N_f=2 chiral dynamics in the mixed chiral regime

We present a study of the pseudoscalar propagator in the mixed chiral regime with valence quark masses in the ε-regime and sea quark masses in the p-regime. We first show the NNLO prediction of this observable in the chiral expansion. In sectors of fixed topology, the correlator has a pole in 1/m_v^2 that can be matched to the topological zero-mode contributions to the correlator. We compute the residue of this pole in a N_f=2 mixed-action simulation and compare the results with the prediction in Chiral Perturbation Theory.

Light quark correlators in a mixed-action setup

We report our progress in simulating Neuberger valence fermions on N_f=2 Wilson O(a)-improved sea quarks. We compute correlators with valence quark masses both in the p- and in the epsilon-regime, and we match the results with the predictions of the Chiral Effective Theory in the mixed regime. This allows us to extract the Low Energy Couplings (LECs) of the N_f=2 theory and to test the validity of the approach.

Probing the chiral regime of Nf=2 QCD with mixed actions

We report on our first experiences with a mixed action setup with overlap valence quarks and non-perturbatively O(a) improved Wilson sea quarks. For the latter we employ CLS Nf=2 configurations with light sea quark masses at small lattice spacings. Exact chiral symmetry allows to consider very light valence quarks and explore the matching to (partially quenched) Chiral Perturbation Theory (ChPT) in a mixed epsilon/p-regime. We compute the topological susceptibility and the low-lying spectrum of the massless Neuberger-Dirac operator for three values of the sea quark mass, and compare the sea quark mass dependence to NLO ChPT in the mixed regime. This provides two different determinations of the chiral condensate, as well as information about some NLO low-energy couplings. Our results allow to test the consistency of the mixed-regime approach to ChPT, as well as of the mixed action framework.

Review of lattice results concerning low energy particle physics

We review lattice results relevant for pion and kaon physics with the aim of making them easily accessible to the particle physics community. Specifically, we review the determination of the light-quark masses, the form factor f_+(0), relevant for the semileptonic K -> pi transition at zero momentum transfer as well as the ratio f_K/f_pi of decay constants and discuss the consequences for the elements V_{us} and V_{ud} of the CKM matrix. Furthermore, we describe the results obtained on the lattice for some of the low-energy constants of SU(2)_LxSU(2)_R and SU(3)_LxSU(3)_R Chiral Perturbation Theory and review the determination of the B_K parameter of neutral kaon mixing. We introduce quality criteria and use these when forming averages. Although subjective and imperfect, these criteria may help the reader to judge different aspects of current lattice computations. Our main results are summarized in section 1.2, but we stress the importance of the detailed discussion that underlies these results and constitutes the bulk of the present review.

Exploring the chiral regime of $N_f=2$ QCD with mixed actions

We report on our simulations with Neuberger valence fermions on CLS $N_f=2$ configurations with non-perturbatively $O(a)$-improved Wilson sea quarks. We consider the matching of QCD to ChPT in the so called mixed-regime in which the sea quarks are in the $p$-regime while the valence quarks are in the $ε$-regime. From this matching, we can get information on $Σ$, $L_6$ and the combination $L_8+2L_6+2L_7$.

Finite-size scaling of heavy-light mesons

We study the finite-size scaling of heavy-light mesons in the static limit. The most relevant effects are due to the pseudo-Goldstone boson cloud. In the HMChPT framework we compute two-point functions of left current densitities as well as pseudoscalar densitites for the cases in which some or all of them lay in the epsilon-regime. As expected, finite volume dependence turns out to be significant in this regime and can be predicted in the effective theory in terms of the infinite-volume low-energy couplings. These results might be relevant for extraction of heavy-light meson properties from lattice simulations.

Heavy-light mesons in the epsilon-regime

We study the finite-size scaling of heavy-light mesons in the static limit. We compute two-point functions of chiral current densities as well as pseudoscalar densities in the epsilon-regime of heavy meson Chiral Perturbation Theory (HMChPT). As expected, finite volume dependence turns out to be significant in this regime and can be predicted in the effective theory in terms of the infinite-volume low-energy couplings. These results might be relevant for extraction of heavy-meson properties from lattice simulations.

