Loose edge-connection of graphs

In the last years, connection concepts such as rainbow connection and proper connection appeared in graph theory and obtained a lot of attention. In this paper, we investigate the loose edge-connection of graphs. A connected edge-coloured graph GG is loose edge-connected if between any two of its vertices there is a path of length one, or a bi-coloured path of length two, or a path of length at least three with at least three colours used on its edges. The minimum number of colours, used in a loose edge-colouring of GG, is called the loose edge-connection number and denoted $\lec(G)$. We determine the precise value of this parameter for any simple graph GG of diameter at least 3. We show that deciding, whether $\lec(G) = 2$ for graphs GG of diameter 2, is an NP-complete problem. Furthermore, we characterize all complete bipartite graphs Kr,sK_{r,s} with $\lec(K_{r,s}) = 2$.

On specific factors in graphs

It is well known that if G=(V,E)G = (V, E)} is a multigraph and X⊂VX\subset V is a subset of even order, then GG contains a spanning forest HH such that each vertex from XX has an odd degree in HH and all the other vertices have an even degree in HH. This spanning forest may have isolated vertices. If this is not allowed in HH, then the situation is much more complicated. In this paper, we study this problem and generalize the concepts of even-factors and odd-factors in a unified form.

On the cyclic coloring conjecture

A cyclic coloring of a plane graph GG is a coloring of its vertices such that vertices incident with the same face have distinct colors. The minimum number of colors in a cyclic coloring of a plane graph GG is its cyclic chromatic number χc(G)χ_c(G). Let Δ∗(G)Δ^*(G) be the maximum face degree of a graph GG. In this note we show that to prove the Cyclic Coloring Conjecture of Borodin from 1984, saying that every connected plane graph GG has χc(G)≤⌊32Δ∗(G)⌋χ_c(G) \leq \lfloor \frac{3}{2}Δ^*(G)\rfloor, it is enough to do it for subdivisions of simple 33-connected plane graphs. We have discovered four new different upper bounds on χc(G)χ_c(G) for graphs GG from this restricted family; three bounds of them are tight. As corollaries, we have shown that the conjecture holds for subdivisions of plane triangulations, simple 33-connected plane quadrangulations, and simple 33-connected plane pentagulations with an even maximum face degree, for regular subdivisions of simple 33-connected plane graphs of maximum degree at least 10, and for subdivisions of simple 33-connected plane graphs having the maximum face degree large enough in comparison with the number of vertices of their longest paths consisting only of vertices of degree two.
