Entanglement in the Quantum Game of Life

We investigate the quantum dynamics of a spin chain that implements a quantum analog of Conway's game of life. We solve the time-dependent Schrödinger equation starting with initial separable states and analyse the evolution of quantum correlations across the lattice. We report examples of evolutions leading to all-entangled chains and/or to time oscillating entangling structures and characterize them by means of entanglement and network measures. The quantum patterns result to be quite different from the classical ones, even in the dynamics of local observables. A peculiar instance is a structure behaving as the quantum analog of a blinker, but that has no classical counterpart.

Homogeneous Floquet time crystal protected by gauge invariance

We show that homogeneous lattice gauge theories can realize nonequilibrium quantum phases with long-range spatiotemporal order protected by gauge invariance instead of disorder. We study a kicked $\mathbb{Z}_2$-Higgs gauge theory and find that it breaks the discrete temporal symmetry by a period doubling. In a limit solvable by Jordan-Wigner analysis we extensively study the time-crystal properties for large systems and further find that the spatiotemporal order is robust under the addition of a solvability-breaking perturbation preserving the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry. The protecting mechanism for the nonequilibrium order relies on the Hilbert space structure of lattice gauge theories, so that our results can be directly extended to other models with discrete gauge symmetries.

Real-time-dynamics quantum simulation of (1+1)-D lattice QED with Rydberg atoms

We show how to implement a Rydberg-atom quantum simulator to study the non-equilibrium dynamics of an Abelian (1+1)-D lattice gauge theory. The implementation locally codifies the degrees of freedom of a $\mathbf{Z}_3$ gauge field, once the matter field is integrated out by means of the Gauss' local symmetries. The quantum simulator scheme is based on current available technology and scalable to considerable lattice sizes. It allows, within experimentally reachable regimes, to explore different string dynamics and to infer information about the Schwinger $U(1)$ model.

Slow heating in a quantum coupled kicked rotors system

We consider a finite-size periodically driven quantum system of coupled kicked rotors which exhibits two distinct regimes in parameter space: a dynamically-localized one with kinetic-energy saturation in time and a chaotic one with unbounded energy absorption (dynamical delocalization). We provide numerical evidence that the kinetic energy grows subdiffusively in time in a parameter region close to the boundary of the chaotic dynamically-delocalized regime. We map the different regimes of the model via a spectral analysis of the Floquet operator and investigate the properties of the Floquet states in the subdiffusive regime. We observe an anomalous scaling of the average inverse participation ratio (IPR) analogous to the one observed at the critical point of the Anderson transition in a disordered system. We interpret the behavior of the IPR and the behavior of the asymptotic-time energy as a mark of the breaking of the eigenstate thermalization in the subdiffusive regime. Then we study the distribution of the kinetic-energy-operator off-diagonal matrix elements. We find that in presence of energy subdiffusion they are not Gaussian and we propose an anomalous random matrix model to describe them.

Discrete Abelian Gauge Theories for Quantum Simulations of QED

We study a lattice gauge theory in Wilson's Hamiltonian formalism. In view of the realization of a quantum simulator for QED in one dimension, we introduce an Abelian model with a discrete gauge symmetry $\mathbb{Z}_n$, approximating the $U(1)$ theory for large $n$. We analyze the role of the finiteness of the gauge fields and the properties of physical states, that satisfy a generalized Gauss's law. We finally discuss a possible implementation strategy, that involves an effective dynamics in physical space.
