On a model with two scalar leptoquarks -- $R_2$ and $S_3$

We discuss a model that can accommodate the $B$-physics anomalies, based on combining two scalar leptoquarks, $R_2$ and $S_3$, of mass $\mathcal{O}(1\,\mathrm{TeV})$, and that we proposed in our previous paper. We update the analysis of its parameter space and show that a model remains viable and consistent with a number of low energy and high energy flavor physics constraints. Since the model predicts a non-zero New Physics phase, we discuss the possibility to test its contribution to the neutron electric dipole moment and to the angular distributions of the exclusive $b\to cτ\bar ν$ decays. We find that the model can provide a significant enhancement to $\mathcal{B}(B\to K^{(\ast)}νν)$ and provides both the upper and lower bounds to $\mathcal{B}(B\to K^{(\ast)}μτ)$.

Triple-leptoquark interactions for tree- and loop-level proton decays

We study the impact of triple-leptoquark interactions on matter stability for two specific proton decay topologies that arise at the tree- and one-loop level if and when they coexist. We demonstrate that the one-loop level topology is much more relevant than the tree-level one when it comes to the proton decay signatures despite the usual loop-suppression factor. We subsequently present detailed analysis of the triple-leptoquark interaction effects on the proton stability within one representative scenario to support our claim, where the scenario in question simultaneously features a tree-level topology that yields three-body proton decay $p\to e^+ e^+ e^-$ and a one-loop level topology that induces two-body proton decays $p\to π^0 e^+$ and $p\to π^+ \barν$. We also provide a comprehensive list of the leading-order proton decay channels for all non-trivial cubic and quartic contractions involving three scalar leptoquark multiplets that generate triple-leptoquark interactions of our interest, where in the latter case one of the scalar multiplets is the Standard Model Higgs doublet.

Novel Leptoquark Pair Production at LHC

We introduce a novel mechanism for the leptoquark pair production at LHC that is of a $t$-channel topology and is quark-quark initiated. This mechanism operates under fairly general conditions. One of them is that the two leptoquarks in question couple to the same lepton and the other one is that the fermion numbers of these two leptoquarks differ by two. The strength of the proposed mechanism provides an alternative way to the conventional processes to efficiently constrain the parameter space of the two leptoquark scenarios at LHC whenever the aforementioned conditions are met. We accordingly present one case study to outline the physics potential of this novel production mechanism.

Implications of $b\to sμμ$ Anomalies for Future Measurements of $B \to K^{(*)} ν\bar ν$ and $K\to πν\bar ν$

We investigate the consequences of deviations from the Standard Model observed in $b\to sμμ$ transitions for flavour-changing neutral-current processes involving down-type quarks and neutrinos. We derive the relevant Wilson coefficients within an effective field theory approach respecting the SM gauge symmetry, including right-handed currents, a flavour structure based on approximate $U(2)$ symmetry, and assuming only SM-like light neutrinos. We discuss correlations among $B \to K^{(*)} ν\bar ν$ and $K\to πν\bar ν$ branching ratios in the case of linear Minimal Flavour Violation and in a more general framework, highlighting in each case the role played by various New Physics scenarios proposed to explain $b\to sμμ$ deviations.

Muon $g-2$ and scalar leptoquark mixing

The observed muon anomalous magnetic moment deviates from the Standard Model predictions. There are two scalar leptoquarks with simultaneous couplings to the quark-muon pairs of both chiralities that can singly explain this discrepancy. We discuss an alternative mechanism that calls for the mixing of two scalar leptoquarks of the same electric charge through the interaction with the Higgs field, where the two leptoquarks separately couple to the quark-muon pairs of opposite chirality structures. Three scenarios that satisfy this requirement are $S_1\,\&\, {S}_3$, $\widetilde{S}_1\,\&\, S_3$, and $\widetilde{R}_2\,\&\, R_2$, where the first scenario is realised with the up-type quarks running in the loops while the other two scenarios proceed through the down-type quark loops. We introduce only two non-zero Yukawa couplings to the relevant quarks and a muon, at the time, to study ability of these three scenarios to explain $(g-2)_μ$ and be in accord with available experimental constraints. We find that the $S_1\,\&\, {S}_3$ scenario with the top-quark loops is consistent with all existing measurements. The $\widetilde{S}_1\,\&\, S_3$ and $\widetilde{R}_2\,\&\, R_2$ scenarios can accommodate the observed discrepancy through the bottom-quark loops but exhibit significant tension with the existing data on the high-$p_T$ dilepton-tails at LHC for the required values of Yukawa couplings and leptoquark masses.

A comparative study of the $S_1$ and $U_1$ leptoquark effects in the light quark regime

We study the phenomenology of two leptoquarks, the Standard Model $SU(2)$ singlets $S_1$ and $U_1$, with regard to the latest experimental data from the low-energy flavor physics measurements, LHC, and the IceCube neutrino experiment. We consider a scenario when scalar (vector) leptoquark $S_1$ ($U_1$) couples exclusively to the down quark and the neutrinos (charged leptons) of all flavors, where the leptoquark in question couples to the SM lepton doublets. The couplings of $S_1$ ($U_1$) to the up-type quarks and the charged leptons (neutrinos) are in turn uniquely determined via $SU(2)$ symmetry. We find that the most important constraints on the leptoquark parameter space originate from flavor physics measurements, followed by the LHC search limits that take over the flavor physics ones in the large LQ mass regime. We furthermore show that $S_1$ ($U_1$) marginally improves (spoils) the fit of the current IceCube data with respect to the SM case within the region of parameter space that is otherwise consistent with various low-energy flavor physics measurements and the latest LHC input. Our study offers an up-to-date analysis for these two leptoquarks in view of the latest experimental data.

