On physical insignificance of null naked singularities

In this work we study collapse of a general matter in a most general spacetime i.e., a spacetime with any matter and without (assuming) any symmetry. We show that the energy is completely trapped inside the null singularity and therefore they cannot be experimentally observed. This most general result implies, there is no physical significance of the null naked singularities irrespective of their existence. This conclusion strongly supports the essence of cosmic censorship hypothesis.

Can we see naked singularities?

We study singularities which can form in a spherically symmetric gravitational collapse of a general matter field obeying weak energy condition. We show that no energy can reach an outside observer from a null naked singularity. That means they will not be a serious threat to the Cosmic Censorship Conjecture (CCC). For the timelike naked singularities, where only the central shell gets singular, the redshift is always finite and they can in principle, carry energy to a faraway observer. Hence for proving or disproving CCC the study of timelike naked singularities will be more important. Our results are very general and are independent of initial data and the form of the matter.

New approach to calculating the News

We consider the problem of finding the gravitational radiation output, or news, within the context of a numerical simulation of a spacetime by means of the null-cone, or characteristic, approach to numerical relativity. We develop a method for computing the news that uses an explicit coordinate transformation to a coordinate system that satisfies the Bondi conditions. The method has been implemented computationally. We present results of applying the method to certain test problems, demonstrating second order convergence of the news to the analytic value.
