Direct Access to 5G New Radio User Equipment from NGSO Satellites in Millimeter Waves

The next generation of terrestrial radio communications, so-called fifth generation (5G) New Radio (NR), beyond the traditional bands below 6 GHz, has been also specified to operate over millimeter waves (mmWaves), in the so-called Frequency Range 2 (FR2). Such frequency bands have been since decades the natural habitat for fixed satellite services (FSS). In this new landscape, this paper preliminary investigates the feasibility of non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellites directly accessing NR-enabled User Equipment (UE) in mmWaves, from a regulatory, UE characteristics, space segment, link budget and system point of view. It also identifies future R and D needs in this area.

DVB-S2x Enabled Precoding for High Throughput Satellite Systems

Multi-user Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MU-MIMO) has allowed recent releases of terrestrial LTE standards to achieve significant improvements in terms of offered system capacity. The publications of the DVB-S2x standard and particularly of its novel superframe structure is a key enabler for applying similar interference management techniques -such as precoding- to multibeam High Throughput Satellite (HTS) systems. This paper presents results resulting from European Space Agency (ESA) funded R&D activities concerning the practical issues that arise when precoding is applied over an aggressive frequency re-use HTS network. In addressing these issues, the paper also proposes pragmatic solutions that have been developed in order to overcome these limitations. Through the application of a comprehensive system simulator, it is demonstrated that important capacity gains (beyond 40%) are to be expected from applying precoding even after introducing a number of significant practical impairments.

Advanced channel coding for space mission telecommand links

We investigate and compare different options for updating the error correcting code currently used in space mission telecommand links. Taking as a reference the solutions recently emerged as the most promising ones, based on Low-Density Parity-Check codes, we explore the behavior of alternative schemes, based on parallel concatenated turbo codes and soft-decision decoded BCH codes. Our analysis shows that these further options can offer similar or even better performance.

Advanced coding schemes against jamming in telecommand links

The aim of this paper is to study the performance of some coding schemes recently proposed for updating the TC channel coding standard for space applications, in the presence of jamming. Besides low-density parity-check codes, that appear as the most eligible candidates, we also consider other solutions based on parallel turbo codes and extended BCH codes. We show that all these schemes offer very good performance, which approaches the theoretical limits achievable.

A Network-Coded Diversity Protocol for Collision Recovery in Slotted ALOHA Networks

We propose a collision recovery scheme for symbol-synchronous slotted ALOHA (SA) based on physical layer network coding over extended Galois Fields. Information is extracted from colliding bursts allowing to achieve higher maximum throughput with respect to previously proposed collision recovery schemes. An energy analysis is also performed, and it is shown that, by adjusting the transmission probability, high energy efficiency can be achieved. The paper also addresses several practical aspects, namely frequency, phase, and amplitude estimation, as well as partial symbol asynchronism. A performance evaluation is carried out using the proposed algorithms, revealing remarkable performance in terms of normalized throughput.
