100 years of mathematical cosmology: Models, theories, and problems

An elementary survey of mathematical cosmology is presented. We cover certain key ideas and developments in a qualitative way, from the time of the Einstein static universe in 1917 until today. We divide our presentation into four main parts, the first part containing important cosmologies discovered until 1960. The second period (1960-80) contains discussions of geometric extensions of the standard cosmology, singularities, chaotic behaviour, and the initial input of particle physics ideas into cosmology. Our survey for the third period (1980-2000) continues with brief descriptions of the main ideas of inflation, the multiverse, quantum, Kaluza-Klein, and string cosmologies, wormholes and baby universes, cosmological stability, and modified gravity. The last period which ends today includes various more advanced topics such as M-theoretic cosmology, braneworlds, the landscape, topological issues, the measure problem, genericity, dynamical singularities, and dark energy. We emphasize certain threads that run throughout the whole period of development of theoretical cosmology and underline their importance in the overall structure of the field. We end this outline with an inclusion of the abstracts of all papers contributed to the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society A, Theme Issue `The Future of Mathematical Cosmology'.

Onset of synchronization in coupled Mixmaster oscillators

We consider the problem of asymptotic synchronization of different spatial points coupled to each other in inhomogeneous spacetime and undergoing chaotic Mixmaster oscillations towards the singularity. We demonstrate that for couplings larger than some threshold value, two Mixmaster spatial points $A,B$, with $A$ in the past of $B$, synchronize and thereby proceed in perfect unison towards the initial singularity. We further show that there is a Lyapunov function for the synchronization dynamics that makes different spatial points able to synchronize exponentially fast in the past direction. We provide an elementary proof of how an arbitrary spatial point responds to the mean field created by the oscillators, leading to their direct interaction through spontaneous synchronization. These results ascribe a clear physical meaning of early-time synchronization leading to a resetting effect for the two BKL maps corresponding to two distinct oscillating spatial points, as the two maps converge to each other to become indistinguishable at the end of synchronization. Our results imply that the universe generically organizes itself through simpler, synchronized, states as it approaches the initial singularity. A discussion of further implications of early-time inhomogeneous Mixmaster synchronization is also provided.

Regular braneworlds with bulk fluids

We review studies on the singularity structure and asymptotic analysis of a 3-brane (flat or curved) embedded in a five-dimensional bulk filled with a `perfect fluid' with an equation of state with the `pressure' and the `density' of the fluid depending on the fifth space coordinate. Regular solutions satisfying positive energy conditions in the bulk exist only in the cases of a flat brane with an EoS parameter equal to -1, or of AdS branes for EoS parameter values in suitable intervals. More cases can be found by gluing two regular branches of solutions at the position of the brane. However, only the case of a flat brane with an EoS parameter equal to -1 leads to finite Planck mass on the brane and thus localises gravity. In a more recent work, we showed that a way to rectify the previous findings and obtain a solution for a flat brane in a finite range of the EoS parameter, which is both free from finite-distance singularities and compatible with the physical conditions of energy and finiteness of four-dimensional Planck mass, is by introducing a bulk fluid component that satisfies a nonlinear equation of state.

Inflation Without a Trace of Lambda

We generalise Einstein's formulation of the traceless Einstein equations to $f(R)$ gravity theories. In the case of the vacuum traceless Einstein equations, we show that a non-constant Weyl tensor leads via a conformal transformation to a dimensionally homogeneous (`no-scale') theory in the conformal frame with a scalar field source that has an exponential potential. We then formulate the traceless version of $f(R)$ gravity, and we find that a conformal transformation leads to a no-scale theory conformally equivalent to general relativity and a scalar field $ϕ$ with a potential given by the scale-invariant form: $V(ϕ)=\frac{D-2}{4D}Re^{-ϕ}$, where $ϕ=[2/(D-2)]\ln f^{\prime }(R)$. In this theory, the cosmological constant is a mere integration constant, statistically distributed in a multiverse of independent causal domains, the vacuum energy is another unrelated arbitrary constant, and the same is true of the height of the inflationary plateau present in a huge variety of potentials. Unlike in the conformal equivalent of full general relativity, flat potentials are found to be possible in all spacetime dimensions for polynomial lagrangians of all orders. Hence, we are led to a novel interpretation of the cosmological constant vacuum energy problem and have accelerated inflationary expansion in the very early universe with a very small cosmological constant at late times for a wide range of no-scale theories. Fine-tunings required in traceless general relativity or standard non-traceless $f(R)$ theories of gravity are avoided. We show that the predictions of the scale-invariant conformal potential are completely consistent with microwave background observational data concerning the primordial tilt and the tensor-to-scalar ratio.

The Generic Sudden Singularity in Brans-Dicke Theory

We construct a formal asymptotic series expansion for a general solution of the Brans-Dicke equations with a fluid source near a sudden singularity. This solution contains eleven independent arbitrary functions of the spatial coordinates as required by the Cauchy problem of the theory. We show that the solution is geodesically complete and has the character of a shock wave in the sudden asymptotic region. This solution is weak in the senses of Tipler and Krolak as in the corresponding case of general relativity.

