Schmidt's Game and Vitali Sets

While many types of non-measurable sets are never (α,β)(α, β)-winning in the sense of Schmidt's game, we show that this is not the case for certain Vitali sets. Our main theorems show that for certain values of α,βα, β one can construct a Vitali set which is (α,β)(α, β)-winning, while for other values of α,βα,β every Vitali set is (α,β)(α,β)-losing. We also investigate the (α,β)(α,β)-Schmidt game for various other types of pathological sets, highlighting their differences from Vitali sets.

On the existence of numbers with matching continued fraction and decimal expansions

A Trott number is a number x∈(0,1)x\in(0,1) whose continued fraction expansion is equal to its base bb expansion for a given base bb, in the following sense: If x=[0;a1,a2,… ]x=[0;a_1,a_2,\dots], then x=(0.a^1a^2… )bx=(0.\hat{a}_1\hat{a}_2\dots)_b, where a^i\hat{a}_i is the string of digits resulting from writing aia_i in base bb. In this paper we characterize the set of bases for which Trott numbers exist, and show that for these bases, the set TbT_b of Trott numbers is a complete GδG_δ set. We prove moreover that the union T:=⋃b≥2TbT:=\bigcup_{b\geq 2} T_b is nowhere dense and has Hausdorff dimension less than one. Finally, we give several sufficient conditions on bases bb and b′b' such that Tb∩Tb′=∅T_b\cap T_{b'}=\emptyset, and conjecture that this is the case for all b≠b′b\neq b'. This question has connections with some deep theorems in Diophantine approximation.

Equivalence Relations and Determinacy

We introduce the notion of (Γ,E)(Γ,E)-determinacy for ΓΓ a pointclass and EE an equivalence relation on a Polish space XX. A case of particular interest is the case when E=EGE=E_G is the (left) shift-action of GG on SGS^G where S=2={0,1}S=2=\{0,1\} or S=ωS=ω. We show that for all shift actions by countable groups GG, and any "reasonable" pointclass ΓΓ, that (Γ,EG)(Γ,E_G)-determinacy implies ΓΓ-determinacy. We also prove a corresponding result when EE is a subshift of finite type of the shift map on 2Z2^\mathbb{Z}.

Hausdorff Dimension Regularity Properties and Games

The Hausdorff δδ-dimension game was introduced by Das, Fishman, Simmons and {Urba{ń}ski} and shown to characterize sets in Rd\mathbb{R}^d having Hausdorff dimension ≤δ\leq δ. We introduce a variation of this game which also characterizes Hausdorff dimension and for which we are able to prove an unfolding result similar to the basic unfolding property for the Banach-Mazur game for category. We use this to derive a number of consequences for Hausdorff dimension. We show that under AD\mathsf{AD} any wellordered union of sets each of which has Hausdorff dimension ≤δ\leq δ has dimension ≤δ\leq δ. We establish a continuous uniformization result for Hausdorff dimension. The unfolded game also provides a new proof that every Σ11\boldsymbolΣ^1_1 set of Hausdorff dimension ≥δ\geq δ contains a compact subset of dimension ≥δ′\geq δ' for any δ′<δδ'<δ, and this result generalizes to arbitrary sets under AD\mathsf{AD}.
