Nonrelativistic CFTs at Large Charge: Casimir Energy and Logarithmic Enhancements

The unitary Fermi gas, by virtue of its description as a nonrelativistic conformal field theory, has proven an interesting system by which the quantum properties of CFT can be held to experimental verification. Here, we examine the structure of conformal dimensions of charge-Q operators in nonrelativistic CFT, in the large-Q regime, from the non-linear sigma model perspective. We discuss in detail the renormalization of edge divergences using dimensional regularization, elucidating the presence of $\log(Q)$ terms in the large-charge expansion. Finally we use dimensional regularization to compute the universal one-loop $Q^0 \log(Q)$ contribution to the ground-state energy in $d = 3$ spatial dimensions, with the result $\left.Δ(Q)\right|_{Q^0} = \frac{1}{3\sqrt{3}} \log(Q) + \text{const.}$

Quantum Information Theory of the Gravitational Anomaly

We show that the standard notion of entanglement is not defined for gravitationally anomalous two-dimensional theories because they do not admit a local tensor factorization of the Hilbert space into local Hilbert spaces. Qualitatively, the modular flow cannot act consistently and unitarily in a finite region, if there are different numbers of states with a given energy traveling in the two opposite directions. We make this precise by decomposing it into two observations: First, a two-dimensional CFT admits a consistent quantization on a space with boundary only if it is not anomalous. Second, a local tensor factorization always leads to a definition of consistent, unitary, energy-preserving boundary condition. As a corollary we establish a generalization of the Nielsen-Ninomiya theorem to all two-dimensional unitary local QFTs: No continuum quantum field theory in two dimensions can admit a lattice regulator unless its gravitational anomaly vanishes. We also show that the conclusion can be generalized to six dimensions by dimensional reduction on a four-manifold of nonvanishing signature. We advocate that these points be used to reinterpret the gravitational anomaly quantum-information-theoretically, as a fundamental obstruction to the localization of quantum information.

Universal correlation functions in rank 1 SCFTs

Carrying to higher precision the large-$\mathcal{J}$ expansion of Hellerman and Maeda, we calculate to all orders in $1/\mathcal{J}$ the power-law corrections to the two-point functions $\mathcal{Y}_n \equiv |x - y|^{2nΔ_{\mathcal{O}}} \langle {\mathcal{O}}_n(x) \bar{\mathcal{O}}_n(y) \rangle$ for generators $\mathcal{O}$ of Coulomb branch chiral rings in four-dimensional $\mathcal{N} =2$ superconformal field theories. We show these correlators have the universal large-$n$ expansion \[ \log(\mathcal{Y}_n) \simeq \mathcal{J} \mathbf{A} + \mathbf{B} + \log(Γ( \mathcal{J} + α+ 1)) , \] where $\mathcal{J} \equiv 2 n Δ_{\mathcal{O}}$ is the total $R$-charge of $\mathcal{O}_n$, the $\mathbf{A}$ and $\mathbf{B}$ are theory-dependent coefficients, $α$ is the coefficient of the Wess-Zumino term for the Weyl $a$-anomaly, and the $\simeq$ denotes equality up to terms exponentially small in $\mathcal{J}$. Our methods combine the structure of the Coulomb-branch effective field theory (EFT) with the supersymmetric recursion relations. However, our results constrain the power-law corrections to all orders, even for non-Lagrangian theories to which the recursion relations do not apply. For the case of $\mathcal{N} = 2$ SQCD, we also comment on the nature of the exponentially small corrections, which can be calculated to high precision in the double-scaling limit recently discussed by Bourget et al. We show the exponentially small correction is consistent with the interpretation of the EFT breaking down due to the propagation of massive BPS particles over distances of order of the infrared scale $|x - y|$.

Charge Quantization and the Standard Model from the $\mathbb{CP}^2$ and $\mathbb{CP}^3$ Nonlinear $σ$-Models

