One-loop soft anomalous dimension matrices for $t\bar t j$ hadroproduction

We calculate the one-loop corrections to the soft anomalous dimension matrices for the production of a top-antitop quark pair in association with a jet at hadron colliders. This is a step forward towards implementing a procedure for the resummation of soft-gluon emission logarithms for the $t\bar{t}j + X$ hadroproduction process, that will enable the improvement of the accuracy of the $t\bar{t} j + X$ cross sections, beyond the current degree of knowledge. The latter, so far, has reached the next-to-leading order (NLO) level, complemented by the accuracy of the Shower Monte Carlo approaches used in matching the NLO computations to parton showers (PS) and by merging with matrix elements with a different number of light jets.

Phenomenology of $t\bar{t}j + X$ production at the LHC

We present phenomenological results for $t\bar{t}j + X$ production at the Large Hadron Collider, of interest for designing forthcoming experimental analyses of this process. We focus on those cases where the $t\bar{t}j + X$ process is considered as a signal. We discuss present theoretical uncertainties and the dependence on relevant input parameters entering the computation. For the ${\cal R}$ distribution, which depends on the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}j$-system, we present reference predictions in the on-shell, $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$ and MSR top-quark mass renormalization schemes, applying the latter scheme to this process for the first time. Our conclusions are particularly interesting for those analyses aiming at extracting the top-quark mass from cross-section measurements.

Renormalization of non-singlet quark operator matrix elements for deep-inelastic scattering

We introduce a new method for calculating the mixing matrix for non-singlet quark operators including total derivatives, based solely on their renormalization structure in the chiral limit. As input, the method requires the well-known forward anomalous dimensions, which determine the evolution of parton distribution functions, and a calculation of the matrix elements of operators without total derivatives. Assuming a large number of quark flavors $n_f$, we are able to calculate the mixing matrix to fifth order in the strong coupling $α_s$ in the $\overline{\mbox{MS}}$-scheme.

Top-quark mass extraction from $t\bar{t}j +X$ events at the LHC: theory predictions

Past work has proven the possibility of extracting the top-quark mass, one of the fundamental parameters of the Standard Model, from the comparison of theory predictions and experimental measurements of differential cross-sections for $t\bar{t} j~+~X$ hadroproduction. Various experimental analyses in this respect have already been performed, and new ones are in preparation on the basis of the latest data from $pp$ collisions collected at the Large Hadron Collider. We have produced and made public a comprehensive set of theoretical predictions for the relevant differential distributions, ready to be used for presently ongoing and forthcoming experimental analyses. We investigate the role of different theoretical inputs, in particular the factorization and renormalization scales, PDFs and top-quark mass renormalization schemes, and we quantify the uncertainties related to different choices for these inputs, providing recommendations.

Uncertainties on the theoretical input for $t\bar{t}j$ experimental analyses at the LHC

The precise measurement of the top-quark mass constitutes one of the main goals of the LHC top-quark physics program. One possibility to extract this parameter uses the $ρ_{\mathrm{s}}$ distribution, which depends on the invariant mass of the $t\bar{t}j$ system. To fully take advantage of the experimental accuracy achievable in measuring top quark production cross sections at the LHC, the theory uncertainties need to be well under control. We present a study of the effect of varying the input parameters of the theoretical calculation on the predicted $ρ_{\mathrm{s}}$ distribution. Thereby we studied the influence of the $R$ parameter in the jet reconstruction procedure, as well as the effect of various renormalization and factorization scale definitions and different PDF sets. A behaviour similar to the one presented here for the $ρ_{\mathrm{s}}$-distribution was also found for other differential distributions.

Cross-Sections for $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{H}$ production with the Top Quark $\overline{\text{MS}}$ Mass

We study the impact of the top quark mass renormalized in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme on the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{H}$ production cross-sections as an alternative to theory predictions with the conventionally used pole mass scheme. The differential cross-sections at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD with stable top quarks show a moderate decrease in scale uncertainties for the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ mass renormalization scheme compared to the on-shell one. The shape of the differential distributions is not affected much, the largest differences being observed in the invariant mass distributions of the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}$ and the $\text{t}\bar{\text{t}}\text{H}$ systems.

