Chemical composition control at the substrate interface as the key for FeSe thin film growth

The strong fascination exerted by the binary compound of FeSe demands reliable engineering protocols and more effective approaches towards inducing superconductivity in FeSe thin films. Our study addresses the peculiarities in pulsed laser deposition which determine FeSe thin film growth and focuses on the film/substrate interface, the tendency for domain matching epitaxial growth but also the disadvantage of chemical heterogeneity. We propose that homogenization of the substrate surface improves the control of stoichiometry, texture, and nanostrain in a way that favors superconductivity even in ultrathin FeSe films. The controlled interface in FeSe/Fe/MgO demonstrates the proof-of-principle.

Interface control by homoepitaxial growth in pulsed laser deposited iron chalcogenide thin ilms

Thin film growth of iron chalcogenides by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) is still a delicate issue in terms of simultaneous control of stoichiometry, texture, substrate/film interface properties, and superconducting properties. The high volatility of the constituents sharply limits optimal deposition temperatures to a narrow window and mainly challenges reproducibility for vacuum based methods. In this work we demonstrate the beneficial introduction of a semiconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ seed layer for subsequent homoepitaxial growth of superconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ thin film on MgO substrates. MgO is one of the most favorable substrates used in superconducting thin film applications, but the controlled growth of iron chalcogenide thin films on MgO has not yet been optimized and is the least understood. The large mismatch between the lattice constants of MgO and FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ of about 11% results in thin films with a mixed texture, that prevents further accurate investigations of a correlation between structural and electrical properties of FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$. Here we present an effective way to significantly improve epitaxial growth of superconducting FeSe$_{1\text{--}x}$Te$_x$ thin films with reproducible high critical temperatures ($\geq$ 17 K) at reduced deposition temperatures (200 °C - 320 °C) on MgO using PLD. This offers a broad scope of various applications.

BaFe2As2/Fe bilayers with [001]-tilt grain boundary on MgO and SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates

Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) can be realized on both MgO and SrTiO3 bicrystal substrates with [001]-tilt grain boundary by employing Fe buffer layers. However, an additional spinel (i.e. MgAl2O4) buffer between Fe and SrTiO3 is necessary since an epitaxial, smooth surface of Fe layer can not be grown on bare SrTiO3. Both types of bicrystal films show good crystalline quality.

Bicrystalline Grain Boundary and Hybrid SNS Junctions Based on Ba-122 Thin Films

To investigate the properties of iron-based superconductors, we examined different kinds of Josephson junctions using Co-doped Ba-122 thin films. Based on bicrystalline SrTiO3 substrates we prepared grain boundary (GB) junctions, which showed clear Josephson effects. We present electrical measurements at varying temperatures and magnetic fields. Furthermore, we prepared hybrid junctions using thin film technique. Confined by a Ba-122 base electrode (S) and a PbIn counter electrode (S') two different geometries of hybrid junctions are formed: a planar SNS' junction with a gold barrier (N) in between and an edge-type junction with an interface-engineered barrier. All three kinds of junctions showed asymmetric resistively shunted junction-like (RSJ) behavior with ICRN products of 20.2 /mu V (GB junctions), 18.4 /mu V (planar SNS' junctions) and 12.3 /mu V (edge-type junctions), respectively. An excess current could be observed at all junctions.

Lessons from Oxypnictide Thin Films

First experiments on the growth of oxypnictide F-doped LaFeAsO thin films indicated an incomplete normal-to-superconducting transition and offered a work programme challenging to overcome possible difficulties in their fabrication. In this regard the possibility of an all in-situ epitaxial growth appeared to be a matter of time and growth parameters. The following review clarifies that F-doped oxypnictide thin films are extremely difficult to grow by in-situ PLD due to the formation of very stable impurity phases such as oxyfluorides (LaOF) and oxides (La2O3) and the loss of stoichiometry possibly due to incongruent evaporation of the target or re-evaporation of volatile elements at the substrate surface. However, the review also demonstrates that the employed two-step fabrication process for oxypnictide thin films has been successfully applied in the preparation of clean polycrystalline as well as of epitaxial thin films. Fundamental investigations on the upper critical field, its temperature dependence and its anisotropy contributed to an understanding of multiband superconductivity in oxypnictides.

