On a Sobolev critical problem for the superposition of a local and nonlocal operator with the "wrong sign''

We study a critical problem for an operator of mixed order obtained by the superposition of a Laplacian with a fractional Laplacian. The main novelty is that we consider a mixed operator of the form $-Δ- γ(-Δ)^s$, namely we suppose that the fractional Laplacian has the ``wrong sign'' and can be seen as a nonlocal perturbation of the purely local case, which is needed to produce a nontrivial solution of the critical problem.

A Brezis-Oswald approach for mixed local and nonlocal operators

In this paper we provide necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of a unique positive weak solution for some sublinear Dirichlet problems driven by the sum of a quasilinear local and a nonlocal operator, i.e., $$\mathcal{L}_{p,s} = -Δ_p + (-Δ)^s_p.$$ Our main result is resemblant to the celebrated work by Brezis-Oswald [10]. In addition, we prove a regularity result of independent interest.

Symmetry and monotonicity of singular solutions to $p$-Laplacian systems involving a first order term

We consider positive singular solutions (i.e. with a non-removable singularity) of a system of PDEs driven by $p$-Laplacian operators and with the additional presence of a nonlinear first order term. By a careful use of a rather new version of the moving plane method, we prove the symmetry of the solutions. The result is already new in the scalar case.

Boundary value problems associated with singular strongly nonlinear equations with functional terms

We study boundary value problems associated with singular, strongly nonlinear differential equations with functional terms of type $$\big(Φ(k(t)\,x'(t))\big)' + f(t,\mathcal{G}_x(t))\,ρ(t, x'(t)) = 0$$ on a compact interval $[a,b]$. These equations are quite general due to the presence of a strictly increasing homeomorphism $Φ$, the so-called $Φ$-Laplacian operator, of a nonnegative function $k$, which may vanish on a set of null measure, and moreover of a functional term $\mathcal{G}_x$. We look for solutions, in a suitable weak sense, which belong to the Sobolev space $W^{1,1}([a,b])$. Under the assumptions of the existence of a well-ordered pair of upper and lower solutions and of a suitable Nagumo-type growth condition, we prove an existence result by means of fixed point arguments.

Global estimates for the fundamental solution of homogeneous Hörmander operators

Let $\mathcal{L}=\sum_{j=1}^{m}X_{j}^{2}$ be a Hörmander sum of squares of vector fields in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, where any $X_{j}$ is homogeneous of degree $1$ with respect to a family of non-isotropic dilations in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$. Then $\mathcal{L}$ is known to admit a global fundamental solution $Γ(x;y)$, that can be represented as the integral of a fundamental solution of a sublaplacian operator on a lifting space $\mathbb{R}^{n}\times \mathbb{R}^{p}$, equipped with a Carnot group structure. The aim of this paper is to prove global pointwise (upper and lower) estimates of $Γ$, in terms of the Carnot-Carathéodory distance induced by $X=\{X_{1},\ldots ,X_{m}\}$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, as well as global pointwise (upper) estimates for the $X$-derivatives of any order of $Γ$, together with suitable integral representations of these derivatives. The least dimensional case $n=2$ presents several peculiarities which are also investigated. Applications to the potential theory for $\mathcal{L}$ and to singular-integral estimates for the kernel $X_{i}X_{j}Γ$ are also provided. Finally, most of the results about $Γ$ are extended to the case of Hörmander operators with drift $\sum_{j=1}^{m}X_{j}^{2}+X_{0}$, where $X_{0}$ is $2$-homogeneous and $X_{1},...,X_{m}$ are $1$-homogeneous.

Global Gaussian estimates for the heat kernel of homogeneous sums of squares

Let $\mathcal{H}=\sum_{j=1}^{m}X_{j}^{2}-\partial_{t}$ be a heat-type operator in $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$, where $X=\{X_{1},\ldots,X_{m}\}$ is a system of smooth Hörmander's vector fields in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, and every $X_{j}$ is homogeneous of degree $1$ with respect to a family of non-isotropic dilations in $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, while no underlying group structure is assumed. In this paper we prove global (in space and time) upper and lower Gaussian estimates for the heat kernel $Γ(t,x;s,y)$ of $\mathcal{H}$, in terms of the Carnot-Carathéodory distance induced by $X$ on $\mathbb{R}^{n}$, as well as global upper Gaussian estimates for the $t$- or $X$-derivatives of any order of $Γ$. From the Gaussian bounds we derive the unique solvability of the Cauchy problem for a possibly unbounded continuous initial datum satisfying exponential growth at infinity. Also, we study the solvability of the H-Dirichlet problem on an arbitrary bounded domain. Finally, we establish a global scale-invariant Harnack inequality for non-negative solutions of $\mathcal{H}u=0$.

