Indirect detection of Cosmological Constant from interacting open quantum system

We study the indirect detection of Cosmological Constant from an open quantum system of interacting spins, weakly interacting with a thermal bath, a massless scalar field minimally coupled with the static de Sitter background, by computing the spectroscopic shifts. By assuming pairwise interaction between spins, we construct states using a generalisation of the superposition principle. The corresponding spectroscopic shifts, caused by the effective Hamiltonian of the system due to Casimir Polder interaction, are seen to play a crucial role in predicting a very tiny value of the Cosmological Constant, in the static patch of de Sitter space, which is consistent with the observed value from the Planck measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies.

Relating the curvature of De Sitter Universe to Open Quantum Lamb Shift Spectroscopy

In this paper, we explore the connection between the curvature of the background De Sitter space-time with the spectroscopic study of entanglement of two atoms. Our set up is in the context of an Open Quantum System (OQS), where the two atoms, each having two energy levels and represented by Pauli spin tensor operators projected along any arbitrary direction. The system mimics the role of a pair of freely falling Unruh De-Witt detectors, which are allowed to non-adiabatically interact with a conformally coupled massless probe scalar field which has the role of background thermal bath. The effective dynamics of this combined system takes into account of the non-adiabatic interaction, which is commonly known as the Resonant Casimir Polder Interaction (RCPI) with the thermal bath. Our analysis reveals that the RCPI of two stable entangled atoms in the quantum vacuum states in OQS depends on the de Sitter space-time curvature relevant to the temperature of the thermal bath felt by the static observer. We also find that, in OQS, RCPI produces a new significant contribution appearing in the effective Hamiltonian of the total system and thermal bath under consideration. We find that the Lamb Shift is characterized by a decreasing inverse square power-law behavior, $L^{-2}$, when inter atomic Euclidean distance, $L$, is much larger than a characteristic length scale, $k$, which is the inverse surface gravity of the background De Sitter space. If the background space-time would have been Minkowskian this shift decreases as, $L^{-1}$, and is independent of temperature. Thus, we establish a connection between the curvature of the De Sitter space-time with the Lamb Shift spectroscopy.

Cosmological spectrum of two-point correlation function from vacuum fluctuation of Stringy Axion field in De Sitter space: A study of the role of Quantum Entanglement

In this work, we study the impact of quantum entanglement on the two-point correlation function and the associated primordial power spectrum of mean square vacuum fluctuation in a bipartite quantum field theoretic system. The field theory that we consider is the effective theory of axion field arising from Type IIB string theory compactified to four dimensions. We compute the expression for the power spectrum of vacuum fluctuation in three different approaches, namely (1) field operator expansion (FOE) technique with the quantum entangled state, (2) reduced density matrix (RDM) formalism with mixed quantum state and (3) the method of non-entangled state (NES). For massless axion field, in all these three formalism, we reproduce, at the leading order, the exact scale-invariant power spectrum which is well known in the literature. We observe that due to quantum entanglement, the sub-leading terms for these thee formalisms are different. Thus, such correction terms break the degeneracy among the analysis of the FOE, RDM and NES formalisms in the super-horizon limit. On the other hand, for massive axion field, we get a slight deviation from scale invariance and exactly quantify the spectral tilt of the power spectrum in small scales. Apart from that, for massless and massive axion field, we find distinguishable features of the power spectrum for the FOE, RDM, and NES on the large scales, which is the result of quantum entanglement. We also find that such large-scale effects are comparable to or greater than the curvature radius of the de Sitter space. Most importantly, in the near future, if experiments probe for early universe phenomena, one can detect such small quantum effects. In such a scenario, it is possible to test the implications of quantum entanglement in primordial cosmology.

