Determination of the QCD $Λ$-parameter and the accuracy of perturbation theory at high energies

We discuss the determination of the strong coupling $α_\mathrm{\overline{MS}}^{}(m_\mathrm{Z})$ or equivalently the QCD $Λ$-parameter. Its determination requires the use of perturbation theory in $α_s(μ)$ in some scheme, $s$, and at some energy scale $μ$. The higher the scale $μ$ the more accurate perturbation theory becomes, owing to asymptotic freedom. As one step in our computation of the $Λ$-parameter in three-flavor QCD, we perform lattice computations in a scheme which allows us to non-perturbatively reach very high energies, corresponding to $α_s = 0.1$ and below. We find that (continuum) perturbation theory is very accurate there, yielding a three percent error in the $Λ$-parameter, while data around $α_s \approx 0.2$ is clearly insufficient to quote such a precision. It is important to realize that these findings are expected to be generic, as our scheme has advantageous properties regarding the applicability of perturbation theory.

Perturbative O($a^2$) effects in gradient flow couplings with SF and SF-open boundary conditions

The gradient flow provides a new class of renormalized observables which can be measured with high precision in lattice simulations. In principle this allows for many interesting applications to renormalization and improvement problems. In practice, however, such applications are made difficult by the rather large cutoff effects found in many gradient flow observables. At lowest order of perturbation theory we here study the leading cutoff effects in a finite volume gradient flow coupling with SF and SF-open boundary conditions. We confirm that O($a^2$) Symanzik improvement is achieved at tree-level, provided the action, observable and the flow are O($a^2$) improved. O($a^2$) effects from the time boundaries are found to be absent at this order, both with SF and SF-open boundary conditions. For the calculation we have used a convenient representation of the free gauge field propagator at finite flow times which follows from a recently proposed set-up by Lüscher and renders lattice perturbation theory more practical at finite flow time and with SF, open, SF-open or open-SF boundary conditions.

The chirally rotated Schrödinger functional: theoretical expectations and perturbative tests

The chirally rotated Schrödinger functional ($χ$SF) with massless Wilson-type fermions provides an alternative lattice regularization of the Schrödinger functional (SF), with different lattice symmetries and a common continuum limit expected from universality. The explicit breaking of flavour and parity symmetries needs to be repaired by tuning the bare fermion mass and the coefficient of a dimension 3 boundary counterterm. Once this is achieved one expects the mechanism of automatic O($a$) improvement to be operational in the $χ$SF, in contrast to the standard formulation of the SF. This is expected to significantly improve the attainable precision for step-scaling functions of some composite operators. Furthermore, the $χ$SF offers new strategies to determine finite renormalization constants which are traditionally obtained from chiral Ward identities. In this paper we consider a complete set of fermion bilinear operators, define corresponding correlation functions and explain the relation to their standard SF counterparts. We discuss renormalization and O($a$) improvement and then use this set-up to formulate the theoretical expectations which follow from universality. Expanding the correlation functions to one-loop order of perturbation theory we then perform a number of non-trivial checks. In the process we obtain the action counterterm coefficients to one-loop order and reproduce some known perturbative results for renormalization constants of fermion bilinears. By confirming the theoretical expectations, this perturbative study lends further support to the soundness of the $χ$SF framework and prepares the ground for non-perturbative applications.

The determination of $α_s$ by the ALPHA collaboration

We review the ALPHA collaboration strategy for obtaining the QCD coupling at high scale. In the three-flavor effective theory it avoids the use of perturbation theory at $α> 0.2$ and at the same time has the physical scales small compared to the cutoff $1/a$ in all stages of the computation. The result $Λ_\overline{MS}^{(3)}=332(14)$~MeV is translated to $α_\overline{MS}(m_Z)=0.1179(10)(2)$ by use of (high order) perturbative relations between the effective theory couplings at the charm and beauty quark "thresholds". The error of this perturbative step is discussed and estimated as $0.0002$.