Light Mediators in Anomaly Free $U(1)_X$ Models I - Theoretical Framework

We examine theoretical features of $U(1)_X$ extensions of the Standard Model whose quantum anomalies are canceled per generation. Similarly to other versions, the theory consists of a Two-Higgs-Doublet Model plus a scalar singlet embedded into the $SM \otimes U(1)_X$ gauge group, and introduces small modifications to the $Z$-boson interactions. These changes can be minimized by exclusively charging right-handed fermions under the new Abelian symmetry, and are compensated by the neutral $X$-boson exchange. Non-universality of fermion couplings can also be achieved by requiring one single $X$-charged family. In general, $X$ gauge bosons can be separated into $A'$ (dark photons) and $Z'$ subsets, distinguished by the presence of axial-vector currents. $A'$ physics is commonly simpler to constrain and therefore favored by experimental tests. Finally, the model can be UV completed both by stable $χ$ fermions or by right-handed neutrinos. The prior case may provide cold WIMPs in the theory.

Light Mediators in Anomaly Free $U(1)_X$ Models II - Constraints on Dark Gauge Bosons

We consider experimental constraints in the MeV region in order to determine the parameter space for the $U(1)_X$ extension of the Standard Model, presented in the first part of our work. In particular, we focus on the model UV-completed by cold WIMPs. We conclude that the electron anomalous magnetic moment, the neutrino trident production and the relic abundance $Ω_{CDM}$ provide the most stringent bounds and, in particular cases, they are sufficient to exclude dark-photon ($A'$) models. By allowing the axial-vector coupling of the dark gauge boson $Z'$, the interference effect with the SM gauge bosons may reduce the bounds coming from the trident neutrino production. At the same time, such coupling allows a region of the parameter space already favored both by the relic abundance and by the discrepancy between experimental result and theoretical prediction for the muon anomalous magnetic moment. We emphasize that light-$Z'$ interactions, non-universal for the two first lepton families, necessarily create a difference in the proton charge radius measured in the Lamb shift of the $e$-hydrogen and $μ$-hydrogen. Finally, we determine the effects of the new gauge boson on the forward-backward asymmetry in $e^+ e^- \rightarrow \bar{f} f$, $f = μ, τ$, and on the leptonic decays $M \rightarrow j ν_j l^+ l^-$, where $M = π, K, D, D_s, B$ and $j,l = e, μ$.

Angular distributions of $\bar B \to D^{(\ast)}\ell\bar ν_\ell$ decays and search of New Physics

We derive the expressions for the full angular distributions of $\bar B\to D\ell\bar ν_\ell$ and $\bar B\to D^{\ast }\ell\bar ν_\ell$ decays and discuss the spectra on each angle separately. The coefficient functions, depending on helicity amplitudes, can then be combined in an ensemble of observables which can then be used to check for the presence of New Physics. We examine the sensitivity of each of these observables on the presence of non-Standard Model interaction terms at low energies. The expressions presented here are general and can be used for studying any other semileptonic pseudoscalar to pseudoscalar/vector meson decay. We also examine the problem of pollution of the $\bar B\to D^{\ast}(\to Dπ)_S\ell\bar ν_\ell$ decay sample by the $\bar B\to D_0^{\ast}(\to Dπ)\ell\bar ν_\ell$ events, and point out that a measurement of two particular quantities could clarify whether or not the $(Dπ)_{S-\rm wave}$ in the vicinity of $D^\ast$-peak is (approximately) described by the Breit-Wigner formula.

Is symmetry breaking of SU(5) theory responsible for the diphoton excess?

We advocate the possibility that the observed diphoton excess at 750 GeV at the LHC can be addressed by the scalar field that is a part of the SU(5) symmetry breaking sector. The field in question is the Standard Model singlet that resides in the adjoint representation that breaks SU(5) down to SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1). We also show that the required production and subsequent decay to two photons of this singlet can be induced by individual or combined contribution of two scalar multiplets $S_3$ and $R_2$ that transform as (3,3,-1/3) and (3,2,7/6) under SU(3) x SU(2) x U(1), respectively. The individual dominance of these multiplets is directly related to the issue of the charged fermion mass generation within the SU(5) framework and can be unambiguously tested through the diboson decay signatures of the Standard Model singlet field.