We investigate charge quantization in the Standard Model (SM) through a $\mathbb{CP}^2$ nonlinear sigma model (NLSM), $SU(3)_G/(SU(2)_H \times U(1)_H)$, and a $\mathbb{CP}^3$ model, $SU(4)_G/(SU(3)_H \times U(1)_H)$. We also generalize to any $\mathbb{CP}^k$ model. Charge quantization follows from the consistency and dynamics of the NLSM, without a monopole or Grand Unified Theory, as shown in our earlier work on the $\mathbb{CP}^1$ model (arXiv:1309.0692). We find that representations of the matter fields under the unbroken non-abelian subgroup dictate their charge quantization under the $U(1)_H$ factor. In the $\mathbb{CP}^2$ model the unbroken group is identified with the weak and hypercharge groups of the SM, and the Nambu-Goldstone boson (NGB) has the quantum numbers of a SM Higgs. There is the intriguing possibility of a connection with the vanishing of the Higgs self-coupling at the Planck scale. Interestingly, with some minor assumptions (no vector-like matter and minimal representations) and starting with a single quark doublet, anomaly cancellation requires the matter structure of a generation in the SM. Similar analysis holds in the $\mathbb{CP}^3$ model, with the unbroken group identified with QCD and hypercharge, and the NGB having the up quark as a partner in a supersymmetric model. This can motivate solving the strong CP problem with a vanishing up quark mass.

BPS States in the Duality Web of the Omega deformation

In this note, we study different limits of an Omega-deformed (2,0) six-dimensional gauge theory realized in a M-theory fluxtrap background. Via a chain of dualities, we connect the Omega-deformed SYM to a new four-dimensional gauge theory which we refer to as the reciprocal gauge theory. This theory has several properties in common with Liouville field theory, such as its gauge coupling b^2 =ε_2 / ε_1, and its behavior under S-duality. Finally, we realize the BPS states on the SYM side of the AGT correspondence and follow them along the chain of dualities. In the fluxtrap frame, we are dealing with two distinct types of states localized in different radial positions, while in the reciprocal frame, we find single states carrying both charges localized in one place which appear to be perturbatively stable. Our microscopic picture of the small-b limit exhibits semiclassically BPS bound states, which are not visible at the level of the partition function.

Charge Quantization in the $\mathbb{CP}(1)$ Nonlinear Sigma-Model

We investigate the consistency conditions for matter fields coupled to the four-dimensional (${\cal N} = 1$ supersymmetric) $\mathbb{CP}(1)$ nonlinear sigma model (the coset space $SU(2)_G/U(1)_H$). We find that consistency requires that the $U(1)_H$ charge of the matter be quantized, in units of half of the $U(1)_H$ charge of the Nambu-Goldstone (NG) boson, if the matter has a nonsingular kinetic term and the dynamics respect the full group $SU(2)_G$. We can then take the linearly realized group $U(1)_H$ to comprise the weak hypercharge group $U(1)_Y$ of the Standard Model. Thus we have charge quantization without a Grand Unified Theory (GUT), completely avoiding problems like proton decay, doublet-triplet splitting, and magnetic monopoles. We briefly investigate the phenomenological implications of this model-building framework. The NG boson is fractionally charged and completely stable. It can be naturally light, avoiding constraints while being a component of dark matter or having applications in nuclear physics. We also comment on the extension to other NLSMs on coset spaces, which will be explored more fully in a followup paper.

String Theory of the Regge Intercept

Using the Polchinski-Strominger effective string theory in covariant gauge, we compute the mass of a rotating string in D dimensions with large angular momenta J, in one or two planes, in fixed ratio, up to and including first subleading order in the large J expansion. This constitutes a first-principles calculation of the value for the order $J^0$ contribution to the mass-squared of a meson on the leading Regge trajectory in planar QCD with bosonic quarks. For open strings with Neumann boundary conditions, and for closed strings in $D\geq 5$, the order $J^0$ term in the mass-squared is exactly calculated by the semiclassical approximation. This term in the expansion is universal and independent of the details of the theory, assuming only D-dimensional Poincare invariance and the absence of other infinite-range excitations on the string worldvolume, beyond the Nambu-Goldstone bosons.

Topology of Future Infinity in dS/CFT

The dS/CFT proposal of Anninos, Hartman, and Strominger relates quantum Vasiliev gravity in dS_4 to a large N vector theory in three dimensions. We use this proposal to compute the Wheeler-de Witt wave function of a universe having a particular topology at future infinity. This amplitude is found to grow rapidly with the topological complexity of the spatial slice; this is due to the plethora of states of the Chern-Simons theory that is needed to impose the singlet constraint. Various mechanisms are considered which might ameliorate this growth, but none seems completely satisfactory. We also study the topology dependence in Einstein gravity by computing the action of complex instantons; the wave function then depends on a choice of contour through the space of metrics. The most natural contour prescription leads to a growth with genus similar to the one found in Vasiliev theory, albeit with a different power of Newton's constant.

