Testing spatial curvature and anisotropic expansion on top of the $Λ$CDM model

We explore the possible advantages of extending the $Λ$CDM model by more realistic backgrounds compared to its spatially flat RW spacetime assumption, while preserving the underpinning physics; in particular, by simultaneously allowing non-zero spatial curvature and anisotropic expansion on top of it, viz., the An-$oΛ$CDM model. This is to test whether the latest data support spatial flatness and/or isotropic expansion, and, if not, to explore the roles of spatial curvature and expansion anisotropy (due to its stiff fluid-like behavior) in addressing some of the cosmological tensions. We first present the theoretical background and explicit mathematical construction of An-$oΛ$CDM; combining the simplest anisotropic generalizations of the RW spacetime, viz., the Bianchi type I, V, and IX spacetimes. Then we constrain this model and its particular cases, viz., An-$Λ$CDM, $oΛ$CDM, and $Λ$CDM, by using the data sets from different probes, viz., Planck CMB(+Lens), BAO, SnIa Pantheon, and CC data, and discuss the results. Ultimately, we conclude that, within the setup under consideration, (i) the data confirm the spatial flatness and isotropic expansion, though a very small amount of present-day expansion anisotropy cannot be excluded, e.g., $Ω_{\sigma0}\lesssim10^{-18}$ (95\% C.L.) for An-$Λ$CDM from CMB+Lens, (ii) the introduction of spatial curvature or anisotropic expansion, or both, on top $Λ$CDM does not offer a possible relaxation to the $H_0$ tension, and (iii) the introduction of anisotropic expansion neither affects the closed space prediction from CMB(+Lens) nor does it improve the drastically reduced value of $H_0$ led by the closed space. We discuss why it is important and indispensable to maintain the geometric generalization work program, especially in models that offer solutions to cosmological tensions. [abridged]

Cosmology Intertwined: A Review of the Particle Physics, Astrophysics, and Cosmology Associated with the Cosmological Tensions and Anomalies

In this paper we will list a few important goals that need to be addressed in the next decade, also taking into account the current discordances between the different cosmological probes, such as the disagreement in the value of the Hubble constant $H_0$, the $σ_8$--$S_8$ tension, and other less statistically significant anomalies. While these discordances can still be in part the result of systematic errors, their persistence after several years of accurate analysis strongly hints at cracks in the standard cosmological scenario and the necessity for new physics or generalisations beyond the standard model. In this paper, we focus on the $5.0\,σ$ tension between the {\it Planck} CMB estimate of the Hubble constant $H_0$ and the SH0ES collaboration measurements. After showing the $H_0$ evaluations made from different teams using different methods and geometric calibrations, we list a few interesting new physics models that could alleviate this tension and discuss how the next decade's experiments will be crucial. Moreover, we focus on the tension of the {\it Planck} CMB data with weak lensing measurements and redshift surveys, about the value of the matter energy density $Ω_m$, and the amplitude or rate of the growth of structure ($σ_8,fσ_8$). We list a few interesting models proposed for alleviating this tension, and we discuss the importance of trying to fit a full array of data with a single model and not just one parameter at a time. Additionally, we present a wide range of other less discussed anomalies at a statistical significance level lower than the $H_0$--$S_8$ tensions which may also constitute hints towards new physics, and we discuss possible generic theoretical approaches that can collectively explain the non-standard nature of these signals.[Abridged]

New tests of dark sector interactions from the full-shape galaxy power spectrum

We explore the role of redshift-space galaxy clustering data in constraining non-gravitational interactions between dark energy (DE) and dark matter (DM), for which state-of-the-art limits have so far been obtained from late-time background measurements. We use the joint likelihood for pre-reconstruction full-shape (FS) galaxy power spectrum and post-reconstruction Baryon Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements from the BOSS DR12 sample, alongside Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) data from \textit{Planck}: from this dataset combination we infer $H_0=68.02^{+0.49}_{-0.60}\,{\rm km}/{\rm s}/{\rm Mpc}$ and the 2$σ$ lower limit $ξ>-0.12$, among the strongest limits ever reported on the DM-DE coupling strength $ξ$ for the particular model considered. Contrary to what has been observed for the $Λ$CDM model and simple extensions thereof, we find that the CMB+FS combination returns tighter constraints compared to the CMB+BAO one, suggesting that there is valuable additional information contained in the broadband of the power spectrum. We test this finding by running additional CMB-free analyses and removing sound horizon information, and discuss the important role of the equality scale in setting constraints on DM-DE interactions. Our results reinforce the critical role played by redshift-space galaxy clustering measurements in the epoch of precision cosmology, particularly in relation to tests of non-minimal dark sector extensions of the $Λ$CDM model.

