Beyond Fixed Topologies: Unregistered Training and Comprehensive Evaluation Metrics for 3D Talking Heads

Generating speech-driven 3D talking heads presents numerous challenges; among those is dealing with varying mesh topologies where no point-wise correspondence exists across the meshes the model can animate. While previous literature works assume fixed mesh structures, in this work we present the first framework capable of animating 3D faces in arbitrary topologies, including real scanned data. Our approach leverages heat diffusion to predict features that are robust to the mesh topology. We explore two training settings: a registered one, in which meshes in a training sequences share a fixed topology but any mesh can be animated at test time, and an fully unregistered one, which allows effective training with varying mesh structures. Additionally, we highlight the limitations of current evaluation metrics and propose new metrics for better lip-syncing evaluation. An extensive evaluation shows our approach performs favorably compared to fixed topology techniques, setting a new benchmark by offering a versatile and high-fidelity solution for 3D talking heads where the topology constraint is dropped. The code along with the pre-trained model are available.

3D Shape Sequence of Human Comparison and Classification using Current and Varifolds

In this paper we address the task of the comparison and the classification of 3D shape sequences of human. The non-linear dynamics of the human motion and the changing of the surface parametrization over the time make this task very challenging. To tackle this issue, we propose to embed the 3D shape sequences in an infinite dimensional space, the space of varifolds, endowed with an inner product that comes from a given positive definite kernel. More specifically, our approach involves two steps: 1) the surfaces are represented as varifolds, this representation induces metrics equivariant to rigid motions and invariant to parametrization; 2) the sequences of 3D shapes are represented by Gram matrices derived from their infinite dimensional Hankel matrices. The problem of comparison of two 3D sequences of human is formulated as a comparison of two Gram-Hankel matrices. Extensive experiments on CVSSP3D and Dyna datasets show that our method is competitive with state-of-the-art in 3D human sequence motion retrieval. Code for the experiments is available at https://github.com/CRISTAL-3DSAM/HumanComparisonVarifolds.

Sub-Riemannian structures on groups of diffeomorphisms

In this paper, we define and study strong right-invariant sub-Riemannian structures on the group of diffeomorphisms of a manifold with bounded geometry. We derive the Hamiltonian geodesic equations for such structures, and we provide examples of normal and of abnormal geodesics in that infinite-dimensional context. The momentum formulation gives a sub-Riemannian version of the Euler-Arnol'd equation. Finally, we establish some approximate and exact reachability properties for diffeomorphisms, and we give some consequences for Moser theorems.

Shape deformation analysis from the optimal control viewpoint

A crucial problem in shape deformation analysis is to determine a deformation of a given shape into another one, which is optimal for a certain cost. It has a number of applications in particular in medical imaging. In this article we provide a new general approach to shape deformation analysis, within the framework of optimal control theory, in which a deformation is represented as the flow of diffeomorphisms generated by time-dependent vector fields. Using reproducing kernel Hilbert spaces of vector fields, the general shape deformation analysis problem is specified as an infinite-dimensional optimal control problem with state and control constraints. In this problem, the states are diffeomorphisms and the controls are vector fields, both of them being subject to some constraints. The functional to be minimized is the sum of a first term defined as geometric norm of the control (kinetic energy of the deformation) and of a data attachment term providing a geometric distance to the target shape. This point of view has several advantages. First, it allows one to model general constrained shape analysis problems, which opens new issues in this field. Second, using an extension of the Pontryagin maximum principle, one can characterize the optimal solutions of the shape deformation problem in a very general way as the solutions of constrained geodesic equations. Finally, recasting general algorithms of optimal control into shape analysis yields new efficient numerical methods in shape deformation analysis. Overall, the optimal control point of view unifies and generalizes different theoretical and numerical approaches to shape deformation problems, and also allows us to design new approaches. The optimal control problems that result from this construction are infinite dimensional and involve some constraints, and thus are nonstandard. In this article we also provide a rigorous and complete analysis of the infinite-dimensional shape space problem with constraints and of its finite-dimensional approximations.

Approximation of sequences of symmetric matrices with the symmetric rank-one algorithm and applications

The symmetric rank-one update method is well-known in optimization for its applications in the quasi-Newton algorithm. In particular, Conn, Gould, and Toint proved in 1991 that the matrix sequence resulting from this method approximates the Hessian of the minimized function. Expanding their idea, we prove that the symmetric rank-one update algorithm can be used to approximate any sequence of symmetric invertible matrices, thereby adding a variety of applications to more general problems, such as the computation of constrained geodesics in shape analysis imaging problems. We also provide numerical simulations for the method and some of these applications.