Open Quantum Entanglement: A study of two atomic system in static patch of de Sitter space

In this work, our prime objective is to study non-locality and long-range effects of two-body correlation using quantum entanglement from the various information-theoretic measures in the static patch of de Sitter space using a two-body Open Quantum System (OQS). The OQS is described by a system of two entangled atoms, surrounded by a thermal bath, which is modelled by a massless probe scalar field. Firstly, we partially trace over the bath field and construct the Gorini Kossakowski Sudarshan Lindblad (GSKL) master equation, which describes the time evolution of the reduced subsystem density matrix. This GSKL master equation is characterized by two components, these are-Spin chain interaction Hamiltonian and the Lindbladian. To fix the form of both of them, we compute the Wightman functions for probe massless scalar field. Using this result along with the large time equilibrium behaviour we obtain the analytical solution for reduced density matrix. Further using this solution we evaluate various entanglement measures, namely Von-Neumann entropy, R$e'$nyi entropy, logarithmic negativity, entanglement of formation, concurrence and quantum discord for the two atomic subsystems on the static patch of De-Sitter space. Finally, we have studied the violation of Bell-CHSH inequality, which is the key ingredient to study non-locality in primordial cosmology.

COSMOS-${\it e}'$-GTachyon from String Theory

In this article, our prime objective is to study the inflationary paradigm from generalized tachyon (GTachyon) living on the world volume of a non-BPS string theory. The tachyon action is considered here is getting modified compared to the original action. One can quantify the amount of the modification via a power $q$ instead of $1/2$ in the effective action. Using this set up we study inflation from various types of tachyonic potentials, using which we constrain the index $q$ within, $1/2<q<2$, Regge slope $α^{'}$, string coupling constant $g_{s}$ and mass scale of tachyon $M_s$, from the recent Planck 2015 and Planck+BICEP2/Keck Array joint data. We explicitly study the inflationary consequences from single field, assisted field and multi-field tachyon set up. Specifically for single field and assisted field case we derive the results in the quasi-de-Sitter background in which we will utilize the details of cosmological perturbations and quantum fluctuations. Also we derive the expressions for all inflationary observables using any arbitrary vacuum and Bunch-Davies vacuum. For single field and assisted field case we derive-the inflationary flow equations, new sets of consistency relations. Also we derive the field excursion formula for tachyon, which shows that assisted inflation is in more safer side compared to the single field case to validate effective field theory framework. Further we study the features of CMB Angular power spectrum from TT, TE and EE correlations from scalar fluctuations within the allowed range of $q$ for each potentials from single field set-up. We also put constraints from the temperature anisotropy and polarization spectra, which shows that our analysis is consistent with the Planck 2015 data. Finally, using $δN$ formalism we derive the expressions for inflationary observables in the context of multi-field tachyons.

A note on Low Energy Effective Theory of Chromo Natural Inflation in the light of BICEP2 results

Recent result of BICEP2, revealing a larger value of tensor to scalar ratio (r), has opened up new investigations of the in ationary models to fit the experimental data. The experiment needs to reconfirm the results, specifically the consistency between Planck and BICEP2. On the other hand, the combined analysis of Planck and BICEP2 B, including the dust polarization uncertainty, brings down the upper limit on r. In this note, we reexamine the low energy effective theory of Chromo Natural In ation model and its generalization in view of such observational data. We find that the parameter space of the model admits a large value of r as well as other cosmological observables consistent with data.

A path integral approach to the Langevin equation

We study the Langevin equation with both a white noise and a colored noise. We construct the Lagrangian as well as the Hamiltonian for the generalized Langevin equation which leads naturally to a path integral description from first principles. This derivation clarifies the meaning of the additional fields introduced by Martin, Siggia and Rose in their functional formalism. We show that the transition amplitude, in this case, is the generating functional for correlation functions. We work out explicitly the correlation functions for the Markovian process of the Brownian motion of a free particle as well as for that of the non-Markovian process of the Brownian motion of a harmonic oscillator (Uhlenbeck-Ornstein model). The path integral description also leads to a simple derivation of the Fokker-Planck equation for the generalized Langevin equation.