A status update on the determination of $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{N_{\rm f}=3}$ by the ALPHA collaboration

The ALPHA collaboration aims to determine $α_s(m_Z)$ with a total error below the percent level. A further step towards this goal can be taken by combining results from the recent simulations of 2+1-flavour QCD by the CLS initiative with a number of tools developed over the years: renormalized couplings in finite volume schemes, recursive finite size techniques, two-loop renormalized perturbation theory and the (improved) gradient flow on the lattice. We sketch the strategy, which involves both the standard SF coupling in the high energy regime and a gradient flow coupling at low energies. This implies the need for matching both schemes at an intermediate switching scale, $L_{\rm swi}$, which we choose roughly in the range 2-4 GeV. In this contribution we present a preliminary result for this matching procedure, and we then focus on our almost final results for the scale evolution of the SF coupling from $L_{\rm swi}$ towards the perturbative regime, where we extract the $N_{\rm f} = 3$ $Λ$-parameter, $Λ_{\overline{\rm MS}}^{N_{\rm f}=3}$, in units of $L_{\rm swi}$ . Connecting $L_{\rm swi}$ and thus the $Λ$-parameter to a hadronic scale such as $F_K$ requires 2 further ingredients: first, the connection of $L_{\rm swi}$ to $L_{\rm max}$ using a few steps with the step-scaling function of the gradient flow coupling, and, second, the continuum extrapolation of $L_{\rm max} F_K$.

On O($a^2$) effects in gradient flow observables

In lattice gauge theories, the gradient flow has been used extensively both, for scale setting and for defining finite volume renormalization schemes for the gauge coupling. Unfortunately, rather large cutoff effects have been observed in some cases. We here investigate these effects to leading order in perturbation theory, considering various definitions of the lattice observable, the lattice flow equation and the Yang Mills lattice action. These considerations suggest an improved set- up for which we perform a scaling test in the pure SU(3) gauge theory, demonstrating strongly reduced cutoff effects. We then attempt to obtain a more complete understanding of the structure of O($a^2$) effects by applying Symanzik's effective theory approach to the 4+1 dimensional local field theory with flow time as the fifth dimension. From these considerations we are led to a fully O($a^2$) improved set-up the study of which is left to future work.

A dynamical study of the chirally rotated Schrödinger functional in QCD

The chirally rotated Schrödinger functional for Wilson-fermions allows for finite-volume, mass-independent renormalization schemes compatible with automatic O($a$) improvement. So far, in QCD, the set-up has only been studied in the quenched approximation. Here we present first results for $N_{\rm f} = 2$ dynamical quark-flavours for several renormalization factors of quark-bilinears. We discuss how these renormalization factors can be easily obtained from simple ratios of two-point functions, and show how automatic O($a$) improvement is at work. As a by-product of this investigation the renormalization of the non-singlet axial current, $Z_A$, is determined very precisely.

A perturbative study of the chirally rotated Schrödinger Functional in QCD

The chirally rotated Schrödinger functional ($χ$SF) renders the mechanism of automatic $O(a)$ improvement compatible with the Schrödinger functional (SF) formulation. Here we report on the determination to 1-loop order in perturbation theory of the renormalization coefficients necessary to achieve automatic $O(a)$ improvement and the boundary improvement coefficients needed to eliminate the extra boundary $O(a)$ effects present in any SF formulation. After this is done, we perform a set of tests of automatic $O(a)$ improvement and of the universality between standard and chirally rotated SF formulations.

Numerical Stochastic Perturbation Theory in the Schrödinger Functional

The Schrödinger functional (SF) is a powerful and widely used tool for the treatment of a variety of problems in renormalization and related areas. Albeit offering many conceptual advantages, one major downside of the SF scheme is the fact that perturbative calculations quickly become cumbersome with the inclusion of higher orders in the gauge coupling and hence the use of an automated perturbation theory framework is desirable. We present the implementation of the SF in numerical stochastic perturbation theory (NSPT) and compare first results for the running coupling at two loops in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory with the literature.

An O(a) modified lattice set-up of the Schrödinger functional in SU(3) gauge theory

The set-up of the QCD Schrödinger functional (SF) on the lattice with staggered quarks requires an even number of points $L/a$ in the spatial directions, while the Euclidean time extent of the lattice, $T/a$, must be odd. Identifying a unique renormalisation scale, $L=T$, is then only possible up to O($a$) lattice artefacts. In this article we study such lattices in the pure SU(3) gauge theory, where we can also compare to the standard set-up. We consider the SF coupling as obtained from the variation of an SU(3) Abelian and spatially constant background field. The O($a$) lattice artefacts can be cancelled by the existing O($a$) boundary counterterm. However, its coefficient, $\ct$, differs at the tree-level from its standard value, so that one first needs to re-determine the induced background gauge field. The perturbative one-loop correction to the coupling allows to determine $\ct$ to one-loop order. A few numerical simulations serve to demonstrate that residual cutoff effects in the step scaling function are small in both cases, $T=L\pm a$ and comparable to the standard case with $T=L$.

