On the convergence of second-order in time numerical discretizations for the evolution Navier-Stokes equations

We prove the convergence of certain second-order numerical methods to weak solutions of the Navier-Stokes equations satisfying in addition the local energy inequality, and therefore suitable in the sense of Scheffer and Caffarelli-Kohn-Nirenberg. More precisely, we treat the space-periodic case in three space-dimensions and we consider a full discretization in which the the classical Crank-Nicolson method ($θ$-method with $θ=1/2$) is used to discretize the time variable, while in the space variables we consider finite elements. The convective term is discretized in several implicit, semi-implicit, and explicit ways. In particular, we focus on proving (possibly conditional) convergence of the discrete solutions towards weak solutions (satisfying a precise local energy balance), without extra regularity assumptions on the limit problem. We do not prove orders of convergence, but our analysis identifies some numerical schemes providing also alternate proofs of existence of "physically relevant" solutions in three space dimensions.

Strong convergence of the vorticity for the 2D Euler Equations in the inviscid limit

In this paper we prove the uniform-in-time $L^p$ convergence in the inviscid limit of a family $ω^ν$ of solutions of the $2D$ Navier-Stokes equations towards a renormalized/Lagrangian solution $ω$ of the Euler equations. We also prove that, in the class of solutions with bounded vorticity, it is possible to obtain a rate for the convergence of $ω^ν$ to $ω$ in $L^p$. Finally, we show that solutions of the Euler equations with $L^p$ vorticity, obtained in the vanishing viscosity limit, conserve the kinetic energy. The proofs are given by using both a (stochastic) Lagrangian approach and an Eulerian approach.

Global existence of finite energy weak solutions to the Quantum Navier-Stokes equations with non-trivial far-field behavior

We prove global existence of finite energy weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equations in the whole space with non trivial far-field condition in dimensions d = 2,3. The vacuum regions are included in the weak formulation of the equations. Our method consists in an invading domains approach. More precisely, by using a suitable truncation argument we construct a sequence of approximate solutions. The energy and the BD entropy bounds allow for the passage to the limit in the truncated formulation leading to a finite energy weak solution. Moreover, the result is also valid in the case of compressible Navier-Stokes equations with degenerate viscosity.

Quasiconvex elastodynamics: weak-strong uniqueness for measure-valued solutions

A weak-strong uniqueness result is proved for measure-valued solutions to the system of conservation laws arising in elastodynamics. The main novelty brought forward by the present work is that the underlying stored-energy function of the material is assumed strongly quasiconvex. The proof employs tools from the calculus of variations to establish general convexity-type bounds on quasiconvex functions and recasts them in order to adapt the relative entropy method to quasiconvex elastodynamics.

Smooth approximation is not a selection principle for the transport equation with rough vector field

In this paper we analyse the selection problem for weak solutions of the transport equation with rough vector field. We answer in the negative the question whether solutions of the equation with a regularized vector field converge to a unique limit, which would be the selected solution of the limit problem. To this aim, we give a new example of a vector field which admits infinitely many flows. Then we construct a smooth approximating sequence of the vector field for which the corresponding solutions have subsequences converging to different solutions of the limit equation.

Splash singularities for a general Oldroyd model with finite Weissenberg number

In this paper we study a 2D Oldroyd free-boundary model which describes the evolution of a viscoelastic fluid. We prove existence of splash singularities, namely points where the boundary remains smooth but self-intersects. This paper extends the previous results obtained for infinite Weissenberg number to the case of any finite Weissenberg number. The main difficulty of this paper is due to the non linear balance law of the elastic tensor which cannot be reduced, as in the case of infinite Weissenberg, to the transport equations for the deformation gradient. Our strategy in accurate local existence result depending on the Weissenberg number and the combination of Conformal and Lagrangian transformations. The existence of splash singularities is guarantee by a suitable choice of the initial data combined with stability estimates.

Weak solutions obtained by the vortex method for the 2D Euler equations are Lagrangian and conserve the energy

We discuss the Lagrangian property and the conservation of the kinetic energy for solutions of the 2D incompressible Euler equations. Existence of Lagrangian solutions is known when the initial vorticity is in $L^p$ with $1\leq p\leq \infty$. Moreover, if $p\geq 3/2$ all weak solutions are conservative. In this work we prove that solutions obtained via the vortex method are Lagrangian, and that they are conservative if $p>1$.

On the compactness of finite energy weak solutions to the quantum Navier-Stokes equations

We consider the Quantum Navier-Stokes system in three space dimensions. We prove compactness of finite energy weak solutions for large initial data. The main novelties are that vacuum regions are included in the weak formulation and no extra terms, like damping or cold pressure, are considered in the equations in order to define the velocity field. Our argument uses an equivalent formulation of the system in terms of an effective velocity, in order to eliminate the third order terms in the new system. It allows us to derive estimates similar to the ones available in the case of the compressible Navier-Stokes with degenerate viscosity.

Suitable weak solutions to the 3D Navier-Stokes equations are constructed with the Voigt Approximation

In this paper we consider the Navier-Stokes equations supplemented with either the Dirichlet or vorticity-based Navier boundary conditions. We prove that weak solutions obtained as limits of solutions to the Navier-Stokes-Voigt model satisfy the local energy inequality. Moreover, in the periodic setting we prove that if the parameters are chosen in an appropriate way, then we can construct suitable weak solutions trough a Fourier-Galerkin finite-dimensional approximation in the space variables.

Failure of the chain rule for the divergence of bounded vector fields

We provide a vast class of counterexamples to the chain rule for the divergence of bounded vector fields in three space dimensions. Our convex integration approach allows us to produce renormalization defects of various kinds, which in a sense quantify the breakdown of the chain rule. For instance, we can construct defects which are absolutely continuous with respect to Lebesgue measure, or defects which are not even measures.

Renormalized solutions to the continuity equation with an integrable damping term

We consider the continuity equation with a nonsmooth vector field and a damping term. In their fundamental paper, DiPerna and Lions proved that, when the damping term is bounded in space and time, the equation is well posed in the class of distributional solutions and the solution is transported by suitable characteristics of the vector field. In this paper, we prove existence and uniqueness of renormalized solutions in the case of an integrable damping term, employing a new logarithmic estimate inspired by analogous ideas of Ambrosio, Lecumberry, and Maniglia, Crippa and De Lellis in the Lagrangian case.

Inviscid limits for the 3D Navier-Stokes equations with slip boundary conditions and applications to the 3D Boussinesq equations

In this note we consider the inviscid limit for the 3D Boussinesq equations without diffusion, under slip boundary conditions of Navier's type. We first study more closely the Navier-Stokes equations, to better understand the problem. The role of the initial data is also emphasized in connection with the vanishing viscosity limit.