Entanglement Temperature With Gauss-Bonnet Term

We compute the entanglement temperature using the first law-like of thermodynamics, $ΔE=T_{ent} ΔS_{EE}$, up to Gauss-Bonnet term in the Jacobson-Myers entropy functional in any arbitrary spacetime dimension. The computation is done when the entangling region is the geometry of a slab. We also show that such a Gauss-Bonnet term, which becomes a total derivative, when the co-dimension two hypersurface is four dimensional, does not contribute to the finite term in the entanglement entropy. We observe that the Weyl-squared term does not contribute to the entanglement entropy. It is important to note that the calculations are performed when the entangling region is very small and the energy is calculated using the normal Hamiltonian.

Post-Planck Dark Energy Constraints

We constrain plausible dark energy models, parametrized by multiple candidate equation of state, using the recently published Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) temperature anisotropy data from Planck together with the WMAP-9 low-$\ell$ polarization data and data from low redshift surveys. To circumvent the limitations of any particular equation of state towards describing all existing dark energy models, we work with three different equation of state covering a broader class of dark energy models and, hence, provide more robust and generic constraints on the dark energy properties. We show that a clear tension exists between dark energy constraints from CMB and non-CMB observations when one allows for dark energy models having both phantom and non-phantom behavior; while CMB is more favorable to phantom models, the low-z data prefers model with behavior close to a Cosmological Constant. Further, we reconstruct the equation of state of dark energy as a function of redshift using the results from combined CMB and non-CMB data and find that Cosmological Constant lies outside the 1$σ$ band for multiple dark energy models allowing phantom behavior. A considerable fine tuning is needed to keep models with strict non-phantom history inside 2$σ$ allowed range. This result might motivate one to construct phantom models of dark energy, which is achievable in the presence of higher derivative operators as in string theory. However, disallowing phantom behavior, based only on strong theoretical prior, leads to both CMB and non-CMB datasets agree on the nature of dark energy, with the mean equation of state being very close to the Cosmological Constant. Finally, to illustrate the impact of additional dark energy parameters on other cosmological parameters, we provide the cosmological parameter constraints for different dark energy models.

Cosmology With Axionic-quintessence Coupled with Dark Matter

We study the possibility of explaining the late time acceleration with an axion field which is coupled with the dark matter sector of the energy budget of the Universe. The axion field arises from the Ramond-Ramond sector of the Type-IIB string theory. We study the background evolution of the Universe as well as the growth of the matter perturbation in the linear regime. We subsequently use the observational data from Sn-Ia, BAO measurements, measurements of the Hubble parameter as well as the observational data for the growth of the matter perturbation to constrain our model. Our results show that coupled axion models are allowed to have larger deviation from cosmological constant by the present observational data.

Motion of a Test Particle in the Transverse space of Dp-Branes

We investigate the motion of a test particle in higher dimensions due to the presence of extended sources like D$p$-branes by studying the motion in the transverse space of the brane. This is contrasted with the motion of a point particle in the Schwarzschild background in higher dimensions. Since D$p$-branes are specific to 10-dimensional space time and exact solutions of geodesic equations for this particular space time has not been possible so far for the Schwarzschild background, we focus here to find the leading order solution of the geodesic equation (for motion of light rays). This enables us to compute the bending of light in both the backgrounds. We show that contrary to the well known result of no noncircular bound orbits for a massive particle, in Schwarzschild background, for $d\geq 5$, the $Dp$-brane background does allow bound elliptic motion only for $p = 6$ and the perihelion of the ellipse regresses instead of advancement. We also find that circular orbits for photon are allowed only for $p\le 3$.

Inflation with improved D3-brane potential and the fine tunings associated with the model

We investigate brane-antibrane inflation in a warped deformed conifold background that includes contributions to the potential arising from imaginary anti-self-dual (IASD) fluxes including the term with irrational scaling dimension discovered recently. We find that the model can give rise to required number of e-foldings; observational constraint on COBE normalization is easily satisfied and low value of the tensor to scalar ratio of perturbations is achieved. We observe that these corrections to the effective potential help in relaxing the severe fine tunings associated with the earlier analysis.

