Analytic Spread and Associated primes of divisorial filtrations

We prove that a classical theorem of McAdam about the analytic spread of an ideal in a Noetherian local ring is true for divisorial filtrations on an excellent local ring $R$ which is either of equicharacteristic zero or of dimension $\le 3$ . In fact, the proof is valid whenever resolution of singularities holds.

Analytic Spread of Filtrations and Symbolic Algebras

In this paper we define and explore the analytic spread $\ell(\mathcal I)$ of a filtration in a local ring. We show that, especially for divisorial and symbolic filtrations, some basic properties of the analytic spread of an ideal extend to filtrations, even when the filtration is non Noetherian. We also illustrate some significant differences between the analytic spread of a filtration and the analytic spread of an ideal with examples. In the case of an ideal $I$ , we have the classical bounds $\mbox{ht}(I)\le\ell(I)\le \dim R$. The upper bound $\ell(\mathcal I)\le \dim R$ is true for filtrations $\mathcal I$ , but the lower bound is not true for all filtrations. We show that for the filtration $\mathcal I$ of symbolic powers of a height two prime ideal $\mathfrak p$ in a regular local ring of dimension three (a space curve singularity), so that $\mbox{ht}(\mathcal I) =2$ and $\dim R=3$ , we have that $0\le \ell(\mathcal I)\le 2$ and all values of 0,1 and 2 can occur. In the cases of analytic spread 0 and 1 the symbolic algebra is necessarily non-Noetherian. The symbolic algebra is non-Noetherian if and only if $\ell(\mathfrak p^{(n)})=3$ for all symbolic powers of $\mathfrak p$ and if and only if $\ell(\mathcal I_a)=3$ for all truncations $\mathcal I_a$ of $\mathcal I$ .

Analytic spread of filtrations on two dimensional normal local rings

In this paper we prove that a classical theorem by McAdam about the analytic spread of an ideal in a Noetherian local ring continues to be true for divisorial filtrations on a two dimensional normal excellent local ring $R$ , and that the Hilbert polynomial of the fiber cone of a divisorial filtration on $R$ has a Hilbert function which is the sum of a linear polynomial and a bounded function. We prove these theorems by first studying asymptotic properties of divisors on a resolution of singularities of the spectrum of $R$ . The filtration of the symbolic powers of an ideal is an example of a divisorial filtration. Divisorial filtrations are often not Noetherian, giving a significant difference in the classical case of filtrations of powers of ideals and divisorial filtrations.

Erratic birational behavior of mappings in positive characteristic

Birational properites of generically finite morphisms $X\rightarrow Y$ of algebraic varieties can be understood locally by a valuation of the function field of $X$ . In finite extensions of algebraic local rings in characteristic zero algebraic function fields which are dominated by a valuation there are nice monomial forms of the mapping after blowing up enough, which reflect classical invariants of the valuation. Further, these forms are stable upon suitable further blowing up. In positive characteristic algebraic function fields it is not always possible to find a monomial form after blowing up along a valuation, even in dimension two. In dimension two and positive characteristic, after enough blowing up, there are stable forms of the mapping which hold upon suitable sequences of blowing. We give examples showing that even within these stable forms, the forms can vary dramatically (erratically) upon further blowing up. We construct these examples in towers of defect Artin-Schreier extensions which can have any prescribed distance.

Multiplicities and Mixed Multiplicities of arbitrary Filtrations

We develop a theory of multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of filtrations, extending the theory for filtrations of $m$ -primary ideals to arbitrary (not necessarily Noetherian) filtrations. The mixed multiplicities of $r$ filtrations on an analytically unramified local ring $R$ come from the coefficients of a suitable homogeneous polynomial in $r$ variables of degree equal to the dimension of the ring, analogously to the classical case of the mixed multiplicities of $m$ -primary ideals in a local ring. We prove that the Minkowski inequalities hold for arbitrary filtrations. The characterization of equality in the Minkowski inequality for m-primary ideals in a local ring by Teissier, Rees and Sharp and Katz does not extend to arbitrary filtrations, but we show that they are true in a large and important subcategory of filtrations. We define divisorial and bounded filtrations. The filtration of powers of a fixed ideal is a bounded filtration, as is a divisorial filtration. We show that in an excellent local domain, the characterization of equality in the Minkowski equality is characterized by the condition that the integral closures of suitable Rees like algebras are the same, strictly generalizing the theorem of Teissier, Rees and Sharp and Katz. We also prove that a theorem of Rees characterizing the inclusion of ideals with the same multiplicity generalizes to bounded filtrations in excellent local domains. We give a number of other applications, extending classical theorems for ideals.