Reconstruction of the dark sectors' interaction: A model-independent inference and forecast from GW standard sirens

Interacting dark matter (DM) - dark energy (DE) models have been intensively investigated in the literature for their ability to fit various data sets as well as to explain some observational tensions persisting within the $Λ$CDM cosmology. In this work, we employ the Gaussian processes (GP) algorithm to perform a joint analysis by using the geometrical cosmological probes such as Cosmic chronometers, Supernova Type Ia, Baryon Acoustic Oscillations, and the H0LiCOW lenses sample to infer a reconstruction of the coupling function between the dark components in a general framework, where the DE can assume a dynamical character via its equation of state. In addition to the joint analysis with these data, we simulate a catalogue with standard siren events from binary neutron star mergers, within the sensitivity predicted by the Einstein Telescope, to reconstruct the dark sector coupling with more accuracy in a robust way. We find that the particular case, where $w = -1$ is fixed on the DE nature, has a statistical preference for an interaction in the dark sector at late times. In the general case, where $w(z)$ is analysed, we find no evidence for such dark coupling, and the predictions are compatible with the $Λ$CDM paradigm. When the mock events of the standard sirens are considered to improve the kernel in GP predictions, we find a preference for an interaction in the dark sector at late times.

Measurements of $H_0$ and reconstruction of the dark energy properties from a model-independent joint analysis

Gaussian processes (GP) provide an elegant and model-independent method for extracting cosmological information from the observational data. In this work, we employ GP to perform a joint analysis by using the geometrical cosmological probes such as Supernova Type Ia (SN), Cosmic chronometers (CC), Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO), and the H0LiCOW lenses sample to constrain the Hubble constant $H_0$, and reconstruct some properties of dark energy (DE), viz., the equation of state parameter $w$, the sound speed of DE perturbations $c^2_s$, and the ratio of DE density evolution $X = ρ_{\rm de}/ρ_{\rm de,0}$. From the joint analysis SN+CC+BAO+H0LiCOW, we find that $H_0$ is constrained at 1.1\% precision with $H_0 = 73.78 \pm 0.84$ km s$^{-1}$Mpc$^{-1}$, which is in agreement with SH0ES and H0LiCOW estimates, but in $\sim$6.2$σ$ tension with the current CMB measurements of $H_0$. With regard to the DE parameters, we find $c^2_s < 0$ at $\sim$2$σ$ at high $z$, and the possibility of $X$ to become negative for $z > 1.5$. We compare our results with the ones obtained in the literature, and discuss the consequences of our main results on the DE theoretical framework.

Software Estimations Risk in Pakistan Software Industry

Software and IT industry in Pakistan have seen a dramatic growth and success in past few years and is expected to get doubled by 2020, according to a research. Software development life cycle comprises of multiple phases, activities and techniques that can lead to successful projects, and software evaluation is one of the vital and important parts of that. Software estimation can alone be the reason of product success factor or the products failure factor. To estimate the right cost, effort and resources is an art. But it is also very important to include the risks that may arise in the in a software project which can affect your estimates. In this paper, we highlight how the risks in Pakistan Software Industry can affect the estimates and how to mitigate them.

Probing the interaction between dark matter and dark energy in the presence of massive neutrinos

We consider the possibility of an interaction in the dark sector in the presence of massive neutrinos, and study the observational constraints on three different scenarios of massive neutrinos using the most recent CMB anisotropy data in combination with type Ia supernovae, baryon acoustic oscillations, and Hubble parameter measurements. When a sterile neutrino is introduced in the interacting dark sector scenario in addition to the standard model prediction of neutrinos, we find that the coupling parameter, characterizing the interaction between dark matter and dark energy, is non-zero at 2$σ$ confidence level. The interaction model with sterile neutrino is also found to be a promising one to alleviate the current tension on Hubble constant. We do not find the evidence for a coupling in the dark sector when the possibility of a sterile neutrino is discarded.