Newtonian Gravity and the Bargmann Algebra

We show how the Newton-Cartan formulation of Newtonian gravity can be obtained from gauging the Bargmann algebra, i.e., the centrally extended Galilean algebra. In this gauging procedure several curvature constraints are imposed. These convert the spatial (time) translational symmetries of the algebra into spatial (time) general coordinate transformations, and make the spin connection gauge fields dependent. In addition we require two independent Vielbein postulates for the temporal and spatial directions. In the final step we impose an additional curvature constraint to establish the connection with (on-shell) Newton-Cartan theory. We discuss a few extensions of our work that are relevant in the context of the AdS-CFT correspondence.

Observational Constraints on Axions as Quintessence in String Theory

We study the observational constraints for the axion models in string theory which can successfully act as quintessence. The evolution of the universe in this model is sensitive to the initial value of the axion field. This initial value of the axion field controls deviation of the cosmic evolution from the ΛCDM behaviour. We use the recent Union2 Supernova Type Ia dataset as well as the data from BAO measurements, the WMAP measurement of the shift parameter and the $H(z)$ measurements. Using these data, the reconstructed equation of state of the axion field has extremely small deviation from the cosmological constant ω= -1 even at 2σconfidence level. One interesting outcome of this analysis is that one can put bound on the SUSY breaking scale using cosmological measurements assuming the values of different string related parameters and vice versa.

Solar System Constraints on Scalar Tensor Theories with Non-Standard Action

We compute the Post-Newtonian parameter (PPN),$γ$, for scalar-tensor gravity theory when the action functional for the scalar field is a non-standard one, namely the Dirac-Born-Infeld (DBI) type action, used in the literature for a tachyon field. We investigate two different cases (Linear and conformal couplings) when the scalar field is non-minimally coupled to gravity via the scalar curvature. We find that the PPN parameter $γ$, which measures the amount of space curvature per unit rest mass, becomes a function of the effective mass of the scalar field. Using this PPN parameter, we calculate the time delay $Δτ$ for the signal to travel the round trip distance bertween a ground based antenna and a reflector placed in a spacecraft which is produced due to the grvitational field of Sun. We use this $Δτ$ to compare our result with that obtained by the Cassini mission and derive the constraints on the model parameters.

Axions as Quintessence in String Theory

We construct a model of quintessence in string theory based on the idea of axion monodromy as discussed by McAllister, Silverstein and Westphal arXiv:0808.0706. In the model, the quintessence field is an axion whose shift symmetry is broken by the presence of 5-branes which are placed in highly warped throats. This gives rise to a potential for the axion field which is slowly varying, even after incorporating the effects of moduli stabilization and supersymmetry breaking. We find that the resulting time dependence in the equation of state of Dark Energy is potentially detectable, depending on the initial conditions. The model has many very light extra particles which live in the highly warped throats, but these are hard to detect. A signal in the rotation of the CMB polarization can also possibly arise.

Bounds on Tensor wave and Twisted Inflation

We study the bounds on tensor wave in a class of twisted inflation models where $D(4+2k)$-branes are wrapped on cycles in the compact manifold and wrap the KK-direction in the corresponding effective field theory. While the lower bound is found to be analogous to that in Type IIB models of brane inflation, the upper bound turns out to be significantly different. This is argued for a range of values for the parameter $g_s M$ satisfying the self-consistency relation and the WMAP data. Further, we observe that the wrapped $D8$-brane appears to be the most attractive from a cosmological perspective.

Reheating the D-brane universe via instant preheating

We investigate a possibility of reheating in a scenario of D-brane inflation in a warped deformed conifold background which includes perturbative corrections to throat geometry sourced by chiral operator of dimension 3/2 in the CFT. The effective D-brane potential, in this case, belongs to the class of non-oscillatory models of inflation for which the conventional reheating mechanism does not work. We find that gravitational particle production is inefficient and leads to reheating temperature of the order of ${10^8} GeV$. We show that instant preheating is quite suitable to the present scenario and can easily reheat universe to a temperature which is higher by about three orders of magnitudes than its counter part associated with gravitational particle production. The reheating temperature is shown to be insensitive to a particular choice of inflationary parameters suitable to observations.

