Glueball-Meson Mixing In Holographic QCD

Top-down holographic QCD models often work in the "probe" (or "quenched") limit, which assumes that the number of colors is much greater than the number of flavors. Relaxing this limit is essential to a fuller understanding of holography and more accurate phenomenological predictions. In this work, we focus on a mixing of glueball and meson mass eigenstates that arises from the DBI action as a finite Nf/Nc effect. For concreteness, we work in the Witten-Sakai-Sugimoto model, and show that this mixing must be treated in conjunction with the backreaction of the flavor branes onto the background geometry. Including the backreaction with the simplification that it is "smeared out" over the compact transverse direction, we derive a corrected effective action for the vector glueball and scalar states. Along the way, we observe a Stueckelberg-like mechanism that restores translation invariance in the transverse direction. We also derive a general technique, that lends itself easily to numerics, for finding mass eigenstates of Lagrangians with vector-scalar mixing. We then calculate the first order corrections to the mass spectra of both the vector and scalar particles, and show that the term that explicitly mixes vector and scalar states is the most significant correction to the masses of low-lying scalar mesons.

Unparticles as the Holographic Dual of Gapped AdS Gravity

Naively applying holographic duality to gapped gravity on Anti de Sitter (AdS) space seems to suggest that the stress tensor of the field theory dual cannot be conserved. On the other hand, by symmetry arguments, it seems that the dual should not violate Poincare symmetry. To clarify this apparent contradiction, we study a holographic dual of massive gravity where both the physical background metric and the fiducial metric are AdS. Using the anomalous scaling of the energy momentum tensor as our guide, we conclude that the dual theory is nonlocal. We find that the dual is similar to conformal invariant "unparticle" theories. We show that such theories can be viewed as dimensional reductions of flat-space field theories with inhomogeneous scaling properties.

Central Production of Eta and Eta-prime via Double Pomeron Exchange in the Sakai-Sugimoto Model

We construct a string-inspired model for the central production of $η$ and $η'$ mesons in proton-proton collisions, via double Pomeron exchange. Using general symmetry considerations, we construct a low-energy differential cross section for double glueball exchange in terms of some undetermined coupling constants and form factors. We extend this model to the Regge regime, replacing the glueball propagators with Pomeron trajectories, and modifying the interaction term by a factor derived from the 5-string scattering amplitude in flat space. We then fix the couplings which remain undetermined, using the Sakai-Sugimoto framework to model low-energy QCD. Finally, we generate a simulation of the scattering process at $\sqrt{s} = 29.1 GeV$, where double Pomeron exchange should play a role (secondary to double Reggeon exchange). We focus on the dependence of the scattering cross section on the angle between the scattered protons in the transverse plane. The results exhibit a definite deviation from the angular dependence that arises as a consequence of natural parity violation alone. The amount of deviation is primarily determined by couplings that come from the Chern-Simons action of the AdS/QCD supergravity dual, which is directly related to the QCD gravitational anomaly, and thus constitutes a universal part of any five-dimensional string/gravity dual theory of QCD. We argue that this makes the high energy central production of pseudoscalar mesons an interesting probe of AdS/QCD models.

On Effective Actions from Holography

Inspired by holographic Wilsonian renormalization, we propose a novel perspective on the low-energy effective actions of confining gauge theories with gravity duals. By identifying the IR-boundary value of a certain bulk field as overlapping with the lightest mode of the field theory, we derive its on-shell effective action by integrating over the rest of the geometry. We illustrate the details of this formalism by computing chiral Lagrangian coefficients in a simple AdS/QCD toy model, finding agreement with previous results. At higher orders we obtain new results in that model, including a closed form for the four-pion scattering amplitude to all orders in momentum. Finally, we reformulate our method in terms of bulk Feynman diagrams.

Deformation Constraints on Solitons and D-branes

We derive a set of constraints on soliton solutions using geometric deformations, and transformations by internal symmetries with space-dependent parameters. We show that Derrick's theorem and a more complete set of constraints due to Manton are special cases of these deformation constraints (DC). We demonstrate also that known soliton solutions obey the DC, and extract novel results by applying the constraints to systems of D-branes, taking into account both Dirac-Born-Infeld and Wess-Zumino actions, and examining cases with and without D-brane gauge fields. We also determine a relation with the Hamiltonian constraint for gravitational systems, and discuss configurations of finite extent, like Wilson lines.