Consistency of the nonflat $Λ$CDM model with the new result from BOSS

Using 137,562 quasars in the redshift range $2.1\leq z\leq3.5$ from the Data Release 11 (DR11) of the Baryon Oscillation Spectroscopic Survey (BOSS) of Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS)-III, the BOSS-SDSS collaboration estimated the expansion rate $H(z=2.34)=222\pm7$ km/s/Mpc of Universe, and reported that this value is in tension with the predictions of flat $Λ$CDM model at around 2.5$σ$ level. In this paper, we briefly describe some attempts made in the literature to relieve the tension, and show that the tension can naturally be alleviated in non-flat $Λ$CDM model with positive curvature. We also perform the observational consistency check by considering the constraints on the non-flat $Λ$CDM model from Planck,WP and BAO data. We find that the non-flat $Λ$CDM model constrained with Planck+WP data fits better to the line of sight measurement $H(z=2.34)=222\pm7$ km/s/Mpc, but only at the expense of still having a poor fit to the BAO transverse measurements.

Cosmology with hybrid expansion law: scalar field reconstruction of cosmic history and observational constraints

In this paper, we consider a simple form of expansion history of Universe referred to as the hybrid expansion law - a product of power-law and exponential type of functions. The ansatz by construction mimics the power-law and de Sitter cosmologies as special cases but also provides an elegant description of the transition from deceleration to cosmic acceleration. We point out the Brans-Dicke realization of the cosmic history under consideration. We construct potentials for quintessence, phantom and tachyon fields, which can give rise to the hybrid expansion law in general relativity. We investigate observational constraints on the model with hybrid expansion law applied to late time acceleration as well as to early universe a la nucleosynthesis.

Observational constraints on variable equation of state parameters of dark matter and dark energy after Planck

In this paper, we study a cosmological model in general relativity within the framework of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-time filled with ordinary matter (baryonic), radiation, dark matter and dark energy, where the latter two components are described by Chevallier-Polarski-Linder equation of state parameters. We utilize the observational data sets from SNLS3, BAO and Planck+WMAP9+WiggleZ measurements of matter power spectrum to constrain the model parameters. We find that the current observational data offer tight constraints on the equation of state parameter of dark matter. We consider the perturbations and study the behavior of dark matter by observing its effects on CMB and matter power spectra. We find that the current observational data favor the cold dark matter scenario with the cosmological constant type dark energy at the present epoch.

Probing kinematics and fate of the Universe with linearly time-varying deceleration parameter

The parametrizations $q=q_0+q_1 z$ and $q=q_0+q_1 (1-a/a_0)$ (Chevallier-Polarski-Linder parametrization) of deceleration parameter, which are linear in cosmic redshift $z$ and scale factor $a$, have been frequently utilized in the literature to study kinematics of Universe. In this paper, we follow a strategy that leads to these two well known parametrizations of deceleration parameter as well as an additional new parametrization $q=q_0+q_1(1-t/t_0)$, which is linear in cosmic time $t$. We study the features of this linearly time-varying deceleration parameter in contrast with the other two linear parametrizations. We investigate in detail the kinematics of the Universe by confronting the three models with the latest observational data. We further study the dynamics of the Universe by considering the linearly time-varying deceleration parameter model in comparison with the standard $Λ$CDM model. We also discuss future of the Universe in the context of the models under consideration.

Anisotropic model of dark energy dominated universe with hybrid expansion law

The paper deals with the study of the dynamics of Universe within the framework of a spatially homogeneous Bianchi-V space-time filled with a perfect fluid composed of non-interacting matter and dynamical dark energy components. We determine the Bianchi-V space-time by considering hybrid expansion law (HEL) for the average scale factor that yields power-law and exponential-law cosmologies in its special cases. In the HEL cosmology, the Universe exhibits transition from deceleration to acceleration. We find that the HEL Universe within the framework of Bianchi-V space-time is anisotropic at the early stages of evolution and becomes isotropic at late times. The dynamical dark energy in the HEL Bianchi-V Universe does not show departure from the usual cosmological constant at later times.

