Honeycomb structures in magnetic fields

We consider reduced-dimensionality models of honeycomb lattices in magnetic fields and report results about the spectrum, the density of states, self-similarity, and metal/insulator transitions under disorder. We perform a spectral analysis by which we discover a fractal Cantor spectrum for irrational magnetic flux through a honeycomb, prove the existence of zero energy Dirac cones for each rational flux, obtain an explicit expansion of the density of states near the conical points, and show the existence of mobility edges under Anderson-type disorder. Our results give a precise description of de Haas-van Alphen and Quantum Hall effects, and provide quantitative estimates on transport properties. In particular, our findings explain experimentally observed asymmetry phenomena by going beyond the perfect cone approximation.

$L^2$-reducibility and localization for quasiperiodic operators

We give a simple argument that if a quasiperiodic multi-frequency Schrödinger cocycle is reducible to a constant rotation for almost all energies with respect to the density of states measure, then the spectrum of the dual operator is purely point for Lebesgue almost all values of the ergodic parameter $θ$. The result holds in the $L^2$ setting provided, in addition, that the conjugation preserves the fibered rotation number. Corollaries include localization for (long-range) 1D analytic potentials with dual ac spectrum and Diophantine frequency as well as a new result on multidimensional localization.

All couplings localization for quasiperiodic operators with Lipschitz monotone potentials

We establish Anderson localization for quasiperiodic operator families of the form $$ (H(x)ψ)(m)=ψ(m+1)+ψ(m-1)+λv(x+mα)ψ(m) $$ for all $λ>0$ and all Diophantine $α$, provided that $v$ is a $1$-periodic function satisfying a Lipschitz monotonicity condition on $[0,1)$. The localization is uniform on any energy interval on which Lyapunov exponent is bounded from below.

Quantitative continuity of singular continuous spectral measures and arithmetic criteria for quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators

We introduce a notion of $β$-almost periodicity and prove quantitative lower spectral/quantum dynamical bounds for general bounded $β$-almost periodic potentials. Applications include a sharp arithmetic criterion of full spectral dimensionality for analytic quasiperiodic Schrödinger operators in the positive Lyapunov exponent regime and arithmetic criteria for families with zero Lyapunov exponents, with applications to Sturmian potentials and the critical almost Mathieu operator.

Holder continuity of absolutely continuous spectral measures for one-frequency Schrodinger operators

We establish sharp results on the modulus of continuity of the distribution of the spectral measure for one-frequency Schrodinger operators with Diophantine frequencies in the region of absolutely continuous spectrum. More precisely, we establish 1/2-Holder continuity near almost reducible energies (an essential support of absolutely continuous spectrum). For non-perturbatively small potentials (and for the almost Mathieu operator with subcritical coupling), our results apply for all energies.

Upper bounds on wavepacket spreading for random Jacobi matrices

A method is presented for proving upper bounds on the moments of the position operator when the dynamics of quantum wavepackets is governed by a random (possibly correlated) Jacobi matrix. As an application, one obtains sharp upper bounds on the diffusion exponents for random polymer models, coinciding with the lower bounds obtained in a prior work. The second application is an elementary argument (not using multiscale analysis or the Aizenman-Molchanov method) showing that under the condition of uniformly positive Lyapunov exponents, the moments of the position operator grow at most logarithmically in time.
