Geodesic stability and quasinormal modes of non-commutative Schwarzschild black hole employing Lyapunov exponent

We study the dynamics of test particle and stability of circular geodesics in the gravitational field of a non-commutative geometry inspired Schwarzschild black hole spacetime (NCSBH). The coordinate time Lyapunov exponent ($λ_{c}$) is crucial to investigate the stability of equatorial circular geodesics of massive and massless test particles. The stability or instability of circular orbits are discussed by analysing the variation of Lyapunov exponent with radius of these orbits for different values of non-commutative parameter ($α$). In the case of null circular orbits, the instability exponent is calculated and presented to discuss the instability of null circular orbits. Further, by relating parameters corresponding to null circular geodesics (i.e. angular frequency and Lyapunov exponent), the quasinormal modes (QNMs) for a massless scalar field perturbation in the eikonal approximation are evaluated, and also visualised by relating the real and imaginary parts. The nature of scalar field potential, by varying the non-commutative parameter ($α$) and angular momentum of perturbation ($l$), are also observed and discussed.

Rotating Black Holes in Horndeski Gravity: Thermodynamic and Gravitational Lensing

The lack of rotating black holes, typically found in nature, hinders testing modified gravity from astrophysical observations. We present the axially symmetric counterpart of an existing spherical hairy black hole in Horndeski gravity having an additional deviation parameter $Q$, which encompasses the Kerr black hole as a particular case ($Q=0$). We investigate the effect of Horndeski parameter $Q$ on the rotating black holes' geometry and analytically deduce the gravitational deflection angle of light in the weak-field limit. For the S2 source star, the deflection angle for the Sgr A* model of the rotating Horndeski gravity black hole for both prograde and retrograde photons is larger than the Kerr black hole values. We show how parameter $Q$ could be constrained by astrophysical implications of the lensing of this object. The thermodynamic quantities, Komar mass, and Komar angular momentum gets corrected by the parameter $Q$, but the Smarr relation $M_{\text{eff}}=2ST+2ΩJ_{\text{eff}}$ still holds at the event horizon.

Stability analysis of circular orbits around a traversable wormhole with massless conformally coupled scalar field

We study the stability of circular orbits in the background of a traversable wormhole (TWH) spacetime obtained as a solution of Einstein's field equations coupled conformally to a massless scalar field. The Lyapunov stability approach is employed to determine the stability of circular orbits (timelike and null) of non-spinning test particles around a TWH spacetime. In the case of timelike geodesics, the particle is confined to move in four different types of effective potentials depending on various values of the angular momentum L with both centrifugal and gravitational part. The effective potential for null geodesics consists of only a centrifugal part. Further, we characterize each fixed point according to its Lyapunov stability, and thus classify the circular orbits at the fixed point into stable center and unstable saddle points by depicting the corresponding phase-portraits.

Strong gravitational lensing by Bardeen black holes in 4D EGB gravity: constraints from supermassive black holes

Observation indicates that many nearby galaxies host supermassive central black holes. Modelling Bardeen models in four-dimensional Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (4D EGB) gravity, with additional parameters $\tildeα$ and charge $q$, as central black holes in various galaxies, we investigate gravitational lensing properties in strong deflection limits. Interestingly, the spherical photon orbit radius $x_m$, the critical impact parameter $u_m$, the lensing coefficient $\bar{b}$, the deflection angle $α_D(θ)$, angular position $θ_{\infty}$ are decreasing with $q$ and $α$ whereas the other lensing coefficient $\bar{a}$ and angular separation $s$ have opposite behaviour. Taking the supermassive black holes Sgr A* and M87* as the lens, we also compare observable signatures of 4D EGB Bardeen black holes with those of the Schwarzschild black holes. The angular position $θ_\infty$ for Sgr A* $\in$ (23.1853, \; 25.56427) $μ$as, whereas for M87* it is $\in$ ( 17.941,\; 19.7819) $μ$as. Further, the angular separation $s$, which is an increasing function of $\tildeα$ and $q$ for Sgr A* and M87* differs significantly, respectively, in (0.031997,0.14895) $μ$as and (0.0247, 0.1152) $μ$as. The deviations of the lensing observables $Δθ_{\infty}$ and $Δs$ for 4D EGB Bardeen black hole ($\tildeα=0.9,~q=0.09$) from the Schwarzschild black hole, respectively, can reach up to $2.3789~μ$as and $0.11695~μ$as for Sgr A* , $1.84084~μ$as and $0.0905~μ$as for M87*. On the other hand, the relative magnification $\in$ (4.65751,\; 6.82173). Considering twenty-two massive central black holes as lens, we also estimate the time delay $ΔT^s_{2,1}$ between the first and second relativistic image to find that, e.g., the time delay for Sgr A* and M87*, respectively, can reach $\sim9.86088$~min and $\sim16023.93$~min.

