Compactified Jacobians of Extended ADE Curves and Lagrangian Fibrations

We observe that general reducible curves in sufficiently positive linear systems on K3 surfaces are of a form that generalises Kodaira's classification of singular elliptic fibres and thus call them extended ADE curves. On such a curve $C$, we describe a compactified Jacobian and show that its components reflect the intersection graph of $C$. This extends known results when $C$ is reduced, but new difficulties arise when $C$ is non-reduced. As an application, we get an explicit description of general singular fibres of certain Lagrangian fibrations of Beauville-Mukai type.

Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K_X^2 = 1$ and $p_g>0$

In this paper we consider Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K^2_X=1$ and positive geometric genus. Extending classical results, we show that such surfaces admit a simple description as weighted complete intersection. We exhibit a wealth of surfaces of all possible Kodaira dimensions that occur as normalisations of Gorenstein stable surfaces with $K_X^2=1$; for $p_g=2$ this leads to a rough stratification of the moduli space. Explicit non-Gorenstein examples show that we need further techniques to understand all possible degenerations.

A new irreducible component of the moduli space of stable Godeaux surfaces

We construct from a general del Pezzo surface of degree 1 a Gorenstein stable surfaces $X$ with $K_X^2=1$ and $p_g(X)=q(X)=0$. These surfaces are not smoothable but give an open subset of an irreducible component of the moduli space of stable Godeaux surfaces. In a particular example we also compute the canonical ring explicitly and discuss the behaviour of pluricanonical maps.

Pluricanonical maps of stable log surfaces

Stable surfaces and their log analogues are the type of varieties naturally occuring as boundary points in moduli spaces. We extend classical results of Kodaira and Bombieri to this more general setting: if $(X,Δ)$ is a stable log surface with reduced boundary (possibly empty) and $I$ is its global index, then $4I(K_X+Δ)$ is base-point-free and $8I(K_X+Δ)$ is very ample. These bounds can be improved under further assumptions on the singularities or invariants, for example, $5(K_X+Δ)$ is very ample if $(X,Δ)$ has semi-canonical singularities.

Lagrangian fibrations on hyperkähler fourfolds

Let X be a projective hyperkähler manifold containing a Lagrangian subtorus L. We study intersections of deformations of L, defining a canonical almost holomorphic map called L-reduction, which is not birational if and only if X admits an almost holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with (strong) fibre L. In dimension four we prove that in the above situation there is always a holomorphic Lagrangian fibration with fibre L, thus answering a question of Beauville in this particular case.

Torsion and cotorsion in the sheaf of Kähler differentials on some mild singularities

We give a criterion for the sheaf of Kähler differentials on a cone over a smooth projective variety to be torsion-free. Applying this to Veronese embeddings of projective space and using known results on differentials on quotient singularities we show that even for mild, e.g. Gorenstein terminal, singularities the sheaf of Kähler differentials will in general have torsion and cotorsion.

Torsion in equivariant cohomology and Cohen-Macaulay G-actions

We show that the well-known fact that the equivariant cohomology of a torus action is a torsion-free module if and only if the map induced by the inclusion of the fixed point set is injective generalises to actions of arbitrary compact connected Lie groups if one replaces the fixed point set by the set of points with maximal isotropy rank. This is true essentially because the action on this set is always equivariantly formal. In case this set is empty we show that the induced action on the set of points with highest occuring isotropy rank is Cohen-Macaulay. It turns out that just as equivariant formality of an action is equivalent to equivariant formality of the action of a maximal torus, the same holds true for equivariant injectivity and the Cohen-Macaulay property. In addition, we find a topological criterion for equivariant injectivity in terms of orbit spaces.