Isospin violating decays of positive parity $B_s$ mesons in HM$χ$PT

Recent lattice QCD results suggest that the masses of the first two positive parity $B_s$ mesons lie below the BK threshold, similar to the case of $D^*_{s0}(2317)^+$ and $D_{s1}(2460)^+$ mesons. The mass spectrum of $B_s$ mesons seems to follow pattern of $D_s$ mass spectrum. As in the case of charmed mesons, the structure of positive parity $B_s$ mesons is very intriguing. To shed more light on this issue, we investigate strong isospin violating decays $B_s(0^+) \to B_s^0 π^0$, $B_s(1^+) \to B_s^{*0} π^0$ and $B_s(1^+) \to B_s^0 ππ$ within heavy meson chiral perturbation theory. The two body decay amplitude arises at the tree level and we show that the loop corrections give significant contributions. On the other hand, in the case of three body decay $B_s(1^+) \to B_s^0 ππ$ amplitude occurs only at the loop level. We find that the decay widths for these decays are: $Γ(B_s(1^+) \to B_s^0 ππ)\sim 10^{-3}\,$keV and $Γ(B_s(0^+) \to B_s^0 π^0) \leq 55\,$keV, $Γ(B_s(1^+) \to B_s^{*0} π^0) \leq 50\,$keV. More precise knowledge of the coupling constant describing the interaction of positive and negative parity heavy mesons with light pseudoscalar mesons would help to increase accuracy of our calculation.

Lepton flavor non-universality in $b \to s \ell^+ \ell^-$ processes

We explore a scenario of New Physics entering the description of $B\to K^{(\ast )} μμ$ decay through couplings to the operators ${\cal O}_{9,10}^\prime$, satisfying $C_9^\prime = - C_{10}^\prime$. From the current data on ${\cal B}(B_s\to μμ)$ and ${\cal B}(B\to K μμ)_{[15,22] \,\mathrm{GeV}^2}$, we obtain constraints on $\mathrm{Re} C_{10}^\prime$ and $\mathrm{Im} C_{10}^\prime$ which we then assume to be lepton specific, and find $R_K= {\cal B}(B\to K μμ)/ {\cal B}(B\to K ee)_{[1,6]\,\mathrm{GeV}^2}=0.88(8)$, consistent with recent value measured at LHCb. A specific realization of this scenario is the one with a scalar leptoquark state $Δ$, in which $C_{10}^\prime$ is related to the mass of $Δ$ and its Yukawa couplings. We then show that this scenario does not make any significant impact on $B_s-\overline B_s$ mixing amplitude nor to $ {\cal B}(B\to Kν\bar ν)$. Instead, it can modify $R_{K^\ast}= {\cal B}(B\to K^\ast μμ)/ {\cal B}(B\to K^\ast ee)_{[1,6]\,\mathrm{GeV}^2}$, which will soon be experimentally measured and we find it to be $R_{K^\ast}= 1.11(8)$, while $R_{K^\ast}/R_K= 1.27(19)$. A similar ratio of forward-backward asymmetries also becomes lower than in the Standard Model.

Leptoquark model to explain the $B$-physics anomalies, $R_K$ and $R_D$

We show that a model with a scalar leptoquark of hypercharge $Y=1/6$ which includes the light right-handed neutrinos, can successfully describe both of the $B$-physics anomalies, $R_K^{\rm exp} < R_K^{\rm SM}$ and $R_D^{\rm exp} > R_D^{\rm SM}$. We discuss the corresponding low energy effective theory and, after using the known experimental data as constraints, we show that the model is viable and that it offers several predictions which can be tested experimentally.

Restrained Dark $U(1)_d$ at Low Energies

We investigate a spontaneously broken $U(1)_d$ gauge symmetry with a muon-specific dark Higgs. Our first goal is to verify how the presence of a new dark Higgs, $ϕ$, and a dark gauge boson, $V$, can simultaneously face the anomalies from the muon magnetic moment and the proton charge radius. Secondly, by assuming that $V$ must decay to an electron-positron pair, we explore the corresponding parameter space determined with the low energy constraints coming from $ K \to μX$, electron $(g-2)_e$, $K \to μν_μe^+ e^-$, $K \to μν_μμ^+ μ^-$, $τ\to ν_τμν_μe^+ e^-$. We focus in the scenario where the $V$ mass is below $ \sim 2 m_μ$ and the $ϕ$ mass runs from few MeV till $250$ MeV, with V-photon mixing of the order $ \sim\mathcal{O}(10^{-3})$. Among weak process at low energies, we check the influence of the new light vector on kaon decays as well as on the scattering $e^+ e^- \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- e^+ e^-$ and discuss the impact of the dark Higgs on $e^+ e^- \rightarrow μ^+ μ^- μ^+ μ^- $. Finally, we consider contributions of the V-photon mixing in the decays $π^0 \to γe^+ e^-$, $η\to γe^+ e^-$, $ρ\to πe^+ e^-$, $K^* \to K e^+ e^-$ and $ϕ(1020) \to ηe^+ e^-$.

Vector leptoquark resolution of $R_K$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ puzzles

We propose that three recent anomalies in $B$ meson decays, $R_{D^{(*)}}$, $R_K$, and $P_5'$, might be explained by a single vector leptoquark weak triplet state. The constraints on the parameter space are obtained by considering $t \to b τ^+ ν$ data, lepton flavor universality tests in the kaon sector, bounds on $B \to K^{(*)} \bar νν$, bound on the lepton flavor violating decay $B \to K μτ$, and measurements of $b \to c μ^- \barν$ decays. The presence of such vector leptoquark could be exposed in precise measurements of $t \to b τν$ and $B \to K^{(*)} \bar νν$ decays. The model also predicts approximate equality of lepton flavor universality ratios $R_{K^*}$, $R_{K}$, and suppressed branching fraction of $B_s \to μ^+ μ^-$.

