Estimating Hidden Asymptomatics, Herd Immunity Threshold and Lockdown Effects using a COVID-19 Specific Model

A quantitative COVID-19 model that incorporates hidden asymptomatic patients is developed, and an analytic solution in parametric form is given. The model incorporates the impact of lockdown and resulting spatial migration of population due to announcement of lockdown. A method is presented for estimating the model parameters from real-world data. It is shown that increase of infections slows down and herd immunity is achieved when symptomatic patients are 4-6\% of the population for the European countries we studied, when the total infected fraction is between 50-56 \%. Finally, a method for estimating the number of asymptomatic patients, who have been the key hidden link in the spread of the infections, is presented.

Partial Breaking of Three-Fold Symmetry via Percolation of a Domain Wall

We show that suppression of vortex strings splits the order-disorder transition in the three-state Potts ferromagnet on a simple cubic lattice and opens up an intermediate phase characterized by partial breaking of the three-fold symmetry and long-range order. In contrast, suppression of vortices in the same model on a square lattice results in an intermediate phase with enhanced U(1) symmetry and quasi-long-range order. We show that the difference between the two phases originates from distinct patterns of domain wall proliferation. A domain wall, separating the two most populous spin states, percolates on its own in the former phase but remains at a percolation threshold in the latter.

Quasi Long Range Order and Vortex Lattice in the Three State Potts Model

We show that the order-disorder phase transition in the three state Potts ferromagnet on a square lattice is driven by a coupled proliferation of vortices and domain walls. Raising the vortex core energy above a certain value decouples the proliferation and splits the transition into two. The phase between the two transitions exhibits an emergent U(1) symmetry and quasi long range order. Lowering the core energy also splits the order-disorder transition but the proliferation does not decouple and a vortex lattice appears as the intermediate phase.

U(1) Emergence versus Chiral Symmetry Restoration in the Ashkin Teller Model

We show that suppression of vortices in the Ashkin Teller ferromagnet on a square lattice splits the order-disorder transition and opens up an intermediate phase where the macroscopic symmetry enhances to U(1). When we selectively suppress the formation of non-chiral vortices, chiral vortices proliferate and replace the U(1) phase with a new phase where chiral symmetry is restored. This result demonstrates a fascinating phenomenon in which the symmetry information encoded in topological defects manifests itself in the symmetry of the phase where the defects proliferate. We also show that this phenomenon can occur in all $\mathbb{Z}_n$ ferromagnets with even values of $n$.