Noncommutative inspired black holes in regularised 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theory

Low energy limits of string theory indicated that the standard gravity action should be modified to include higher-order curvature terms, in the form of dimensionally continued Gauss-Bonnet densities. If one includes only quadratic curvature terms then the resulting theory is Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity valid only in $D>4$ dimensions. Recently there has been a surge of interest in regularizing, a $ D \to 4 $ limit, of EGB gravity, and the resulting regularized $4D$ EGB gravities have nontrivial gravitational dynamics. We obtain a static spherically symmetric noncommutative (NC) geometry inspired black hole solution with Gaussian mass distribution as a source in the regularized $4D$ EGB and also analyze their properties. The metric of the NC inspired $4D$ EGB black hole smoothly interpolates between a de Sitter core around the origin and $4D$ EGB metric as $r/\sqrtθ \to \infty$. Owing to the NC and GB term corrected black hole, the thermodynamic quantities have also been altered. The phase transitions for the local thermodynamic stability, in the theory, is outlined by a discontinuity of specific heat $C_{+}$ at a critical radius $r_+=r_C$, and $C_{+}$ changes from infinitely negative to infinitely positive and then down to a finite positive for the smaller $r_+$. The thermal evaporation process leads to a thermodynamic stable extremal black hole with vanishing temperature.

An electromagnetic extension of the Schwarzschild interior solution and the corresponding Buchdahl limit

We wish to construct a model for charged star as a generalization of the uniform density Schwarzschild interior solution. We employ the Vaidya and Tikekar ansatz [{\it Astrophys. Astron.} {\bf 3} (1982) 325] for one of the metric potentials and electric field is chosen in such a way that when it is switched off the metric reduces to the Schwarzschild. This relates charge distribution to the Vaidya-Tikekar parameter, $k$, indicating deviation form sphericity of three dimensional space when embedded into four dimensional Euclidean space. The model is examined against all the physical conditions required for a relativistic charged fluid sphere as an interior to a charged star. We also obtain and discuss charged analogue of the Buchdahl compactness bound.

Anisotropic generalization of Vaidya-Tikekar superdense star

We study superdense relativistic stars with anisotropic matter distributions with spheroidal spatial hypersurfaces. We propose a methodology to make an anisotropic generalization of the Vaidya-Tikekar superdense star model. The anisotropic Einstein field equations can be solved in terms of hypergeometric functions for our choice of gravitational potential and anisotropy. Particular parameter choices allow us to generate models of anisotropic stars in terms of elementary functions. Also, isotropic stars can be generated in the limit of vanishing anisotropy. In particular, we obtain the well known superdense models of Tikekar which are isotropic and have specific spheroidal geometries. The impact of anisotropy on the gross physical behaviour of a compact star is studied.

Ergosphere and shadow of a rotating regular black hole

The spacetime singularities in classical general relativity predicted by the celebrated singularity theorems are formed at the end of gravitational collapse. Quantum gravity is the expected theory to resolve the singularity problem, but we are now far from it. Therefore attention has shifted to models of regular black holes free from the singularities. A spherically symmetric regular toy model was obtained by Dymnikova (1992) which we demonstrate as an exact solution of Einstein's field equations coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics for a Lagrangian with parameter $b$ related to magnetic charge. We construct rotating counterpart of this solution which encompasses the Kerr black hole as a special case when charge is switched off ($b=0$). Event Horizon Telescope has released the first image of supermassive black hole M87$^*$, revealing the structure near black hole horizon. The rotating regular black hole's shadow may be useful to determine strong field regime. We investigate ergosphere and black hole shadow of rotating regular black hole to infer that their sizes are sensitive to charge $b$ and have a richer chaotic structure. In particular, rotating regular black hole possess larger size, but less distorted shadows when compared with Kerr black holes. We find one to one correspondence between ergosphere and shadow of the black hole.

