D-brane Potentials in the Warped Resolved Conifold and Natural Inflation

In this paper we obtain a model of Natural Inflation from string theory with a Planckian decay constant. We investigate D-brane dynamics in the background of the warped resolved conifold (WRC) throat approximation of Type IIB string compactifications on Calabi-Yau manifolds. When we glue the throat to a compact bulk Calabi-Yau, we generate a D-brane potential which is a solution to the Laplace equation on the resolved conifold. We can exactly solve this equation, including dependence on the angular coordinates. The solutions are valid down to the tip of the resolved conifold, which is not the case for the more commonly used deformed conifold. This allows us to exploit the effect of the warping, which is strongest at the tip. We inflate near the tip using an angular coordinate of a D5-brane in the WRC which has a discrete shift symmetry, and feels a cosine potential, giving us a model of Natural Inflation, from which it is possible to get a Planckian decay constant whilst maintaining control over the backreaction. This is because the decay constant for a wrapped brane contains powers of the warp factor, and so can be made large, while the wrapping parameter can be kept small enough so that backreaction is under control.

Generating the cosmic microwave background power asymmetry with $g_{NL}$

We consider a higher order term in the $δN$ expansion for the CMB power asymmetry generated by a superhorizon isocurvature field fluctuation. The term can generate the asymmetry without requiring a large value of $f_{NL}$. Instead it produces a non-zero value of $g_{NL}$. A combination of constraints lead to an allowed region in $f_{NL}-g_{NL}$ space. To produce the asymmetry with this term without a large value of $f_{NL}$ we find that the isocurvature field needs to contribute less than the inflaton towards the power spectrum of the curvature perturbation.

Non-topological Cycloops

We propose a mechanism for the creation of cosmic string loops with dynamically stabilised windings in the internal space. Assuming a velocity correlations regime in the post-inflationary epoch, such windings are seen to arise naturally in string networks prior to loop formation. The angular momentum of the string in the compact space may then be sufficient to ensure that the windings remain stable after the loop chops off from the network, even if the internal manifold is simply connected. For concreteness we embed our model in the Klebanov-Strassler geometry, which provides a natural mechanism for brane inflation, as well a being one of the best understood compactification schemes in type IIB string theory. We see that the interaction of angular momentum with the string tension causes the loop to oscillate between phases of expansion and contraction. This, in principle, should give rise to a distinct gravitational wave signature, the future detection of which could provide indirect evidence for the existence of extra dimensions.

Direct Mediation and Metastable Supersymmetry Breaking for SO(10)

We examine a metastable $\mathcal{N}=1$ Macroscopic SO(N) SQCD model of Intriligator, Seiberg and Shih (ISS). We introduce various baryon and meson deformations, including multitrace operators and explore embedding an SO(10) parent of the standard model into two weakly gauged flavour sectors. Direct fundamental messengers and the symmetric pseudo-modulus messenger mediate SUSY breaking to the MSSM. Gaugino and sfermion masses are computed and compared for each deformation type. We also explore reducing the rank of the magnetic quark matrix of the ISS model and find an additional fundamental messenger.

Maxwell-Chern-Simons Vortices and Holographic Superconductors

We investigate probe limit vortex solutions of a charged scalar field in Einstein-Maxwell theory in 3+1 dimensions, for an asymptotically AdS Schwarzschild black hole metric with the addition of an axionic coupling to the Maxwell field. We show that the inclusion of such a term, together with a suitable potential for the axion field, can induce an effective Chern-Simons term on the 2+1 dimensional boundary. We obtain numerical solutions of the equations of motion and find Maxwell-Chern-Simons like magnetic vortex configurations, where the magnetic field profile varies with the size of the effective Chern-Simons coupling. The axion field has a non-trivial profile inside the AdS bulk but does not condense at spatial infinity.

Non Abelian Geometrical Tachyon

We investigate the dynamics of a pair of coincident D5 branes in the background of $k$ NS5 branes. It has been proposed by Kutasov that the system with a single probing D-brane moving radially in this background is dual to the tachyonic DBI action for a non-BPS Dp brane. We extend this proposal to the non-abelian case and find that the duality still holds provided one promotes the radial direction to a matrix valued field associated with a non-abelian geometric tachyon and a particular parametrization for the transverse scalar fields is chosen. The equations of motion of a pair of coincident D5 branes moving in the NS5 background are determined. Analytic and numerical solutions for the pair are found in certain simplified cases in which the U(2) symmetry is broken to $U(1) \times U(1)$ corresponding to a small transverse separation of the pair. For certain range of parameters these solutions describe periodic motion of the centre of mass of the pair 'bouncing off' a finite sized throat whose minimum size is limited by the D5 branes separation.