Hypergeometric Functions and Feynman Diagrams

The relationship between Feynman diagrams and hypergeometric functions is discussed. Special attention is devoted to existing techniques for the construction of the $ε$-expansion. As an example, we present a detailed discussion of the construction of the epsilon-expansion of the Appell function $F_3$ around rational values of parameters via an iterative solution of differential equations. As a by-product, we have found that the one-loop massless pentagon diagram in dimension $d=3-2ε$ is not expressible in terms of multiple polylogarithms. Another interesting example is the Puiseux-type solution involving a differential operator generated by a hypergeometric function of three variables. The holonomic properties of the $F_N$ hypergeometric functions are briefly discussed.

Soft corrections to inclusive deep-inelastic scattering at four loops and beyond

We study the threshold corrections for inclusive deep-inelastic scattering (DIS) and their all-order resummation. Using recent results for the QCD form factor, related anomalous dimensions and Mellin moments of DIS structure functions at four loops we derive the complete soft and collinear contributions to the DIS Wilson coefficients at four loops. For a general $SU(n_c)$ gauge group the results are exact in the large-$n_c$ approximation and for QCD with $n_c=3$ we present precise approximations. We extend the threshold resummation exponent $G^N$ in Mellin-$N$ space to the fifth logarithmic (N$^4$LL) order collecting the terms $α_{\rm s}^{\,3} (α_{\rm s} \ln N)^n$ to all orders in the strong coupling constant $α_{\rm s}$. We study the numerical effect of the N$^4$LL corrections using both the fully exponentiated form and the expansion of the coefficient function in towers of logarithms. As a byproduct, we derive a numerical result for the complete pole structure of the QCD form factor in the parameter of dimensional regularization $\varepsilon$ at four loops.

Calibration of the Top-Quark Monte-Carlo Mass

We present a method to establish experimentally the relation between the top-quark mass $m_t^{MC}$ as implemented in Monte-Carlo generators and the Lagrangian mass parameter $m_t$ in a theoretically well-defined renormalization scheme. We propose a simultaneous fit of $m_t^{MC}$ and an observable sensitive to $m_t$, which does not rely on any prior assumptions about the relation between $m_t$ and $m_t^{MC}$. The measured observable is independent of $m_t^{MC}$ and can be used subsequently for a determination of $m_t$. The analysis strategy is illustrated with examples for the extraction of $m_t$ from inclusive and differential cross sections for hadro-production of top-quarks.

Single-top production in the s-channel and the top-quark mass

We use a fixed-order expansion of resummed soft-gluon corrections to determine an approximate NNLO formula for the partonic cross section of single-top production in the $s$-channel. This formula is implemented in the program Hathor for the numerical evaluation of hadronic cross sections. With the resulting code, we perform a fit of the top-quark mass to Tevatron cross section data. Results for $m_t$ are given in the pole-mass scheme and in the $\overline{\mathrm{MS}}$ scheme.

A facility to Search for Hidden Particles at the CERN SPS: the SHiP physics case

This paper describes the physics case for a new fixed target facility at CERN SPS. The SHiP (Search for Hidden Particles) experiment is intended to hunt for new physics in the largely unexplored domain of very weakly interacting particles with masses below the Fermi scale, inaccessible to the LHC experiments, and to study tau neutrino physics. The same proton beam setup can be used later to look for decays of tau-leptons with lepton flavour number non-conservation, $τ\to 3μ$ and to search for weakly-interacting sub-GeV dark matter candidates. We discuss the evidence for physics beyond the Standard Model and describe interactions between new particles and four different portals - scalars, vectors, fermions or axion-like particles. We discuss motivations for different models, manifesting themselves via these interactions, and how they can be probed with the SHiP experiment and present several case studies. The prospects to search for relatively light SUSY and composite particles at SHiP are also discussed. We demonstrate that the SHiP experiment has a unique potential to discover new physics and can directly probe a number of solutions of beyond the Standard Model puzzles, such as neutrino masses, baryon asymmetry of the Universe, dark matter, and inflation