Matter shear and vorticity in conformally flat spacetimes

In this paper we consider conformally flat perturbations on the Friedmann Lemaitre Robertson Walker (FLRW) spacetime containing a general matter field. Working with the linearised field equations, we unearth some important geometrical properties of matter shear and vorticity and how they interact with the thermodynamical quantities in the absence of any free gravity powered by the Weyl curvature. As there are hardly any physically realistic rotating exact conformally flat solutions in general relativity, these covariant and gauge invariant results bring out transparently the role of vorticity in the linearised regime. Most interestingly, we demonstrate that the matter shear obeys a transverse traceless tensor wave equation, and the vorticity obeys a vector wave equation in this regime. These shear and vorticity waves replace the gravitational waves in the sense that they causally carry the information about local change in the curvature of these spacetimes.

Non-existence of expansion-free dynamical stars with rotation and spatial twist

Extending a previous work by the same authors, we investigate the existence of expansion-free dynamical stars with non-zero spatial twist and rotation and show that such stars cannot exist. Firstly, it is shown that a rotating expansion-free dynamical star with zero twist cannot exist. This is due to the fact that such stars cannot radiate and they are shear-free, in which case the energy density $ρ$ is time independent. Secondly, we prove that a non-rotating expansion-free dynamical star with non-zero spatial twist also cannot exist, as either the strong energy condition must be violated, i.e. $ρ+3p<0$, or the star must be shear-free in which case the star is static ($Θ=Ω=Σ=0$). Finally, if we insist that the rotation and spatial twist are simultaneously non-zero, then the star cannot be shear-free in which case we obtain a quadratic polynomial equation in $ϕ$ and $Σ$ with no real solutions. Therefore such stars cannot exist.

Phase transition of AdS black holes in 4D EGB gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics

Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet (EGB) gravity is an outcome of quadratic curvature corrections to the Einstein-Hilbert gravity action in the form of a Gauss-Bonnet (GB) term in $ D > 4$ dimensions and EGB gravity is topologically invariant in $4D$. Recently several ways have been proposed for regularizing, a $ D \to 4 $ limit of EGB, for nontrivial gravitational dynamics in $ 4D $. Motivated by the importance of anti-de Sitter gravity/conformal field theory correspondence (AdS/CFT), we analyze black holes with AdS asymptotic to regularized $4D$ EGB gravity coupled to the nonlinear electrodynamics (NED) field. For a static spherically symmetric \textit{ansatz} the field equations are solved exactly, using two different approaches, for a NED Lagrangian to obtain an identical solution$-$namely NED charged AdS black holes in $4D$ EGB gravity which retains several known solutions. Owing to the NED charge corrected EGB black holes, the thermodynamic quantities are also modified, and the entropy does not obey the usual area law. We calculate the heat capacity and Helmholtz free energy, in terms of horizon radii, to investigate both local and global thermodynamic stability of black holes. We observe a secondary Hawking-Page transition between the smaller thermally favoured black hole and thermal AdS space. Our results show that the behaviour of Hawking's evaporation abruptly halts at shorter radii regime such that the black holes do have a thermodynamically stable remnant with vanishing temperature.