On the construction of valuations and generating sequences on hypersurface singularities

Suppose that (K, $ν$ ) is a valued field, f (z) $\in$ K[z] is a unitary and irreducible polynomial and (L, $ω$ ) is an extension of valued fields, where L = K[z]/(f (z)). Further suppose that A is a local domain with quotient field K such that $ν$ has nonnegative value on A and positive value on its maximal ideal, and that f (z) is in A[z]. This paper is devoted to the problem of describing the structure of the associated graded ring gr $ω$ A[z]/(f (z)) of A[z]/(f (z)) for the filtration defined by $ω$ as an extension of the associated graded ring of A for the filtration defined by $ν$ . In particular we give an algorithm which in many cases produces a finite set of elements of A[z]/(f (z)) whose images in gr $ω$ A[z]/(f (z)) generate it as a gr $ν$ A-algebra as well as the relations between them. We also work out the interactions of our method of computation with phenomena which complicate the study of ramification and local uniformization in positive characteristic , such as the non tameness and the defect of an extension. For valuations of rank one in a separable extension of valued fields (K, $ν$ ) $\subset$ (L, $ω$ ) as above our algorithm produces a generating sequence in a local birational extension A1 of A dominated by $ν$ if and only if there is no defect. In this case, gr $ω$ A1[z]/(f (z)) is a finitely presented gr $ν$ A1-module. This is an improved version, thanks to a referee's remarks.

The Minkowski Equality for Filtrations

Suppose that R is an analytically irreducible or excellent local domain with maximal ideal m_R. We consider multiplicities and mixed multiplicities of R by filtrations of m_R-primary ideals. We show that the theorem of Teissier, Rees and Sharp, and Katz, characterizing equality in the Minkowski inequality for multiplicities of ideals, is true for divisorial filtrations, and for the larger category of bounded filtrations. This theorem is not true for arbitrary filtrations of m_R-primary ideals.

Essential Finite Generation of Valuation Rings in Characteristic Zero Algebraic Function Fields

Let $K$ be a characteristic zero algebraic function field with a valuation $ν$ . Let $L$ be a finite extension of $K$ and $ω$ be an extension of $ν$ to $L$ . We establish that the valuation ring $V_ω$ of $ω$ is essentially finitely generated over the valuation ring $V_ν$ of $ν$ if and only if the initial index $ε(ω|ν)$ is equal to the ramification index $e(ω|ν)$ of the extension. This gives a positive answer, for characteristic zero algebraic function fields, to a question posed by Hagen Knaf.

Fibers of rational maps and Jacobian matrices

A rational map $ϕ: \mathbb{P}_k^m \dashrightarrow \mathbb{P}_k^n$ is defined by homogeneous polynomials of a common degree $d$ . We establish a linear bound in terms of $d$ for the number of $(m-1)$ -dimensional fibers of $ϕ$ , by using ideals of minors of the Jacobian matrix. In particular, we answer affirmatively Question~11 in arXiv:1511.02933v2.

A Stronger Local Monomialization Theorem

We derive extensions of the monomialization theorems for morphisms of varieties in our earlier work. In this note we show that a local monomialization can be found which satisfies stronger local conditions. Some comments are made about how the results of this paper can be used.

Étoiles and Valuations

We establish some properties of étoiles and associated valuations over complex analytic spaces, showing that Abhyankar's inequality holds. We give some examples of pathological behavior of these valuations. We prove a regularization theorem for complex analytic morphisms.

Local Monomialization of Analytic Maps

In this paper, local monomialization theorems are proven for analytic morphisms of complex and real analytic spaces. This gives the generalization of the local monomialization theorem for morphisms of algebraic varieties over a field of characteristic zero proven in the author's earlier papers "Local monomialization of morphisms", Asterisque 260 (1999) and "Local monomialization of transcendental extensions", Annales de l'institut Fourier, 1517 - 1586.

Rectilinearization of sub analytic sets as a consequence of local monomialization

We give a new proof of the rectilinearization theorem of Hironaka. We deduce rectilinearization as a consequence of our theorem on local monomialization for complex and real analytic morphisms.

