Herman Rings: Structure, Dynamics, and Open Problems

The existence of the Herman ring of a function adds interest and complexity to the dynamics of the function. We present a detailed and understandable summary of the core discoveries and recent developments on the Herman ring of rational and transcendental meromorphic functions. It is demonstrated that the Herman ring is intriguing on its own and valuable in terms of overall dynamics. Finally, the results and potential future research problems are briefly discussed.

Different types of wandering domains in the family $ λ+z+\tan z$

Dynamics of an one-parameter family of functions $f_λ(z)=λ+ z+\tan z, z \in \mathbb{C}$ and $λ\in \mathbb{C}$ with an unbounded set of singular values is investigated in this article. For $|2+λ^2|<1$, $λ=i$, $2+λ^2=e^{2πi α}$ for some rational number $α$ and for some bounded type irrational number $α$, the dynamics of $f_{λ+mπ}$ is determined for $m \in \mathbb{Z}\setminus\{0\}$. For such values of $λ$, the existence of $m$ many wandering domains of $f_{λ+mπ}$ with disjoint grand orbits in the lower half-plane are asserted along with a completely invariant Baker domain containing the upper half-plane. Further, each of such wandering domains is found to be simply connected, unbounded, and escaping. Different types of the internal behavior of $\{f^n_{λ+mπ}\}$ on such a wandering domain $W$ are highlighted for different values of $λ$. More precisely, for $\mid2+λ^2\mid<1$, it is manifested that the forward orbit of any point $z\in W$ stays away from the boundaries of $W_n$s. For $λ=i$, it is proved that $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}dist(f^n_{i+mπ}(z),\partial W_n)=0$ for all $z\in W$. Further, $\Im(f^n_{i+mπ}(z))\rightarrow -\infty$ as $n \rightarrow \infty$. For $2+λ^2=e^{2πiα}$ for some rational number $α$, $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}dist(f^n_{λ+mπ}(z),\partial W_n)=0$ is established for all $z\in W$. But, $\Im(f^n_{λ+mπ}(z))$ tends to a finite point for all $z\in W$ whenever $n \rightarrow \infty$. For $2+λ^2=e^{2πiα}$, $\liminf_{n\rightarrow \infty}dist(f^n_{λ+mπ}(z),\partial W_n)>0$ for all $z\in W$ and $dist(f^n_{λ+mπ}(z),f^n_{λ+mπ}(z')=dist(z,z')$ is authenticated for all $z,z'\in W$ and for some bounded type irrational number $α$.

Iteration of some topologically hyperbolic maps in the family $ λ+z+\tan z$

Iteration of the function $f_λ(z)=λ+ z+\tan z, z \in \mathbb{C}$ is investigated in this article. It is proved that for every $λ$, the Fatou set of $f_λ$ has a completely invariant Baker domain $B$; we call it the primary Fatou component. The rest of the results deals with $f_λ$ when it is topologically hyperbolic. For all real $λ$ or $λ$ such that $ λ=πk +i λ_2$ for some integer $k$ and $0 < λ_2<1$, the only other Fatou component is shown to be another completely invariant Baker domain. It is proved that if $|2+λ^2|<1$, then the Fatou set is the union of $B$ and infinitely many invariant attracting domains. Every such domain $U$ has exactly one invariant access to infinity and is unbounded in a special way; $\{\Im(z): z\in U\}$ is unbounded whereas $\{\Re(z): z\in U\}$ is bounded. If $\Im(λ)> \sqrt{2}+ \sinh^{-1}1$ then it is found that the primary Fatou component is the only Fatou component and the Julia set is disconnected. For every natural number $k$, the Fatou set of $f_λ$ for $λ=kπ+i\fracπ{2}$ is shown to contain $k$ wandering domains with distinct grand orbits. These wandering domains are found to be escaping. The Fatou set is the union of $B$, these wandering domains and their pre-images.

Rotation domains and Stable Baker omitted value

A Baker omitted value, in short \textit{bov} of a transcendental meromorphic function $f$ is an omitted value such that there is a disk $D$ centered at the bov for which each component of the boundary of $f^{-1}(D)$ is bounded. Assuming all the iterates $f^n$ are analytic in a neighborhood of its bov, this article proves that the number of Herman rings of a particular period is finite and every Julia component intersects the boundaries of at most finitely many Herman rings. Further, if the bov is the only limit point of the critical values then it is shown that $f$ has infinitely many repelling fixed points. If a repelling periodic point of period $p$ is on the boundary of a $p$-periodic rotation domain then the periodic point is shown to be on the boundary of infinitely many Fatou components. Under additional assumptions on the critical points, a sufficient condition is found for a Julia component to be singleton. As a consequence, it is proved that if the boundary of a wandering domain $W$ accumulates at some point of the plane under the iteration of $f$ then each limit of $f^n$ on $W$ is either a parabolic periodic point or in the $ω$-limit set of recurrent critical points. Using the same ideas, the boundary of rotation domains are shown to be in the $ω$-limit set of recurrent critical points.

On periods of Herman rings and relevant poles

Possible periods of Herman rings are studied for general meromorphic functions with at least one omitted value. A pole is called $H$-relevant for a Herman ring $H$ of such a function $f$ if it is surrounded by some Herman ring of the cycle containing $H$. In this article, a lower bound on the period $p$ of a Herman ring $H$ is found in terms of the number of $H$-relevant poles, say $h$. More precisely, it is shown that $p\geq \frac{h(h+1)}{2}$ whenever $f^j(H)$, for some $j$, surrounds a pole as well as the set of all omitted values of $f$. It is proved that $p \geq \frac{h(h+3)}{2}$ in the other situation. Sufficient conditions are found under which equalities hold. It is also proved that if an omitted value is contained in the closure of an invariant or a two periodic Fatou component then the function does not have any Herman ring.
