Essential holonomy of Cantor actions

A group action has essential holonomy if the set of points with non-trivial holonomy has positive measure. If such an action is topologically free, then having essential holonomy is equivalent to the action not being essentially free, which means that the set of points with non-trivial stabilizer has positive measure. In this paper, we investigate the relation between the property of having essential holonomy and structure of the acting group for minimal equicontinuous actions on Cantor sets. We show that if such a group action is locally quasi-analytic and has essential holonomy, then every commutator subgroup in the group lower central series has elements with positive measure set of points with non-trivial holonomy. In particular, this gives a new proof that a minimal equicontinuous Cantor action by a nilpotent group has no essential holonomy. We also show that the property of having essential holonomy is preserved under return equivalence and continuous orbit equivalence of minimal equicontinuous Cantor actions. Finally, we give examples to show that the assumption on the action that it is locally quasi-analytic is necessary.

Limit group invariants for non-free Cantor actions

A Cantor action is a minimal equicontinuous action of a countably generated group G on a Cantor space X. Such actions are also called generalized odometers in the literature. In this work, we introduce two new conjugacy invariants for Cantor actions, the stabilizer limit group and the centralizer limit group. An action is wild if the stabilizer limit group is an increasing sequence of stabilizer groups without bound, and otherwise is said to be stable if this group chain is bounded. For Cantor actions by a finitely generated group G, we prove that stable actions satisfy a rigidity principle, and furthermore show that the wild property is an invariant of the continuous orbit equivalence class of the action. A Cantor action is said to be dynamically wild if it is wild, and the centralizer limit group is a proper subgroup of the stabilizer limit group. This property is also a conjugacy invariant, and we show that a Cantor action with a non-Hausdorff element must be dynamically wild. We then give examples of wild Cantor actions with non-Hausdorff elements, using recursive methods from Geometric Group Theory to define actions on the boundaries of trees.

Aperiodicity at the boundary of chaos

We consider the dynamical properties of $C^{\infty}$-variations of the flow on an aperiodic Kuperberg plug ${\mathbb K}$. Our main result is that there exists a smooth 1-parameter family of plugs ${\mathbb K}_ε$ for $ε\in (-a,a)$ and $a<1$, such that: (1) The plug ${\mathbb K}_0 = {\mathbb K}$ is a generic Kuperberg plug; (2) For $ε<0$, the flow in the plug ${\mathbb K}_ε$ has two periodic orbits that bound an invariant cylinder, all other orbits of the flow are wandering, and the flow has topological entropy zero; (3) For $ε> 0$, the flow in the plug ${\mathbb K}_ε$ has positive topological entropy, and an abundance of periodic orbits.

Growth and homogeneity of matchbox manifolds

A matchbox manifold with one-dimensional leaves which has equicontinuous holonomy dynamics must be a homogeneous space, and so must be homeomorphic to a classical Vietoris solenoid. In this work, we consider the problem, what can be said about a matchbox manifold with equicontinuous holonomy dynamics, and all of whose leaves have at most polynomial growth type? We show that such a space must have a finite covering for which the global holonomy group of its foliation is nilpotent. As a consequence, we show that if the growth type of the leaves is polynomial of degree at most 3, then there exists a finite covering which is homogeneous. If the growth type of the leaves is polynomial of degree at least 4, then there are additional obstructions to homogeneity, which arise from the structure of nilpotent groups.

Perspectives on Kuperberg flows

The "Seifert Conjecture" asks, "Does every non-singular vector field on the 3-sphere ${\mathbb S}^3$ have a periodic orbit?" In a celebrated work, Krystyna Kuperberg gave a construction of a smooth aperiodic vector field on a plug, which is then used to construct counter-examples to the Seifert Conjecture for smooth flows on the $3$-sphere, and on compact 3-manifolds in general. The dynamics of the flows in these plugs have been extensively studied, with more precise results known in special "generic" cases of the construction. Moreover, the dynamical properties of smooth perturbations of Kuperberg's construction have been considered. In this work, we recall some of the results obtained to date for the Kuperberg flows and their perturbations. Then the main point of this work is to focus attention on how the known results for Kuperberg flows depend on the assumptions imposed on the flows, and to discuss some of the many interesting questions and problems that remain open about their dynamical and ergodic properties.