Chiral loops in the isospin violating decays of D_{s1}(2460) and D*_{s0}(2317)

Positive parity meson states D*_{s0}(2317) and D_{s1}(2460) have masses slightly below the DK threshold. Therefore, both states can strongly decay only into isospin violating decays D_{s1}(2460) --> Ds ππ, D_{s1}(2460) --> Ds* π0 and D*_{s0}(2317) --> Ds π0. The pion states are having rather small energies, what makes these decays appropriate to study within heavy meson chiral perturbation theory and calculate loop contributions. The D_{s1}(2460) --> Ds ππdecays occur only at the loop level. Amplitude is a result of chiral loop contributions, which then have to be finite. However, in the case of D_{s1}(2460)--> Ds* π0 and D*_{s0}(2317)--> Ds π0 decays, there is a tree level contribution. We find that chiral loop contributions might be important in both cases. The calculated amplitudes are sensitive on the coupling constant describing the interaction of positive and negative parity heavy meson multiplets with the light pseudoscalars. The counter-terms contributions are also present in the amplitudes D_{s1}(2460) --> Ds* π0 and D*_{s0}(2317) --> Ds π0. We explore experimentally known ratio of the decay widths for these two decay modes to estimate the size of counter-terms contributions. We determine decay widths for both decay modes to be Gamma (D_{s1}(2460) --> Ds π+ π-) = 0.25 keV and Gamma (D_{s1}(2460) --> Ds + π0 π0 ) = 0.15 keV.

Discerning new physics in charm meson leptonic and semileptonic decays

Current experimental information on the charm meson decay observables in which the $c\to s\ellν_\ell$ transitions occur is well compatible with the Standard Model predictions. Recent precise lattice calculations of the $D_s$ meson decay constant and form factors in $D\to K\ellν$ decays offer a possibility to search for the small deviations from the Standard Model predictions in the next generation of the high intensity flavour experiments. We revisit constraints from these processes on the new physics contributions in the effective theory approach. We investigate new physics effects which might appear in the differential distributions for the longitudinally and transversely polarised $K^\ast$ in $D\to K^\ast\ellν_\ell$ decays. Present constraints from these observables are rather weak, but could be used to constrain new physics effects in the future. In the case of $D\to K\ellν$ we identify observables sensitive on new physics contribution coming from the scalar Wilson coefficient, namely the forward-backward and the transversal muon asymmetries. By allowing that new physics modifies only the second lepton generation but not the first one, we identify allowed region for the differential decay rate for the process $D\to Kμν_μ$ and find that it is allowed to deviate from the Standard Model prediction by only few percent. The lepton flavour universality violation can be tested in the ratio $R_{μ/e}(q^2)\equiv \frac{dΓ^{(μ)}}{dq^2}/\frac{dΓ^{(e)}}{dq^2}$. If the first lepton generation behaves as in the Standard Model, we find, using current constraint on the scalar Wilson coefficient, that the ratio $R_{μ/e}(q^2)$ is currently allowed to be within the range $(0.9, 1.2)$, depending on the value of $q^2$.

New Physics Models Facing Lepton Flavor Violating Higgs Decays at the Percent Level

We speculate about the possible interpretations of the recently observed excess in the $h \to τμ$ decay. We derive a robust lower bound on the Higgs boson coupling strength to a tau and a muon, even in presence of the most general new physics affecting other Higgs properties. Then we reevaluate complementary indirect constraints coming from low energy observables as well as from theoretical considerations. In particular, the tentative signal should lead to $τ\to μγ$ at rates which could be observed at Belle II. In turn we show that, barring fine-tuned cancellations, the effect can only be accommodated within models with an extended scalar sector. These general conclusions are demonstrated using a number of explicit new physics models. Finally we show how, given the $h \to τμ$ signal, the current and future searches for $μ\to e γ$ and $μ\to e$ nuclear conversions unambiguously constrain the allowed rates for $h \to τe$.

Theoretical perspective on rare and radiative charm decays

Recent experimental bounds on rare charm decays offer a chance to improve our theoretical understanding of physics present in $c \to u γ$ and $c \to u l^+ l^-$ transitions. Standard Model and New Physics contributions are reviewed for inclusive and exclusive $D \to Vγ$, $D^+ \to π^+ l^+ l^-$, $D \to l^+ l^-$ decays. Observables important for search of New Physics are discussed. Possibility to observe CP violation in rare charm decays is questioned.

Colored scalars and the neutron electric dipole moment

We investigate new contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment induced by colored scalars. As an example, we evaluate contributions coming from the color octet, weak doublet scalar, accommodated within a modified Minimal Flavor Violating framework. These flavor non-diagonal couplings of the color octet scalar might account for the $A_{CP} (D^0 \to K^- K^+) - A_{CP} (D^0 \to π^+ π^-)$ asymmetry on the tree level. Using these charm asymmetry constrained couplings, we calculate two-loop contributions to the neutron electric dipole moment and find that they are of the same order as the experimental bound. We comment also on contributions of higher dimensional operators to the neutron electric dipole moment within this framework.

