A Combinatorial Approach to the Number of Solutions of Systems of Homogeneous Polynomial Equations over Finite Fields

We give a complete conjectural formula for the number $e_r(d,m)$ of maximum possible ${\mathbb{F}}q$-rational points on a projective algebraic variety defined by $r$ linearly independent homogeneous polynomial equations of degree $d$ in $m+1$ variables with coefficients in the finite field ${\mathbb{F}}q$ with $q$ elements, when $d<q$. It is shown that this formula holds in the affirmative for several values of $r$. In the general case, we give explicit lower and upper bounds for $e_r(d,m)$ and show that they are sometimes attained. Our approach uses a relatively recent result, called the projective footprint bound, together with results from extremal combinatorics such as the Clements-Lindström Theorem and its variants. Applications to the problem of determining the generalized Hamming weights of projective Reed-Muller codes are also included.

On the Purity of Resolutions of Stanley-Reisner Rings Associated to Reed-Muller Codes

Following Johnsen and Verdure (2013), we can associate to any linear code $C$ an abstract simplicial complex and in turn, a Stanley-Reisner ring $R_C$. The ring $R_C$ is a standard graded algebra over a field and its projective dimension is precisely the dimension of $C$. Thus $R_C$ admits a graded minimal free resolution and the resulting graded Betti numbers are known to determine the generalized Hamming weights of $C$. The question of purity of the minimal free resolution of $R_C$ was considered by Ghorpade and Singh (2020) when $C$ is the generalized Reed-Muller code. They showed that the resolution is pure in some cases and it is not pure in many other cases. Here we give a complete characterization of the purity of graded minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to generalized Reed-Muller codes of an arbitrary order.

Pure Resolutions, Linear Codes, and Betti Numbers

We consider the minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to linear codes and give an intrinsic characterization of linear codes having a pure resolution. We use this characterization to quickly deduce the minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings associated to MDS codes as well as constant weight codes. We also deduce that the minimal free resolutions of Stanley-Reisner rings of first order Reed-Muller codes are pure, and explicitly describe the Betti numbers. Further, we show that in the case of higher order Reed-Muller codes, the minimal free resolutions are almost always not pure. The nature of the minimal free resolution of Stanley-Reisner rings corresponding to several classes of two-weight codes, besides the first order Reed-Muller codes, is also determined.

Linear Codes associated to Determinantal Varieties

We consider a class of linear codes associated to projective algebraic varieties defined by the vanishing of minors of a fixed size of a generic matrix. It is seen that the resulting code has only a small number of distinct weights. The case of varieties defined by the vanishing of 2 x 2 minors is considered in some detail. Here we obtain the complete weight distribution. Moreover, several generalized Hamming weights are determined explicitly and it is shown that the first few of them coincide with the distinct nonzero weights. One of the tools used is to determine the maximum possible number of matrices of rank 1 in a linear space of matrices of a given dimension over a finite field. In particular, we determine the structure and the maximum possible dimension of linear spaces of matrices in which every nonzero matrix has rank 1.

On a conjecture of Tsfasman and an inequality of Serre for the number of points on hypersurfaces over finite fields

We give a short proof of an inequality, conjectured by Tsfasman and proved by Serre, for the maximum number of points on hypersurfaces over finite fields. Further, we consider a conjectural extension, due to Tsfasman and Boguslavsky, of this inequality to an explicit formula for the maximum number of common solutions of a system of linearly independent multivariate homogeneous polynomials of the same degree with coefficients in a finite field. This conjecture is shown to be false, in general, but is also shown to hold in the affirmative in a special case. Applications to generalized Hamming weights of projective Reed-Muller codes are outlined and a comparison with an older conjecture of Lachaud and a recent result of Couvreur is given.

