Dynamics of Interacting Hotspots - II

In the absence of any proper clinical solution, human civilization is only left with sophisticated intervention measures to contain the spread of COVID-19. However, the existing models to estimate the intervention does not take into account the realistic connectivity of the epicentres of the pandemic. We generalise our earlier model of interacting hotspots to test various possibilities of intervention in a model state consisting of multiple epicentres. We also analyse situations when the hotspots are spatially correlated and the interaction is limited to population exchanges with the nearest neighbours. We show that the heterogeneity in the infection propagation is solely dependent on the protocol of the containment and its strength. We explore many such situations and discuss possibilities.

Dynamics of Interacting Hotspots -- I

The worldwide spread of COVID-19 has called for fast advancement of new modelling strategies to estimate its unprecedented spread. Here, we introduce a model based on the fundamental SIR equations with a stochastic disorder by a random exchange of infected populations between cities to study dynamics in an interacting network of epicentres in a model state. Although each stochastic exchange conserves populations pair-wise, the disorder drives the global system towards newer routes to dynamic equilibrium. Upon controlling the range of the exchange fraction, we show that it is possible to control the heterogeneity in the spread and the co-operativity among the interacting hotspots. Data of collective temporal evolution of the infected populations in federal states of Germany validate the qualitative features of the model.

Non Gaussian information of heterogeneity in Soft Matter

Heterogeneity in dynamics in the form of non-Gaussian molecular displacement distributions appears ubiquitously in soft matter. We address the quantification of such heterogeneity using an information-theoretic measure of the distance between the actual displacement distribution and its nearest Gaussian estimation. We explore the usefulness of this measure in two generic scenarios of random walkers in heterogeneous media. We show that our proposed measure leads to a better quantification of non-Gaussianity than the conventional ones based on moment ratios.

Microscopic Insights into Dynamical Heterogeneity in a Lane-forming Liquid

Dynamical heterogeneity (DH) in non-equilibrium systems is a topic of profound interest yet an open question. In a model system of constantly driven oppositely charged binary colloidal suspension, we explore DH in a model lane-forming system using BD simulations. We show that the system undergoes structural and dynamical cross-over using spatio-temporal correlation functions. For small field, the structural relaxation is homogeneous while it is heterogeneous for sufficiently high field. In order to explore the heterogeneity, we track and tag the particles to compute partial structures that relax at different rates, in which heterogeneity has its maximum in the intermediate state.

Heterogeneous Dynamical Relaxations in a Lane Forming Liquid

The connection between domain relaxations at individual scales and the collective heterogeneous response in non-equilibrium systems is a topic of profound interest in recent times. In a model sys- tem of constantly driven oppositely charged binary colloidal suspension, we probe such relaxations as the elongated lanes of likely charges interact with increasing field in the orthogonal plane using Brownian Dynamics simulations. We show that the system undergoes a structural and dynamical cross-over: from an initial fast-relaxing homogeneous phase to a heterogeneous lane phase following a slow relaxation via an intermediate phase with mixed relaxation. Our observations also affirm the coexistence of multiple time and length scales in this phase. Unlike glasses, these time and length scales are not separated by orders of magnitude, they are comparable in magnitudes. Using a phenomenological model, we, further, reinforce that these competing relaxations are a manifesta- tion of heterogeneity in diffusion which is rather generic in systems with such competing relaxations.

Analytical Form of Forces in Hydrophobic Collapse

We calculate analytically the forces between two solvophobic solutes, considering a model system. We show that the effective interaction forces between two solvophobic solutes, mediated by the solvent, is attractive for short ranges, which decreases linearly with surface-to-surface separation s between the solutes and repulsive in the long range falling off as 1 / s 4 . The attraction originates from the unbalanced Laplace force at the liquid-gas interface, generated by the repulsive interaction with the solvent particles, around the solutes at small s. The long range part arises due to unbalanced osmotic pressure. We illustrate the calculations for the Lennard-Jones solvent. We discuss the general implication of our results in the context of hydrophobic collapse.