Semilinear elliptic equations involving mixed local and nonlocal operators

In this paper, we consider an elliptic operator obtained as the superposition of a classical second-order differential operator and a nonlocal operator of fractional type. Though the methods that we develop are quite general, for concreteness we focus on the case in which the operator takes the form $-Δ+(-Δ)^s$, with $s\in(0,1)$. We focus here on symmetry properties of the solutions and we prove a radial symmetry result, based on the moving plane method, and a one-dimensional symmetry result, related to a classical conjecture by G.W. Gibbons.

A Hardy Inequality for subelliptic operators with global fundamental solution, and an application to Unique Continuation

This is a chapter from PhD Thesis by Stefano Biagi (advisor: prof. A. Bonfiglioli). We overview existing results showing that it is possible to generalize the classical Hardy's Inequality to more general linear partial differential operators (PDOs, in the sequel), possibly degenerate-elliptic, of the following quasi-divergence form $$ \mathcal{L} = \frac{1}{w(x)}\sum_{i = 1}^N\frac{\partial}{\partial x_i} \left(\sum_{j = 1}^Nw(x)a_{ij}(x)\frac{\partial}{\partial x_j}\right), \quad x \in \mathbb{R}^N, $$ where $w \in C^{\infty}(\mathbb{R}^N,\mathbb{R})$ is a (smooth and) strictly positive function on the whole of $\mathbb{R}^N$ and $A(x) := \begin{pmatrix}a_{ij}(x) \end{pmatrix}$ is a symmetric and positive semi-definite $N\times N$ matrix with real $C^{\infty}$ entries. From such a inequality, it has been derived a result of unique continuation for the solutions of the equation $$ -\mathcal{L} u + Vu = 0, $$ where $\mathcal{L}$ is a left-invariant homogeneous PDO on a homogeneous Lie group $\mathbb{G}$ and $V$ is real-valued function defined on $\mathbb{G}$ and continuous on $\mathbb{G}\setminus\{0\}$.

The Strong Maximum Principle and the Harnack inequality for a class of hypoelliptic divergence-form operators

In this paper we consider a class of hypoelliptic second-order partial differential operators $\mathcal{L}$ in divergence form on $\mathbb{R}^N$, arising from CR geometry and Lie group theory, and we prove the Strong and Weak Maximum Principles and the Harnack Inequality for $\mathcal{L}$. The involved operators are not assumed to belong to the Hörmander hypoellipticity class, nor to satisfy subelliptic estimates, nor Muckenhoupt-type estimates on the degeneracy of the second order part; indeed our results hold true in the infinitely-degenerate case and for operators which are not necessarily sums of squares. We use a Control Theory result on hypoellipticity in order to recover a meaningful geometric information on connectivity and maxima propagation, yet in the absence of any Hörmander condition. For operators $\mathcal{L}$ with $C^ω$ coefficients, this control-theoretic result will also imply a Unique Continuation property for the $\mathcal{L}$-harmonic functions. The (Strong) Harnack Inequality is obtained via the Weak Harnack Inequality by means of a Potential Theory argument, and by a crucial use of the Strong Maximum Principle and the solvability of the Dirichlet problem for $\mathcal{L}$ on a basis of the Euclidean topology.

On M. Mérigot's theorem on the convergence domain of the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff-Dynkin series

The aim of this manuscript is to present the proof given by Michel Mérigot in 1974 for an enlarged convergence domain of the Campbell-Baker-Hausdorff-Dynkin series in the Lie algebra of a Banach-Lie group. This proof is based on a theorem, of independent interest, on the lifetime of the solution of a Cauchy problem. We furnish all the details for this ODE result in Appendix A.
