Deciphering the ~18 TeV photons from GRB 221009A

On 9 October, 2022, an extremely powerful gamma-ray burst, GRB 221009A, was detected by several instruments. Despite being obstructed by the Milky Way galaxy, its afterglow outburst outshone all other GRBs seen before. LHAASO detected several thousands very high energy photons extending up to 18 TeV. Detection of such energetic photons are unexpected due to the large opacity of the Universe. It is possible that in the afterglow epoch the intrinsic very high energy photon flux from the source might have increased manifolds, which could compensate the attenuation by pair-production with the extragalactic background light. We propose such a scenario and show that very high energy photons can be observed on the Earth from the interaction of very high energy protons with the seed synchrotron photons in the external forward shock region of the GRB jet.

Photohadronic interpretation of the different incarnation of 1ES 2344+514

Since its discovery in 1995, the high-energy peaked blazar 1ES 2344+514 has undergone several episodes of GeV-TeV flaring and has been observed in the multiwavelength by several other telescopes. The observed X-ray spectrum of 1996 and the flaring event of 2016 establish that 1ES 2344+514 has a temporary EHBL-like behavior. Such behavior has also been observed in several nearby high-energy peaked blazars. We use the photohadronic model to account for the GeV-TeV flaring observed events of 1995 and 2007. Also, a recently proposed two-zone photohadronic model, which is successful in explaining the multi-TeV flaring events of many transient EHBL-like source, is employed to explain the GeV-TeV flaring spectra of MJD 57611 and MJD 57612. We find that the zone-2 parameters of the two-zone photohadronic model play a central role in explaining these spectra. Probably this is an indication of a new type of transient EHBL-like source. We find that our fits to the observed spectra are comparable or better than the other leptonic and hadronic models employed in the literature to address the same issue.

Very high energy emission mechanism in the extreme blazar PGC 2402248

Extreme high-frequency peaked BL Lacs (EHBLs) are characterized by a synchrotron peak frequency exceeding $10^{17}$ Hz and a second peak that can be in the energy range of few GeVs to several TeVs. The MAGIC telescopes detected multi-TeV gamma-rays on April 19, 2018 for the first time from the EHBL PGC 2402248 which was simultaneously observed in multiwavelength by several other instruments. The broad band spectral energy distribution of the source is conventionally modelled using the leptonic and the hadronic models. Due to the success of the photohadronic model in interpreting the enigmatic very high-energy (VHE) flaring events from many high-energy blazars, we extend this model to explain the VHE events from PGC 2402248 observed by MAGIC telescopes and compare our results with other models. We conclude that the photohadronic fits are comparable and even fare better than most other models. Furthermore, we show that the spectrum is not hard and is in a low emission state. The estimated bulk Lorentz factor for this flaring event is found to be $\lesssim 34$.

Very High-energy Afterglow Emission of GRB 190829A: Evidence for Its Hadronic Origin?

The detection of multi-TeV gamma-rays from the afterglow phase of GRB 190829A by High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) telescope is an addition to the already existing list of two more GRBs observed in the very high energy (VHE) gamma-rays in recent years. Jets of blazars and GRBs have many similarities and the photohadronic model is very successful in explaining the VHE gamma-ray spectra from the high energy blazars. Recently, the photohadronic model has been successfully applied to study the sub-TeV gamma-rays from the afterglow phases of GRB 180720B and GRB 190114C. We employed this model again to explain the VHE spectra observed for the two consecutive nights from GRB 190829A. We show that the spectra of GRB 190829A can be due to the interactions of high energy protons with the synchrotron self-Compton photons in the forward shock region of the GRB jet, similar to the low emission state of the VHE flaring events of high energy blazars. We speculate that, if in future, it is possible to observe the VHE gamma-ray spectra from nearby GRBs in their afterglow phases, then some of them could only be explained by employing two different spectral indices. If confirmed, such VHE spectra could be interpreted as a result of the interactions of the high energy protons with the photons, both from the synchrotron background and the synchrotron self-Compton background in the forward shock region.