String Necklaces and Primordial Black Holes from Type IIB Strings

We consider a model of static cosmic string loops in type IIB string theory, where the strings wrap cycles within the internal space. The strings are not topologically stabilised, however the presence of a lifting potential traps the windings giving rise to kinky cycloops. We find that PBH formation occurs at early times in a small window, whilst at late times we observe the formation of dark matter relics in the scaling regime. This is in stark contrast to previous predictions based on field theoretic models. We also consider the PBH contribution to the mass density of the universe, and use the experimental data to impose bounds on the string theory parameters.

Dirac-Born-Infeld actions and Tachyon Monopoles

We investigate magnetic monopole solutions of the non-abelian DBI action describing 2 coincident non-BPS D9-branes in flat space. Just as in the case of kink and vortex solitonic tachyon solutions of the full DBI non-BPS actions, as previously analyzed by Sen, these monopole configurations are singular in the first instance and require regularization. We discuss a suitable non-abelian ansatz and show it solves the equations of motion to leading order in the regularization parameter. Fluctuations are studied and shown to describe a codimension 3 BPS D6-brane. A formula is derived for its tension. We comment on the implication to our results from both the trace (Tr) and symmetrized trace (Str) prescriptions of the non-abelian DBI action of coincident non-BPS D9-branes.

Near-Infrared Photometry of the Type IIn SN 2005ip: The Case for Dust Condensation

Near-infrared photometric observations of the Type IIn SN 2005ip in NGC 2906 reveal large fluxes (>1.3 mJy) in the K_s-band over more than 900 days. While warm dust can explain the late-time K_s-band emission of SN 2005ip, the nature of the dust heating source is ambiguous. Shock heating of pre-existing dust by post-shocked gas is unlikely because the forward shock is moving too slowly to have traversed the expected dust-free cavity by the time observations first reveal the K_s emission. While an infrared light echo model correctly predicts a near-infrared luminosity plateau, heating dust to the observed temperatures of ~1400-1600 K at a relatively large distance from the supernova (> 10^{18} cm) requires an extraordinarily high early supernova luminosity (~1 X 10^{11} L_solar). The evidence instead favors condensing dust in the cool, dense shell between the forward and reverse shocks. Both the initial dust temperature and the evolutionary trend towards lower temperatures are consistent with this scenario. We infer that radiation from the circumstellar interaction heats the dust. While this paper includes no spectroscopic confirmation, the photometry is comparable to other SNe that do show spectroscopic evidence for dust formation. Observations of dust formation in SNe are sparse, so these results provide a rare opportunity to consider SNe Type IIn as dust sources.

Phase Transitions in Separated $D_{p-1}$ and anti-$D_{p-1}$ Branes at Finite Temperature

We consider a pair of parallel ${\rm D}_{p-1}$ and anti-${\rm D}_{p-1}$ branes in flat space, with a finite separation $d$ along some perpendicular spatial direction and at finite temperature. If this spatial direction is compactified on a circle then by T-duality, the system is equivalent to a ${\rm D}_{p}$-anti ${\rm D}_{p} $ pair wrapped around the dual circle with a constant Wilson line $A \approx d $ on one of the branes. We focus in particular on the $p=9$ case and compute the free energy of this system and study the occurrence of second order phase transitions as both the temperature and Wilson line (brane-antibrane separation) are varied. In the limit of vanishing Wilson line we recover the previous results obtained in the literature, whereby the open string vacuum at the origin of the tachyon field T=0 is stabilized at sufficiently high temperature at which a second order phase transition occurs. For sufficiently large Wilson line, we find new second order phase transitions corresponding to the existence of two minima in the tachyon effective potential at finite temperature and tachyon field value. Entropic arguments suggest that as the system cools, the tachyon is likely to find itself in the minimum that approaches infinity as the temperature vanishes (i.e. the one corresponding to the closed string vacuum), rather than the minimum at T=0 (corresponding to the open string vacuum).

Electrified Fuzzy Spheres and Funnels in Curved Backgrounds

We use the non-Abelian DBI action to study the dynamics of $N$ coincident $Dp$-branes in an arbitrary curved background, with the presence of a homogenous world-volume electric field. The solutions are natural extensions of those without electric fields, and imply that the spheres will collapse toward zero size. We then go on to consider the $D1-D3$ intersection in a curved background and find various dualities and automorphisms of the general equations of motion. It is possible to map the dynamical equation of motion to the static one via Wick rotation, however the additional spatial dependence of the metric prevents this mapping from being invertible. Instead we find that a double Wick rotation leaves the static equation invariant. This is very different from the behaviour in Minkowski space. We go on to construct the most general static fuzzy funnel solutions for an arbitrary metric either by solving the static equations of motion, or by finding configurations which minimise the energy. As a consistency check we construct the Abelian $D3$-brane world-volume theory in the same generic background and find solutions consistent with energy minimisation. In the $NS$5-brane background we find time dependent solutions to the equations of motion, representing a time dependent fuzzy funnel. These solutions match those obtained from the $D$-string picture to leading order suggesting that the action in the large $N$ limit does not need corrections. We conclude by generalising our solutions to higher dimensional fuzzy funnels.

