Self-energy problem, vacuum polarization, and dual symmetry in Born-Infeld-type $U(1)$ gauge theories

We extensively explore three different aspects of Born-Infeld (BI) type nonlinear $U(1)$ gauge-invariant modifications of Maxwell's classical electrodynamics (also known as BI-type nonlinear electrodynamics) and bring some new perspectives on these theories. First, within the framework of exponential $U(1)$ gauge theory, it is explicitly proved that although the electric field at the location of the elementary point charges is not finite, but the total electrostatic field energy is finite. Motivated by this observation together with a wealth of evidence, we conjecture that all theories in 4-dimensional spacetime that belong to the BI family result in finite self-energy for elementary charged particles. In higher dimensions, it is found that the weak-field coupling limit of BI-type theories, which is identified as the weak field limit of effective Euler-Heisenberg (EH) theory, does not possess a regularizing ability to make the self-energy of a point charge finite, which implies that the conjecture may not hold for some BI-type theories. However, we explicitly prove that BI, logarithmic and exponential $U(1)$ gauge theories in arbitrary dimensions result in finite self-energy as well. Next, we classically study the problem of vacuum polarization effects and then systematically make a connection between all BI-type theories and QED. It is shown that all the BI-type theories classically predict the vacuum polarization effects, in which the final results are exactly in one-to-one correspondence with QED and the effective EH theory up to the leading order of corrections. Finally, we present a new, simple proof indicating that ...

Holographic Heat Engines Coupled with Logarithmic $U(1)$ Gauge Theory

In this paper we study a new class of holographic heat engines via charged AdS black hole solutions of Einstein gravity coupled with logarithmic nonlinear $U(1)$ gauge theory. So, Logarithmic $U(1)$ AdS black holes with a horizon of positive, zero and negative constant curvatures are considered as a working substance of a holographic heat engine and the corrections to the usual Maxwell field are controlled by non-linearity parameter $β$. The efficiency of an ideal cycle ($η$), consisting of a sequence of isobaric $\to$ isochoric $\to$ isobaric $\to$ isochoric processes, is computed using the exact efficiency formula. It is shown that $η/η_{C}$, with $η_{C}$ the Carnot efficiency (the maximum efficiency available between two fixed temperatures), decreases as we move from the strong coupling regime ($β\to 0$) to the weak coupling domain ($β\to \infty$). We also obtain analytic relations for the efficiency in the weak and strong coupling regimes in both low and high temperature limits. The efficiency for planar and hyperbolic logarithmic $U(1)$ AdS black holes is computed and it is observed that efficiency versus $β$ behaves in the same qualitative manner as the spherical black holes.

Chiral Nonet Mixing in $πK$ Scattering

The underlying mixing of quark components of scalar mesons is probed in $πK$ scattering within a generalized linear sigma model that contains two scalar meson nonets and two pseudoscalar meson nonets (a quark-antiquark and a four-quark). In the leading order of this model, all free parameters have been previously fixed using the mass spectra and several low-energy parameters known from experiment and consistent predictions have been made. As other predictions of the model, in the present work the isospins $I$= 1/2, 3/2 and $J$=0 projection of $πK$ scattering amplitude (as well as phase shifts) are computed and compared with experiment. In the $I$=1/2 channel, it is shown that within the uncertainties of the model parameters a good agreement with experimental data up to an energy of about 1 GeV is obtained, whereas in the $I$=3/2 channel there is a better agreement with experiment which extends to about 1.4 GeV. The effect of final state interactions of $πK$ in the $I$=1/2 channel is approximated by the K-matrix method and the poles of the unitarized scattering amplitude are found. It is shown that the model predicts a light and broad kappa resonance with a mass and decay width of 670-770 MeV and 640-750 MeV consistent with other prior works. Moreover, the scattering lengths in the $I$=1/2, 3/2 are also computed and shown to qualitatively agree with experiment. The overall predictions presented here further support previous findings that the scalar mesons below and above 1 GeV have substantial underlying mixings and that those below 1 GeV have dominant four-quark substructures while those above 1 GeV are closer to conventional $P$-wave quark-antiquark states.

Two-body decay widths of lowest lying and next-to-lowest lying scalar and pseudoscalar mesons in generalized linear sigma model

Two-body decay widths of lowest lying and next-to-lowest lying scalar and pseudoscalar mesons are studied in Generalized Linear Sigma Model (GLSM) of low-energy QCD. This model which considers mixing between "two quark" and "four quark" chiral nonets has been employed to investigate various decays and scatterings in low energy region of QCD. In this paper, $Γ[f_0(980) \rightarrow K \bar{K}]$ and $Γ[a_0(980) \rightarrow K \bar{K}]$ are obtained and it is shown that two-body decay widths of lowest lying mesons are well predicted by this model while for the next-to-lowest lying mesons, only some of the decay widths agree with the experimental results. We have compared the predicted decay widths in GLSM with the results obtained in single nonet linear sigma model (SNLSM) to indicate that chiral nonet mixing greatly improves the predictions of SNLSM for decay widths.

Chiral Nonet Mixing in $η' \rightarrow ηππ$ Decay

Underlying mixing of scalar mesons is studied in $η'\rightarrow ηππ$ decay within a generalized linear sigma model of low-energy QCD which contains two nonets of scalar mesons and two nonets of pseudoscalar mesons (a quark-antiquark nonet and a four quark nonet). The model has been previously employed in various investigations of the underlying mixings among scalar mesons below and above 1 GeV (as well as those of their pseudoscalar chiral partners) and has provided a coherent global picture for the physical properties and quark substructure of these states. It is found that the linear sigma model with only a single lowest-lying nonet is not accurate in predicting the decay width, but inclusion of the mixing of this nonet with the next-to-lowest lying nonet, together with the effect of final state interaction of pions, significantly improves this prediction and agrees with experiment up to about 1\%. It is also shown that while the prediction of the leading order of the generalized model for the Dalitz parameters is not close to the experiment, the model is able to give a reasonable prediction of the energy dependencies of the normalized decay amplitude squared and that this is expected to improve with further refinement of the complicated underlying mixings. Overall this investigation provides further support for the global picture of scalar mesons: those below 1 GeV are predominantly four-quark states and significantly mix with those above 1 GeV which are closer to the conventional p-wave quark-antiquark states.