A two-zone photohadronic interpretation of the EHBL-like behavior of the 2016 multi-TeV flares of 1ES 1959+650

The high-energy-peaked blazar 1ES 1959+650 is a well-known and well studied nearby blazar that has undergone several episodes of multi-TeV flaring. In 2002 for the first time an orphan TeV flare was observed from this blazar. During a multiwavelength campaign between 29th April to 21st November 2016, MAGIC telescopes observed multi-TeV flarings during the nights of 13th, 14th June and 1st July 2016 when the position of the synchrotron peak was found to be above $10^{17}$ Hz. Also observed was that the second peak of the spectral energy distribution shifted towards higher energy, and exhibiting extreme HBL-like behavior. The photohadronic model which is very successful in explaning the multi-TeV flaring from many high energy blazars including 1ES 1959+650 is applied to study the flaring events of 2016. It is observed that the photohadronic model is unable to explain the observed spectra. Here, we use a two-zone photohadronic model to explain the observed spectra. We clearly demonstrate that the low energy regime (zone-1) of the spectra corresponds to the standard flaring events of the high energy blazar and the high energy regime (zone-2) of the spectra are solely due to the extreme nature of the flaring events. Our two-zone photohadronic model explains very well the multi-TeV flaring events observed by MAGIC telescopes.

Multi-TeV flaring from blazars: Markarian 421 a case study

The TeV blazar Markarian 421 underwent multi-TeV flaring during April 2004 and simultaneously observed in x-ray and TeV energies. It was observed that the TeV outbursts had no counterparts in the lower energies, which implies that this might be an orphan flare. In the context of hadronic model, we have shown that this multi-TeV flaring can be produced due to the interaction of Fermi-accelerated protons of energy $\lesssim 168$ TeV with the background photons in the low energy tail of the synchrotron self-Compton spectrum of the blazar jet. We fit very well the flaring spectrum with this model. Based on this study, we speculate that Mrk 501 and PG 1553+113 are possible candidates for orphan flaring in the future.

Black Ring and Kerr Ellipsoid - Solitonic Configurations in Modified Finsler Gravity

We study an effective Einstein-Finsler theory on tangent Lorentz bundle constructed as a "minimal" extension of general relativity. Black ring and Kerr like ellipsoid exact solutions and soliton configurations are presented. In this endeavor the relevant metric depends not only on four dimensional spacetime coordinates and also on velocity type variables that can be interpreted as additional coordinates in the space of "extra dimensions".

Extended Jackiw-Pi Model and Its Supersymmetrization

We present an extended version of the so-called Jackiw-Pi (JP) model in three dimensions, and perform its supersymmetrization. Our field content has three multiplets: (i) Yang-Mills vector multiplet $(A_μ^I, λ^I)$, (ii) Parity-odd extra vector multiplet $(B_μ^I, χ^I)$, and (iii) Scalar multiplet $(C^I, ρ^I, f^I)$. The bosonic fields in these multiplets are the same as the original JP-model, except for the auxiliary field $~f^I$ which is new, while the fermions $λ^I, χ^I$ and $ρ^I$ are their super-partners. The basic difference from the original JP-model is the presence of the kinetic term for $C^I$ with its modified field-strength $H_μ^I \equiv D_μC^I + m B_μ^I$. The inclusion of the $C^I$-kinetic term is to comply with the recently-developed tensor hierarchy formulation for supersymmetrization.

Non-Abelian Electric-Magnetic Duality with Supersymmetry in 4D and 10D

We present electric-magnetic (Hodge) duality formulation for non-Abelian gauge groups with N=1 supersymmetry in 3+1 (4D) dimensions. Our system consists of three multiplets: (i) A super-Yang-Mills vector multiplet (YMVM) $(A_μ^I, λ^I)$, (ii) a dual vector multiplet (DVM) $(B_μ^I, χ^I)$, and (iii) an unphysical tensor multiplet (TM) $(C_{μν}{}^I, ρ^I, φ^I)$, with the index I for adjoint representation. The multiplets YMVM and DVM are dual to each other like: $G_{μν}{}^I = (1/2) ε_{μν}{}^{ρσ} F_{ρσ}{}^I$. The TM is unphysical, but still plays an important role for establishing the total consistency of the system, based on recently-developed tensor-hierarchy formulation. We also apply this technique to non-Abelian electric-magnetic duality in 9+1 (10D) dimensions. The extra bosonic auxiliary field $K_{μ_1\cdotsμ_6}$ in 10D is shown to play an important role for the closure of supersymmetry on fields.

