At the heart of baryonic matter the ARBUZ model favored by recent hadron form factor data

Data on electromagnetic form factors of proton, neutron, and $Λ$ from annihilation and scattering reactions are collected and interpreted in the frame of a generalized picture of the internal structure of baryons which holds in space-like and time-like regions. It is shown that these data give an insight of the space structure of the baryon for distances one hundred times smaller than the baryon size and, in the time-like region, a vision of the time evolution of the hadronic matter for times up to $10^{-25}$~s, that is two orders of magnitude shorter than the time taken by the light to cross the volume of a proton. In the proposed interpretation, the electric form factor of the proton in the space-like region can not cross zero, but vanishes or stays very small, as an extrapolation of the data seems to show. In the time-like region specific structures appearing in the data give evidence of the dominance of the quark-diquark structure in a specific range of time of the evolution of the system.

The first exploration of the physical Riemann surfaces of the ratio $G_E^Λ/G_M^Λ$

Recently, the BESIII experiment renewed the interest on baryon form factors by measuring the modulus and phase of the ratio $G_E^Λ/G_M^Λ$ between the electric and the magnetic $Λ$ form factors with unprecedented accuracy. The BESIII measurement together with older, less precise data, can be analyzed by means of a dispersive procedure based on analyticity and a set of first-principle constraints. Such a dispersive procedure shows the unique ability to determine for the first time the complex structure of the ratio knowing its modulus and phase measured by the BESIII collaboration at only one energy point. Different classes of solutions are obtained, and in all cases, the time-like and space-like behaviors show interesting properties: space-like zeros or unexpected large determinations for the phase. More data at different energies would be crucial to enhance the predictive power of the dispersive procedure and to unravel further remarkable features of the $Λ$ baryon.

Amplitudes separation and strong-electromagnetic relative phase in the $ψ(2S)$ decays into baryons

The strong, electromagnetic and mixed strong-electromagnetic amplitudes of the $ψ(2S)$ decays into baryon-anti-baryon pairs have been obtained by exploiting all available data sets in the framework of an effective Lagrangian model. We observed that at the $ψ(2S)$ mass the QCD regime is not completely perturbative, as can be inferred by the relative strength of the strong and the mixed strong-electromagnetic amplitudes. Recently a similar conclusion has been reached also for the $J/ψ$ decays. The relative phase between the strong and the electromagnetic amplitudes is $φ= (58\pm 8)^\circ$, to be compared with $φ= (73\pm 8)^\circ$ obtained for the $J/ψ$. On the other hand, in the case of the $ψ(2S)$ meson, different values of the ratio between strong and mixed strong-electromagnetic amplitudes are phenomenologically required, while for the $J/ψ$ meson only one ratio was enough to describe the data. Finally, we also observed a peculiar behavior of the mixed strong-electromagnetic amplitudes of the decays $ψ(2S)\toΣ^+ \overline Σ^-$ and $ψ(2S)\toΣ^- \overline Σ^+$.

The cross section of $e^+e^- \to Λ\overline Σ^0+{\rm c.c.}$ as a litmus test of isospin violation in the decays of vector charmonia into $Λ\overline Σ^0+{\rm c.c.}$

Under the aegis of isospin conservation, the amplitudes in Born approximation, i.e., considering the only one-photon-exchange mechanism, of the decay $ψ\to Λ\overline Σ^0+{\rm c.c.}$, where $ψ$ is a vector charmonium, and of the reaction $e^+e^- \to Λ\overline Σ^0+{\rm c.c.}$ at the $ψ$ mass, are parametrized by the same electromagnetic coupling. It follows that, the modulus of such a coupling can be extracted the data on the two observables: the decay branching fraction and the annihilation cross section. By considering the first two vector charmonia, $J/ψ$ and $ψ(2S)$, it is found that, especially in the case of $ψ(2S)$, there is a substantial discrepancy between the values of the modulus of the same electromagnetic coupling extracted from the branching ratio and the cross section. We propose, as a possible explanation for such a disagreement, the presence in the decay amplitude of an isospin-violating contribution driven by a mechanism based on physical (on-shell) intermediate states, that, due to their own nature, should be more effective in the $ψ(2S)$ decay than in that of the $J/ψ$.