Warm tachyonic inflation in warped background

We analyze warm tachyonic inflation, proposed in the literature, but from the viewpoint of four dimensional effective action for tachyon field on a non-BPS D3-brane. We find that consistency with observational data on density perturbation and validity of effective action requires warped compactification. The number of background branes which source the flux is found to be of the order of 10 in contrast to the order of $10^{14}$ in the standard cold inflationary scenario.

Non-minimally Coupled Tachyonic Inflation in Warped String Background

We show that the non-minimal coupling of tachyon field to the scalar curvature, as proposed by Piao et al, with the chosen coupling parameter does not produce the effective potential where the tachyon field can roll down from T=0 to large $T$ along the slope of the potential. We find a correct choice of the parameters which ensures this requirement and support slow-roll inflation. However, we find that the cosmological parameter found from the analysis of the theory are not in the range obtained from observations. We then invoke warped compactification and varying dilaton field over the compact manifold, as proposed by Raeymaekers, to show that in such a setup the observed parameter space can be ensured.

Electromagnetic Strings: Complementarity between Time and Temperature

We investigate some of the intricate features in a gravity decoupling limit of a open bosonic string theory, in a constant electromagnetic (EM-) field. We explain the subtle nature of space-time at short distances, due to its entanglement with the gauge field windings in the theory. Incorporating the mass-shell condition in the theory, we show that the time coordinate is small, of the order of EM-string scale, and the space coordinates are large. We perform a careful analysis in the critical regime to describe the decoupling of a series of gauge-string windings in successions, just below the Hagedorn temperature. We argue for the condensation of gauge-string at the Hagedorn temperature, which is followed by the decoupling of tachyonic particles. We demonstrate the phenomena by revoking the effective noncommutative dynamics for the D(3)-brane and obtain nonlinear corrections to U(1) gauge theory. We discuss the spontaneous breaking of noncommutative U(1) symmetry and show that the Hagedorn phase is described by the noninteracting gauge particles. The notion of time reappears in the phase at the expense of temperature. It suggests a complementarity between two distinct notions, time and temperature, at short distances.

On the Cosmological Relevance of the Tachyon

We analyse of the effective action of the tachyon field on a D-brane, of both bosonic as well as superstring theory. We find that the non-standard kinetic term of the tachyon field requires a correction to the Born-Infeld type Lagrangian. The cosmological significance of the resulting dynamics is explored. We also examine if the rolling tachyon can provide an effective cosmological constant and contrast its behaviour with quintessence.

Antibracket as the Hamiltonian Structure of a classical integrable system

The time evolution in a supersymmetric extension of the Kodomtsev-Petviashvilli hierarchy, a classical integrable system, is shown to be Hamiltonian. The canonical bracket associated to the Hamiltonian evolution is the classical analog of the antibracket encountered in the quantization of gauge theories. This provides a new understanding of supersymmetric Hamiltonian systems.

Gelfand-Dikii Brackets for Nonstandard Supersymmetric Systems

We show how a general nonstandard Lax equation (supersymmetric or otherwise) can be expressed as a standard Lax equation. This enables us to define the Gelfand-Dikii brackets for a nonstandard supersymmetric equation. We discuss the Hamiltonian structures for the nonstandard super KP system and work out explicitly the two Hamiltonian structures of the supersymmetric Two Boson system from this point of view.

The Lax Operator Approach for the Virasoro and the W-Constraints in the Generalized KdV Hierarchy

We show directly in the Lax operator approach how the Virasoro and W-constraints on the $τ$-function arise in the $p$-reduced KP hierarchy or generalized KdV hierarchy. In partiacular, we consider the KdV and Boussinesq hierarchy to show that the Virasoro and W-constraints follow from the string equation by expanding the ``additional symmetry" operator in terms of the Lax operator. We also mention how this method could be generalized for higher KdV hierarchies.