Metric-Independent Measures for Supersymmetric Extended Object Theories on Curved Backgrounds

For Green-Schwarz superstring sigma-model on curved backgrounds, we introduce a non-metric measure $Φ\equiv ε^{i j} ε^{I J} (\partial_i φ^I) (\partial_j φ^J)$ with two scalars $φ^I (I = 1, 2)$ used in Two Measure Theory (TMT). As in the flat-background case, the string tension $T= (2 πα' )^{-1}$ emerges as an integration constant for the A_i-field equation. This mechanism is further generalized to supermembrane theory, and to super p-brane theory, both on general curved backgrounds. This shows the universal applications of dynamical measure of TMT to general supersymmetric extended objects on general curved backgrounds.

Scale Symmetry Breaking From Total Derivative Densities and the Cosmological Constant Problem

The use in the action integral of totally divergent densities in generally coordinate invariant theories can lead to interesting mechanisms of spontaneous symmetry breaking of scale invariance. With dependence in the action on a metric independent density $Φ$, in $4D$ , we can define $Φ=\varepsilon^{μναβ}\partial_μA_{ναβ}$ that gives a new interesting mechanism for breaking scale symmetry in 4-D theories of gravity plus matter fields, through the $A_{ναβ}$ equations of motion which lead to an integration constant the breaks the scale symmetry, while introducing terms of the form $eG ln K$ , $e$ being the determinant of the vierbein, $G$ being the Gauss Bonnet scalar and $K$ being scalar functions of the fields transforming like $K \rightarrow cK $ (where c is a constant) under a scale transformation. Such a term is invariant only up to a total divergence and therefore leads to breaking of scale invariance due to gravitational instantons. The topological density constructed out of gauge field strengths $\varepsilon^{μναβ}F^a_{μν}F^a_{αβ}$ can be coupled to the dilaton field linearly to produce a scale invariant term up to a total divergence. The scale symmetry can be broken by Yang Mills instantons which lead to a very small vacuum energy for our Universe.

Detection of ultra high energy neutrinos by IceCube: Sterile neutrino scenario

The short-baseline neutrino oscillation experiments, the excess of radiation from the measurement of the cosmic microwave background radiation, the necessity of the nonbaryonic dark matter candidate and the depletion of the neutrino flux in IceCube all seem to hint at new physics beyond the standard model. An economical way to address these issues is to invoke the existence of sterile neutrinos. We present simple extensions of the standard model with additional three sterile neutrinos and discuss the corresponding PMNS like neutrino flavor mixing matrix. The noteworthy features of the sterile neutrino scenario advocated here is that the lightest one is almost degenerate with one of the active neutrinos, the second sterile has mass of order eV and the heaviest one is in the keV range. In the present scenario, the short baseline anomaly is explained through $Δm^2\sim 1\, {\rm eV^2}$, the depletion of muon neutrino flux in IceCube is explained through $Δm^2\sim 4.0\times 10^{-16}\, {\rm eV^2}$ and the dark matter problem is addressed through $Δm^2\sim 1\, {\rm keV^2}$. Our proposed mixing matrix is also compatible with the observed neutrino oscillation data. We show that the high energy muon and the tau neutrino fluxes from Gamma Ray Bursts can be depleted in IceCube by as much as 38% and 43% respectively. These substantial depletion in both muon and tau neutrino fluxes is due to their small but sizable mixing with the sterile neutrinos.

