Constructing approximate shell-model wavefunctions by eigenvector continuation

Shell-model calculations play a key role in elucidating various properties of nuclei. In general, those studies require a huge number of calculations to be repeated for parameter calibration and quantifying uncertainties. To reduce the computational burden, we propose a new workflow of shell-model calculations using a method called eigenvector continuation (EC). It enables us to efficiently approximate the eigenpairs under a given Hamiltonian by previously sampled eigenvectors. We demonstrate the validity of EC as an emulator of the valence shell-model, including first application of EC to electromagnetic transition matrix elements. Furthermore, we propose a new usage of EC: preprocessing, in which we start the Lanczos iterations from the approximate eigenvectors, and demonstrate that this can accelerate subsequent research cycles. With the aid of the EC, the eigenvectors obtained during the parameter optimization are not necessarily to be discarded, even if their eigenvalues are far from the experimental data. Those eigenvectors can become accumulated knowledge.

Exploring medium mass nuclei using effective chiral nucleon-nucleon interactions

In the past decades, it has been shown that the three-body force is necessary for a fully microscopic understanding of nuclear many-body systems, and thus efficient schemes for storing and utilizing three-body matrix elements have been developed. However, three-body matrix elements still demand a lot of memory and/or storage and it readily exceeds the limitation of the state-of-the-art supercomputers. We explore the possibility of mimicking the effects of three-body forces in medium-mass region, especially lower $pf$ shell, by density-dependent effective nucleon-nucleon interactions combining with a modern family of chiral nucleon-nucleon interaction and an uncertainty quantification on the coupling constants. We found that some effective nucleon-nucleon potentials give decent description of ground state energies, but also systematic underestimation in charge radii and deficiencies relevant to the $pf$-shell region.

Non-parametric Bayesian approach to extrapolation problems in configuration interaction methods

We propose a non-parametric extrapolation method based on constrained Gaussian processes for configuration interaction methods. Our method has many advantages: (i) applicability to small data sets such as results of {\it ab initio} methods, (ii) flexibility to incorporate constraints, which are guided by physics, into the extrapolation model, (iii) providing predictions with quantified extrapolation uncertainty, etc. In the present study, we show an application to the extrapolation needed in full configuration interaction method as an example.
