Successfully combining SUGRA hybrid inflation and moduli stabilisation

Inflation and moduli stabilisation mechanisms work well independently, and many string-motivated supergravity models have been proposed for them. However a complete theory will contain both, and there will be (gravitational) interactions between the two sectors. These give corrections to the inflaton potential, which generically ruin inflation. This holds true even for fine-tuned moduli stabilisation schemes. Following a suggestion by 0712.3460, we show that a viable combined model can be obtained if it is the Kahler functions (G= K+\ln |W|^2) of the two sectors that are added, rather than the superpotentials (as is usually done). Interaction between the two sectors does still impose some restrictions on the moduli stabilisation mechanism, which are derived. Significantly, we find that the (post-inflation) moduli stabilisation scale no longer needs to be above the inflationary energy scale.

Moduli Corrections to D-term Inflation

We present a D-term hybrid inflation model, embedded in supergravity with moduli stabilisation. Its novel features allow us to overcome the serious challenges of combining D-term inflation and moduli fields within the same string-motivated theory. One salient point of the model is the positive definite uplifting D-term arising from the moduli stabilisation sector. By coupling this D-term to the inflationary sector, we generate an effective Fayet-Iliopoulos term. Moduli corrections to the inflationary dynamics are also obtained. Successful inflation is achieved for a limited range of parameter values with spectral index compatible with the WMAP3 data. Cosmic D-term strings are also formed at the end of inflation; these are no longer Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfeld (BPS) objects. The properties of the strings are studied.

Constraints on Gauss-Bonnet Gravity in Dark Energy Cosmologies

Models with a scalar field coupled to the Gauss-Bonnet Lagrangian appear naturally from Kaluza-Klein compactifications of pure higher-dimensional gravity. We study linear, cosmological perturbations in the limits of weak coupling and slow-roll, and derive simple expressions for the main observable sub-horizon quantities: the anisotropic stress factor, the time-dependent gravitational constant, and the matter perturbation growth factor. Using present observational data, and assuming slow-roll for the dark energy field, we find that the fraction of energy density associated with the coupled Gauss-Bonnet term cannot exceed 15%. The bound should be treated with caution, as there are significant uncertainies in the data used to obtain it. Even so, it indicates that the future prospects for constraining the coupled Gauss-Bonnet term with cosmological observations are encouraging.

Destruction of Fermion Zero Modes on Cosmic Strings

I examine the existence of zero energy fermion solutions (zero modes) on cosmic strings in an SO(10) grand unified theory. The current carrying capability of a cosmic string formed at one phase transition can be modified at subsequent phase transitions. I show that the zero modes may be destroyed and the conductivity of the string altered. I discuss the cosmological implications of this, and show that it allows vorton bounds to be relaxed.

The Fate of Cosmic String Zero Modes

Cosmic strings in realistic particle physics models have fermion zero modes in the string core. Such zero modes change the underlying cosmology; for example, the string can carry a current. We consider the stability of fermion zero modes to interactions with particles in the surrounding plasma. We also consider cosmological constraints on such theories, particulary those with a chiral fermion zero mode, such as arises in a class of supersymmetric models.