Cornering Scalar Leptoquarks at LHC

We study implications of large lepton-quark-leptoquark couplings for direct leptoquark searches at Large Hadron Collider. We present all existing flavor constraints on the strength of these couplings assuming that leptoquarks under consideration interact exclusively with charged leptons and quarks of the same generation. We find that these leptoquarks can have sizeable couplings to the Standard Model fermions. This insures a self consistency of our study. We discuss the leptoquark production mechanisms at LHC and demonstrate the importance of inclusion of a t-channel pair production and, in particular, a single leptoquark production through a recast of an existing CMS search at LHC for the second generation leptoquark. Our recast yields the best direct limit on Yukawa coupling of the second generation leptoquark that couples to a muon and a strange quark to date.

Light vector-like fermions in a minimal SU(5) setup

The Standard Model fermion sector is enlarged by either one light singlet vector-like down-type quark or one light vector-like lepton doublet, which might be accommodated within a five-dimensional representation of SU(5). At low energies the inclusion of these states affects precisely measured observables in flavor physics, as well as electroweak precision measurements. These experimental results strongly constrain couplings of vector-like states to the Standard Model particles. Having these bounds, we investigate the impact of vector-like fermions on the mass matrices for down-type quarks and charged leptons in an SU(5) setting. We find that unitary transformations relating an arbitrary flavor basis to the mass eigenstate basis depend only on three free parameters. Then we discuss the parameter space constrained by low-energy data assuming vector-like quark and vector-like lepton masses to be 800 GeV and 400 GeV, respectively. We demonstrate that these two scenarios generate unique patterns for relevant proton decay widths. A further improvement of experimental bounds on proton decay modes would thus differentiate the allowed parameter space. We finally present two full-fledged SU(5) models that allow for gauge coupling unification with light vector-like fermions under consideration and discuss their viability.

Implications of lepton flavor universality violations in B decays

Present measurements of b->c tau nu and b->u tau nu transitions differ from the standard model predictions of lepton flavor universality by almost 4sigma. We examine new physics interpretations of this anomaly. An effective field theory analysis shows that minimal flavor violating models are not preferred as an explanation, but are also not yet excluded. Allowing for general flavor violation, right-right vector and right-left scalar quark currents are identified as viable candidates. We discuss explicit examples of two Higgs doublet models, leptoquarks as well as quark and lepton compositeness. Finally, implications for LHC searches and future measurements at the (super)B- factories are presented.

Light Higgs and Vector-like Quarks without Prejudice

Light vector-like quarks with non-renormalizable couplings to the Higgs are a common feature of models trying to address the electroweak (EW) hierarchy problem by treating the Higgs as a pseudo-goldstone boson of a global (approximate) symmetry. We systematically investigate the implications of the leading dimension five operators on Higgs phenomenology in presence of dynamical up- and down-type weak singlet as well as weak doublet vector-like quarks. After taking into account constraints from precision EW and flavour observables we show that contrary to the renormalizable models, significant modifications of Higgs properties are still possible and could shed light on the role of vector-like quarks in solutions to the EW hierarchy problem. We also briefly discuss implications of higher dimensional operators for direct vector-like quark searches at the LHC.

Minimally flavored colored scalar in $\bar B \to D^{(*)} τ\bar ν$ and the mass matrices constraints

The presence of a colored scalar that is a weak doublet with fractional electric charges of $|Q|=2/3$ and $|Q|=5/3$ with mass below 1,TeV can provide an explanation of the observed branching ratios in $B \to D^{(*)} τ\bar ν$ decays. The required combination of scalar and tensor operators in the effective Hamiltonian for $b \to c τ\bar ν$ is generated through the $t$-channel exchange. We focus on a scenario with a minimal set of Yukawa couplings that can address a semitauonic puzzle and show that its resolution puts a nontrivial bound on the product of the scalar couplings to $\bar τb$ and $\bar c ν$. We also derive additional constraints posed by $Z \to b\bar b$, muon magnetic moment, lepton flavor violating decays $μ\to e γ$, $τ\to μγ$, $τ\to e γ$, and $τ$ electric dipole moment. The minimal set of Yukawa couplings is not only compatible with the mass generation in an SU(5) unification framework, a natural environment for colored scalars, but specifies all matter mixing parameters except for one angle in the up-type quark sector. We accordingly spell out predictions for the proton decay signatures through gauge boson exchange and show that $p \rightarrow π^0 e^+$ is suppressed with respect to $p \rightarrow K^+ \barν$ and even $p \rightarrow K^0 e^+$ in some parts of available parameter space. Impact of the colored scalar embedding in 45-dimensional representation of SU(5) on low-energy phenomenology is also presented. Finally, we make predictions for rare top and charm decays where presence of this scalar can be tested independently.

Resonance catalyzed CP asymmetries in D -> P l+ l-

Recently observed increase of direct CP asymmetry in charm meson nonleptonic decays is difficult to explain within the SM. If this effect is induced by new physics, this might be investigated in other charm processes. We propose to investigate new CP violating effects in rare decays $D \to P \ell^+ \ell^-$, which arise due to the interference of resonant part of the long distance contribution and the new physics affected short distance contribution. Performing a model independent analysis, we identify as appropriate observables the differential direct CP asymmetry and partial decay width CP asymmetry. We find that in the most promising decays $D^+ \to π^+ \ell^+ \ell^-$ and $D_s^+ \to K^+ \ell^+ \ell^-$ the "peak-symmetric" and "peak-antisymmetric" CP asymmetries are strong phase dependent and can be of the order 1% and 10%, respectively.