Asymptotic vacua with higher derivatives

We study limits of vacuum, isotropic universes in the full, effective, four-dimensional theory with higher derivatives. We show that all flat vacua as well as general curved ones are globally attracted by the standard, square root scaling solution at early times. Open vacua asymptote to horizon-free, Milne states in both directions while closed universes exhibit more complex logarithmic singularities, starting from initial data sets of a possibly smaller dimension. We also discuss the relation of our results to the asymptotic stability of the passage through the singularity in ekpyrotic and cyclic cosmologies.

Curved branes with regular support

We study spacetime singularities in a general five-dimensional braneworld with curved branes satisfying four-dimensional maximal symmetry. The bulk is supported by an analog of perfect fluid with the time replaced by the extra coordinate. We show that contrary to the existence of finite distance singularities from the brane location in any solution with flat (Minkowski) branes, in the case of curved branes there are singularity-free solutions for a range of equations of state compatible with the null energy condition.

The large-scale structure of the ambient boundary

This article gives a review of a recent construction, the ambient cosmological metric, and its implications for the global geometry of the universe. According to this proposal, the universe is a bounding hypersurface carrying a conformal structure and lying at the (conformal) infinity of a new, 5-geometry which satisfies the Einstein equations with fluid sources. We discuss our main results about the implied topological nature of the conformal infinity of the ambient metric, the non-existence of spacetime singularities on the boundary, as well as the validity of cosmic censorship as a direct consequence of a new principle on the boundary.

The regular state in higher-order gravity

We consider the higher-order gravity theory derived from the quadratic lagrangian $R+εR^2$ in vacuum as a first-order (ADM-type) system with constraints, and build time developments of solutions of an initial value formulation of the theory. We show that all such solutions, if analytic, contain the right number of free functions to qualify as general solutions of the theory. We further show that any regular analytic solution which satisfies the constraints and the evolution equations can be given in the form of an asymptotic formal power series expansion.

preprint2015arXiv

Ambient cosmology and spacetime singularities

We present a new approach to the issues of spacetime singularities and cosmic censorship in general relativity. This is based on the idea that standard 4-dimensional spacetime is the conformal infinity of an ambient metric for the 5-dimensional Einstein equations with fluid sources. We then find that the existence of spacetime singularities in four dimensions is constrained by asymptotic properties of the ambient 5-metric, while the non-degeneracy of the latter crucially depends on cosmic censorship holding on the boundary.

Topology of the ambient boundary and the convergence of causal curves

We discuss the topological nature of the boundary spacetime, the conformal infinity of the ambient cosmological metric. Due to the existence of a homothetic group, the bounding spacetime must be equipped not with the usual Euclidean metric topology but with the Zeeman fine topology. This then places severe constraints to the convergence of a sequence of causal curves and the extraction of a limit curve, and also to our ability to formulate conditions for singularity formation.

Enveloping branes and braneworld singularities

The existence of envelopes is studied for systems of differential equations in connection with the method of asymptotic splittings which allows to determine the singularity structure of the solutions. The result is applied to braneworlds consisting of a 3-brane in a five-dimensional bulk, in the presence of an analog of a bulk perfect fluid parametrizing a generic class of bulk matter. We find that all flat brane solutions suffer from a finite distance singularity contrary to previous claims. We then study the possibility of avoiding finite distance singularities by cutting the bulk and gluing regular solutions at the position of the brane. Further imposing physical conditions such as finite Planck mass on the brane and positive energy conditions on the bulk fluid, excludes however this possibility, as well.

Asymptotic Poincaré compactification and finite-time singularities

We provide an extension of the method of asymptotic decompositions of vector fields with finite-time singularities by applying the central extension technique of Poincaré to the dominant part of the vector field on approach to the singularity. This leads to a bundle of fan-out asymptotic systems whose equilibria at infinity govern the dynamics of the asymptotic solutions of the original system. We show how this method can be useful to describe a single-fluid isotropic universe at the time of maximum expansion, and discuss possible relations of our results to structural stability and non-compact phase spaces.

Asymptotic states of generalized universes with higher derivatives

We review ongoing research related to the asymptotic dynamics of isotropic universes in theories with higher derivatives, especially near the initial singularity. We treat two major cases, that is universes in vacuum, and also those filled with radiation using the method of asymptotic splittings of vector fields. Our solutions have the form of formal Fuchsian-type series for the basic unknowns and are valid near collapse or big rip regimes asymptotically.

preprint2013arXiv

Flat limits of curved interacting cosmic fluids

We study curved isotropic cosmologies filled with two interacting fluids near their time singularities. We find that a number of these universes asymptote to flat limits in the sense that their asymptotic properties become indistinguishable from those of flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker models on approach to the singularity along any asymptotic direction. In particular, there are no essential singularities in these models. We discuss connections of this result with possible extensions of the cosmic no hair theorem to the case of two interacting fluids, and also provide links to a quantum cosmological treatment of real and complex Euclidean such solutions.

preprint2013arXiv

The initial state of generalized radiation universes

We use asymptotic methods to study the early time stability of isotropic and homogeneous solutions filled with radiation which are close initially to the exact, flat, radiation solution in quadratic lagrangian theories of gravity. For such models, we analyze all possible modes of approach to the initial singularity and prove the essential uniqueness and stability of the resulting asymptotic scheme in all cases except perhaps that of the conformally invariant Bach-Weyl gravity. We also provide a formal series representation valid near the initial singularity of the general solution of these models and show that this is dominated at early times by a form in which both curvature and radiation play a subdominant role. We also discuss the implications of these results for the generic initial state of the theory.