Stability conditions for spatially modulated phases

We introduce a novel set of stability conditions for vacua with broken Lorentz symmetry. The first class of conditions require that the energy be minimized under small geometric deformations, which translates into requiring the positivity of a "stiffness" four-tensor. The second class of conditions requires that stress forces be restoring under small deformations. We then apply these conditions to examples of recently-discovered spatially modulated (or "striped") phases in holographic models of superconductors and high-density QCD. For backreacted solutions we find that the pressure condition is equivalent to thermodynamic stability. For probe solutions, however, these conditions are in conflict with the minimization of the free energy. This suggests that either the solutions are unstable or the definition of the free energy in the probe approximation must be revised for these solutions.

Holographic Josephson Junctions and Berry holonomy from D-branes

We construct a holographic model for Josephson junctions with a defect system of a Dp brane intersecting a D(p+2) brane. In addition to providing a geometrical picture for the holographic dual, this leads us very naturally to suggest the possibility of non-Abelian Josephson junctions characterized in terms of the topological properties of the branes. The difference between the locations of the endpoints of the Dp brane on either side of the defect translates into the phase difference of the condensate in the Josephson junction. We also add a magnetic flux on the D(p+2) brane and allow it evolve adiabatically along a closed curve in the space of the magnetic flux, while generating a non-trivial Berry holonomy.

Successes and Failures of a More Comprehensive Hard Wall AdS/QCD

We explore corrections to the "hard wall" gravity dual of QCD with two-form tensor fields. These fields correspond to a dimension three quark bilinear in QCD, which generates states with 1(--) and 1(+-) quantum numbers, or omega/rho-like and h1/b1-like mesons, respectively. We include new interaction terms, which render the model complete up to dimension six. We find that breaking chiral symmetry induces modifications to the spectrum, by mixing the vector current and the new two-tensor operator. This breaks the degeneracy of the 1(--) and 1(+-) spectra. We also compute the (b1->omega + pi) decay rate and D/S ratio, and the couplings of excited rho states to two pions. We then perform a comprehensive new fit to QCD data. We obtain a value for the magnetic susceptibility of the QCD quark condensate which is consistent with phenomenological estimates. These results allow us to evaluate the success of dimension counting and UV matching in this model.

Completing the framework of AdS/QCD: h_1/b_1 mesons and excited omega/rho's

We extend the "hard wall" gravity dual of QCD by including tensor fields b_{MN} that correspond to the QCD quark bilinear operators qbar sigma^{mu nu} q. These fields give rise to a spectrum of states which include the h_1 and b_1 mesons, as well as a tower of excited omega/rho meson states. We also identify the lowest-dimension term which leads to mixing between the new rho states and the usual tower of rho mesons when chiral symmetry is broken.

Setting the scale of the p p and p bar p total cross sections using AdS/QCD

This paper is an addendum to our earlier paper \cite{pom} where we computed the Pomeron contribution to $p ~ p$ and $p ~ \bar p$ scattering in AdS/QCD. The model of \cite{pom} depends on four parameters: the slope and intercept of the Pomeron trajectory $α'_c, α_c(0)$, a mass scale $M_d$ which determines a form factor entering into matrix elements of the energy-momentum tensor, and a coupling $λ_{\cal P}$ between the lightest spin $2$ glueball and the proton which sets the overall scale of the total cross section. Here we perform a more detailed computation of $λ_{\cal P}$ in the Sakai-Sugimoto model using the construction of nucleons as instantons of the dual 5d gauge theory and an effective 5d fermion description of these nucleons which has been successfully used to compute a variety of nucleon-meson couplings. We find $λ_{\cal P,{\rm SS}} \simeq 6.38 ~ {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ which is in reasonable agreement with the value $λ_{{\cal P},{\rm fit}} = 8.28 ~ {\rm GeV}^{-1}$ determined by fitting single Pomeron exchange to data.

The Pomeron contribution to p p and p bar p scattering in AdS/QCD

We consider the differential and total cross sections for proton-proton and proton-antiproton scattering in the Regge regime from the point of view of string dual models of QCD. We argue that the form factor which appears in the differential cross section is related to the matrix element of the stress tensor between proton states and give a procedure for computing the strength of the coupling of the Pomeron trajectory to the proton. We compute this coupling in the Sakai-Sugimoto model and find excellent agreement with the data at large $s$ and small $t$. The form factor can be estimated in the Skyrme model or in AdS/QCD models and gives a stiffer form factor than the commonly used electromagnetic form factor, in agreement with our fits to data. Our model is also in good agreement with the measured ratio of real to imaginary parts of the forward scattering amplitude at large $s$.