N=1 Supersymmetric Non-Abelian Compensator Mechanism for Extra Vector Multiplet

We present a variant formulation of N=1 supersymmetric compensator mechanism for an arbitrary non-Abelian group in four dimensions. This formulation resembles our previous variant supersymmetric compensator mechanism in 4D. Our field content consists of the three multiplets: (i) A Non-Abelian Yang-Mills multiplet (A_μ^I, λ^I, C_{μνρ}^I), (ii) a tensor multiplet (B_{μν}^I, χ^I, φ^I) and an extra vector multiplet (K_μ^I, ρ^I, C_{μνρ}^I) with the index I for the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian gauge group. The C_{μνρ}^I is originally an auxiliary field dual to the conventional auxiliary field D^I for the extra vector multiplet. The vector K_μ^I and the tensor C_{μνρ}^I get massive, after absorbing respectively the scalar φ^I and the tensor B_{μν}^I. The superpartner fermion ρ^I acquires a Dirac mass shared with χ^I. We fix all non-trivial cubic interactions in the total lagrangian, all quadratic terms in supersymmetry transformations, and all quadratic interactions in field equations. The action invariance and the super-covariance of all field equations are confirmed up to the corresponding orders.

Variant N= 1 Supersymmetric Non-Abelian Proca-Stueckelberg Formalism in Four Dimensions

We present a new (variant) formulation of N=1 supersymmetric compensator mechanism for an arbitrary non-Abelian group in four dimensions. We call this `variant supersymmetric non-Abelian Proca-Stueckelberg formalism'. Our field content is economical, consisting only of the two multiplets: (i) A Non-Abelian vector multiplet (A_μ^I, λ^I, C_{μνρ}{}^I) and (ii) A compensator tensor multiplet (B_{μν}{}^I, χ^I, φ^I). The index I is for the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian gauge group. The C_{μνρ}{}^I is originally an auxiliary field Hodge-dual to the conventional auxiliary field D^I. The φ^I and B_{μν}{}^I are compensator fields absorbed respectively into the longitudinal components of A_μ^I and C_{μνρ}{}^I which become massive. After the absorption, C_{μνρ}{}^I becomes no longer auxiliary, but starts propagating as a massive scalar field. We fix all non-trivial cubic interactions in the total lagrangian, and quadratic interactions in all field equations. The superpartner fermion χ^I acquires a Dirac mass shared with the gaugino λ^I. As an independent confirmation, we give the superspace re-formulation of the component results.

N=1 Non-Abelian Tensor Multiplet in Four Dimensions

We carry out the N=1 supersymmetrization of a physical non-Abelian tensor with non-trivial consistent couplings in four dimensions. Our system has three multiplets: (i) The usual non-Abelian vector multiplet (VM) (A_μ^I, λ^I), (ii) A non-Abelian tensor multiplet (TM) (B_{μν}{}^I, χ^I, φ^I), and (iii) A compensator vector multiplet (CVM) (C_μ^I, ρ^I). All of these multiplets are in the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian group G. Unlike topological theory, all of our fields are propagating with kinetic terms. The C_μ^I-field plays the role of a Stueckelberg compensator absorbed into the longitudinal component of B_{μν}{}^I. We give not only the component lagrangian, but also a corresponding superspace reformulation, reconfirming the total consistency of the system. The adjoint representation of the TM and CVM is further generalized to an arbitrary real representation of general SO(N) gauge group. We also couple the globally N=1 supersymmetric system to supergravity, as an additional non-trivial confirmation.

Self-dual non-Abelian N = 1 tensor multiplet in D = 2+ 2 dimensions

We present a self-dual non-Abelian N=1 supersymmetric tensor multiplet in D=2+2 space-time dimensions. Our system has three on-shell multiplets: (i) The usual non-Abelian Yang-Mills multiplet (A_μ^I, λ^I) (ii) A non-Abelian tensor multiplet (B_{μν}{}^I, χ^I, φ^I), and (iii) An extra compensator vector multiplet (C_μ^I, ρ^I). Here the index I is for the adjoint representation of a non-Abelian gauge group. The duality symmetry relations are G_{μνρ}{}^I = - ε_{μνρ}{}^σ\nabla_σφ^I, F_{μν}{}^I = + (1/2) ε_{μν}{}^{ρσ} F_{ρσ}{}^I, and H_{μν}{}^I = +(1/2) ε_{μν}{ρσ} H_{ρσ}{}^I, where G and H are respectively the field strengths of B and C. The usual problem with the coupling of the non-Abelian tensor is avoided by non-trivial Chern-Simons terms in the field strengths G_{μνρ}{}^I and H_{μν}{}^I. For an independent confirmation, we re-formulate the component results in superspace. As applications of embedding integrable systems, we show how the {\cal N} = 2, r = 3 and {\cal N} = 3, r = 4 flows of generalized Korteweg-de Vries equations are embedded into our system.