Discerning New Physics in Top-Antitop Production using Top Spin Observables at Hadron Colliders

Copious production of top-antitop quark pairs at hadron colliders has enabled various probes into the properties and interactions of top quarks. Among the various presently measured observables, the forward-backward asymmetry (FBA) in t tbar production measured at the Tevatron significantly deviates from the standard model predictions, and many models of new physics have been invented to explain the puzzle. We consider the consistency of the simplified single-resonance models containing a color octet axial-vector ("axigluon"), color triplet or sextet weak singlet scalars, weak isodoublet scalar, flavor-changing neutral Z', or charged W' vector boson with existing t tbar production measurements. Among the considered models only an axigluon can reproduce all Tevatron observables, without being in severe tension with the recent LHC results on t tbar production cross section, charge asymmetry and top-spin correlations. The LHC charge asymmetry measurements exclude the W' and Z' explanations of the Tevatron FBA anomaly. On the other hand, all scalar models predict notable deviations in several top spin observables, and the recent top spin correlation measurement using the "helicity" spin quantization axis by ATLAS already provides a significant constraint on possible explanations of the Tevatron FBA anomaly. Future precise measurements of top spin correlations and especially top polarization could differentiate between scalar t(u)-channel models, while they are less sensitive to pure axigluon contributions.

Heavy and light scalar leptoquarks in proton decay

We list scalar leptoquarks that mediate proton decay via renormalizable couplings to the Standard Model fermions. We employ a general basis of baryon number violating operators to parameterize contributions of each leptoquark towards proton decay. This then sets the stage for investigation of bounds on the leptoquark couplings to fermions with respect to the most current Super Kamiokande results on proton stability. We quantify if, and when, it is necessary to have leptoquark masses close to a scale of grand unification in the realistic SU(5) and flipped SU(5) frameworks. The most and the least conservative lower bounds on the leptoquark masses are then presented. We furthermore single out a leptoquark without phenomenologically dangerous tree-level exchanges that might explain discrepancy of the forward-backward asymmetries in $t \bar t$ production observed at Tevatron, if relatively light. The same state could also play significant role in explaining muon anomalous magnetic moment. We identify contributions of this leptoquark to dimension-six operators, mediated through a box diagram, and tree-level dimension-nine operators, that would destabilize proton if sizable leptoquark and diquark couplings were to be simultaneously present.

Higgs Uncovering Light Scalar Remnants of High Scale Matter Unification

We consider the impact of colored scalars that can couple directly to matter fields on the recently measured h to gamma gamma excess. Among all possible candidates only scalar states transforming as (8, 2,1/2) and (6,3,1/3) under the Standard Model gauge group can individually accommodate the excess and remain in agreement with all available data. Current experimental constraints require such colored states to have an order one coupling to the Standard Model Higgs and a mass below 300 GeV. We use the best fit values to predict the correlated effect in h to Z gamma and di-Higgs production. We furthermore discuss where and how these states appear in extensions of the Standard Model with primary focus on scenarios of matter unification. We revisit two simple SU(5) setups to show that these two full-fledged models not only accommodate a light color octet state but correlate its mass with observable partial proton decay lifetimes.

On the B to D* tau nu Sensitivity to New Physics

B physics has played a prominent role in investigations of new physics effects at low-energies. Presently, the largest discrepancy between a standard model prediction and experimental measurements appears in the branching ratio of the charged current mediated B to tau nu decay, where the large tau mass lifts the helicity suppression arising in leptonic B decays. Less significant systematic deviations are also observed in the semileptonic B to D(*) tau nu rates. Due to the rich spin structure of the final state, the decay mode B to D* tau nu offers a number of tests of such possible standard model deviations. We investigate the most general set of lowest dimensional effective operators leading to helicity suppressed modifications of b to c (semi)leptonic transitions. We explore such contributions to the B to D* tau nu decay amplitudes by determining the differential decay rate, longitudinal D* polarization fraction, D* - tau opening angle asymmetry and the tau helicity asymmetry. We identify the size of possible new physics contributions constrained by the present B to D(*) tau nu rate measurements and find significant modifications are still possible in all of them. In particular, the opening angle asymmetry can be shifted by almost 30%, relative to the standard model prediction, while the tau helicity asymmetry can still deviate by as much as 80%.

Interplay of t --> b W Decay and B_q Meson Mixing in Minimal Flavor Violating Models

Precise measurements of the top quark decay properties at hadron colliders offer interesting new possibilities of testing the standard model. At the same time, recent intriguing experimental results concerning CP violation in the B_d and B_s systems have stimulated many studies of physics beyond the standard model. We investigate anomalous t W d_j interactions as a possible source of new effects in B_{d,s} - bar B_{d,s} oscillations within a model independent approach based on the assumptions of Minimal Flavor Violation. After matching our effective operators onto the low-energy effective Lagrangian describing B_{d,s} meson mixing and evolving it down to the B-mass scale, we extract the preferred ranges of the anomalous t W d_j interactions at the weak scale. These values are then compared to previously considered constraints coming from the rare radiative B --> X_s gamma decay. Finally, we reconsider the associated effects in the t --> b W decays and find that the W helicity fractions F_{L,+} can deviate by as much as 15%, 30% from their standard model values, respectively. The deviations in F_L in particular, can reach the level of expected precision measurements at the LHC.