The influence of the buffer layer architecture on transport properties for BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 films on technical substrates

A low and almost temperature independent resistance in the normal state and an anomalous peak effect within the normal-superconducting transition have been observed in BaFe$_{1.8}$Co$_{0.2}$As$_2$/Fe bilayers, prepared on IBAD-MgO/Y$_2$O$_3$ buffered technical substrates. A resistor network array sufficiently reproduces this effect, assuming an increase of the electrical conductance between tape and film with decreasing buffer layer thickness. Based on this model we evaluated the influence of this effect on the critical current density and successfully reconstructed the superconducting transition of the bilayer.

Thickness dependence of structural and transport properties of Co-doped BaFe2As2 on Fe buffered MgO substrates

We have investigated the influence of the superconducting layer thickness, d, on the structural and transport properties of Co-doped BaFe2As2 films deposited on Fe-buffered MgO substrates by pulsed laser deposition. The superconducting transition temperature and the texture quality of Co-doped BaFe2As2 films improve with increasing d due to a gradual relief of the tensile strain. For d>90 nm an additional 110 textured component of Co-doped BaFe2As2 was observed, which leads to an upward shift in the angular dependent critical current density at H // c. These results indicate that the grain boundaries created by the 110 textured component may contribute to the c-axis pinning.

Coherent interfacial bonding on the FeAs tetrahedron in Fe/Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 bilayers

We demonstrate the growth of epitaxial Fe/Ba(Fe(1-x)Co(x))2As2 (Fe/Ba-122) bilayers on MgO(001) and LSAT(001) single crystal substrates using Pulsed Laser Deposition (PLD). By exploiting the metallic nature of the FeAs tetrahedron in the Ba-122 crystal structure, we achieve a coherent interfacial bond between bcc iron and Co-doped Ba-122. Tc values for both bilayers were close to that of the PLD target. Direct observation of interfacial bonding between Fe and the Ba-122 FeAs sublattice by atomic resolution transmission electron microscopy implies that this bilayer architecture may work for other iron pnictide systems and pave the way for the fabrication of superconducting/ferromagnetic heterostructures.

Epitaxial Growth of Superconducting Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 Thin Films on Technical IBAD-MgO Substrates

The biaxially textured growth of superconducting Co-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) thin films has been realized on ion beam assisted deposition (IBAD) MgO coated conductor templates by employing an iron buffer architecture. The iron pnictide coated conductor showed a superconducting transition temperature of 21.5 K, which is slightly lower than that of Co-doped Ba-122 films on single crystalline MgO substrates. A self-field critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm2 has already been achieved even at 8 K. The current experiment highlights the potential of possible coated conductor applications of the iron-based superconductors.

Jc Scaling and Anisotropies in Co-doped Ba-122 thin films

We have successfully grown epitaxial, superconducting films of Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 (Ba-122)with x ~ 0.1. The films grow without observable correlated defects parallel to the c-axis, as confirmed by TEM. This is also reflected in the absence of a caxis peak in Jc(θ). In contrast to cuprate high-Tc superconductors such as YBa2Cu3O7-d or even Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10-d, the pnictides show a rather low anisotropic behavior in their Jc(θ) behavior as well as in their upper critical fields, Hc2. As a multiband superconductor, Ba-122 exhibits a temperature dependent electronic mass anisotropy.

Reversible shift in the superconducting transition for La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 and BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 using piezoelectric substrates

The use of piezoelectric substrates enables a dynamic observation of strain dependent properties of functional materials. Based on studies with La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 we extended this approach to the iron arsenic superconductors represented by BaFe2-xCoxAs2 to investigate strain driven changes in detail. We demonstrate that epitaxial thin films can be prepared on (001)Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)0.72Ti0.28O3 substrates using pulsed laser deposition. The structural as well as the electric properties of the grown films were characterized in detail. A reversible shift of the superconducting transition of 0.44 K for La1.85Sr0.15CuO4 and 0.2 K for BaFe1.8Co0.2As2 was observed applying a biaxial strain of 0.022% and 0.017% respectively.