Self-Dual Yang-Mills and Vector-Spinor Fields, Nilpotent Fermionic Symmetry, and Supersymmetric Integrable Systems

We present a system of a self-dual Yang-Mills field and a self-dual vector-spinor field with nilpotent fermionic symmetry (but not supersymmetry) in 2+2 dimensions, that generates supersymmetric integrable systems in lower dimensions. Our field content is (A_μ^I, ψ_μ^I, χ^{I J}), where I and J are the adjoint indices of arbitrary gauge group. The χ^{I J} is a Stueckelberg field for consistency. The system has local nilpotent fermionic symmetry with the algebra \{N_α^I, N_β^J \} = 0. This system generates supersymmetric Kadomtsev-Petviashvili equations in D=2+1, and supersymmetric Korteweg-de Vries equations in D=1+1 after appropriate dimensional reductions. We also show that a similar self-dual system in seven dimensions generates self-dual system in four dimensions. Based on our results we conjecture that lower-dimensional supersymmetric integral models can be generated by non-supersymmetric self-dual systems in higher dimensions only with nilpotent fermionic symmetries.

Triality and Bagger-Lambert Theory

We present two alternative field contents for Bagger-Lambert theory, based on the triality of SO(8). The first content is (φ_{A a}, χ_{\dot A a} ; A_\m{}^{a b}), where the bosonic field φis in the 8_S of SO(8) instead of the 8_V as in the original Bagger-Lambert formulation. The second field content is (φ_{\dot A a}, χ^I{}_a ; A_\m{}^{a b}), where the bosonic field φand the fermionic field χare respectively in the 8_C and 8_V of SO(8). In both of these field contents, the bosonic potentials are positive definite, as desired. Moreover, these bosonic potentials can be unified by the triality of SO(8). To this end, we see a special constant matrix as a product of two SO(8) generators playing an important role, relating the 8_V, 8_S and 8_C of SO(8) for the triality. As an important application, we give the supersymmetry transformation rule for N=6 superconformal Chern-Simons theory with the supersymmetry parameter in the 6 of SO(6), obtained by the truncation of our first field content.

Octonions, G_2 Symmetry, Generalized Self-Duality and Supersymmetries in Dimensions D \le 8

We establish N=(1/8,1) supersymmetric Yang-Mills vector multiplet with generalized self-duality in Euclidian eight-dimensions with the original full SO(8) Lorentz covariance reduced to SO(7). The key ingredient is the usage of octonion structure constants made compatible with SO(7) covariance and chirality in 8D. By a simple dimensional reduction together with extra constraints, we derive N=1/8+7/8 supersymmetric self-dual vector multiplet in 7D with the full SO(7) Lorentz covariance reduced to G_2. We find that extra constraints needed on fields and supersymmetry parameter are not obtained from a simple dimensional reduction from 8D. We conjecture that other self-dual supersymmetric theories in lower dimensions D =6 and 4 with respective reduced global Lorentz covariances such as SU(3) \subset SO(6) and SU(2) \subset SO(4) can be obtained in a similar fashion.

Noncommutative Self-Dual Supersymmetric Yang-Mills Theory

We formulate noncommutative self-dual N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory in D=2+2 dimensions. As in the corresponding commutative case, this theory can serve as the possible master theory of all the noncommutative supersymmetric integrable models in lower dimensions. As a by-product, noncommutative self-dual N=2 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theory is obtained in D=2+2. We also perform a dimensional reduction of the N=2 theory further into N=(2,2) in D=1+1, as a basis for more general future applications. As a typical example, we show how noncommutative integrable matrix N=(1,0) supersymmetric KdV equations in D=1+1 arise from this theory, via the Yang-Mills gauge groups GL(n, R) or SL(2n, R).

