Variational construction of positive entropy invariant measures of Lagrangian systems and Arnold diffusion

We develop a variational method for constructing positive entropy invariant measures of Lagrangian systems without assuming transversal intersections of stable and unstable manifolds, and without restrictions to the size of non-integrable perturbations. We apply it to a family of two and a half degrees of freedom a-priori unstable Lagrangians, and show that if we assume that there is no topological obstruction to diffusion (precisely formulated in terms of topological non-degeneracy of minima of the Peierl's barrier function), then there exists a vast family of "horsheshoes", such as "shadowing" ergodic positive entropy measures having precisely any closed set of invariant tori in its support. Furthermore, we give bounds on the topological entropy and the "drift acceleration" in any part of a region of instability in terms of a certain extremal value of the Fréchet derivative of the action functional, generalizing the angle of splitting of separatrices. The method of construction is new, and relies on study of formally gradient dynamics of the action (coupled parabolic semilinear partial differential equations on unbounded domains). We apply recently developed techniques of precise control of the local evolution of energy (in this case the Lagrangian action), energy dissipation and flux. In Part II of the paper we will apply the theory to obtain sharp bounds for topological entropy and drift acceleration for the same class of equations in the case of small perturbations.

Stability of synchronization in dissipatively driven Frenkel-Kontorova models

We rigorously show that dissipatively driven Frenkel-Kontorova models with either uniform or time-periodic driving asymptotically synchronize for a wide range of initial conditions. The main tool is a new Lyapunov function, as well as a 2D representation of the attractor. We then characterize dynamical phase transitions and outline new algorithms for determining them.

Uniform boundedness and long-time asymptotics for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in an infinite cylinder

We study the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the two-dimensional strip $\mathbb{R} \times [0,L]$, with periodic boundary conditions and no exterior forcing. If the initial velocity is bounded, we prove that the solution remains uniformly bounded for all times, and that the vorticity distribution converges to zero as $t \to \infty$. We deduce that, after a transient period, a laminar regime emerges in which the solution rapidly converges to a shear flow governed by the one-dimensional heat equation. Our approach is constructive and gives explicit estimates on the size of the solution and the lifetime of the turbulent period in terms of the initial Reynolds number.

Energy bounds for the two-dimensional Navier-Stokes equations in an infinite cylinder

We consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equations in the cylinder $\R \times \T$, with no exterior forcing, and we investigate the long-time behavior of solutions arising from merely bounded initial data. Although we do not know if such solutions stay uniformly bounded for all times, we prove that they converge in an appropriate sense to the family of spatially homogeneous equilibria as $t \to \infty$. Convergence is uniform on compact subdomains, and holds for all times except on a sparse subset of the positive real axis. We also improve the known upper bound on the $L^\infty$ norm of the solutions, although our results in this direction are not optimal. Our approach is based on a detailed study of the local energy dissipation in the system, in the spirit of a recent work devoted to a class of dissipative partial differential equations with a formal gradient structure (arXiv:1212.1573).

Positive exponential sums and odd polynomials

Given an odd integer polynomial f(x) of a degree k >=3, we construct a non-negative valued, normed trigonometric polynomial with the spectrum in the set of integer values of f(x) not greater than n, and a small free coefficient a_{0}=O((\log n)^{-1/k}). This gives an alternative proof for the maximal possible cardinality of a set A, so that A-A does not contain an element of f(x). We also discuss other interpretations and an ergodic characterization of that bound.

The energy flow of dissipative systems on infinite lattices

We study the energy flow of dissipative dynamics on infinite lattices, allowing the total energy to be infinite and considering formally gradient dynamics. We show that in spatial dimensions 1,2, the flow is for almost all times arbitrarily close to the set of equilibria, and in dimensions 3 or more, the size of the set with non-equilibrium dynamics for a positive density of times is two dimensions less than the space dimension. The theory applies to first and second order dynamics of elastic chains in a periodic or polynomial potential, chains with interactions beyond the nearest neighbour, deterministic dynamics of spin glasses, discrete complex Ginzburg-Landau equation, and others. We in particular apply the theory to show existence of coarsening dynamics for a class of generalized Frenkel-Kontorova models in bistable potential.

Distribution of Energy and Convergence to Equilibria in Extended Dissipative Systems

We are interested in understanding the dynamics of dissipative partial differential equations on unbounded spatial domains. We consider systems for which the energy density $e \ge 0$ satisfies an evolution law of the form $\partial_t e = div_x f - d$, where $-f$ is the energy flux and $d \ge 0$ the energy dissipation rate. We also suppose that $|f|^2 \le b(e)d$ for some nonnegative function $b$. Under these assumptions we establish simple and universal bounds on the time-integrated energy flux, which in turn allow us to estimate the amount of energy that is dissipated in a given domain over a long interval of time. In low space dimensions $N \le 2$, we deduce that any relatively compact trajectory converges on average to the set of equilibria, in a sense that we quantify precisely. As an application, we consider the incompressible Navier-Stokes equation in the infinite cylinder $\R \times \T$, and for solutions that are merely bounded we prove that the vorticity converges uniformly to zero on large subdomains, if we disregard a small subset of the time interval.

Characterization of hyperbolicity and generalized shadowing lemma

J. Mather characterized uniform hyperbolicity of a discrete dynamical system as equivalent to invertibility of an operator on the set of all sequences bounded in norm in the tangent bundle of an orbit. We develop a similar characterization of nonuniform hyperbolicity and show that it is equivalent to invertibility of the same operator on a larger, Fréchet space. We apply it to obtain a condition for a diffeomorphism on the boundary of the set of Anosov diffeomorphisms to be nonuniformly hyperbolic. Finally we generalise the Shadowing lemma in the same context.

On complex positive definite functions on Z_n vanishing on squares

We generalize the Sarkozy-Furstenberg theorem on squares in difference sets of integers, and show that, given any positive definite function f:Z_N->C with density at least r(N), where r(N)=O((\log N)^{-c}), there is a perfect square s<=N/2 such that f(s) is non-zero. We do not rely on the usual analysis of the dichotomy of randomness and periodicity of a set and iterative application of the Hardy-Littlewood method. Instead, we find a bound for the van der Corput property of the set of squares.

On van der Corput property of shifted primes

We prove that the upper bound for the van der Corput property of the set of shifted primes is O((log n)^{-1+o(1)}), giving an answer to a problem considered by Ruzsa and Montgomery for the set of shifted primes p-1. We construct normed non-negative valued cosine polynomials with the spectrum in the set p-1, p<=n, and a small free coefficient a_0=O((log n)^{-1+o(1)}). This implies the same bound for the Poincaré property of the set p-1, and also bounds for several properties related to uniform distribution of related sets.