Smoothed Transitions in Higher Spin AdS Gravity

We consider CFTs conjectured to be dual to higher spin theories of gravity in AdS_3 and AdS_4. Two dimensional CFTs with W_N symmetry are considered in the lambda=0 (k --> infinity) limit, where they are conjectured to be described by continuous orbifolds. The torus partition function is computed, using reasonable assumptions, and equals that of a free field theory. We find no phase transition at temperatures of order one; the usual Hawking-Page phase transition is removed by the highly degenerate light states associated with conical defect states in the bulk. Three dimensional Chern-Simons-matter CFTs with vector-like matter are considered on T^3, where the dynamics is described by an effective theory for the eigenvalues of the holonomies. Likewise, we find no evidence for a Hawking-Page phase transition at large level k.

String theory of the Omega deformation

In this article, we construct a supersymmetric real mass deformation for the adjoint chiral multiplets in the gauge theory describing the dynamics of a stack of D2-branes in type II string theory. We do so by placing the D2-branes into the T-dual of a supersymmetric NS fluxbrane background. We furthermore note that this background is the string theoretic realization of an Omega-deformation of flat space in the directions transverse to the branes where the deformation parameters satisfy ε_1 = - ε_2. This Ω-deformation therefore serves to give supersymmetric real masses to the chiral multiplets of the 3D gauge theory. To illustrate the physical effect of the real mass term, we derive BPS-saturated classical solutions for the branes rotating in this background. Finally, we reproduce all the same structure in the presence of NS fivebranes and comment on the relationship to the gauge theory/spin-chain correspondence of Nekrasov and Shatashvili.

The Omega Deformation From String and M-Theory

We present a string theory construction of Omega-deformed four-dimensional gauge theories with generic values of ε_1 and ε_2. Our solution gives an explicit description of the geometry in the core of Nekrasov and Witten's realization of the instanton partition function, far from the asymptotic region of their background. This construction lifts naturally to M-theory and corresponds to an M5-brane wrapped on a Riemann surface with a selfdual flux. Via a 9-11 flip, we finally reinterpret the Omega deformation in terms of non-commutative geometry. Our solution generates all modified couplings of the Ω-deformed gauge theory, and also yields a geometric origin for the quantum spectral curve of the associated quantum integrable system.

The One-Loop Effective Kähler Potential. I: Chiral Multiplets

We derive a universal formula for the one-loop renormalization of the effective Kähler potential that applies to general supersymmetric effective field theories of chiral multiplets, with arbitrary interactions respecting N=1 supersymmetry in four dimensions. The resulting expression depends only on the tree-level mass spectrum and the form of the regulator. This formula simplifies and generalizes existing results in the literature. We include two examples to illustrate its use.

Dark Matter and The Anthropic Principle

We evaluate the problem of galaxy formation in the landscape approach to phenomenology of the axion sector. With other parameters of standard LambdaCDM cosmology held fixed, the density of cold dark matter is bounded below relative to the density of baryonic matter by the requirement that structure should form before the era of cosmological constant domination of the universe. Galaxies comparable to the Milky Way can only form if the ratio also satisfies an upper bound. The resulting constraint on the density of dark matter is too loose to select a low axion decay constant or small initial displacement angle on anthropic grounds.

Linear sigma model toolshed for D-brane physics

Building on earlier work, we construct linear sigma models for strings on curved spaces in the presence of branes. Our models include an extremely general class of brane-worldvolume gauge field configurations. We explain in an accessible manner the mathematical ideas which suggest appropriate worldsheet interactions for generating a given open string background. This construction provides an explanation for the appearance of the derived category in D-brane physics complementary to that of recent work of Douglas.

Quantum Hall Physics = Noncommutative Field Theory

In this note, we study a matrix-regularized version of non-commutative U(1) Chern-Simons theory proposed recently by Polychronakos. We determine a complete minimal basis of exact wavefunctions for the theory at arbitrary level k and rank N and show that these are in one-to-one correspondence with Laughlin-type wavefunctions describing excitations of a quantum Hall droplet composed of N electrons at filling fraction 1/k. The finite matrix Chern-Simons theory is shown to be precisely equivalent to the theory of composite fermions in the lowest Landau level, believed to provide an accurate description of the filling fraction 1/k fractional quantum Hall state. In the large N limit, this implies that level k noncommutative U(1) Chern-Simons theory is equivalent to the Laughlin theory of the filling fraction 1/k quantum Hall fluid, as conjectured recently by Susskind.