Asymptotic Multiplicities of Graded Families of Ideals and Linear Series

We find simple necessary and sufficient conditions on a local ring $R$ of dimension $d$ for the limit $\lim_{i\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\ell_R(R/I_n)}{n^d}$ to exist whenever $\{I_n\}$ is a graded family of $m_R$ -primary ideals, and give a number of applications. We also give simple necessary and sufficient conditions on projective schemes over a field $k$ for asymptotic limits of the growth of all graded linear series of a fixed Kodaira-Iitaka dimension to exist.

Counterexamples to local monomialization in positive characteristic

In this paper we consider birational properties of ramification in excellent local rings. We give an example showing that local monomialization (and weak local monomialization) can fail for extensions of algebraic local rings in algebraic function fields of dimension greater than or equal to two along a valuation over a field of positive characteristic. It was earlier proven by the author that local monomialization holds within characteristic zero algebraic function fields.

Ramification of valuations and local rings

In this paper we consider birational properties of ramification in excellent local rings. We extend earlier results of the author with Olivier Piltant to show that strong local monomialization is true along a valuation dominating a defectless extension of two dimensional excellent local rings. We also obtain general results on the structure of the extension of associated graded rings along a valuation, and show that the invariants alpha and beta of stable forms of two dimensional extensions in characteristic p of the author and Olivier Piltant are not eventually constant.

A generalization of the Abhyankar Jung theorem to associated graded rings of valuations

Suppose that R\rightarrow S is an extension of local domains and ν^* is a valuation dominating S. We consider the natural extension of associated graded rings along the valuation gr_{ν^*}(R)\rightarrow gr_{ν^*}(S). We give examples showing that in general, this extension does not share good properties of the extension $\rightarrow S, but after enough blow ups above the valuations, good properties of the extension R\rightarrow S are reflected in the extension of associated graded rings. Stable properties of this extension (after blowing up) are much better in characteristic zero than in positive characteristic. Our main result is a generalization of the Abhyankar-Jung theorem which holds for extensions of associated graded rings along the valuation, after enough blowing up.

Valuation Semigroups of Two Dimensional Local Rings

We consider the question of when a semigroup is the semigroup of a valuation dominating a two dimensional noetherian local domain, giving some surprising examples. We give a necessary and sufficient condition for the pair of a semigroup S and a field extension L/k to be the semigroup and residue field of a valaution dominating a regular local ring R of dimension two with residue field k, generalizing the theorem of Spivakovsky for the case when there is no residue field extension.

Asymptotic Multiplicities

We give several new applications of our theorem on the existence of multiplicity of graded families of ideals as a limit, including a very general Minkowski type inequality for graded families of ideals, a very general formula for existence of local volumes as a limit and a very general theorem on the existence of epsilon multiplicities as a limit for modules.

Multiplicities Associated to Graded Families of Ideals

We prove that limits of multiplicities associated to graded families of ideals exist under very general conditions. Most of our results hold for analytically unramified equicharacteristic local rings, with perfect residue fields. We give a number of applications, including a "volume = multiplicity" formula, generalizing the formula of Lazarsfeld and Mustata, and a proof that the epsilon multiplicity of Ulrich and Validashti exists as a limit for ideals in rather general rings, including analytic local domains. We also prove an asymptotic "additivity formula" for limits of multiplicities, and a formula on limiting growth of valuations, which answers a question posed by the author, Kia Dalili and Olga Kashcheyeva. Our proofs are inspired by a philosophy of Okounkov, for computing limits of multiplicities as the volume of a slice of an appropriate cone generated by a semigroup determined by an appropriate filtration on a family of algebraic objects.

Multiplicities of graded families of linear series and ideals

We give simple necessary and sufficient conditions on projective schemes over a field k for asymptotic limits of the growth of all graded linear series of a fixed Kodaira-Iitaka dimension to exist. We also give necessary and sufficient conditions on a local ring R of dimension d for the limit \lim_{i\rightarrow\infty}\frac{\ell_R(R/I_n)}{n^d} to exist whenever \{I_n\} is a graded family of m_R-primary ideals. We give a number of applications.

Ramification of local rings along valuations

In this paper we discuss stable forms of extensions of algebraic local rings along a valuation in all dimensions over a field k of characteristic zero, and generalize a formula of Ghezzi, Hà and Kashcheyeva describing the extension of associated graded rings along the valuation for stable extensions of regular algebraic local rings of dimension two to arbitrary ground fields k of characteristic zero. We discuss the failure of this result in positive characteristic.