Lattice artefacts in the Schrödinger Functional coupling for strongly interacting theories

Models of Dynamical Electroweak Symmetry Breaking are expected to display a quasi-conformal scaling behaviour in order to accommodate experimental constraints. The scaling properties of a theory can be studied using finite volume renormalisation schemes. Among these, the most practical ones are based on the Schrödinger Functional (SF). However, lattices accessible in nu- merical simulations suffer from potentially large cutoff effects and special care has to be taken to remove these effects. Here we will study the standard setup of the SF with Wilson quarks and a setup with chirally rotated boundary conditions. We study the step scaling function for SU(2) and SU(3) gauge groups in the fundamental, 2-index symmetric and adjoint representations. We per- form the O(a)-improvement of both setups to 1-loop order in perturbation theory, and we describe a way of minimising higher order cutoff effects by a redefinition of the renormalised coupling.

Perturbative lattice artefacts in the SF coupling for technicolor-inspired models

Viable candidate theories for electroweak dynamical symmetry breaking are expected to show (near) conformal behaviour in order to accommodate current phenomenological constraints. In principle, renormalisation group studies using finite volume renormalisation schemes are well-suited to verify this property in a given model. The most practical schemes are based on the Schrodinger functional (SF), but suffer from potentially large O(a) effects. Some care has to be taken to remove these effects and to set up a scheme where cutoff effects are small and under control. We here take a step in this direction by analysing various set-ups for the SF coupling at one-loop order in perturbation theory.

The chirally rotated Schrödinger functional with Wilson fermions and automatic O(a) improvement

A modified formulation of the Schrödinger functional (SF) is proposed. In the continuum it is related to the standard SF by a non-singlet chiral field rotation and therefore referred to as the chirally rotated SF ($χ$SF). On the lattice with Wilson fermions the relation is not exact, suggesting some interesting tests of universality. The main advantage of the $χ$SF consists in its compatibility with the mechanism of automatic O($a$) improvement. In this paper the basic set-up is introduced and discussed. Chirally rotated SF boundary conditions are implemented on the lattice using an orbifold construction. The lattice symmetries imply a list of counterterms, which determine how the action and the basic fermionic two-point functions are renormalised and O($a$) improved. As with the standard SF, a logarithmically divergent boundary counterterm leads to a multiplicative renormalisation of the fermionic boundary fields. In addition, a finite dimension 3 boundary counterterm must be tuned in order to preserve the chirally rotated boundary conditions in the interacting theory. Once this is achieved, O($a$) effects originating from the bulk action or from insertions of composite operators in the bulk can be avoided by the mechanism of automatic O($a$) improvement. The remaining O($a$) effects arise from the boundaries and can be cancelled by tuning a couple of O($a$) boundary counterterms. The general results are illustrated in the free theory where the Sheikholeslami-Wohlert term is shown to affect correlation functions only at O($a^2$), irrespective of its coefficient.

Non-perturbative running of the coupling from four flavour lattice QCD with staggered quarks

Using the Schrödinger functional (SF) with a single staggered fermion field we calculate the SF coupling in four-flavour QCD for a wide range of energies and lattice sizes up to $L/a=16$. Preliminary results for the continuum extrapolation of the step-scaling function are presented. To reduce cutoff effects, one-loop ${\rm O}(a)$ improvement has been implemented. Various cross checks are made possible by the use of two independent sets of lattices with either $T=L+a$ or $T=L-a$.

Testing universality and automatic O(a) improvement in massless lattice QCD with Wilson quarks

The chirally rotated Schroedinger functional provides a test bed for universality and automatic O(a) improvement. We here report on extensive quenched simulations of lattice QCD with Wilson quarks in the massless limit. We demonstrate that, after proper tuning of a dimension 3 boundary counterterm, the expected chirally rotated boundary conditions are indeed obtained. This implies automatic O(a) improvement which we then verify in a few examples. Universality of properly renormalized correlation functions is confirmed by comparing to the standard set-up of the Schroedinger functional. As a by-product of this study the non-singlet current renormalisation constants Z_A and Z_V are obtained from ratios of 2-point functions.