Impact of heavy-flavour production cross sections measured by the LHCb experiment on parton distribution functions at low x

The impact of recent measurements of heavy-flavour production in deep inelastic $ep$ scattering and in $pp$ collisions on parton distribution functions is studied in a QCD analysis in the fixed-flavour number scheme at next-to-leading order. Differential cross sections of charm- and beauty-hadron production measured by LHCb are used together with inclusive and heavy-flavour production cross sections in deep inelastic scattering at HERA. The heavy-flavour data of the LHCb experiment impose additional constraints on the gluon and the sea-quark distributions at low partonic fractions $x$ of the proton momentum, down to $x \sim 5 \times 10^{-6}$. This kinematic range is currently not covered by other experimental data in perturbative QCD fits.

Top-quark pair production at hadron colliders: differential cross section and phenomenological applications with DiffTop

The results of phenomenological studies of top-quark pair production in proton-proton collisions are presented. Differential cross sections are calculated in perturbative QCD at approximate next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ by using methods of threshold resummation beyond the leading logarithmic accuracy. Predictions for the single-particle inclusive kinematics are presented for transverse momentum and rapidity distributions of final-state top quarks. Uncertainties related to the description of proton structure, top-quark mass and strong coupling constant are investigated in detail. The results are compared to the recent measurements by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations at the LHC at the center of mass energy of 7 TeV. The calculation presented here is implemented in the computer code \textsc{Difftop} and can be applied to the general case of heavy-quark pair production at hadron-hadron colliders. For the first time, a fit of parton distribution functions at NNLO is performed by using the differential cross sections of top-quark pair production together with other data sets. The impact of the top-pair production on the precision of the gluon distribution at high scales is illustrated.

Differential cross sections for top pair production at the LHC

We present results of phenomenological studies for top-quark pair production at the LHC at the center of mass energy $\sqrt{S} = 7$ TeV. The transverse momentum and rapidity distributions for final-state top quarks are calculated in perturbative QCD at approximate next-to-next-to-leading order ${\cal O}(α_s^4)$ by using methods of threshold resummation beyond the leading logarithmic accuracy. The theoretical predictions are obtained by using the computer code \textsc{DiffTop} and are compared to recent measurements by the ATLAS and CMS collaborations. \textsc{Difftop} can be employed in the general case of heavy-quark pair production at hadron-hadron colliders and provides a basis for applications in QCD analyses for parton distribution functions determination.

HYPERDIRE: HYPERgeometric functions DIfferential REduction: MATHEMATICA based packages for differential reduction of generalized hypergeometric functions: $F_D$ and $F_S$ Horn-type hypergeometric functions of three variables

HYPERDIRE is a project devoted to the creation of a set of Mathematica based programs for the differential reduction of hypergeometric functions. The current version includes two parts: the first one, FdFunction, for manipulations with Appell hypergeometric functions $F_D$ of $r$ variables; and the second one, FsFunction, for manipulations with Lauricella-Saran hypergeometric functions $F_S$ of three variables. Both functions are related with one-loop Feynman diagrams. The published version includes also Chapter 5 with two theorems about structure of coefficients of epsilon-expansion of the Horn-type hypergeometric functions. As illustration, the first three coefficients of epsilon-expansion for the Appell hypergeometric function FD of r-variables are explicitly evaluated.

