Improved Bhabha cross section at LEP and the number of light neutrino species

In $\rm e^+ \rm e^-$ collisions, the integrated luminosity is generally measured from the rate of low-angle Bhabha interactions $\rm e^+ e^- \to e^+ e^- $. In the published LEP results, the inferred theoretical uncertainty of $\pm 0.061\%$ on the predicted rate is significantly larger than the reported experimental uncertainties. We present an updated and more accurate prediction of the Bhabha cross section in this letter, which is found to reduce the Bhabha cross section by about $0.048\%$, and its uncertainty to $\pm 0.037\%$. When accounted for, these changes modify the number of light neutrino species (and its accuracy), as determined from the LEP measurement of the hadronic cross section at the Z peak, to $N_ν= 2.9963 \pm 0.0074$. The 20-years-old $2 σ$ tension with the Standard Model is gone.

Theory challenges at future lepton colliders

High energy, high luminosity, future lepton colliders, circular or linear, may possibly give us hint about fundamental laws of Nature governing at very short distances and very short time intervals, the same which have brought our Universe to live. Currently considered projects are on one hand linear electron-positron colliders, which offer higher energy and lower beam intensities and on the other hand circular electron-positron colliders, limited in energy but offering tremendous interaction rates. On the far future horizon, muon circular colliders are the only viable projects which can explore $>10$TeV teritory of the lepton colliders. Experiments in all these future colliders will require theoretical calculations, mainly of Standard Model processes (including QED), at the precision level one or even two orders better than available today. After briefly characterization of theory puzzles in the fundamental interactions we shall overview main challenges in the precision calculations of the Standard Model effects, which have to be removed from data, in order to reveal traces of new unexpected phenomena.

Detrended Cross-Correlation Analysis Consistently Extended to Multifractality

We propose a novel algorithm - Multifractal Cross-Correlation Analysis (MFCCA) - that constitutes a consistent extension of the Detrended Cross-Correlation Analysis (DCCA) and is able to properly identify and quantify subtle characteristics of multifractal cross-correlations between two time series. Our motivation for introducing this algorithm is that the already existing methods like MF-DXA have at best serious limitations for most of the signals describing complex natural processes and often indicate multifractal cross-correlations when there are none. The principal component of the present extension is proper incorporation of the sign of fluctuations to their generalized moments. Furthermore, we present a broad analysis of the model fractal stochastic processes as well as of the real-world signals and show that MFCCA is a robust and selective tool at the same time, and therefore allows for a reliable quantification of the cross-correlative structure of analyzed processes. In particular, it allows one to identify the boundaries of the multifractal scaling and to analyze a relation between the generalized Hurst exponent and the multifractal scaling parameter $λ_q$. This relation provides information about character of potential multifractality in cross-correlations and thus enables a deeper insight into dynamics of the analyzed processes than allowed by any other related method available so far. By using examples of time series from stock market, we show that financial fluctuations typically cross-correlate multifractally only for relatively large fluctuations, whereas small fluctuations remain mutually independent even at maximum of such cross-correlations. Finally, we indicate possible utility of MFCCA to study effects of the time-lagged cross-correlations.

Monte Carlo study of NLO correction to QCD evolution kernel induced by the change of the factorization scale

The aim of the present study is to show that: the redefinition of the factorization scale $Q_i\to z_i Q_i$ in the ladder can be traded exactly for the NLO correction to the LO evolution kernel, $P(z)\to P(z)+(2C_F α_S/π)Δ(z)$ The above observation was done/exploited in the literature, but the present study demonstrates how this phenomenon is realized within the Markovian Monte Carlo parton shower - hence it might be relevant in MC practice.
