The aperiodic complexities and connections to dimensions and Diophantine approximation

In their earlier work (Ergodic Th. Dynam. Sys., 34: 1699 -1723, 10 2014), the authors introduced the so called F-aperiodic orbits of a dynamical system on a compact metric space X, which satisfy a quantitative condition measuring its recurrence and aperiodicity. Using this condition we introduce two new quantities $\cal{F}$, $\cal{G}$, called the `aperiodic complexities', of the system and establish relations between $\cal{F}$, $\cal{G}$ with the topology and geometry of X. We compare them to well-know complexities such as the box-dimension and the topological entropy. Moreover, we connect our condition to the distribution of periodic orbits and we can classify an F-aperiodic orbit of a point x in X in terms of the collection of the introduced approximation constants of x. Finally, we discuss our results for several examples, in particular for the geodesic flow on hyperbolic manifolds. For each of our examples there is a suitable model of Diophantine approximation and we classify F-aperiodic orbits in terms of Diophantine properties of the point x. As a byproduct, we prove a `metric version' of the closing lemma in the context of CAT(-1) spaces.

Dimension Functions on the Spectrum over Bounded Geodesics and Applications to Diophantine Approximation

The set B of geodesic rays avoiding a suitable obstacle in a complete negatively curved Riemannian manifold determines a spectrum S. While various properties of this spectrum are known, we define and study dimension functions on S in terms of the Hausdorff-dimension of suitable subsets of the set of bounded geodesic rays. We establish estimates on the Hausdorff-dimension of these subsets and thereby obtain non-trivial bounds for the dimension functions. Moreover we discuss the property of B being an absolute winning set, therefore satisfying a remarkable rigidity. Finally, we apply the obtained results to the dimension functions on the spectrum of complex numbers badly approximable by either an imaginary quadratic number field $Q(i \sqrt{d})$ or by quadratic irrational numbers over $Q(i \sqrt{d})$.

Schmidt Games and Conditions on Resonant Sets

Winning sets of Schmidt's game enjoy a remarkable rigidity. Therefore, this game (and modifications of it) have been applied to many examples of complete metric spaces (X, d) to show that the set of "badly approximable points", with respect to a given collection of resonant sets in X, is a winning set. For these examples, strategies were deduced that are, in most cases, strongly adapted to the specific dynamics and properties of the underlying setting. We introduce a new modification of Schmidt's game which is a combination and generalization of the ones of [18] and [20]. This modification allows us to axiomatize conditions on the collection of resonant sets under which there always exists a winning strategy. Moreover, we discuss properties of winning sets of this modification and verify our conditions for several examples - among them, the set of badly approximable vectors in the Euclidian space and the p-adic integers with weights and, as a main example, the set of geodesic rays in proper geodesic CAT(-1) spaces which avoid a suitable collection of convex subsets.