Geometrical Tachyon Kinks and NS5 Branes

We further investigate the $NS$5 ring background using the tachyon map. Mapping the radion fields to the rolling tachyon helps to explain the motion of a probe $Dp$-brane in this background. It turns out that the radion field becomes tachyonic when the brane is confined to one dimensional motion inside the ring. We find explicit solutions for the geometrical tachyon field that describe stable kink solutions which are similar to those of the open string tachyon. Interestingly in the case of the geometric tachyon, the dynamics is controlled by a cosine potential. In addition, we couple a constant electric field to the probe-brane, but find that the only stable kink solutions occur when there is zero electric field or a critical field value. We also investigate the behaviour of Non-BPS branes in this background, and find that the end state of any probe brane is that of tachyonic matter 'trapped' around the interior of the ring. We conclude by considering compactification of the ring solution in one of the transverse directions.

Inflation from Geometrical Tachyons

We propose an alternative formulation of tachyon inflation using the geometrical tachyon arising from the time dependent motion of a BPS $D3$-brane in the background geometry due to $k$ parallel $NS$5-branes arranged around a ring of radius $R $. Due to the fact that the mass of this geometrical tachyon field is $\sqrt{2/k} $ times smaller than the corresponding open-string tachyon mass, we find that the slow roll conditions for inflation and the number of e-foldings can be satisfied in a manner that is consistent with an effective 4-dimensional model and with a perturbative string coupling. We also show that the metric perturbations produced at the end of inflation can be sufficiently small and do not lead to the inconsistencies that plague the open string tachyon models. Finally we argue for the existence of a minimum of the geometrical tachyon potential which could give rise to a traditional reheating mechanism.

D-Brane Dynamics and NS5 Rings

We consider the classical motion of a probe D-brane moving in the background geometry of a ring of NS5 branes, assuming that the latter are non-dynamical. We analyse the solutions to the Dirac-Born-Infield (DBI) action governing the approximate dynamics of the system. In the near horizon (throat) approximation we find several exact solutions for the probe brane motion. These are compared to numerical solutions obtained in more general cases. One solution of particular interest is when the probe undergoes oscillatory motion through the centre of the ring (and perpendicular to it). By taking the ring radius sufficiently large, this solution should remain stable to any stringy corrections coming from open-strings stretching between the probe and the NS5-branes along the ring.

Domain walls in five dimensional supergravity with non-trivial hypermultiplets

We study BPS domain wall solutions of 5-dimensional N=2 supergravity where isometries of the hypermultiplet geometry have been gauged. We derive the corresponding supersymmetric flow equations and define an appropriate c-function. As an example we discuss a domain wall solution of Freedman, Gubser, Pilch and Warner which is related to a RG-flow in a dual superconformal field theory.

Beyond the Standard Embedding in M-Theory on S^1/Z_2

In this paper we discuss compactifications of M-theory to four dimensions on X \times S^1/Z_2, in which nonstandard embeddings in the E_8 \times E_8 vacuum gauge bundle are considered. At the level of the effective field theory description of Horava and Witten, this provides a natural extension of well known results at weak coupling, to strongly coupled E_8 \times E_8 heterotic strings. As an application of our results, we discuss models which exhibit an anomalous U(1)_A symmetry in four dimensions, and show how this emerges from the reduction of the d = 11 toplogical term C \wedge G \wedge G, and how it is consistent with d = 4 anomaly cancellation in M-theory. As a further application of nonstandard embeddings, we show how it is possible to obtain an inverse hierarchy of gauge couplings, where the observable sector is more strongly coupled than the hidden one. The basic construction and phenomenological viability of these scenarios is demonstrated.

Conformal Models of Magnetohydrodynamic Turbulence

Following the previous work of Ferretti and Yang on the role of magnetic fields in the theory of conformal turbulence, we show that non-unitary minimal model solutions to 2-dimensional magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) obtained by dimensional reduction from 3-dimensions exist under different (and more restrictive) conditions. From a 3-dimensional point of view, these conditions are equivalent to perpendicular flow, in which the magnetic and velocity fields are orthogonal. We also extend the analysis to the finite conductivity case and present some approximate solutions, whose connection to the exact ones of the infinite conductivity case is also discussed.

Perturbing Conformal Turbulence

We consider perturbations of the non-unitary minimal model solutions of two-dimensional conformal turbulence proposed by Polyakov. Demanding the absence of non-integrable singularities in the resulting theories leads to constraints on the dimension of the perturbing operator. We give some general solutions of these constraints, illustrating with examples of specific models. We also examine the effect of such perturbations on the Hopf equation and derive the interesting result that the latter is invariant under a certain class of perturbations, to first order in perturbation theory, examples of which are given in specific cases.