Quasinormal modes, shadow and greybody factors of 5D electrically charged Bardeen black holes

We study quasinormal modes (QNMs) in 5D electrically charged Bardeen black holes spacetime by considering the scalar and electromagnetic field perturbations. The black holes spacetime is an exact solution of Einstein gravity coupled to nonlinear electrodynamics in five dimensions, which has nonsingular behavior. To calculate QNMs, we use the WKB approximation method up to sixth order. Due to the presence of electric charge $q_e > 0$, both the scalar and electromagnetic field perturbations decay more slowly when compared to the Schwarzschild-Tangherlini black holes. We discover that the scalar field perturbations oscillate more rapidly when compared to the electromagnetic field perturbations. In terms of damping, the scalar field perturbations damp more quickly. Graphically we show that the transmission (reflection) coefficients decrease (increase) with an increase in the magnitude of the electric charge $q_e$. The emission of gravitational waves allows spacetime to undergo damped oscillations due to the nonzero value of the imaginary part, which is always negative. The imaginary part of the QNMs frequencies is continuously decreasing with an increase in the magnitude of the electric charge $q_e$ for a given mode ($l,n$). A connection between the QNMs frequencies and the black hole shadow, as well as the geometric cross-section in the eikonal limit, is also described.

Radiating black holes in the novel 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

Recently Glavan and Lin [Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 081301 (2020)] formulated a novel Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity in which the Gauss-Bonnet coupling has been rescaled as $α/(D-4)$ and the $4D$ theory is defined as the limit $D \rightarrow 4$, which preserves the number degrees of freedom thereby free from the Ostrogradsky instability. We present exact spherically symmetric nonstatic null dust solutions in the novel 4D Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity that bypasses the Lovelock theorem. Our solution represents radiating black holes and regains, in the limit $α\rightarrow 0$, the famous Vaidya black hole of general relativity (GR). We discuss the horizon structure of black hole solutions to find that the three horizon-like loci that characterizes its structure, viz. $AH$, $EH$ and $ TLS $ have the relationship $r_{EH} < r_{AH} = r_{TLS}$. The charged radiating black holes in the theory, generalizing Bonnor-Vaidya black holes, are also considered. In particular our results, in the limit $α\rightarrow 0$, reduced exactly to \emph{vis-$\grave{a}$-vis} 4D black holes of GR.

Rotating five-dimensional electrically charged Bardeen regular black holes

We derive a rotating counterpart of the five-dimensional electrically charged Bardeen regular black holes spacetime by employing the Giampieri algorithm on static one. The associated nonlinear electrodynamics source is computed in order to justify the rotating solution. We thoroughly discuss the energy conditions and the other properties of the rotating spacetime. The black hole thermodynamics of the rotating spacetime is also presented. In particular, the thermodynamic quantities such as the Hawking temperature and the heat capacity are calculated and plotted to see the thermal behavior. The Hawking temperature profile of the black hole implies that the regular black holes are thermally colder than its singular counterpart. On the other hand, we find that the heat capacity has two branches: the negative branch corresponds to the unstable phase and the positive branch corresponds to that of the stable phase for a suitable choice of the physical parameters characterizing the black holes.

Conformal symmetries in generalised Vaidya spacetimes

In this paper we excavate, for the first time, the most general class of conformal Killing vectors, that lies in the two dimensional subspace described by the null and radial co-ordinates, that are admitted by the generalised Vaidya geometry. Subsequently we find the most general class of generalised Vaidya mass functions that give rise to such conformal symmetry. From our analysis it is clear that why some well known subclasses of generalised Vaidya geometry, like pure Vaidya or charged Vaidya solutions, admit only homothetic Killing vectors but no proper conformal Killing vectors with non constant conformal factors. We also study the gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetimes that posses proper conformal symmetry to show that if the central singularity is naked then in the vicinity of the central singularity the spacetime becomes almost self similar. This study definitely sheds new light on the geometrical properties of generalised Vaidya spacetimes.

Conformally symmetric relativistic star

We investigate whether compact stars having Tolman-like interior geometry admit conformal symmetry. Taking anisotropic pressure along the two principal directions within the compact object, we obtain physically relevant quantities such as transverse and radial pressure, density and redshift function. We study the equation of state for the matter distribution inside the star. From the relation between pressure and density function of the constituent matter, we explore the nature and properties of the interior matter. The red shift function, compactness parameter are found to be physically reasonable. The matter inside the star satisfies the null, weak and strong energy conditions. Finally, we compare the masses and radii predicted from the model with corresponding values in some observed stars.