QCD Corrections to Semi-Inclusive Hadron Production in Electron-Positron Annihilation at Two Loops

We report on the analytic calculation of the second-order QCD corrections to semi-inclusive hadron production in electron-positron annihilation. The calculation of the single-particle inclusive cross-section in time-like kinematics is performed in Mellin N-space and uses an algorithmic evaluation of inclusive phase-space integrals, based on the unitarity cutting rules and integration-by-parts. We obtain splitting functions and coefficient functions up to second order in the strong coupling alpha_s. Our results are in agreement with earlier calculations in the literature by Rijken and van Neerven.

A new observable to measure the top-quark mass at hadron colliders

A new method to measure the top-quark mass in high energetic hadron collisions is presented. We use theoretical predictions calculated at next-to-leading order accuracy in quantum chromodynamics to study the (normalized) differential distribution of the \ttbaronejet cross section with respect to its invariant mass $\sqrt{\sttj}$. The sensitivity of the method to the top-quark mass together with the impact of various theoretical and experimental uncertainties has been investigated and quantified. The new method allows for a complementary measurement of the top-quark mass parameter and has a high potential to become competitive in precision with respect to established approaches. Furthermore we emphasize that in the proposed method the mass parameter is uniquely defined through one-loop renormalization.

Differential distributions for top-quark hadro-production with a running mass

We take a look at how the differential distributions for top-quark production are affected by changing to the running mass scheme. Specifically we consider the transverse momentum, rapidity and pair-invariant mass distributions at NLO for the top-quark mass in the MSbar scheme. It is found that, similar to the total cross section, the perturbative expansion converges faster and the scale dependence improves using the mass in the MSbar scheme as opposed to the on-shell scheme. We also update the analysis for the total cross section using the now available full NNLO contribution.

Phenomenology of threshold corrections for inclusive jet production at hadron colliders

We study one-jet inclusive hadro-production and compute the QCD threshold corrections for large transverse momentum of the jet in the soft-gluon resummation formalism at next-to-leading logarithmic accuracy. We use the resummed result to generate approximate QCD corrections at next-to-next-to leading order, compare with results in the literature and present rapidity integrated distributions of the jet's transverse momentum for Tevatron and LHC. For the threshold approximation we investigate its kinematical range of validity as well as its dependence on the jet's cone size and kinematics.

Top-quark production at the LHC: differential cross section and phenomenological applications

We discuss top-quark pair production at hadron colliders and review available calculations of differential top-pair production cross section in perturbative QCD at approximate next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) within the threshold resummation formalism. These calculations are implemented into an open source program under development. We present phenomenological studies at the LHC that include transverse momentum and rapidity distribution of the top quarks at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV. Preliminary results obtained with this program are in very good agreement with the recent LHC measurements.

Hadronic top-quark pair-production with one jet and parton showering

We present a calculation of heavy-flavor production in hadronic collisions in association with one jet matched to parton shower Monte Carlo programs at next-to-leading order in perturbative QCD. Top-quark decays are included and spin correlations in the decay products are taken into account. The calculation builds on existing results for the radiative corrections to heavy-quark plus one jet production and uses the POWHEG BOX for the interface to the parton shower programs PYTHIA or HERWIG. A broad phenomenological study for the Large Hadron Collider and the Tevatron is presented. In particular we study---as one important sample application---the impact of the parton shower on the top-quark charge asymmetry.

QCD threshold corrections for gluino pair production at hadron colliders

We present the complete threshold enhanced predictions in QCD for the total cross section of gluino pair production at hadron colliders at next-to-next-to-leading order. Thanks to the computation of the required one-loop hard matching coefficients our results are accurate to the next-to-next-to-leading logarithm. In a brief phenomenological study we provide predictions for the total hadronic cross sections at the LHC and we discuss the uncertainties arising from scale variations and the parton distribution functions.