Self-Dual N=(1,0) Supergravity in Eight Dimensions with Reduced Holonomy Spin(7)

We construct chiral N=(1,0) self-dual supergravity in Euclidean eight-dimensions with reduced holonomy Spin(7), including all the higher-order interactions in a closed form. We first establish the non-chiral N=(1,1) superspace supergravity in eight-dimensions with SO(8) holonomy without self-duality, as the foundation of the formulation. In order to make the whole computation simple, and the generalized self-duality compatible with supersymmetry, we adopt a particular set of superspace constraints similar to the one originally developed in ten-dimensional superspace. The intrinsic properties of octonionic structure constants make local supersymmetry, generalized self-duality condition, and reduced holonomy Spin(7) all consistent with each other.

Supermembrane with Non-Abelilan Gauging and Chern-Simons Quantization

We present non-Abelian gaugings of supermembrane for general isometries for compactifications from eleven-dimensions, starting with Abelian case as a guide. We introduce a super Killing vector in eleven-dimensional superspace for a non-Abelian group G associated with the compact space B for a general compactification, and couple it to a non-Abelian gauge field on the world-volume. As a technical tool, we use teleparallel superspace with no manifest local Lorentz covariance. Interestingly, the coupling constant is quantized for the non-Abelian group G, due to its generally non-trivial mapping π_3(G).

Gauged N=2 Supergravity in Nine-Dimensions and Domain Wall Solutions

We present massive N=2 supergravity with SO(2)-gauging in nine-dimensions by direct construction. A full lagrangian and transformation rules are fixed, respectively up to quartic and quadratic fermion terms. Corresponding to the generalized Scherk-Schwarz dimensional reduction utilizing SL(2,R) symmetry, this theory allows three arbitrary mass parameters m_0, m_1and m_2 in addition to the minimal gauge coupling g, so that our system has the most general form compared with other results in the past. Unlike ordinary gauged maximal supergravity theories in other dimensions, the scalar potential is positive definite for arbitrary values of the mass parameters. As an application, we also analyze the stability and supersymmetry for 7-brane domain wall solutions for this gauged maximal supergravity, keeping the three mass parameters.

Generalized BF Theory in Superspace as Underlying Theory of 11D Supergravity

We construct a generalized BF theory in superspace that can embed eleven-dimensional supergravity theory. Our topological BF theory can accommodate all the necessary Bianchi identities for teleparallel superspace supergravity in eleven-dimensions, as the simplest but nontrivial solutions to superfield equations for our superspace action. This indicates that our theory may have solutions other than eleven-dimensional supergravity, accommodating generalized theories of eleven-dimensional supergravity. Therefore our topological theory can be a good candidate for the low energy limit of M-theory, as an underlying fundamental theory providing a `missing link' between eleven-dimensional supergravity and M-theory.

Teleparallel Complex Gravity as Foundation for Noncommutative Gravity

We present a teleparallel complex gravity as the foundation for the formulation of noncommutative gravity theory. The negative energy ghosts in the conventional formulation with U(1,3) local Lorentz connection no longer exists, since the local Lorentz invariance is broken down to U(1,3) global Lorentz symmetry. As desired, our teleparallel complex gravity theory also passes the key classical test of perihelion advance of Mercury. Based on this result, we present a lagrangian for the noncommutative teleparallel gravity theory.

Alternative N=2 Supergravity in Five Dimensions with Singularities

We present an alternative N=2 supergravity multiplet coupled to n copies of vector multiplets and n' copies of hypermultiplets in five dimensions. Our supergravity multiplet contains a single antisymmetric tensor and a dilaton, which are natural Neveu-Schwarz massless fields in superstring theory. The absence of the explicit Chern-Simons terms in our lagrangian deletes the non-trivial constraints on the couplings of vector multiplets in the conventional formulation. The scalars in the vector multiplets form the sigma-model for the coset SO(n,1) / SO(n), like those in the vector multiplets coupled to N=1 supergravity in nine dimensions, while the scalars in the hypermultiplets form that for the quaternionic Kahler manifold Sp(n',1) / Sp(n') X Sp(1). We also perform the gauging of the SO(2) subgroup of the Sp(1) = SL(2,R) automorphism group of N=2 supersymmetry. Our result is also generalized to singular 5D space-time as in the conventional formulation, as a preliminary for supersymmetric Randall-Sundrum brane world scenario.