New class of LRS spacetimes with simultaneous rotation and spatial twist

We establish the existence and find the necessary and sufficient conditions for a new class of solutions of Locally Rotationally Symmetric spacetimes that have non vanishing rotation and spatial twist simultaneously. We transparently show that the existence of such solutions demand non vanishing and bounded heat flux and these solutions are self similar. We provide a brief algorithm indicating how to solve the system of field equations with the given Cauchy data on an initial spacelike Cauchy surface. Finally we argue that these solutions can be used as a first approximation from spherical symmetry to study rotating, inhomogeneous, dynamic and radiating astrophysical stars.

Notes on Cosmic Censorship Conjecture revisited: Covariantly

In this paper we study the dynamics of the trapped region using a frame independent semi-tetrad covariant formalism for general Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) class II spacetimes. We covariantly prove some important geometrical results for the apparent horizon, and state the necessary and sufficient conditions for a singularity to be locally naked. These conditions bring out, for the first time in a quantitative and transparent manner, the importance of the Weyl curvature in deforming and delaying the trapped region during continual gravitational collapse, making the central singularity locally visible.

Buchdahl-Bondi limit in modified gravity: Packing extra effective mass in relativistic compact stars

We generalise the Buchdahl-Bondi limit for the case of static, spherically symmetric, relativistic compact stars immersed in Schwarzschild vacuum in f(R)-theory of gravity, subject to very generic regularity, thermodynamic stability and matching conditions. Similar to the case of general relativity, our result is model independent and remains true for any physically realistic equation of state of standard stellar matter. We show that an extra-massive stable star can exist in these theories, with surface redshift larger than 2, which is forbidden in general relativity. This result gives a novel and interesting observational test for validity or otherwise of general relativity and also provides a possible solution to the dark matter problem.

Compact stars with linear equation of state in isotropic coordinates

We present a new class of spherically symmetric spacetimes for matter distributions with anisotropic pressures in the presence of an electric field. The equation of state for the matter distribution is linear. A class of new exact solutions is found to the Einstein-Maxwell system of equations with an isotropic form of the line element. We achieve this by specifying particular forms for one of the gravitational potentials and the electric field intensity. We regain the masses of the stars PSR J1614-2230, Vela X-1, PSR J1903+327, 4U 1820-30 and SAX J1808.4-3658 for particular parameter values. A detailed physical analysis for the star PSR J1614-2230 indicates that the model is well behaved.

Compact stars with quadratic equation of state

We provide new exact solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell system of equations for matter configurations with anisotropy and charge. The spacetime is static and spherically symmetric. A quadratic equation of state is utilised for the matter distribution. By specifying a particular form for one of the gravitational potentials and the electric field intensity we obtain new exact solutions in isotropic coordinates. In our general class of models, an earlier model with a linear equation of state is regained. For particular choices of parameters we regain the masses of the stars PSR J1614-2230, 4U 1608-52, PSR J1903+0327, EXO 1745-248 and SAX J1808.4-3658. Exact barotropic distributions in Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity

New exact solutions to the field equations in the Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet modified theory of gravity for a 5--dimensional spherically symmetric static distribution of a perfect fluid is obtained. The Frobenius method is used to obtain this solution in terms of an infinite series. Exact solutions are generated in terms of polynomials from the infinite series. The 5--dimensional Einstein solution is also found by setting the coupling constant to be zero. All models admit a barotropic equation of state. Linear equations of state are admitted in particular models with the energy density profile of isothermal distributions. We examine the physicality of the solution by studying graphically the isotropic pressure and the energy density. The model is well behaved in the interior and the weak, strong and dominant energy conditions are satisfied.