Complex fragment emission in low energy light-ion reactions

Inclusive energy spectra of the complex fragments (3 $\leq$ Z $\leq$ 5) emitted in the reactions $^{12}$C (77 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si, $^{11}$B (64 MeV)+ $^{28}$Si and $^{12}$C (73 MeV)+ $^{27}$Al (all having the same excitation energy of $ \sim$ 67 MeV), have been measured in the angular range of 10$^\circ$ $\lesssim θ_{lab} \lesssim$ 60$^\circ$. The fully energy damped (fusion-fission) and the partially energy damped (deep inelastic) components of the fragment energy spectra have been extracted. It has been found that the yields of the fully energy damped fragments for all the above reactions are in conformity with the respective statistical model predictions. The time scales of various deep inelastic fragment emissions have been extracted from the angular distribution data. The angular momentum dissipation in deep inelastic collisions has been estimated from the data and it has been found to be close to the corresponding sticking limit value.

Electromagnetic transition from the 4$^+$ to 2$^+$ resonance in $^8$Be measured via the radiative capture in $^4$He+$^4$He

An earlier measurement on the 4$^+$ to 2$^+$ radiative transition in $^8$Be provided the first electromagnetic signature of its dumbbell-like shape. However, the large uncertainty in the measured cross section does not allow a stringent test of nuclear structure models. The present paper reports a more elaborate and precise measurement for this transition, via the radiative capture in the $^4$He+$^4$He reaction, improving the accuracy by about a factor of three. The {\it ab initio} calculations of the radiative transition strength with improved three-nucleon forces are also presented. The experimental results are compared with the predictions of the alpha cluster model and {\it ab initio} calculations.

Measurement of the damping of nuclear shell effect in the doubly magic $^{208}$Pb region

The damping of the nuclear shell effect with excitation energy has been measured through an analysis of the neutron spectra following the triton transfer in the $^7$Li induced reaction on $^{205}$Tl. The measured neutron spectra demonstrate the expected large shell correction energy for the nuclei in the vicinity of doubly magic $^{208}$Pb and a small value for $^{184}$W. A quantitative extraction of the allowed values of the damping parameter $γ$, along with those for the asymptotic nuclear level density parameter $\tilde{a}$, has been made for the first time.

Bianchi type II models in the presence of perfect fluid and anisotropic dark energy

Spatially homogeneous but totally anisotropic and non-flat Bianchi type II cosmological model has been studied in general relativity in the presence of two minimally interacting fluids; a perfect fluid as the matter fluid and a hypothetical anisotropic fluid as the dark energy fluid. The Einstein's field equations have been solved by applying two kinematical ansätze: we have assumed the variation law for the mean Hubble parameter that yields a constant value of deceleration parameter, and one of the components of the shear tensor has been considered proportional to the mean Hubble parameter. We have particularly dwelled on the accelerating models with non-divergent expansion anisotropy as the Universe evolves. Yielding anisotropic pressure, the fluid we consider in the context of dark energy, can produce results that can be produced in the presence of isotropic fluid in accordance with the ΛCDM cosmology. However, the derived model gives additional opportunities by being able to allow kinematics that cannot be produced in the presence of fluids that yield only isotropic pressure. We have obtained well behaving cases where the anisotropy of the expansion and the anisotropy of the fluid converge to finite values (include zero) in the late Universe. We have also showed that although the metric we consider is totally anisotropic, the anisotropy of the dark energy is constrained to be axially symmetric, as long as the overall energy momentum tensor possesses zero shear stress.

The 1p transfer channel in the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction has been studied at E$_{lab}$ = 73, 81 and 85 MeV. The finite range distorted wave Born approximation calculations have been performed using phenomenological optical model potential to analyze the angular distributions for 3 transitions populating the 0.0, 1.78 and 4.62 MeV states of $^{28}$Si and 2 transitions populating the 2.12 and 4.44 MeV states of $^{11}$B via the $^{27}$Al($^{12}$C, $^{11}$B)$^{28}$Si reaction. The spectroscopic strengths as well as spectroscopic factors have been extracted for all the five states. The extracted strength values are compared with shell model calculations.

Some FRW Models of Accelerating Universe with Dark Energy

The paper deals with a spatially homogeneous and isotropic FRW space-time filled with perfect fluid and dark energy components. The two sources are assumed to interact minimally, and therefore their energy momentum tensors are conserved separately. A special law of variation for the Hubble parameter proposed by Berman (1983) has been utilized to solve the field equations. The Berman's law yields two explicit forms of the scale factor governing the FRW space-time and constant values of deceleration parameter. The role of dark energy with variable equation of state parameter has been studied in detail in the evolution of FRW universe. It has been found that dark energy dominates the universe at the present epoch, which is consistent with the observations. The physical behavior of the universe is discussed in detail.
