Extendability of $1$-decomposable complexes

A well-known conjecture of Simon (1994) states that any pure $d$-dimensional shellable complex on $n$ vertices can be extended to $Δ_{n-1}^{(d)}$, the $d$-skeleton of the $(n-1)$-dimensional simplex, by attaching one facet at a time while maintaining shellability. The notion of $k$-decomposability for simplicial complexes, which generalizes shellability, was introduced by Provan and Billera (1980). Coleman, Dochtermann, Geist, and Oh (2022) showed that any pure $d$-dimensional $0$-decomposable complex on $n$ vertices can similarly be extended to $Δ_{n-1}^{(d)}$, attaching one facet at a time while preserving $0$-decomposability. In this paper, we investigate the analogous question for $1$-decomposable complexes. We prove a slightly relaxed version: any pure $d$-dimensional $1$-decomposable complex on $n$ vertices can be extended to $Δ_{n + d - 3}^{(d)}$, attaching one facet at a time while maintaining $1$-decomposability.

The parabolic coset structure of Bruhat intervals in Coxeter groups

In this paper, we study the decomposition of Bruhat intervals in a Coxeter group with respect to cosets of a parabolic subgroup. Our main result is that the intersection of a lower Bruhat interval with a parabolic coset contains a unique maximal element. As an application, we give a decomposition formula for the Poincaré polynomial of a Coxeter group element. We also show that the fibers of standard parabolic projection maps on Schubert varieties are themselves Schubert varieties.

Links in the complex of weakly separated collections

Plabic graphs are interesting combinatorial objects used to study the totally nonnegative Grassmannian. Faces of plabic graphs are labeled by $k$-element sets of positive integers, and a collection of such $k$-element sets are the face labels of a plabic graph if that collection forms a maximal weakly separated collection. There are moves that one can apply to plabic graphs, and thus to maximal weakly separated collections, analogous to mutations of seeds in cluster algebras. In this short note, we show that if two maximal weakly separated collections can be mutated from one to another, then one can do so while freezing the face labels they have in common.

The Selberg integral and Young books

The Selberg integral is an important integral first evaluated by Selberg in 1944. Stanley found a combinatorial interpretation of the Selberg integral in terms of permutations. In this paper, new combinatorial objects "Young books" are introduced and shown to have a connection with the Selberg integral. This connection gives an enumeration formula for Young books. It is shown that special cases of Young books become standard Young tableaux of various shapes: shifted staircases, squares, certain skew shapes, and certain truncated shapes. As a consequence, product formulas for the number of standard Young tableaux of these shapes are obtained.

Weak Separation and Plabic Graphs

Leclerc and Zelevinsky described quasicommuting families of quantum minors in terms of a certain combinatorial condition, called weak separation. They conjectured that all maximal by inclusion weakly separated collections of minors have the same cardinality, and that they can be related to each other by a sequence of mutations. On the other hand, Postnikov studied total positivity on the Grassmannian. He described a stratification of the totally nonnegative Grassmannian into positroid strata, and constructed their parametrization using plabic graphs. In this paper we link the study of weak separation to plabeic graphs. We extend the notion of weak separation to positroids. We generalize the conjectures of Leclerc and Zelevinsky, and related ones of Scott, and prove them. We show that the maximal weakly separated collections in a positroid are in bijective correspondence with the plabic graphs. This correspondence allows us to use the combinatorial techniques of positroids and plabic graphs to prove the (generalized) purity and mutation connectedness conjectures.

Triangulations of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ and Tropical Oriented Matroids

Develin and Sturmfels showed that regular triangulations of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ can be thought as tropical polytopes. Tropical oriented matroids were defined by Ardila and Develin, and were conjectured to be in bijection with all subdivisions of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$. In this paper, we show that any triangulation of $Δ_{n-1} \times Δ_{d-1}$ encodes a tropical oriented matroid. We also suggest a new class of combinatorial objects that may describe all subdivisions of a bigger class of polytopes.
