Algebraic subdivision in simplicially controlled categories

We generalise the notion of subdivision of a finite-dimensional locally finite simplicial complex $X$ to geometric algebra, namely to the simplicially controlled categories $\mathbb{A}^*(X)$, $\mathbb{A}_*(X)$ of Ranicki and Weiss. We prove a squeezing result: a bounded chain equivalence of sufficiently algebraically subdivided chain complexes can be squeezed to a simplicially controlled chain equivalence of the unsubdivided chain complexes. Giving $X\times\mathbb{R}$ a bounded triangulation measured in the open cone $O(X_+)$ we use algebraic subdivision to define a functor $\mathrm{"}-\otimes\mathbb{Z}\mathrm{"}:\mathbb{B}(\mathbb{A}(X))\to \mathbb{B}(\mathbb{A}(X\times\mathbb{R}))$ that corresponds to tensoring with the simplicial chain complex of $\mathbb{Z}$ and algebraically subdividing to be bounded over $O(X_+)$. We show that $C\simeq 0 \in \mathbb{B}(\mathbb{A}(X))$ if and only if $\mathrm{"}C\otimes\mathbb{Z}\mathrm{"}$ is boundedly chain contractible over $O(X_+)$. These results have applications to Poincaré duality and homology manifold detection as a finite-dimensional locally finite simplicial complex $X$ is a homology manifold if and only if it has $X$-controlled Poincaré duality. We prove a Poincaré duality squeezing theorem that such a space $X$ with sufficiently controlled Poincaré duality must have $X$-controlled Poincaré duality and we prove a Poincaré duality splitting theorem with the consequence that $X$ is a homology manifold if and only if $X\times\mathbb{R}$ has bounded Poincaré duality over $O(X_+)$.

A controlled local-global theorem for simplicial complexes

In this paper we prove that a simplicial map of finite-dimensional locally finite simplicial complexes has contractible point inverses if and only if it is an $ε$-controlled homotopy equivalence for all $ε>0$ if and only if $f\times \mathrm{id}_\mathbb{R}$ is a bounded homotopy equivalence measured in the open cone over the target. This confirms for such a space $X$ the slogan that arbitrarily fine control over $X$ corresponds to bounded control over the open cone $O(X_+)$. For the proof a one parameter family of cellulations $\{X_ε^\prime\}_{0<ε<ε(X)}$ is constructed which provides a retracting map for $X$ which can be used to compensate for sufficiently small control.

Homeomorphisms, homotopy equivalences and chain complexes

This thesis concerns the relationship between bounded and controlled topology and how these can be used to recognise which homotopy equivalences of reasonable topological spaces are homotopic to homeomorphisms. Let $f:X\to Y$ be a simplicial map of finite-dimensional locally finite simplicial complexes. We prove that $f$ has contractible point inverses if and only if it is an $ε$-controlled homotopy equivalences for all $ε>0$, if and only if $f\times\mathrm{id}:X\times\mathbb{R} \to Y\times\mathbb{R}$ is a homotopy equivalence bounded over the open cone $O(Y^+)$ of Pedersen and Weibel. This approach can be generalised to algebra using geometric categories: the $X$-controlled categories $\mathbb{A}^*(X)$, $\mathbb{A}_*(X)$ of Ranicki and Weiss together with the bounded categories $\mathcal{C}_M(\mathbb{A})$ of Pedersen and Weibel. Analogous to the barycentric subdivision of a simplicial complex, we define the algebraic subdivision of a chain complex over that simplicial complex. The main theorem of the thesis is that a chain complex $C$ is chain contractible in $\mathbb{A}(X)$ if and only if $\textit{"}C\otimes\mathbb{Z}\textit{"}\in\mathbb{A}(X\times\mathbb{R})$ is boundedly chain contractible when measured in $O(X^+)$ for a functor $\textit{"}-\otimes\mathbb{Z}\textit{"}$ defined appropriately using algebraic subdivision and for $\mathbb{A}=\mathbb{A}^*$ or $\mathbb{A}_*$. We prove a squeezing result: a chain complex with a small enough chain contraction has arbitrarily small chain contractions. We conclude with consequences for Poincaré Duality spaces. Squeezing tells us that a $PL$ Poincaré duality space with small enough Poincaré duality is a homology manifold and the main theorem tells us that a $PL$ Poincaré duality space $X$ is a homology manifold if and only if $X\times\mathbb{R}$ has bounded Poincaré duality when measured in the open cone $O(X^+)$.

Triangular homotopy equivalences

A map $f:X\to Y$ to a simplicial complex $Y$ is called a $Y$-triangular homotopy equivalence if it has a homotopy inverse $g$ and homotopies $h_1:f\circ g\simeq \mathrm{id}_Y$, $h_2:g\circ f\simeq \mathrm{id}_X$ such that for all simplices $σ\in Y$, $f|_σ:f^{-1}(σ) \to σ$ is a homotopy equivalence with inverse $g|_σ:σ\to f^{-1}(σ)$ and homotopies $h_1|_σ$ and $h_2|_σ$. In this paper we prove that for all pairs $X,Y$ of finite-dimensional locally finite simplicial complexes there is an $ε(X,Y)>0$ such that any $ε$-controlled homotopy equivalence $f:X\to Y$ for $ε<ε(X,Y)$ is homotopic to a $Y$-triangular homotopy equivalence. Conversely, we conjecture that it is possible to `subdivide' a $Y$-triangular homotopy equivalence by finding a homotopic $(Sd\, Y)$-triangular homotopy equivalence, consequently a $Y$-triangular homotopy equivalence would be homotopic to an $ε$-controlled homotopy equivalence for all $ε>0$.