Vector boson fusion at NNLO in QCD: SM Higgs and beyond

Weak vector boson fusion provides a unique channel to directly probe the mechanism of electroweak symmetry breaking at hadron colliders. We present a method that allows to calculate total cross sections to next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD for an arbitrary V* V* -> X process, the so-called structure function approach. By discussing the case of Higgs production in detail, we estimate several classes of previously neglected contributions and we argue that such method is accurate at a precision level well above the typical residual scale and PDF uncertainties at NNLO. Predictions for cross sections at the Tevatron and the LHC are presented for a variety of cases: the Standard Model Higgs (including anomalous couplings), neutral and charged scalars in extended Higgs sectors and (fermiophobic) vector resonance production. Further results can be easily obtained through the public use of the VBF@NNLO code.

The PDF4LHC Working Group Interim Report

This document is intended as a study of benchmark cross sections at the LHC (at 7 TeV) at NLO using modern parton distribution functions currently available from the 6 PDF fitting groups that have participated in this exercise. It also contains a succinct user guide to the computation of PDFs, uncertainties and correlations using available PDF sets. A companion note, also submitted to the archive, provides an interim summary of the current recommendations of the PDF4LHC working group for the use of parton distribution functions and of PDF uncertainties at the LHC, for cross section and cross section uncertainty calculations.

Charged Higgs production via vector-boson fusion at NNLO in QCD

We present the total cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong coupling for single and double charged Higgs production via weak boson fusion. Results are obtained via the structure function approach, which builds upon the approximate, though very accurate, factorization of the QCD corrections between the two quark lines. The theoretical uncertainty on the total cross sections at the LHC from higher order corrections and the parton distribution uncertainties are estimated at the 2% level each for a wide range of Higgs boson masses.

Higgs production at NNLO in QCD: the VBF channel

We present a phenomenological study for the production of the Higgs boson at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in QCD via the vector boson fusion (VBF) process. After a general discussion about the different production channels of the Higgs, we show results for hadron colliders like LHC and Tevatron in VBF. The theoretical predictions are obtained using the structure function approach. This approximation turns out to be more accurate than the precision to which the VBF Higgs production channel can be considered a well defined process by itself and the theoretical uncertainty are of the order of 1-2%. The uncertainties due to parton distributions are also discussed and are estimated to be at the same level.

We present the total cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading order (NNLO) in the strong coupling for Higgs production via weak boson fusion. Our results are obtained via the structure function approach, which builds upon the approximate, though very accurate, factorization of the QCD corrections between the two quark lines. The theoretical uncertainty on the total cross sections at the LHC from higher order corrections and the parton distribution uncertainties are estimated at the 2% level each for a wide range of Higgs boson masses.

Measuring the running Top quark mass

In this contribution we discuss conceptual issues of current mass measurements performed at the Tevatron. In addition we propose an alternative method which is theoretically much cleaner and to a large extend free from the problems encountered in current measurements. In detail we discuss the direct determination of the top-quark's running mass from the cross section measurements performed at the Tevatron.

Higher-order soft corrections to squark hadro-production

We present new predictions for the total cross section of squark pair-production at Tevatron and LHC through next-to-next-to-leading order within the Minimal Supersymmetric Standard Model. The results are based on the numerically dominant soft corrections. They are exact in all logarithmically enhanced terms near threshold, include the Coulomb corrections at two loops and exact scale dependence. We translate the increased total cross section at next-to-next-to-leading order into improved exclusion limits for squark masses and we investigate the scale dependence as well as the sensitivity on the parton luminosity.

$N=2$ Super-Weyl Symmetry, Super-Liouville Theory and Super-Riemannian Surfaces

The finite form of the $N=2$ super-Weyl transformations in the chiral and twisted-chiral irreducible formulations of the two-dimensional $N=2$ superfield supergravity are found in $N=2$ superspace. The super-Weyl anomaly of the $N=2$ extended fermionic string theory is computed in terms of the $N=2$ superfields, by using a short time expansion of the $N=2$ chiral heat kernel. The super-Weyl invariant $N=2$ superconformal structure is introduced, and a new definition of the $N=2$ super-Riemannian surfaces is proposed.