Lattice QCD with a chirally twisted mass term

Lattice QCD with Wilson quarks and a chirally twisted mass term represents a promising alternative regularization of QCD, which does not suffer from unphysical fermion zero modes. We show how the correlation functions of the renormalized theory are related to the theory with a standard parameterization of the mass term. In particular we discuss the conditions under which these relations take the same form as obtained from naive continuum considerations. We discuss in detail some applications and comment on potential benefits and problems of this framework.

O(a) improved twisted mass lattice QCD

Lattice QCD with Wilson quarks and a chirally twisted mass term (tmQCD) has been introduced in refs. [1,2]. We here apply Symanzik's improvement programme to this theory and list the counterterms which arise at first order in the lattice spacing a. Based on the generalised transfer matrix, we define the tmQCD Schrodinger functional and use it to derive renormalized on-shell correlation functions. By studying their continuum approach in perturbation theory we then determine the new O(a) counterterms of the action and of a few quark bilinear operators to one-loop order.

The charm quark's mass in quenched QCD

We present our preliminary result for the charmed quark mass, which follows from taking the D_s and K meson masses from experiment and r0=0.5 fm (or, equivalently F_K=160 MeV) to set the scale. For the renormalization group invariant quark mass we obtain M_c = 1684(64) MeV, which translates to m_c(m_c)= 1314 (40)(20)(7) MeV for the running mass in the MSbar scheme. Renormalization is treated non-perturbatively, and the continuum limit has been taken, so that the only uncontrolled systematic error consists in the use of the quenched approximation.

A local formulation of lattice QCD without unphysical fermion zero modes

The problem of unphysical zero modes in lattice QCD with Wilson fermions can be solved in a clean way by including a mass term proportional to $i \psibar γ_5 τ^3 ψ$ in the standard lattice theory with Nf=2 mass degenerate Wilson quarks. We argue that up to cutoff effects, this lattice theory is equivalent to standard lattice QCD, for suitable choices of the mass parameters and with a natural re-interpretation of observables. On-shell O(a) improvement can be implemented in a straightforward way.

The running quark mass in the SF scheme and its two-loop anomalous dimension

The non-perturbatively defined running quark mass introduced by the ALPHA collaboration is based on the PCAC relation between correlation functions derived from the Schrödinger functional (SF). In order to complete its definition it remains to specify a number of parameters, including the ratio of time to spatial extent, $T/L$, and the angle $θ$ which appears in the spatial boundary conditions for the quark fields. We investigate the running mass in perturbation theory and propose a choice of parameters which attains two desired properties: firstly the two-loop anomalous dimension $\d1SF$ is reasonably small. This is needed in order to ease matching with the non-perturbative computations and to achieve a precise determination of the renormalization group invariant quark mass. Secondly, to one-loop order of perturbation theory, cut-off effects in the step-scaling function are small in O($a$) improved lattice QCD.

Non-perturbative determination of the axial current normalization constant in O(a) improved lattice QCD

A finite-size technique is employed to compute the normalization constant $Z_A$ of the isovector axial current in lattice QCD. The calculation is carried out in the quenched approximation for values of the bare gauge coupling $g_0$ ranging from 0 to 1. In the lattice action and the lattice expression for the axial current we include the counterterms required for O(a) improvement, with non-perturbatively determined coefficients. With little additional work the normalization constant $Z_V$ of the improved isospin current is also obtained.

Non-perturbative O(a) improvement of lattice QCD

The coefficients multiplying the counterterms required for O($a$) improvement of the action and the isovector axial current in lattice QCD are computed non-perturbatively, in the quenched approximation and for bare gauge couplings $g_0$ in the range $0 \leq g_0 \leq 1$. A finite-size method based on the Schrödinger functional is employed, which enables us to perform all calculations at zero or nearly zero quark mass. As a by-product the critical hopping parameter $κ_c$ is obtained at all couplings considered.

On the Schroedinger functional in QCD

In a series of publications [\ref{LNWW},\ref{Schroedinger}], Lüscher et al. have demonstrated the usefulness of the Schrödinger functional in pure SU(2) and SU(3) gauge theory. In this paper, it is shown how their formalism can be extended to include fermions. In the framework of Wilson's lattice QCD, we define the Schrödinger functional by making use of the transfer matrix formalism. Boundary conditions for the fermions arise naturally. We then take the naive continuum limit of the action and show that no lattice peculiarities are left over. The corresponding free Dirac operator has a unique self-adjoint extension with purely discrete spectrum and no zero modes.