Limits on scalar leptoquark interactions and consequences for GUTs

A colored weak singlet scalar state with hypercharge 4/3 is one of the possible candidates for the explanation of the unexpectedly large forward-backward asymmetry in t tbar production as measured by the CDF and D0 experiments. We investigate the role of this state in a plethora of flavor changing neutral current processes and precision observables of down-quarks and charged leptons. Our analysis includes tree- and loop-level mediated observables in the K and B systems, the charged lepton sector, as well as the Z to b bbar decay width. We perform a global fit of the relevant scalar couplings. This approach can explain the (g-2)_mu anomaly while tensions among the CP violating observables in the quark sector, most notably the nonstandard CP phase (and width difference) in the Bs system cannot be fully relaxed. The results are interpreted in a class of grand unified models which allow for a light colored scalar with a mass below 1TeV. We find that the renormalizable SU(5) scenario is not compatible with our global fit, while in the SO(10) case the viability requires the presence of both the 126- and 120-dimensional representations.

Probing anomalous tWb interactions with rare B decays

Precision studies of top quark properties are currently underway at the LHC and Tevatron colliders with the prospect of probing anomalous t-W -b interactions. In the mean time, recent experimental results for the B_{d,s} - \bar{B}_{d,s} oscillation observables, the branching ratio B_s->μ^+μ^-, as well as the forward - backward asymmetry in B->K\starl^+l^-, accompanied by the accurate theoretical predictions for the relevant observables obtained within the SM motivate a combined study of these observables in the presence of anomalous t - W - b vertices. We investigate contributions of such anomalous couplings to the B->X_s l^+l^- decay mode, and combining them with the modifications of the B_{d,s} - \bar{B}_d,s, B->X_sγ observables, we determine indirect bounds on the real and imaginary parts of the anomalous t - W - b interactions. We find these to be mostly superior to present direct constraints coming from top decay and production measurements at the LHC and Tevatron. Finally, we predict the allowed effects in the branching ratios of the B_s->μ^+μ^- and B->K^{(*)}ν\barν, as well as the forward-backward asymmetry in B->K^*l^+l^-. We find that improved knowledge of these observables in the future could further constrain some of the anomalous tWb interactions.

Scalar diquark in t tbar production and constraints on Yukawa sector of grand unified theories

Flavor Changing Neutral Coupling Mediated Radiative Top Quark Decays at Next-to-Leading Order in QCD

We compute the branching ratios for the rare top quark decays t to c gamma and t to c Z mediated by effective flavor changing neutral couplings at the next-to-leading order in QCD including the effects due to operator mixing. After re-suming contributions of order [alpha_s log (Lambda / m_t)]^n, where Lambda is the scale at which the effective operators are generated, at leading log level using renormalization group methods, we compute finite matrix element corrections and study the effects of experimental kinematic cuts on the extracted branching ratios. We find that the t to c gamma decay can be used to probe also the effective operators mediating t to c g processes, since these can naturaly contribute 10% or more to the radiative decay. Conversely, any experimental signal of t to c g would indicate a natural lower bound on t to cZ, gamma.

Light Colored Scalar as Messenger of Up-Quark Flavor Dynamics in Grand Unified Theories

The measured forward-backward asymmetry in the t tbar production at the Tevatron might be explained by the additional exchange of a colored weak singlet scalar. Such state appears in some of the grand unified theories and its interactions with the up-quarks are purely antisymmetric in flavor space. We systematically investigate the resulting impact on charm and top quark physics. The constraints on the relevant Yukawa couplings come from the experimentally measured observables related to D0--D0bar oscillations, as well as di-jet and single top production measurements at the Tevatron. After fully constraining the relevant Yukawa couplings, we predict possible signatures of this model in rare top quark decays. In a class of grand unified models we demonstrate how the obtained information enables to constrain the Yukawa couplings of the up-quarks at very high energy scale.

Light colored scalars from grand unification and the forward-backward asymmetry in top quark pair production

The experimental results on the t bar t production cross section at the Tevatron are well described by the QCD contributions within the standard model, while the recent measurement of the forward-backward asymmetry cannot be accounted for within this framework. We consider light colored scalars appearing in a particular SU(5) GUT model within the 45-dimensional Higgs representation. A virtue of the model is that it connects the presence of a light colored SU(2) singlet (Delta_6) and a color octet weak doublet (Delta_1) with bounds on the proton lifetime, which constrain the parameter space of both scalars. We find that both the t bar t production cross section and the forward-backward asymmetry can be accommodated simultaneously within this model. The experimental results prefer a region for the mass of Delta_6 around 400 GeV, while Delta_1 is then constrained to have a mass around the TeV scale as well. We analyze possible experimental signatures and find that Delta_6 associated top production could be probed in the t bar t + jets final states at Tevatron and the LHC.

