Dark energy and accelerating cosmological evolution from osculating Barthel-Kropina geometry

Finsler geometry is an important extension of Riemann geometry, in which to each point of the spacetime manifold an arbitrary internal variable is associated. Interesting Finsler geometries, with many physical applications, are the Randers and Kropina type geometries, respectively. A subclass of Finsler geometries is represented by the osculating Finsler spaces, in which the internal variable is a function of the base manifold coordinates only. In an osculating Finsler geometry one introduces the Barthel connection, which has the remarkable property that it is the Levi-Civita connection of a Riemannian metric. In the present work we consider the gravitational and cosmological implications of a Barthel-Kropina type geometry. We assume that in this geometry the Ricci type curvatures are related to the matter energy-momentum tensor by the standard Einstein equations. The generalized Friedmann equations in the Barthel-Kropina geometry are obtained by considering that the background Riemannian metric is of Friedmann-Lemaitre-Robertson-Walker type. The matter energy balance equation is also derived. The cosmological properties of the model are investigated in detail, and it is shown that the model admits a de Sitter type solution, and that an effective dark energy component can also be generated. Several cosmological solutions are also obtained by numerically integrating the generalized Friedmann equations. A comparison of two specific classes of models with the observational data and with the standard $Λ$CDM model is also performed, and it turns out that the Barthel-Kropina type models give a satisfactory description of the observations.

Finslerian geometrization of quantum mechanics in the hydrodynamical representation

We consider a Finslerian type geometrization of the non-relativistic quantum mechanics in its hydrodynamical (Madelung) formulation, by also taking into account the effects of the presence of the electromagnetic fields on the particle motion. In the Madelung representation the Schrödinger equation can be reformulated as the classical continuity and Euler equations of classical fluid mechanics in the presence of a quantum potential, representing the quantum hydrodynamical evolution equations. The equation of particle motion can then be obtained from a Lagrangian similar to its classical counterpart. After the reparametrization of the Lagrangian it turns out that the Finsler metric describing the geometric properties of quantum hydrodynamics is a Kropina metric. We present and discuss in detail the metric and the geodesic equations describing the geometric properties of the quantum motion in the presence of electromagnetic fields. As an application of the obtained formalism we consider the Zermelo navigation problem in a quantum hydrodynamical system, whose solution is given by a Kropina metric. The case of the Finsler geometrization of the quantum hydrodynamical motion of spinless particles in the absence of electromagnetic interactions is considered in detail, and the Zermelo navigation problem for this case is also discussed.

The Co-Points of Rays are Cut Points of Upper Level Sets for Busemann Functions

We show that the co-rays to a ray in a complete non-compact Finsler manifold contain geodesic segments to upper level sets of Busemann functions. Moreover, we characterise the co-point set to a ray as the cut locus of such level sets. The structure theorem of the co-point set on a surface, namely that is a local tree, and other properties follow immediately from the known results about the cut locus. We point out that some of our findings, in special the relation of co-point set to the upper lever sets, are new even for Riemannian manifolds.

Kosambi-Cartan-Chern (KCC) theory for higher order dynamical systems

The Kosambi-Cartan-Chern (KCC) theory represents a powerful mathematical method for the investigation of the properties of dynamical systems. The KCC theory introduces a geometric description of the time evolution of a dynamical system, with the solution curves of the dynamical system described by methods inspired by the theory of geodesics in a Finsler spaces. The evolution of a dynamical system is geometrized by introducing a non-linear connection, which allows the construction of the KCC covariant derivative, and of the deviation curvature tensor. In the KCC theory the properties of any dynamical system are described in terms of five geometrical invariants, with the second one giving the Jacobi stability of the system. Usually, the KCC theory is formulated by reducing the dynamical evolution equations to a set of second order differential equations. In the present paper we introduce and develop the KCC approach for dynamical systems described by systems of arbitrary $n$-dimensional first order differential equations. We investigate in detail the properties of the $n$-dimensional autonomous dynamical systems, as well as the relationship between the linear stability and the Jacobi stability. As a main result we find that only even-dimensional dynamical systems can exhibit both Jacobi stability and instability behaviors, while odd-dimensional dynamical systems are always Jacobi unstable, no matter their Lyapunov stability. As applications of the developed formalism we consider the geometrization and the study of the Jacobi stability of the complex dynamical networks, and of the $Λ$-Cold Dark Matter cosmological models, respectively.

Generalized Finsler structures on closed 3-manifolds

An (I,J,K)-generalized Finsler structure on a 3-manifold is a generalization of a Finslerian structure, introduced in order to separate and clarify the local and global aspects in Finsler geometry making use of the Cartan's method of exterior differential systems. In this paper, we show that there is a close relation between (I,J,1)-generalized Finsler structures and a class of contact circles, namely the so-called Cartan structures. This correspondence allows us to determine the topology of 3-manifolds that admit (I, J, 1)-generalized Finsler structures and to single out classes of (I, J, 1)-generalized Finsler structures induced by standard Cartan structures.

The cut locus and distance function from a closed subset of a Finsler manifold

We characterize the differentiable points of the distance function from a closed subset $N$ of an arbitrary dimensional Finsler manifold in terms of the number of $N$-segments. In the case of a 2-dimensional Finsler manifold, we prove the structure theorem of the cut locus of a closed subset $N$, namely that it is a local tree, it is made of countably many rectifiable Jordan arcs except for the endpoints of the cut locus and that an intrinsic metric can be introduced in the cut locus and its intrinsic and induced topologies coincide. We should point out that these are new results even for Riemannian manifolds.