Exact EGB models for spherical static perfect fluids

We obtain a new exact solution to the field equations in the EGB modified theory of gravity for a 5-dimensional spherically symmetric static distribution. By using a transformation, the study is reduced to the analysis of a single second order nonlinear differential equation. In general the condition of pressure isotropy produces a first order differential equation which is an Abel equation of the second kind. An exact solution is found. The solution is examined for physical admissability. In particular a set of constants is found which ensures that a pressure-free hypersurface exists which defines the boundary of the distribution. Additionally the isotropic pressure and the energy density are shown to be positive within the radius of the sphere. The adiabatic sound speed criterion is also satisfied within the fluid ensuring a subluminal sound speed. Furthermore, the weak, strong and dominant conditions hold throughout the distribution. On setting the Gauss-Bonnet coupling to zero, an exact solution for 5-dimensional perfect fluids in the standard Einstein theory is obtained. Plots of the dynamical quantities for the Gauss-Bonnet and the Einstein case reveal that the pressure is unaffected while the the energy density increases under the influence of the Gauss-Bonnet term.

Is cosmic censorship restored in higher dimensions?

In this paper we extend the analysis of gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetimes to higher dimensions, in the context of the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture. We present the sufficient conditions on the generalised Vaidya mass function, that will generate a locally naked singular end state. Our analysis here generalises all the earlier works on collapsing higher dimensional generalised Vaidya spacetimes. With specific examples, we show the existence of classes of mass functions that lead to a naked singularity in four dimensions, which gets covered on transition to higher dimensions. Hence for these classes of mass function Cosmic Censorship gets restored in higher dimensions and the transition to higher dimensions restricts the set of initial data that results in a naked singularity.

Lovelock black hole thermodynamics in a string cloud model

The Lovelock theory is an extension of general relativity to higher dimensions. We study the Lovelock black hole for a string cloud model in arbitrary dimensional spacetime, and in turn also analyze its thermodynamical properties. Indeed, we compute the mass, temperature and entropy of the black hole and also perform a thermodynamical stability analysis. The phase structure suggests that the Hawking-Page phase transition is achievable. It turns out that the presence of the Lovelock terms and/or background string cloud completely changes the black hole thermodynamics. Interestingly, the entropy of a black hole is unaffected due to a background string cloud, but has a correction term due to Lovelock gravity.

We assume a polytropic equation of state for the matter configuration. New classes of exact solutions are generated for different polytropic indices. The model is well behaved and we can regain masses of several observed objects, in particular we obtain the mass of the star PSR J1903+327.

The effect of a two-fluid atmosphere on relativistic stars

We model the physical behaviour at the surface of a relativistic radiating star in the strong gravity limit. The spacetime in the interior is taken to be spherically symmetrical and shear-free. The heat conduction in the interior of the star is governed by the geodesic motion of fluid particles and a nonvanishing radially directed heat flux. The local atmosphere in the exterior region is a two-component system consisting of standard pressureless (null) radiation and an additional null fluid with nonzero pressure and constant energy density. We analyse the generalised junction condition for the matter and gravitational variables on the stellar surface and generate an exact solution. We investigate the effect of the exterior energy density on the temporal evolution of the radiating fluid pressure, luminosty, gravitational redshift and mass flow at the boundary of the star. The influence of the density on the rate of gravitational collapse is also probed and the strong, dominant and weak energy conditions are also tested. We show that the presence of the additional null fluid has a significant effect on the dynamical evolution of the star.

Thermodynamics of gravity favours Weak Censorship Conjecture

We use the formulation of thermodynamics of gravity as proposed by Clifton, Ellis and Tavakol on the gravitational collapse of dustlike matter, that violates the strong or weak cosmic censorship conjecture depending on the initial data. We transparently demonstrate that the gravitational entropy prefers the scenario where the stronger version is violated but the weak censorship conjecture is satisfied. This is a novel result, showing the weak cosmic censorship and hence the future asymptotically simple structure of spacetime, is being validated by the nature of gravity, without imposing any extra constraint on the form of matter.

Universality of isothermal fluid spheres in Lovelock gravity

We show universality of isothermal fluid spheres in pure Lovelock gravity where the equation of motion has only one $N$th order term coming from the corresponding Lovelock polynomial action of degree $N$. Isothermality is characterized by the equation of state, $p = αρ$ and the property, $ρ\sim 1/r^{2N}$. Then the solution describing isothermal spheres, which exist only for the pure Lovelock equation, is of the same form for the general Lovelock degree $N$ in all dimenions $d \geq 2N+2$. We further prove that the necessary and sufficient condition for the isothermal sphere is that its metric is conformal to the massless global monopole or the solid angle deficit metric, and this feature is also universal.