New physics in t-> b W decay at next-to-leading order in QCD

We consider contributions of non-standard tbW effective operators to the decay of an unpolarized top quark into a bottom quark and a W gauge boson at next-to-leading order in QCD. We find that the dipole operator O_{LR} contribution to the transverse-plus W helicity fraction F_+ is significantly enhanced compared to the leading order result at non-vanishing bottom quark mass. Nonetheless, presently the most sensitive observable to direct O_{LR} contributions is the longitudinal W helicity fraction F_L. In particular, the most recent CDF measurement of F_L already provides the most stringent upper bound on O_{LR} contributions, even when compared with indirect bounds from the rare decay B -> X_s gamma.

QCD Corrections to Flavor Changing Neutral Coupling Mediated Rare Top Quark Decays

Recently we have presented an analysis of flavor changing neutral coupling mediated radiative top quark decays at next-to-leading order in QCD. In the present paper we provide the details of the calculation of QCD corrections to t-> q gamma and t-> q Z decays within the effective theory approach including operator mixing. In particular, we calculate virtual matrix element corrections and the corresponding bremsstrahlung contributions. In the case of t-> q gamma we study the effects of kinematic cuts on the extracted branching ratios. Analytical formulae are given at all stages of the calculation. We find that the t-> q gamma decay can be used to probe also the effective operators mediating t-> q g processes, since these can naturally contribute 10% or more to the radiative decay, given typical experimental cuts on the decay kinematics at hadron colliders. Conversely, we argue that any positive experimental signal of the t-> q g process would indicate a natural lower bound on t-> q gamma decay rate.

Chiral behavior of the B(s,d)-Bbar(s,d) mixing amplitude in the Standard Model and beyond

We compute the chiral logarithmic corrections to the Bd and Bs mixing amplitudes in the Standard Model and beyond. We then investigate the impact of the inclusion of the lowest-lying scalar heavy-light states to the decay constants and bag-parameters and show that this does not modify the pion chiral logarithms, but it does produce corrections which are competitive in size with the K- and eta-meson chiral logarithms. This conclusion is highly relevant to the lattice studies since the pion chiral logarithms represent the most important effect in guiding the chiral extrapolations of the lattice data for these quantities. Also important is to stress that the pion chiral logarithmic corrections are useful in guiding those extrapolations as long as Mpi << Delta, where Delta is the mass gap between the scalar and pseudoscalar heavy-light mesons.

Color suppressed contributions to the decay modes B_{d,s} -> D_{s,d} D_{s,d}, B_{d,s} -> D_{s,d} D^*_{s,d}, and B_{d,s} -> D^*_{s,d} D^*_{s,d}

The amplitudes for decays of the type $B_{d,s} \to D_{s,d} D_{s,d}$, have no factorizable contributions, while $B_{d,s} \to D_{s,d} D^*_{s,d}$, and $B_{d,s} \to D^*_{s,d} D^*_{s,d}$ have relatively small factorizable contributions through the annihilation mechanism. The dominant contributions to the decay amplitudes arise from chiral loop contributions and tree level amplitudes which can be obtained in terms of soft gluon emissions forming a gluon condensate. We predict that the branching ratios for the processes $\bar B^0_d \to D_s^+ D_s^-$, $\bar B^0_d \to D_s^{+*} D_s^- $ and $\bar B^0_d \to D_s^+ D_s^{-*}$ are all of order $(2- 3) \times 10^{-4}$, while $\bar B^0_s \to D_d^+ D_d^-$, $\bar B^0_s \to D_d^{+*} D_d^- $ and $\bar B^0_s \to D_d^+ D_d^{-*}$ are of order $(4- 7) \times 10^{-3}$. We obtain branching ratios for two $D^*$'s in the final state of order two times bigger.

CP violation in the partial width asymmetries for B^- -> pi^+ pi^- K^- and B^- -> K^+ K^- K^- decays

We investigate a possibility of observing CP asymmetries in the partial widths for the decays B^- -> pi^+ pi^- K^- and B^- -> K^+ K^- K^- produced by the interference of the non-resonant decay amplitude with the resonant amplitudes. The resonant states which subsequently decay into pi^+ pi^- and K^+ K^- or K^- pi^+ are charmonium c(bar) c states with J^P = 0^+, 1^-, 1^+ or the phi(1020) meson. We find that the largest partial width asymmetry comes from the chi_c0 resonance, while the resonances K^*_0(1430) and psi(2S) give a partial width asymmetry of the order 10%.

The hidden strangeness mechanism in Ds^+ -> omega pi^+ and Ds^+ -> rho^0 pi^+ decays

We study possible contributions to the Ds^+ -> omega pi^+ and Ds^+ -> rho^0 pi^+ decay amplitudes. The Ds^+ -> omega pi^+ decay amplitude vanishes when the naive factorization is used, while the Ds^+ -> rho^0 pi^+ decay amplitude arises due to the annihilation contribution. We find that amplitudes for both decays might be a result of the internal K, K^* exchange. The Ds^+ -> omega pi^+ amplitude might obtain additional contribution from Ds^+ -> rho^0 eta (eta') re-scattering. The low experimental bound on the Ds^+ -> rho^0 pi^+ rate can be understood as a result of combination of the pi(1300) pole dominated annihilation contribution and the K,K^* internal exchanges. The calculated branching fractions for Ds^+ -> omega pi^+ and Ds^+ -> rho^0 pi^+ are in agreement with the current experimental results.