Wilson fermions in the epsilon regime

We extend the epsilon-expansion of continuum chiral perturbation theory to nonzero lattice spacing in the framework of Wilson Chiral Perturbation Theory. We distinguish various regimes by defining the relative power counting of the quark mass m and the lattice spacing a. We observe that for m ~ a Lambda^2_QCD, the explicit breaking of chiral symmetry in Wilson fermions is still driven by the quark mass and lattice corrections are highly suppressed. The lattice spacing effects become more pronounced for smaller quark masses and may lead to non-trivial corrections of the continuum results at next-to-leading order. We compute these corrections for standard current and density correlation functions. A fit to lattice data shows that these corrections are small, as expected.

Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD:a finite-size scaling study on the lattice

Spontaneous chiral symmetry breaking in QCD with massless quarks at infinite volume can be seen in a finite box by studying, for instance, the dependence of the chiral condensate from the volume and the quark mass. We perform a feasibility study of this program by computing the quark condensate on the lattice in the quenched approximation of QCD at small quark masses. We carry out simulations in various topological sectors of the theory at several volumes, quark masses and lattice spacings by employing fermions with an exact chiral symmetry, and we focus on observables which are infrared stable and free from mass-dependent ultraviolet divergences. The numerical calculation is carried out with an exact variance-reduction technique, which is designed to be particularly efficient when spontaneous symmetry breaking is at work in generating a few very small low-lying eigenvalues of the Dirac operator. The finite-size scaling behaviour of the condensate in the topological sectors considered agrees, within our statistical accuracy, with the expectations of the chiral effective theory. Close to the chiral limit we observe a detailed agreement with the first Leutwyler-Smilga sum rule. By comparing the mass, the volume and the topology dependence of our results with the predictions of the chiral effective theory, we extract the corresponding low-energy constant.

Critical exponents for higher-representation sources in 3D SU(3) gauge theory from CFT

We establish an exact mapping between the multiplication table of the irreducible representations of SU(3) and the fusion algebra of the two-dimensional conformal field theory in the same universality class of 3D SU(3) gauge theory at the deconfining point. In this way the Svetitsky-Yaffe conjecture on the critical behaviour of Polyakov lines in the fundamental representation naturally extends to whatever representation one considers. As a consequence, the critical exponents of the correlators of these Polyakov lines are determined. Monte Carlo simulations with sources in the symmetric two-index representation, combined with finite-size scaling analysis, compare very favourably with these predictions.

The static quark potential and scaling behavior of SU(3) l attice Yang-Mills theory

The potential between a static quark and antiquark in pure SU(3) Yang-Mills theory is evaluated non-perturbatively through computations on the lattice in the region from short to intermediate distances (0.05 fm < r < 0.8 fm). In the high energy regime the results are compared with the parameter-free prediction of perturbation theory obtained by solving the Renormalization Group equation at two and three loops. The choice of the renormalization scheme to define a running coupling turns out to be important for the accuracy of the perturbative prediction: by obtaining the running coupling through the force, perturbation theory is applicable up to alpha ~ 0.3, while from the static potential only up to alpha ~ 0.15. In the region where perturbation is supposed to be reliable, no large unexpected non-perturbative term is observed. In the second part of this work, universality and scaling behavior of different formulations of Yang-Mills theory on the lattice are discussed, in particular the Iwasaki and DBW2 actions. The deconfinement temperature T_c*r0 and the glueball masses (m_0++)*r0, (m_2++)*r0 are analyzed. Particular attention is dedicated to the violation of physical positivity which occur in these actions and the consequences in the extraction of physical quantities from Euclidean correlation functions.

The Nf=0 heavy quark potential from short to intermediate distances

We study the potential of a static quark anti-quark pair in the range 0.05fm \leq r \leq 0.8fm, employing a sequence of lattices up to 64^4. Lattice artifacts in potential and force are investigated theoretically as well as numerically and continuum quantities are obtained by extrapolation of the results at finite lattice spacing. Consistency of the numerical results with the form of scaling violations predicted by an analysis `a la Symanzik is found. The scale r_0/a is determined for the Wilson action up to beta=6.92.