Accretion onto a black hole in a string cloud background

We examine the accretion process onto the black hole with a string cloud background, where the horizon of the black hole has an enlarged radius $r_H=2 M/(1-α)$, due to the string cloud parameter $α\; (0 \leq α< 1)$. The problem of stationary, spherically symmetric accretion of a polytropic fluid is analysed to obtain an analytic solution for such a perturbation. Generalised expressions for the accretion rate $\dot{M}$, critical radius $r_s$, and other flow parameters are found. The accretion rate $\dot{M}$ is an explicit function of the black hole mass $M$, as well as the gas boundary conditions and the string cloud parameter $α$. We also find the gas compression ratios and temperature profiles below the accretion radius and at the event horizon. It is shown that the mass accretion rate, for both the relativistic and the non-relativistic fluid by a black hole in the string cloud model, increases with increase in $α$.

An Emergent Universe supported by chiral cosmological fields in Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet gravity

We propose the application of the chiral cosmological model (CCM) for the Einstein--Gauss--Bonnet (EGB) theory of gravitation with the aim of finding new models of the Emergent Universe (EmU) scenario. We analysed the EmU supported by two chiral cosmological fields for a spatially flat universe, while we have used three chiral fields when we investigated open and closed universes. To prove the validity of the EmU scenario we fixed the scale factor and found the exact solution by decomposition of EGB equations and solving the chiral field dynamics equation. To this end, we suggested the decomposition of the EGB equations in such a way that the first chiral field is responsible for the Einstein part of the model, while the second field, together with kinetic interaction term, is connected with the Gauss--Bonnet part of the theory. We proved that both fields are phantom ones under this decomposition, and that the model has a solution if the kinetic interaction between the fields equals a constant. We have presented the exact solution in terms of cosmic time. This was done for a spatially flat universe. In the case of open and closed universes we introduced the third chiral field (canonical for closed and phantom for open universe) which is responsible for the EGB and curvature parts. The solution of the third field equation is obtained in quadratures. Thus we have proved that the CCM is able to support EmU scenario in EGB gravity for spatially flat, open and closed universes.

Astrophysical Black Hole horizons in a cosmological context: Nature and possible consequences on Hawking Radiation

This paper considers the nature of apparent horizons for astrophysical black hole situated in a realistic cosmological context. Using semi-tetrad covariant methods we study the local evolutions of the boundaries of the trapped region in the spacetime. For a collapsing massive star immersed in a cosmology with Cosmic Background Radiation (CBR), we show that the initial 2 dimensional marginally trapped surface bifurcates into inner and outer horizons. The inner horizon is timelike while the continuous CBR influx into the black hole makes the outer horizon spacelike. We discuss the possible consequences of these features for Hawking radiation in realistic astrophysical contexts.

Charged anisotropic models for quark stars

We perform a detailed physical analysis for a class of exact solutions for the Einstein-Maxwell equations. The linear equation of state consistent with quark stars has been incorporated in the model. The physical analysis of the exact solutions is performed by considering the charged anisotropic stars for the particular nonsingular exact model obtained by Maharaj, Sunzu and Ray. In performing such an analysis we regain masses obtained by previous researchers for isotropic and anisotropic matter. It is also indicated that other masses and radii may be generated which are in acceptable ranges consistent with observed values of stellar objects. A study of the mass-radius relation indicates the effect of the electromagnetic field and anisotropy on the mass of the relativistic star.

Cloud of strings for radiating black holes in Lovelock gravity

We present exact spherically symmetric null dust solutions in the third order Lovelock gravity with a string cloud background in arbitrary $N$ dimensions,. This represents radiating black holes and generalizes the well known Vaidya solution to Lovelock gravity with a string cloud in the background. We also discuss the energy conditions and horizon structures, and explicitly bring out the effect of the string clouds on the horizon structure of black hole solutions for the higher dimensional general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories. It turns out that the presence of the coupling constant of the Gauss-Bonnet terms and/or background string clouds completely changes the structure of the horizon and this may lead to a naked singularity. We recover known spherically symmetric radiating models as well as static black holes in the appropriate limits.

