a limit, which is established to be equivalent to the standard expression of the n-point distribution of the Airy process.

Two-point generating function of the free energy for a directed polymer in a random medium

We consider a 1+1 dimensional directed continuum polymer in a Gaussian delta-correlated space-time random potential. For this model the moments (= replica) of the partition function, Z(x,t), can be expressed in terms of the attractive delta-Bose gas on the line. Based on a recent study of the structure of the eigenfunctions, we compute the generating function for Z(x_1,t), Z(x_2,t) under a particular decoupling assumption and thereby extend recent results on the one-point generating function of the free energy to two points. It is established that in the long time limit the fluctuations of the free energy are governed by the two-point distribution of the Airy process, which further supports that the long time behavior of the KPZ equation is the same as derived previously for lattice growth models.

Tree structures for the current fluctuations in the exclusion process

We consider the asymmetric simple exclusion process on a ring, with an arbitrary asymmetry between the hopping rates of the particles. Using a functional formulation of the Bethe equations of the model, we derive exact expressions for all the cumulants of the current in the stationary state. These expressions involve tree structures with composite nodes. In the thermodynamic limit, three regimes can be observed for the current fluctuations depending on how the asymmetry scales with the size of the system.