Automorphism groups of Grassmann codes

We use a theorem of Chow (1949) on line-preserving bijections of Grassmannians to determine the automorphism group of Grassmann codes. Further, we analyze the automorphisms of the big cell of a Grassmannian and then use it to settle an open question of Beelen et al. (2010) concerning the permutation automorphism groups of affine Grassmann codes. Finally, we prove an analogue of Chow's theorem for the case of Schubert divisors in Grassmannians and then use it to determine the automorphism group of linear codes associated to such Schubert divisors. In the course of this work, we also give an alternative short proof of MacWilliams theorem concerning the equivalence of linear codes and a characterization of maximal linear subspaces of Schubert divisors in Grassmannians.

Hilbert series of certain jet schemes of determinantal varieties

We consider the affine variety ${\mathcal{Z}_{2,2}^{m,n}}$ (or just "$Y$") of first order jets over ${\mathcal{Z}_{2}^{m,n}}$ (or just "$X$"), where $X$ is the classical determinantal variety given by the vanishing of all $2\times 2$ minors of a generic $m\times n$ matrix. When $2 < m \le n$, this jet scheme $Y$ has two irreducible components: a trivial component, isomorphic to an affine space, and a nontrivial component that is the closure of the jets supported over the smooth locus of $X$. This second component is referred to as the principal component of $Y$; it is, in fact, a cone and can also be regarded as a projective subvariety of $\mathbf{P}^{2mn-1}$. We prove that the degree of the principal component of $Y$ is the square of the degree of $X$ and more generally, the Hilbert series of the principal component of $Y$ is the square of the Hilbert series of $X$. As an application, we compute the $a$-invariant of the principal component of $Y$ and show that the principal component of $Y$ is Gorenstein if and only if $m=n$.

Block Companion Singer Cycles, Primitive Recursive Vector Sequences, and Coprime Polynomial Pairs over Finite Fields

We discuss a conjecture concerning the enumeration of nonsingular matrices over a finite field that are block companion and whose order is the maximum possible in the corresponding general linear group. A special case is proved using some recent results on the probability that a pair of polynomials with coefficients in a finite field is coprime. Connection with an older problem of Niederreiter about the number of splitting subspaces of a given dimension are outlined and an asymptotic version of the conjectural formula is established. Some applications to the enumeration of nonsingular Toeplitz matrices of a given size over a finite field are also discussed.

Duals of Affine Grassmann Codes and their Relatives

Affine Grassmann codes are a variant of generalized Reed-Muller codes and are closely related to Grassmann codes. These codes were introduced in a recent work [2]. Here we consider, more generally, affine Grassmann codes of a given level. We explicitly determine the dual of an affine Grassmann code of any level and compute its minimum distance. Further, we ameliorate the results of [2] concerning the automorphism group of affine Grassmann codes. Finally, we prove that affine Grassmann codes and their duals have the property that they are linear codes generated by their minimum-weight codewords. This provides a clean analogue of a corresponding result for generalized Reed-Muller codes.

Primitive Polynomials, Singer Cycles, and Word-Oriented Linear Feedback Shift Registers

Using the structure of Singer cycles in general linear groups, we prove that a conjecture of Zeng, Han and He (2007) holds in the affirmative in a special case, and outline a plausible approach to prove it in the general case. This conjecture is about the number of primitive $σ$-LFSRs of a given order over a finite field, and it generalizes a known formula for the number of primitive LFSRs, which, in turn, is the number of primitive polynomials of a given degree over a finite field. Moreover, this conjecture is intimately related to an open question of Niederreiter (1995) on the enumeration of splitting subspaces of a given dimension.

Relatively Prime Polynomials and Nonsingular Hankel Matrices over Finite Fields

The probability for two monic polynomials of a positive degree n with coefficients in the finite field F_q to be relatively prime turns out to be identical with the probability for an n x n Hankel matrix over F_q to be nonsingular. Motivated by this, we give an explicit map from pairs of coprime polynomials to nonsingular Hankel matrices that explains this connection. A basic tool used here is the classical notion of Bezoutian of two polynomials. Moreover, we give simpler and direct proofs of the general formulae for the number of m-tuples of relatively prime polynomials over F_q of given degrees and for the number of n x n Hankel matrices over F_q of a given rank