Clouds of strings in third-order Lovelock gravity

Lovelock theory is a natural extension of the Einstein theory of general relativity to higher dimensions in which the first and second orders correspond, respectively, to general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet gravity. We present exact black hole solutions of $D\geq 4$-dimensional spacetime for first-, second-, and third-order Lovelock gravities in a string cloud background. Further, we compute the mass, temperature, and entropy of black hole solutions for the higher-dimensional general relativity and Einstein-Gauss-Bonnet theories and also perform thermodynamic stability of black holes. It turns out that the presence of the Gauss-Bonnet term and/or background string cloud completely changes the black hole thermodynamics. Interestingly, the entropy of a black hole is unaffected due to a background string cloud. We rediscover several known spherically symmetric black hole solutions in the appropriate limits.

Gravitational collapse of generalised Vaidya spacetime

We study the gravitational collapse of a generalised Vaidya spacetime in the context of the Cosmic Censorship hypothesis. We develop a general mathematical framework to study the conditions on the mass function so that future directed non-spacelike geodesics can terminate at the singularity in the past. Thus our result generalises earlier works on gravitational collapse of the combinations of Type-I and Type-II matter fields. Our analysis shows transparently that there exist classes of generalised Vaidya mass functions for which the collapse terminates with a locally naked central singularity. We calculate the strength of the these singularities to show that they are strong curvature singularities and there can be no extension of spacetime through them.

Quark star model with charged anisotropic matter

We find two new classes of exact solutions to the Einstein-Maxwell system of equations. The matter distribution satisfies a linear equation of state consistent with quark matter. The field equations are integrated by specifying forms for the measure of anisotropy and a gravitational potential which are physically reasonable. The first class has a constant potential and is regular in the stellar interior. It contains the familiar Einstein model as a limiting case and we can generate finite masses for the star. The second class has a variable potential and singularity at the centre. A graphical analysis indicates that the matter variables are well behaved.

Radiating Kerr-like regular black hole

We derive a radiating regular rotating black hole solution, radiating Kerr-like regular black hole solution. We achieve this by starting from the Hayward regular black hole solution via a complex transformation suggested by Newman-Janis. The radiating Kerr metric, the Kerr-like regular black hole and the standard Kerr metric are regained in the appropriate limits. The structure of the horizon-like surfaces are also determined.

Accretion onto a higher dimensional black hole

We examine the steady-state spherically symmetric accretion of relativistic fluids, with a polytropic equation of state, onto a higher dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. The mass accretion rate, critical radius, and flow parameters are determined and compared with results obtained in standard four dimensions. The accretion rate, $\dot{M}$, is an explicit function of the black hole mass, $M$, as well as the gas boundary conditions and the dimensionality, $D$, of the spacetime. We also find the asymptotic compression ratios and temperature profiles below the accretion radius and at the event horizon. This analysis is a generalization of Michel's solution to higher dimensions and of the Newtonian expressions of Giddings and Mangano which considers the accretion of TeV black holes.

Radiating Kerr-Newman black hole in $f(R)$ gravity

We derive an exact radiating Kerr-Newman like black hole solution, with constant curvature $R=R_0$ imposed, to {\it metric} $f(R)$ gravity via complex transformations suggested by Newman-Janis. This generates a geometry which is precisely that of radiating Kerr-Newman-de Sitter / anti-de Sitter with the $f(R)$ gravity contributing an $R_0$ cosmological-like term. The structure of three horizon-like surfaces, {\it viz.} timelike limit surface, apparent horizon and event horizon, are determined. We demonstrate the existence of an additional cosmological horizon, in $f(R)$ gravity model, apart from the regular black hole horizons that exist in the analogous general relativity case. In particular, the known stationary Kerr-Newman black hole solutions of $f(R)$ gravity and general relativity are retrieved. We find that the timelike limit surface becomes less prolate with $R_0$ thereby affecting the shape of the corresponding ergosphere.