Brane singularities with mixtures in the bulk

By extending previous analysis of the authors, a systematic study of the singularity structure and possible asymptotic behaviors of five-dimensional braneworld solutions is performed in the case where the bulk is a mixture of an analog of perfect fluid (with a density and pressure depending on the extra coordinate) and a massless scalar field. The two bulk components interact by exchanging energy so that the total energy is conserved. In a particular range of the interaction parameters, we find flat brane general solutions avoiding the singularity at finite distance from the brane, in the same region of the equation of state constant parameter $γ=P/ρ$ that we found previously in the absence of the bulk scalar field $(-1<γ<-1/2)$.

preprint2012arXiv

Singularities in cosmologies with interacting fluids

We study the dynamics near finite-time singularities of flat isotropic universes filled with two interacting but otherwise arbitrary perfect fluids. The overall dynamical picture reveals a variety of asymptotic solutions valid locally around the spacetime singularity. We find the attractor of all solutions with standard decay, and for `phantom' matter asymptotically at early times. We give a number of special asymptotic solutions describing universes collapsing to zero size and others ending at a big rip singularity. We also find a very complicated singularity corresponding with a logarithmic branch point that resembles of cyclic universe, and give an asymptotic local series representation of the general solution in the neighborhood of infinity.

preprint2010arXiv

Brane singularities and their avoidance in a fluid bulk

Using the method of asymptotic splittings, the possible singularity structures and the corresponding asymptotic behavior of a 3-brane in a five-dimensional bulk are classified, in the case where the bulk field content is parametrized by an analog of perfect fluid with an arbitrary equation of state $P=γρ$ between the `pressure' $P$ and the `density' $ρ$. In this analogy with homogeneous cosmologies, the time is replaced by the extra coordinate transverse to the 3-brane, whose world-volume can have an arbitrary constant curvature. The results depend crucially on the constant parameter $γ$: (i) For $γ>-1/2$, the flat brane solution suffers from a collapse singularity at finite distance, that disappears in the curved case. (ii) For $γ<-1$, the singularity cannot be avoided and it becomes of the type big rip for a flat brane. (iii) For $-1<γ\le -1/2$, the surprising result is found that while the curved brane solution is singular, the flat brane is not, opening the possibility for a revival of the self-tuning proposal.

Talking About Singularities

We discuss some aspects of recent research as well as more general issues about motivation, useful methods and open problems in the field of cosmological singularities. In particular, we review some of the approaches to the general area and include discussions of the method of asymptotic splittings, singularity and completeness theorems and the use of the Bel-Robinson energy to prove completeness theorems and classify cosmological singularities.

A note on wavemap-tensor cosmologies

We examine theories of gravity which include finitely many coupled scalar fields with arbitrary couplings to the curvature (wavemaps). We show that the most general scalar-tensor $σ$-model action is conformally equivalent to general relativity with a minimally coupled wavemap with a particular target metric. Inflation on the source manifold is then shown to occur in a novel way due to the combined effect of arbitrary curvature couplings and wavemap self-interactions. A new interpretation of the conformal equivalence theorem proved for such `wavemap-tensor' theories through brane-bulk dynamics is also discussed.

Current Trends in Mathematical Cosmology

We present an elementary account of mathematical cosmology through a series of important unsolved problems. We introduce the fundamental notion of `a cosmology' and focus on the issue of singularities as a theme unifying many current, seemingly unrelated trends of this subject. We discuss problems associated with the definition and asymptotic structure of the notion of cosmological solution and also problems related to the qualification of approximations and to the ranges of validity of given cosmologies.

Symmetries of homogeneous cosmologies

We reformulate the dynamics of homogeneous cosmologies with a scalar field matter source with an arbitrary self-interaction potential in the language of jet bundles and extensions of vector fields. In this framework, the Bianchi-scalar field equations become subsets of the second Bianchi jet bundle, $J^2$, and every Bianchi cosmology is naturally extended to live on a variety of $J^2$. We are interested in the existence and behaviour of extensions of arbitrary Bianchi-Lie and variational vector fields acting on the Bianchi variety and accordingly we classify all such vector fields corresponding to both Bianchi classes $A$ and $B$. We give examples of functions defined on Bianchi jet bundles which are constant along some Bianchi models (first integrals) and use these to find particular solutions in the Bianchi total space. We discuss how our approach could be used to shed new light to questions like isotropization and the nature of singularities of homogeneous cosmologies by examining the behaviour of the variational vector fields and also give rise to interesting questions about the `evolution' and nature of the cosmological symmetries themselves.