Dynamics and the Godbillon-Vey Class of C^1 Foliations

Let F be a codimension-one, C^2-foliation on a manifold M without boundary. In this work we show that if the Godbillon--Vey class GV(F) \in H^3(M) is non-zero, then F has a hyperbolic resilient leaf. Our approach is based on methods of C^1-dynamical systems, and does not use the classification theory of C^2-foliations. We first prove that for a codimension--one C^1-foliation with non-trivial Godbillon measure, the set of infinitesimally expanding points E(F) has positive Lebesgue measure. We then prove that if E(F) has positive measure for a C^1-foliation F, then F must have a hyperbolic resilient leaf, and hence its geometric entropy must be positive. The proof of this uses a pseudogroup version of the Pliss Lemma. The theorem then follows, as a C^2-foliation with non-zero Godbillon-Vey class has non-trivial Godbillon measure. These results apply for both the case when M is compact, and when M is an open manifold.

The dynamics of generic Kuperberg flows

In this work, we study the dynamical properties of Krystyna Kuperberg's aperiodic flows on $3$-manifolds. We introduce the notion of a ``zippered lamination'', and with suitable generic hypotheses, show that the unique minimal set for such a flow is an invariant zippered lamination. We obtain a precise description of the topology and dynamical properties of the minimal set, including the presence of non-zero entropy-type invariants and chaotic behavior. Moreover, we show that the minimal set does not have stable shape, yet satisfies the Mittag-Leffler condition for homology groups.

Lectures on Foliation Dynamics: Barcelona 2010

This survey is based on a series of five lectures, given May 3--7, 2010, at the Centre de Recerca Matematica, Barcelona. The goal of the lectures was to present aspects of the theory of foliation dynamical systems which have particular importance for the classification of foliations of compact manifolds. The lectures emphasized intuitive concepts and informal discussion, while taking the reader into topics of active research in this subject. These notes update and expand on the lectures, and include more recent progress. This article also includes an extensive set of references, as well as highlighting many open questions and problems. A set of "homework problems" is also included, one for each day of lecture.

Lipshitz matchbox manifolds

A matchbox manifold is a connected, compact foliated space with totally disconnected transversals; or in other notation, a generalized lamination. It is said to be Lipschitz if there exists a metric on its transversals for which the holonomy maps are Lipschitz. Examples of Lipschitz matchbox manifolds include the exceptional minimal sets for $C^1$-foliations of compact manifolds, tiling spaces, the classical solenoids, and the weak solenoids of McCord and Schori, among others. We address the question: When does a Lipschitz matchbox manifold admit an embedding as a minimal set for a smooth dynamical system, or more generally for as an exceptional minimal set for a $C^1$-foliation of a smooth manifold? We gives examples which do embed, and develop criteria for showing when they do not embed, and give examples. We also discuss the classification theory for Lipschitz weak solenoids.

Voronoi tessellations for matchbox manifolds

Matchbox manifolds ${\mathfrak M}$ are a special class of foliated spaces, which includes as special examples exceptional minimal sets of foliations, weak solenoids, suspensions of odometer and Toeplitz actions, and tiling spaces associated to aperiodic tilings with finite local complexity. Some of these classes of examples are endowed with an additional structure, that of a transverse foliation, consisting of a continuous family of Cantor sets transverse to the foliated structure. The purpose of this paper is to show that this transverse structure can be defined on all minimal matchbox manifolds. This follows from the construction of uniform stable Voronoi tessellations on a dense leaf, which is the main goal of this work. From this we define a foliated Delaunay triangulation of ${\mathfrak M}$, adapted to the dynamics of ${\mathcal F}$. The result is highly technical, but underlies the study of the basic topological structure of matchbox manifolds in general. Our methods are unique in that we give the construction of the Voronoi tessellations for a complete Riemannian manifold $L$ of arbitrary dimension, with stability estimates.

Embedding solenoids in foliations

In this paper we find smooth embeddings of solenoids in smooth foliations. We show that if a smooth foliation F of a manifold M contains a compact leaf L with H^1(L;R)= 0 and if the foliation is a product foliation in some saturated open neighbourhood U of L, then there exists a foliation F' on M which is C^1-close to F, and F' has an uncountable set of solenoidal minimal sets contained in U that are pair wise non-homeomorphic. If H^1(L;R) is not 0, then it is known that any sufficiently small perturbation of F contains a saturated product neighbourhood. Thus, our result can be thought of as an instability result complementing the stability results of Reeb, Thurston and Langevin and Rosenberg.

Homogeneous matchbox manifolds

We prove that a homogeneous matchbox manifold of any finite dimension is homeomorphic to a McCord solenoid, thereby proving a strong version of a conjecture of Fokkink and Oversteegen. The proof uses techniques from the theory of foliations that involve making important connections between homogeneity and equicontinuity. The results provide a framework for the study of equicontinuous minimal sets of foliations that have the structure of a matchbox manifold.