Analytic pion form factor

The pion electromagnetic form factor and two-pion production in electron-positron collisions are simultaneously fitted by a vector dominance model evolving to perturbative QCD at large momentum transfer. This model was previously successful in simultaneously fitting the nucleon electromagnetic form factors (spacelike region) and the electromagnetic production of nucleon-antinucleon pairs (timelike region). For this pion case dispersion relations are used to produce the analytic connection of the spacelike and timelike regions. The fit to all the data is good, especially for the newer sets of time-like data. The description of high-$q^2$ data, in the time-like region, requires one more meson with $ρ$ quantum numbers than listed in the 2014 Particle Data Group review.

Form factor ratio from unpolarized elastic electron proton scattering

A reanalysis of unpolarized electron-proton elastic scattering data is done in terms of the electric to magnetic form factor squared ratio. This observable is in principle more robust against experimental correlations and global normalizations. The present analysis shows indeed that it is a useful quantity that contains reliable and coherent information. The comparison with the ratio extracted from the measurement of the longitudinal to transverse polarization of the recoil proton in polarized electron-proton scattering shows that the results are compatible within the experimental errors. Limits are set on the kinematics where the physical information on the form factors can be safely extracted. The results presented in this work bring a decisive piece of information to the controversy on the deviation of the proton form factors from the dipole dependence.

Elastic pp scattering from the optical point to past the dip: an empirical parametrization from ISR to LHC

We describe the main features of recent LHC data on elastic pp scattering through a simple parametrization to the amplitude, inspired by a model proposed by Barger and Phillips in 1973, comprising of two exponentials with a relative phase. Despite its simplicity, this parameterization reproduces two essential aspects of the elastic differential cross section, the well known precipitous descent in the forward direction and a sharp `dip' structure. To include a complete description of data sets near -t=0, we correct the original parametrization. We examine two possibilities, the presence of the two-pion threshold singularity or a multiplicative factor reflecting the proton form factor. We find good descriptions of LHC7 and ISR data in either case. The form factor model allows simple predictions for higher energies through asymptotic theorems and asymptotic sum rules in impact parameter space. We present predictions for this model at higher LHC energies, which can be used to test whether asymptotia is reached. The black disk limit in this model is seen to be reached only for energies near 10^6 TeV.

Checks of asymptotia in pp elastic scattering at LHC

We parametrize TOTEM data for the elastic differential pp cross section at sqrt(s)=7 TeV in terms of two exponentials with a relative phase. We employ two previously derived sum rules for pp elastic scattering amplitude in impact parameter space to check whether asymptotia has been reached at the LHC. A detailed study of the TOTEM data for the elastic differential cross section at sqrt(s)=7 TeV is made and it is shown that, within errors, the asymptotic sum rules are satisfied at LHC. We propose to use this parametrization to study forthcoming higher energy data.

Time-like and space-like electromagnetic form factors of nucleons, a unified description

The extended Lomon-Gari-Krümpelmann model of nucleon electromagnetic form factors, which embodies ρ, ρ', ω, ω' and ϕvector meson contributions and the perturbative QCD high momentum transfer behavior has been extended to the time-like region. Breit-Wigner formulae with momentum-dependent widths have been considered for broad resonances in order to have a parametrization for the electromagnetic form factors that fulfills, in the time-like region, constraints from causality, analyticity, and unitarity. This analytic extension of the Lomon-Gari-Krümpelmann model has been used to perform a unified fit to all the nucleon electromagnetic form factor data, in the space-like and time-like region (where form factor values are extracted from e+e- <-> nucleon-antinucleon cross sections data). The knowledge of the complete analytic structure of form factors enables predictions at extended momentum transfer, and also of time-like observables such as the ratio between electric and magnetic form factors and their relative phase.

No Sommerfeld resummation factor in e+e- -> ppbar ?

The Sommerfeld rescattering formula is compared to the e+e- -> ppbar BaBar data at threshold and above. While there is the expected Coulomb enhancement at threshold, two unexpected outcomes have been found: |G^p (4M_p^2)|= 1, like for a pointlike fermion, and moreover data show that the resummation factor in the Sommerfeld formula is not needed. Other e+e- -> baryon-antibaryon cross sections show a similar behavior near threshold.
